Rangers 4, Wild 2

Well, well what do we have here? A four game win streak! The first of the NYR 25/26 season and in fact, the first since Oct 14-22 2024 when they also won four in a row. All this winning has moved them from the #2 draft pick to … #4. Then again, if they win their last 16, they’ll have 96 points and an outside shot of the playoffs and crush the Pen’s NHL record 17 game winning streak of 1992/93. 😉

So the Wild were pretty tame, even though the refs did their best to get them back in the game by giving the Rangers 18 minutes in penalties. For awhile it even looked like the Rangers would score six goals again.

Laba (9) started the scoring with a PPG at just 02:41, another shockingly early goal for the Rangers, when Perreault (11) hit Laba in stride for a wrist shot from just inside the right circle. Gavrikov (16) would get the secondary. Speaking of which, Gavrikov (13) would put the NYR up 2-0 at 15:00 when he decided to imitate one of those eight figure forwards by backhanding the puck into the net while facing and moving towards the circle. Kartye (10) and Fox (28) with the assists. 2-0 NYR after one.

Boldy (38!) would score a PPG at just 00:35 of the second period, Kartye having been given a cross-checking penalty as time expired in the first. Boldy put the wrist shot between Borgen’s legs to beat Shesterkin easily. 2-1 NYR until 08:41 when Chmelař (2) would get his second career goal, a pretty backhand net front after a Wild neutral zone turnover – Vaakanainen (6) moving the puck quickly to Raddysh (9) on the wall at the blue line who then centered the puck to Chmelař in stride.

Trocheck (13) would put the Rangers up 4-1 with the last score of the second period at 09:03, a weird deflection of a Gavrikov (17) shot from the top of the circle into a crowd above the net. Fox (29) would get the secondary.

The only goal of the third period was by Yurov (10) at 07:19 to narrow the NYR lead to 4-2. The Wild were unable to get past Shesterkin again, even with four more power play opportunities. Final score NYR 4 MIN 2.

Game summary below:

The Rangers will be back at MSG to take on the LA Kings on Monday, 16 March at 19:00 EDT, telecast by MSG and FDSNW. Stale bread will be served to fans at the game.

    from GGMM:

#NYR head coach Mike Sullivan said they just wanted to see Adam Edström at center, but also credited Jaroslav Chmelař for keeping his spot in lineup.

“We wanted to see it, what it might look like if Eddie had the capability of playing in the middle. Obviously, if you get a guy that’s 6-7 that has the capacity to play the position, especially in a fourth line role, and can certainly be hard to play against with his size, his mobility, his reach. He can lean on people. In practice yesterday, JT, Troch and Mika were helping him on the faceoff circle. I think we’ll continue to explore it with him. He hasn’t played a lot of it most recently. We also liked how Jaro has been playing and we wanted to keep Jaro in the lineup.”

“what it might look like if Eddie had the capability of playing in the middle” wasnt he drafted as a center though and played the position in Hartford too? jfc.

Out attempted 96-39. They played one good period and Shesty stole the game. PK was good but that was mostly Igor too. They have shot 25% the last two games. That’s not sustainable. The effort is much better, but they don’t have the horses yet. They need to regress to the mean to maintain their draft position.

4-1 up, and they got 3 more SOG after that. Definitely went into a shell, but that’s what a lot of NHL teams do, and as good as Shesty was (and your best player is allowed to be your best player) I thought it was more about shot volume than him standing on his head.

The Wild is loaded, and it was good to see this what-might-have-been lineup put up a fight last night. Turns out missing Fox and Shesterkin was not insignificant. Fun team, well coached.

I don’t see it with the Wild. Remind me a bit of Carolina. Immature behavior on the ice, easily distracted. Toss a high volume towards the net. Kaprizov great, but selfish. Overstaying his shifts. Zucc still a side show Bob. Hughes is a tremendous player, but small. He struggled with some of the Rangers size. I don’t get why they did not give up Yurov for Trochek. They needed Trochek.

Guerin Could possibly lose his job because of that non-trade. Especially if they go out in the 1st rd. Just a thought.

I’m really liking this Chmelar kid. I’ve watched the replay of his goal several times and, aside from his surprisingly sweet hands around the net (why hasn’t he scored a ton in the AHL?), his crushing hit on Brock Faber just seconds before, was a textbook ‘finishing your check’ play. Hope he sticks around.

Wild are not deep enough down the middle to compete with Dallas/Avs etc …Guerin should have ponied up assets

Wanted to see Edstrom in the middle under Lavy… a great skater and has size…just needs to stay healthy

They are trying to do some player development with Edstrom. What a concept! The fourth line should have gotten a few more minutes. They may have been sheltering Edstrom from Dzone FOs.

Silver linings… the losses allowed them to move Bread and get some assets when they knew they were not bringing him back…got them Kartye who looks like a solid bottom 6 winger….for free …and got Laffy some more powerplay time and confidence

We often trash Drury for his many bad decisions, and he deserves every bit of criticism. But Guerin’s blunder is a big one. Holding on to Yurov may be great for the long game. However it does nothing to improve their SC chances this year.

The only expected goal model I found was 5.7 to 3.4 favoring the Wild. That can be distorted by a high volume of low risk shots but it shows how dominant the Wild was. They went into shell early and deep. That’s not a recipe for success.

Vet coaches sacrifice youth TOI to better their chances of winning games, wrong move. Roll 4 lines and let the chip fall where they may. They’re not making the playoffs so what’s the point. They don’t call it rope a dope for nothing. Besides it it only worked for one prize fighter. If Miller is fine being with Trocheck and Cuylle he should have no beef on PP 2. If he does remind him it’s a retool. Meaning tools like you are becoming obsolete.

the internet sighed in the Edstrom has not played center as a pro, so I withdraw my jfc for that detail but not in general 😁

ORF the other model had xGF 3.25 to 1.21 either way you slice it not great. I do not see Valiquette’s numbers anyplace.

When they have a lead they go into a total shell. That may because they are not use to being ahead. They need to have something between full forecheck and turtle shell. Lavy’s 1-3-1 may be a middle ground.
