Rangers 1, Flames 5

As a fan blog, we want to try to put the best face forward and stay positive. These are difficult days for the Rangers and more so for fans who have no control over the outcome of games but still spend hours watching or listening in the hopes that their team will emerge victorious.

There are 72 games left for this team to turn things around, regain respectability and at least give a go at getting a playoff spot. But it has to start from within, every player, every line and every coach. Fingers crossed they find a way.

Scoring details below:

The Rangers remain on the road and face the Vancouver Canuks, Tuesday night at 22:00 EDT telecast by MSG and SN360.

    And my personal opinion:

Parcells said it best: you are what your record says you are. And the NYR record says they are not a good team. The defensive efforts of the first few games are long forgotten. What we see now is a repeat of last year and parts of the prior two.

Add in “slow” starts, defensive break downs, predictability and failure to score on power plays, lack of real hustle, general unwillingness to get dirty or go to the difficult areas to make a play.

There is no need to single out any one player or two or three, it is almost the entire team playing this way. And the coach seems unwilling (based on post games) to do much more than paper it all over. He doesn’t get mad, doesn’t demand accountability.

If last season hadn’t been such a struggle one might be more patient but there needs to be change, starting with accountability. Screw up a play? Miss your next shift, or two or three. Maybe even a game. Sully needs to get tough.

After missing the playoffs the prior year, in October 1993 the Rangers dropped two games in a row to the expansion ducks and recently-expanded lightning. They didn’t lose again for 15 games.

Unfortunately this ain’t the 1993 rangers.

After several good defensive efforts with little offensive bite the wheels are off the bus. This team as constructed is a lost cause. They are headed for the lottery…however with draft track record they might find a way to wreck that too.
Its time to blow up this team….lots of guys need new addresses. If only Dreary could be sent out to pasture and a competent GM hired….probably not going to happen. I’m glad for 94….its clearly going to last a lifetime. Makes me sad.

No surprise, been saying this team is not good. The only way to start heading in the right direction is to blow it up. Kinda like what the devils did by trading off players for picks, hopefully draft high, make smart trades because if this organization does not they will be stuck in mediocrity for a long time. For this to work they need to do a better job in drafting. They also have to get lucky in the draft because they had finally gotten a lottery pick and he turns out to be a bust.

If they don’t trade panarin and recoup assets and they resign him, than this organization is stupid.

I am awake boneheads and really nor stressed at all. I entered this season with low expectations so here we are. I have been saying this for a long time now deconstruct then reconstruct from top to bottom. There are really only to forwards worth keeping on the current roster, Cuylle and Laba. Definitely Schneider and Robertson. There no need to wait the time is now and then as much as possible at the trade deadline. The 1st player to move Laffo-Busto. I focused on him last night he is lost and useless. I thought he was going to make it when he hit 57 pts. He obviously benefited from great years from Krusty and Vermont. Drury must go, Mikey was the wrong hire, and Dolan should be ashamed for allow the clown show on ice. To quote the famous Doors song, “This is the End”

Winning, and losing are habits. When they were 12/4/1 last year, they were winning out of habit. I have little doubt that if Drury didn’t go scorched earth on them, they would have pulled their game together and been easily in the playoffs. Then they started losing, and haven’t stopped since. Losing is now a habit for this team. As I have said previously, there is not a good way to lose. Losing is a mindset/habit. It is going to be very tough to change that.

I do agree somewhat that losing is a habit. But the construction of this team is incapable of doing anything else. No speed, little skill, collective low hockey IQ, and zero heart. Perfect storm, losers lose. Until Jimmy D cares about the future, your looking at it.

Dolan will be on the hook for a lot of dollars in the Spring, but he can lower his payroll to make up for it. They need to get to work on getting guys to waive NMCs to maximize the return at the deadline. The top guys have to start scoring to help build their value. The Rangers don’t have anyone in the top 88 scores in the league right now.

Alex I don’t think situation with Mika is quite as dire as you make it to be, he should be moveable if NMC waived with NYR assuming 1-2M of his salary.

There are a ton of players in that 6-7M range. Mika has a high upside potential for any acquirerer, is a center and still relatively young at 32. It would be a change of scenery trade. As the buying GM you probably be happy to get Mika at that price, even if he only matched last season’s 62 pts.

Mike Sullivan, a Massachusetts guy, was an assistant coach on the Rangers a while back, an up-and-comer who everyone knew would be an NHL coach. Which he became, two Cups worth, on the Penguins.

Dan Muse, a Massachusetts guy, was an assistant coach on the Rangers last year, an up-and-comer who everyone knew would be an NHL coach. Which he now is, 6-2-1, on the Penguins.

The interesting thing to me now is how good a selling job Drury has done with Dolan. That will determine if he gets to do the rebuild. Nepo-babies need their butts constantly and not being adequately attentive is what cost Gorton his job.

From GGMM, a new Sullyism on JT:

“I think he’s done a great job for us. He’s a no nonsense guy, as you guys know. In a lot of ways, the way he plays the game, personifies the type of team – from an identity standpoint – that we’re trying to build. He’s a fierce competitor. He’s a talented player, and has the ability to make plays on the offensive side, but he’s hard to play against at the same time. I think he embodies the identity that we’re trying to build here. I just think his presence on the bench and in the locker room has been great. I think he has a maturity to him…I think the best way JT leads is through his example. He’s inspiring when he plays the game the way he does, with just the competitive fire and the attention of detail on both sides of the puck. He’s an offensive player, but he understands and values the importance of playing defense. That’s the best example, for me, of leadership that he can provide for us right now.”

    Lots of Sully Quotes:

    – Matt Rempe is going to be out “longer term,” per #NYR Mike Sullivan.

    – Mothmann: “This is the conversation that him and I have had throughout the course of training camp, before training camp started. I sat with him after the Lehigh Valley, the rookie games, and trying to define for him what the expectation is, and how we could potentially earn a roster spot. And I think the most important element of it is just attention to detail, reliability, knowing your job, doing your job, play away from the puck. That was where his focus, I think, needed to be. We’re looking for that element as an important aspect of him earning a roster spot. In the game the other night, there were some good things that he did. There were also some moments where attention to detail could have helped us keep the puck out of the net and things of that nature. We’ll continue to work with Otter with respect to those details and what those mean.”

    – Robertson: “We feel like we have seven defensemen that are very capable. We thought Robo was playing extremely well, bringing an element of physicality, playing with confidence, playing on his toes. He was defending rush well. He had a good stick. He was making good decisions, when to pinch, when not to pinch, good decisions with the puck. There was a simplicity to his game. There was a physical edge to his game that we felt was deserving of him being in the lineup. As a young player, for me, the biggest thing is trying to bring that consistently. We felt that the last couple of games that his game hasn’t been up to that level. We’ll work with him. Quinnie sits with with those guys almost daily…Vaaks is another guy that that is very capable also. These are competitive guys that all want to be in the lineup every night. We’re trying to make the best decisions for the team to give us the best chance to win. There’s a process that we go through after every game and evaluating and assessing what we have, and we make decisions from there.”

    A few thoughts:

Drury was Gorton’s assistant GM and he had a lot of input on many of the decisions back then, so he doesn’t get a pass.

Othmann and Robertson being benched is typical Rangers, no matter the coach. Only Bottom 6. rookies and third pair Defense is ever held accountable. Top 6 and top 4 defense can do anything they want or do nothing at all(mostly the case) and they keep getting rewarded.

Sully needs an eye appointment. He must have rose colored contact lenses when he looks at Miller’s game. Miller not showing much of anything and not hard to play against.

Heard Drury schedules a meeting with Dolan first thing every Monday Morning. He takes out a few compromising photos of Dolan, then tells him they have nothing further to discuss and then instructs him to close the door to his office on his way out.

Minx! You better not be unwell again or I’ll need to come down there and … well, I don’t know what. Feel better, don’t watch the game and follow your doc’s orders!
