The Rangers closed out their 25/26 on a winning note against a playoff bound Tampa team who sat quite a few of their regulars, including netminder Vasilevskiy. Whether this win pushes the Rangers into the #4 post for the draft will be determined by the outcome of the Calgary/LAK game at 21:00 EDT tonight (SN1, FDSNSC). A Calgary win will lock the Rangers into the #3 spot.
As to the game, a feel good night for waiver pickup Kartye (7) who had two goals, his first multigoal game of his career. His was the only goal of the first period, coming at just 04:02 into the game and assisted by nice pass by Zibanejad (44) and Gavrikov (21).
Kartye (8) opened the second in the same fashion but even faster – putting a snap shot past the hopeless Halverson at 01:29. This time Miller (35) sending the puck in deep and wide from the red line for Kartye to pick it up at the low circle. Sheary (11) was also credited with an assist. Perreault (12) tossing a long shot from the blue line at a screened Halverson put the Rangers up 3-0 at 04:49. Cuylle (18) and the hot hand Kartye (14) with the assists.
Tampa was not conceding the game, depleted or not, and Bjorkstrand (12) got them on the board at 11:15 on a rebound that Garrand just was unable to corral (and no NYR at all in the vicinity). However, Zibanejad (34) dashed Tampa’s comeback hopes with another PPG, this time at 12:46 while crossing netfront; Lafreniere (33) and Miller (36) with the two assists. 4-1 NYR after two.
The only goal of the third period came just after the puck dropped, at 00:51 when Perry (17) beat Garrand. Final NYR 4 TBL 2 and on to the golf course they go!
Game summary below:

The next NYR regular season game will be in October, date TBA. Until then, enjoy the playoffs and look for a Go Time playoff post or two for your thoughts.

we’re likely 6th pick after falling 2 spots in lottery
so who do we get
mkh
sam called it already. and this one will last a lifetime
Alex if they end up at #4 (they can’t be worse) after the lotto the most likely position is 5th at 44%
I doubt the Flames win tonight, but stranger things have happened. I think Bettman will find a way to get us the 2nd pick. Of course that will put so much pressure on Drury he will most likely crash and burn!
Debbie Downer
Bettman will find a way to get Florida the #1 and Toronto #2 😱
Mollie I guess figures Miller will forget this dig by October:
“In terms of production and on-ice play, Miller left a lot to be desired. Injuries factored into that, but instances of giving up on the play and poor body language at times are much more memorable.”
Lottery may decide direction on Trocheck..maybe they keep him if they get 1/2 and can add to top 6 with a FA (Tuck or Marchand?) Still think you trade Trocheck if the return is right to get a young center
Oh just as an FYI
There is a new post scheduled for 3PM today to reflect upon player performance this season
I’m more inclined to move Trocheck as his is a spot they look to be able to fill. I’m not inclined to move Schneider as I think that leaves a hole in their defense both in the primary sense and in the ‘if Fox is hurt again’ sense.
I honestly wouldn’t do anything on the defensive side beyond moving on from Vaaka9n and keeping Rio. Not sold on Morrow but leave him in Hartford another season and see how it goes.
Just received an email from the New York Rangers, thanking me for a memorable centennial season…🙄
Upstate they think you’re 100? 😁
Season mercifully over. This should be a summer of plenty of change. Start with Trocheck. I expect one veteran addition to the top 6, and many additions to the mess of the bottom 6.
Beezle: This team, especially the first few months, certainly tacked a few years on me!
BTW, many thanks for your grinding through your pre- and post-game reports all season! 🙂
I think the bottom 6 is looking much better based on last 2 months …Kartye/Chmelar are keepers.
yes…thx Beezle…great job !
The Beez Knees – that was a tremendous effort. Reminds of the Carlin line, ‘one man’s sheet is another man’s stuff’ a yeoman’s effort if there ever was one. God speed, not back to the slopes…
Kirby Dach is coming off of two injury plagued seasons. He will need to be qualified at around 3.5. That would be a very difficult call for Montreal. He could be the Rangers version of Dylan Strome.
BobbyO,
I like Kartye, but as a 4th liner. Chmelar I do not believe in. Just a garbage time aberration.
Dach was always intriguing; also liked the other BHawks center traded at this deadline to Earlers; Jason Dickinson; had a break out year 2 seasons ago and since, middling output. Prototypical 3C
I think Kartye slots 3rd line. Chmelar can be solid 4th liner.. he can move and is physical
If the team had been in a position to fight for a playoff spot, even if ultimately failing, it would be a lot easier to judge some of those who jumped in late to the bottom six. No pressure means no gripping sticks too tight, more understanding of mistakes, etc.
I’d give the guy who has a last name nobody on tv/radio seems able to pronounce the same way every time a shot in camp but he’ll really need to play his butt off to stick around next season.
Sykora showed up shot out of a cannon. Just as quickly, faded away. Edstrom can’t stay healthy, and when he is, coach had no use for him.
Depending on how you view Cuylle, they either need 3 guys for the bottom 6, or 4 guys for the bottom 6.
I think we contend next year
Adjust to sully and no Olympic distractions
Couple key changes with cap space and away we go
We are not as far off as we looked pre Olympics
Glad Garand looks like a legit goalie to backup Shesty so that question is hopefully answered and still cheap
Kartye Trocheck Cuylle is my third line
4th line may need to be an addition/upgrade for grabs in camp
Possible rempe sighting
Maybe Endstrom Laba Chemlar with mixing in Rempe if he earns it
Perrault Mika Laffy
? Miller ?
Kartye Trocheck Cuylle
Endstrom Laba Chemlar
Gavrikov Fox
Robertson Schneider
? Borgen
Shesty
Garand
Need two top 6 wings and a Left D
That’s a retool scenerio over a rebuild. A rebuild is trading multiple players away and making much more drastic changes.
Corporal Clegg
Disagree
Perrault Mika Laffy
? Miller ?
Cuylle Laba Kartye
? ? Chemlar
Trocheck needs to be moved before he can’t be.
its a retool but dont think Trocheck or Schneider will be part of it
Fortescue or vet slots in to 3LD
That top line is softer than Charming
Fox was a point/game player on this train wreck, lots of pp points but they all count
Guys that can go
Vakanainen, Bergen, Raddysh, Sheary.
I wouldn’t cry if Miller was traded.
Trochek should be traded if they can recoup a 1st round pick and quality prospect.
Borgen….not Bergen…some how this thing wants to do the spelling for me.🤯
Can’t get rid of Raddysh if we expect his brother to sign
Most likely on the team next year,
8,93,42,13,50,94, and probably 24. Going to need another center. Either a 3C, or 4C. Everything else is wide open. Lamb and Greentree can, and will push, but neither is a given.
23,44,4,17, and 29. Would expect a UFA, or two on the left side.
Agree with Mollie about Miller lack of compete and also his reaction when things go bad. Sort of like Fox. I do not think there would be any takers for Miller because of age and size of contract. If you move Trocheck you have to replace a lot of stuff that he does; winning faceoff’s and working the power play. Would not move Schneider, but try to sign him for a reduced price this year.
In spite of what he does moving Trocheck is a must. If Drury waits too long it will be too late for a decent return. Do it now Drury make a decision take the risk.
They don’t generate scoring chances and consistently have a total shot attempts in the mid to upper 40s while the opponent is in the 60s. Even in their recent good streak that has been true. That generally means they have to defend better in their own end and get superior goaltending to win. They won because Halversieve was in goal for Tampa last night. I don’t recall him making a difficult save while Garand made several. The outcome could have been different if Vasy played. Their horrible start was to a great degree a result of them not generating enough offense to score on goalies who are on top of their games. Guys need to be willing to go to the net to get scoring chances and rebounds. GP seems to get it. Valley had his scoring chart and the goal last night was the first one he sored that wasn’t close in. They need a couple of other guys to join him.
It looks like Greentree’s Spitfires will get the best of Aspinall’s Firebirds. Windsor now leads the series 3-0 after a 2-1 win on Tuesday night. Since both the Rangers and Wolfpack seasons have ended there will be no ATOs for Aspinall or Battaglia. See them at prospects camp in July.
there is a new post that moves beyond the game last night
