Rangers 2, VGK 3

Published by

The Rangers road win streak is over. Earlier today, the Rangers fell to the Golden Knights 3-2 – failing to take advantage of a wounded Vegas squad who had been struggling the past few games.

It was, for the most part, a disappointing effort. Only five shots in the first, six in the second and eight in the third. There were a few bright spots. Brodzinski and Cuylle took off on a 2-1, Cuylle smartly taking a shot that would deflect to the left where Brodzinski (2) was able to smack it past Schmid to bring the game to 2-1 after two. Bowman (2) on the PP in the first and Hutton (1) earlier in the second had scored for VGK.

Theodore (2) put VGK up 3-1 early in the third at 07:18. The Rangers were a bit deflated after that but got some life when at 12:42 Brodzinski would get his second from in the paint, until someone noticed that Zibanejad misread the rushing Miller and was in the zone offside. Coach Sullivan had earlier moved Brodzinksi to LW1 with Cuylle moving down to the Laba line. As he said in the postgame, “He was playing well, he was going to the net. The one thing Jonny has the capability of doing is scoring goals.”

The Rangers would in fact pull within one when Trocheck (3) tipped in a Panarin shot at 17:17. Though the NYR pulled the goalie and were on the 6-5 for the majority of the final two minutes, they were unable to get anything past Schmid. 3-2 VGK the final.

Once gain it was the third line that showed up to play while the others were mostly spectators. The fourth line tried, but is not quite the same with Parssinen and Raddysh. The top two lines? Still on the plane? Maybe in the lounge? Nothing against Brodzinski, he plays hard and never complains when he sits. But that he got slotted into wing on the top line says volumes about what the coach was not seeing last night.

Game summary below:

The Rangers next game is against the Colorado Avalanch, Thursday at 21:00 EST. Telecast by MSG, KUSA, KTVD and ALT. Might be over by midnight 😉

During intermission Brodude said that they have been doing 2-1 drills two or three times every praccy. Thats great. But maybe they need more 5-5 drills?

Tough to play against big teams like this but honestly most of top 6 has no interest in going to net/slot

Vegas management has spat upon nd embarrassed NYR ‘management’ since the day B4 they (only recently) entered the league…and not exactly Original Six that everyone seems to salute to. Why is this left unspoken?

They dressed 4 AHL quality player, not including the 2 AHL players that were scratched. It’s hard to win with any consistency when you are putting that kind of lineup on the ice. Add in Zibanejad soft play on the first goal against, and Panarin being panarin. It’s ugly.

Feeling sorry 4 JT. He really tries/cares, but something’s missing. Will that ‘something’ ever return, or do we jettison him along with a couple o other mediocre duds B4 it’s too late?

Drury is going to have to pull a 3 for 1 deal to add to the forward depth. The most logical guy to do that with is Schneider.

Keep seeing that Kyrou from Blues is available —would move Laffy for him or Schneider but they would need to figure out cap on latter

  8. BobbyO Avatar

They have forward depth..their bottom 6 has been carrying them …they need someone in top 6 that can bring some offense

Moving Schneider to “fix” the top six would be a mistake. Rather give up one of the draft picks+

Carey true about the AHL/NHL borderline players yet they seem to be the ones most consistently busting their butts out on the ice?

I guess at this point I have serious misgivings that even adding a player like MacKinnon/Scheifele/Necas/insert_name_here would move the dial in the top six for more than a few games.

Moving on from Panarin sooner than later to me is the best and easiest call.

Agree on bundling talent to bring back some assets for the future; Meeka is very serviceable at $6M per for a Cup Contender who wants his playoff experience and play in all 3 areas; ES, PP, PK. Can bundle with Schneider who was rendered somewhat moot when they traded for and signed Borgen.

So tired of Bread on the PP freelancing with little impact; getting him off the roster would be a big hole to fill but its time to get some return; Kings have always seemed like a good trading partner; they need scoring; always liked Alex Laferriere’s game

    NYR is 29th in goals/game, 26th in PPG/game

Never solved the RW hole in top 6; moving forwards in and out but no true RW. Tuch (UFA) is 29 and would be a solid middle six RW

There is just a lack of speed in top 6 now added to Bread sees the game as East-West. Johnny B Goode sticks out because of his speed and desire to shoot.

Laffy is just a ballerina out there with no desire to hit anyone…sad.

Carey I disagree on Schneider. Are they going to extend Soucy? I’d rather keep Schneider (salary bump on RFA) and have him play offside next to Borgen. Let Morrow move up to third pair. Cost wise it makes sense and retains the team options on moving on from Borg or Fox come 27/28 and beyond.

SN the “hole” left by moving Panarin now could easily be filled by a) his replacement and b) the other players who might now play more N/S. At the least, with the right guy, they should be a more difficult team to play against.

Pack had a rare Tuesday game yesterday. They should do it every week. They won in OT for a change. Berard got his first. Casey Fitz also got his first for the OT winner. Othmann was listed as the 3rd star and had an assist. Not sure what is going on between the pipes. Callum Tong played and Boyko was the backup. Martin must be in witness protection.
Their ECHL affiliate is now Bloomington IL. Zack Karpa is the only name I recognize on their roster. They have guys from Korea, Japan and Russia on the team and most are 25 or older. Not much to see there.

If the Rangers had any interest in playing Schneider on the left, they would have done it this year. They chose to play Vaakininen as the 3LD, and Soucy as the 2LD. It is very clear to me, that the Rangers don’t view Schneider as a top 4 D man. Morrow is waiting on the wings. Moving Schneider makes sense. They also seem to be keeping a spot open on the left side. Either for Dorrington, or more likely, Fortrscue.

Beez – his replacement is either Gaby Baby or Cuylle right now; not even worried about this season to fill his spot; this roster is going back to Black and Blue Torts non scoring roster without the black and blue part…

Shoot first player with speed and size who can play well on all 3 units…there’s a guy on the Ducks who fits the bill…moving on…

like Schneider but overall has been average and he has Fox and Borgen in front of him. And what does his next contract look like? Does 5-6M make sense for a 3rd pair D. If you can move him for an young top 6 forward its a no brainer

The only redeeming thing about Lafreniere’s contract is the NMC is only 8 teams so Drury is not forced to move him this summer for that reason.

But after 400 games it is fair to ask if this is what he is always going to be. One can give some slack to high scorers (we do with Bread now) for their game away from the puck but is Lafreniere ever going to score more than 50 pts consistently, let alone get into the 70-90 pts range?

Since 20/21 draft, fowards only, 150 GP min – Lafreniere #6 in pts/60, the other Laf #13 1.67, Coolio #14 1.63. Cut it to since 24/25 50GP+, the other Laf rises to #3 at 2.02 pts/60, Coolio rises to #8 at 1.92 and our Laf drops to #10 at 1.91.

    Postgame word salad:

captain J.T. Miller: “At some point you look in the mirror. Speaking on behalf of myself, I certainly expect a hell of a lot more production than what I have. I’ve never really gauged my game on points, and I said that a lot. Typically, when I bring my game, the points come. That being said, this year, it seems like nothing’s really going in the net. We’ve got a big enough sample size that 25% of the season is gone, and we’re in a lot of 1-goal games. If I can raise my personal standard and lead the team a little bit better production wise, I think our outcome in these games are going to change. So it’s making me frustrated. It’s hard to control that…Trust me, it’s on my mind, but same time, come a long way, in a sense, of not getting wrapped up in that shit.”

The only way this team makes the playoffs is if the other teams completely tank. Unfortunately, the top 6 is a slow, underperforming group and Drury depleted the prospect pool by trading away numerous picks for mediocre rentals. The bottom six give a much better effort, but just don’t have the skills to score. That’s the definition of a non-playoff team.

Tommy – Agreed – the best thing for the long term would be for this team to be out of the playoff contention by January, so Drury can’t justify trading either of the first round picks. Unfortunately, due to the weak division and parity, they will probably still have a shot at the playoffs at the deadline, which will most likely trigger a bad trade by Drury and further mortgaging of the future.

What boggles my ( sometimes fallible) mind is how many very top picks each year, especially ours, who are defined as the very best in the entire Universe, are the definition of (and too often deliver) little but a semi-talented mediocrity.
