The Rangers road win streak is over. Earlier today, the Rangers fell to the Golden Knights 3-2 – failing to take advantage of a wounded Vegas squad who had been struggling the past few games.
It was, for the most part, a disappointing effort. Only five shots in the first, six in the second and eight in the third. There were a few bright spots. Brodzinski and Cuylle took off on a 2-1, Cuylle smartly taking a shot that would deflect to the left where Brodzinski (2) was able to smack it past Schmid to bring the game to 2-1 after two. Bowman (2) on the PP in the first and Hutton (1) earlier in the second had scored for VGK.
Theodore (2) put VGK up 3-1 early in the third at 07:18. The Rangers were a bit deflated after that but got some life when at 12:42 Brodzinski would get his second from in the paint, until someone noticed that Zibanejad misread the rushing Miller and was in the zone offside. Coach Sullivan had earlier moved Brodzinksi to LW1 with Cuylle moving down to the Laba line. As he said in the postgame, “He was playing well, he was going to the net. The one thing Jonny has the capability of doing is scoring goals.”
The Rangers would in fact pull within one when Trocheck (3) tipped in a Panarin shot at 17:17. Though the NYR pulled the goalie and were on the 6-5 for the majority of the final two minutes, they were unable to get anything past Schmid. 3-2 VGK the final.
Once gain it was the third line that showed up to play while the others were mostly spectators. The fourth line tried, but is not quite the same with Parssinen and Raddysh. The top two lines? Still on the plane? Maybe in the lounge? Nothing against Brodzinski, he plays hard and never complains when he sits. But that he got slotted into wing on the top line says volumes about what the coach was not seeing last night.
Game summary below:
