Rangers 3, Devils 6

The Rangers played a competitive game against the NJ Devils for two periods but were unable to turn it into a win, instead giving up three third period goals and losing 6-3 before a national TV audience.

Scoring opened, as usual, with the Rangers giving up a goal in the first two minutes – this time to Bratt (14) at 01:06 of the first period. Borgen (5), trailing Trocheck (28), would tie it five minutes later at 06:26, taking a nice dish at the top of the circle and putting a hard wrist shot past Markstrom. Just two minutes later, Gavrikov (12) would rifle in a shot top shelf from just above the circle to put the Rangers up, 2-1. Laba (11) and Kartye (6) with assists. Scoring ended, as it often seems to do, with the NYR giving up a last minute of the period goal, this time to Mercer (15) at 19:47 on the PP. 2-2 after two.

The second period was relatively quiet by comparison. At 15:52, Hughes (13, J, not the scary looking one) put a slap shot from the very high slot through traffic to beat Quick just as a NJD power play was ending. However, the Rangers would respond quickly, Cuylle (16) getting a tip on a hard Schneider (11) shot to tie the game 3-3 at 16:53. Raddysh (8) would also be credited with an assist. 3-3 after two.

The third period was the Ranger downfall – a few bad passes and failure to get the puck out of their own end when it was seemingly something easy to do. Hischier (21) started the scoring with a PPG at 08:05, a wrister from the slot making it past Schneider and Quick. Hughes (J, 14) would get his second of the night at 16:56 putting the game away before his insult to injury 15th of the season at 19:28, ENG. 6-3 NJD the final.

Game summary below:

The Rangers have a busy week coming up – games on 9,10,12 and 14 March beginning with the Flyers in Filthadelphia at 19:00. Telecast by MSG and NBCSP+

Thanks for taking the time to continue the Ranger obituary. ABC loves the Jack Hughes show. They can’t help themselves.

Jack Hughes will have April and May to continue to celebrate his golden goal and another season without being in the playoffs.

Horrible special teams game. They weren’t that bad 5 on 5. They don’t have anyone who drives play and they got 3 goals form the D although Cuylle was credited with the tip. Gavrikov is now 10th among NHL D in goal scoring.

Flint wins the prospect battle 4-2. Aspinall with an assist and Greentree with a goal.

It is getting harder to understand something that was already puzzling – why (I know, I know) does Sheary get around twice as many minutes as the three Euros on the fourth line? 49, 71 and 84 each has size, can skate, plays hard and is still relatively young. Do the players see this as nepotism at its most blatant or is there some level of respect for Sheary? I know it’s becoming tiresome seeing so many comments pointing out problems with this team but this really irked me yesterday. “Nice first goal, Jaroslav. Your reward is watching Sheary get knocked off the puck and falling down over and over. This way you can learn how to play the game right from the veteran. Plus my niece is making her famous pot roast Sunday and I don’t want any uncomfortable conversations over dinner.”

This organization is just irrational from top to bottom. All players who have paid their dues deserve some respect. However there comes a time in one’s career where your usefulness becomes useless, a.k.a. Conor Sheary.

Only watched a few segments in game; on one Laffy rifled a cross ice pass to an open Purro into his skates and then the PP where every time he touched the puck the D attacked him knowing he is most likely to cough it up
    Guys a bum
When asked post break what his goals where, re replied ‘to feel good about my game’; as nebulous an answer as one could provide nd nothing to do with team goals or admitting he six raw eggs so far

I’m not sure if I’m more disappointed that they didn’t trade Trocheck for a first, second and top prospect or that they didn’t trade Laffy for a bag of pucks. Laffy is as useless and lazy as they come. I guess counting all his money from his ridiculous contract makes him too tired to make an effort on the ice.

JJ Emery is picking up points here and there now. I don’t look for much offense from him but he was pretty much a zero last year.(1 assist in game 1.) Maybe he can be a player. He should stay another year at NDU.

Despite picking up a few points they are still about #3 in draft order and it’s unlikely they pass anyone in the East. I wish they ha moved out a couple of more vets at the deadline just so a couple more guys from Hartford could get a look. They now how 2 waiver claims getting regular minutes. That shows how weak the organization talent pool is.

They could also just scratch those vets to get some looks at the Hartford guys but that would disrupt the cosmic order

tight race for picks 2 through 5. The 5OA gets you Caleb Malhotra who seems to have shot up the draft ranking somewhat?

Edstrom, Parsinan, Chemlar, who are 3 guys that won’t be on the roster next year. C’mon, do we really care about those 3?

The real issue with Busto is he is just not that good especially for the 1OA pick. However I do agree with the laziness aspect.

All three of Edstrom, Parssinen and Chmelar are signed for next year and I would definitely rather see them than Sheary.

Carey I would expect at least one or two of those three to still be on the roster as bottom six/4th liners if for no other reason than cheap, under contract and somewhat familiar with what Sully wants them to do. Not suggesting that one can’t do better but focus should be fixing the top 6/9.

In the mean time, anyone not named Sheary should be getting ice time. I don’t know the plans for Raddysh but at a prorated 22-23 pts and 60 hits, I’m not sure we need to see him on the 3rd line next year either. Fourth line? OK but we know what he is at this point, cycle him with another call up.

Well in that case, I look forward to a full season of those 3. Add in Rempe, and we really have the makings of a team 🙄.

    Beezle,
None of them should be on the team next year, and I don’t think any of them will, including Rempe. I’m going to be polite and not trash them, none of them are NHL players.

would be nice if we had a reporter who would ask the coach why Sheary is playing instead of one of the kids from Hartford. Grow a pair and get a damn answer instead of cach speak. God I miss Frank Brown and Larry Brooks and The Carp.

If the top six/nine are not carrying play on this team, it really doesn’t matter if Edstrom/Chemlar or even Rempe are on your 4th line getting 8 mins a game.

They are a problem, if without significant improvement, when the team does get back into the playoffs in a real way. Plenty of time to pick up better/newer role players closer to that time than doing it this summer (and probably again in three years when they might be a contender).

But the focus on this group of players (and we can toss Sheary and Raddysh into it as well) just makes me even less confident in Drury as he clearly thought they were a good idea or the best available to him out of a very wide pool of available players/prospects in that $1-2M pay range. If he can’t get that right, what of the more critical positions?

    1
  25. Beezle Avatar

Jeff – none of the beat reporters want to annoy/anger the coach or GM so they tend to give softies. The way around it is to designate one after each game to read a list of anonymized questions from the pool, that way they are all hated equally 🤣

This is the way I see it; if we did trade Trochect we would still be looking for a similar center at the same price or less. We have far more flexibility with this arrangement where Trocheck could be traded for a big haul. If not work a reasonable extension for Trocheck and trade other players. We still have other players we could trade for a decent exchange. Our #16 is a leader & most of the young players look up to him. Like to un ‘captain Miller and trade him; was a real bad move by Drury. We have a few prospects that may surprise us. Bottom line here we made the best trade we never made. Worry about Sullivan; don’t like his decisions on not developing all his youngsters. Been coaching one team far too long.

What a game last night between Sabres and Lightning. Holy cow. Over 100 PIMs and lots of lead changes.

Carrick fitting right in. Good for him. He will be much happier there to end out his career.

Wish Stanley played but he was in press box (made booth appearance for a while) because of some weird Visa issues.

    So glad the Ning lost

Eventually, yes the did. Our organization had to mortgage the future to get it right 1 time in 86 years. I never said the Sabres will when the cup in case somebody brings that up. And rebuilding is never a guarantee blah, blah, blah. But as a fan I am sick and tired of all this retool or re-whatever just to come close. Now look at the mess this management clown show has created. I want a dynasty before I check out! I want to see them kick the snot out of the pens, philth, devils, and fishsticks on their way to raising the Claice! My rant is over for now.

    Just for the record:

Trocheck is under contract for three more seasons at 5.625 per. The NTC shows 10, 6 and 6 teams he can refuse, respectively (and respectfully lol).

He will be 33 on 11 July, for all intents co-inciding with start of NHL season.

If he plays all remaining games he prorates out to 53 pts on the season or 70 for a full 82 game campaign.

In a normal circumstance you probably would not move him but the Rangers seem to believe they have no up and coming assets that make keeping him worthwhile.

    Above based purely on production.

There was, and still is, no reason to keep Trocheck. Put aside his snake like behavior in the room. On the ice, he’s not worth it. He has to go over the summer.

dont get the Trocheck hate now.. open to moving him based on the right return that includes a projected 2c but he still has a good contract at a position where they don’t have much depth….and while Laba has been solid he’s a still probably a 3C. Appears that the cap rule extending into playoffs suppressed trade activity overall…there will be more teams interested in Trocheck at draft …with higher cap

I thought Oreo was playing well

    Disappointed he’s sitting.

We know what vk9 is and isn’t. Depth 7th or 8th D. No reason for him to be taking Oreo or Morrow’s minutes (morrow in Hartford I know)

If everyone knows that Drury had interest in Stramel in 2023 draft before Wild chose him several picks before Perrault and via trade rumors this season why wouldn’t Stramel go FA in August and sign with a Ranger team with less less center depth and more cap space?

Minnesota’s season is likely to end Wednesday night vs. Penn State. Drury should be there with a contract for Brody Lamb. He could get some games in for Hartford.

    ORF,
You and I have watched, and had discussions about Lamb. I agree they should sign him. I’ll go one further, instead of an ATO, they should burn a year, and sign him to his ELC. Get him with the big club for a bit. Maybe a couple of games, and practices.

Elliotte says that the Rangers’ ask for Trocheck was a 1st round pick, a roster player and a legit prospect and that Carolina (and presumably everyone else) thought that was too rich. That’s way more than an unsigned Stramel, a ’27 first and a depreciated prospect like Jiricek (I imagine that the ‘discount’ Guerin was seeking was something along those lines). More like Yurov, Stramel and a pick or Kotkaniemi, Nadeau and a pick. Admirable ambition and maybe something approaching that becomes available if the Wild or the Canes are bounced early.
