Rangers 5, Sharks 6 (OT)

Published by

on

Well, that wasn’t how we expected that game to turn out now was it? The Rangers dropped another winnable game last night, this time at home against the San Jose Sharks in OT.

As the coach said in his post game presser, it seemed like many of the players were going for offense at the expense of all else, resulting in odd man rushes and poor play in their own end. A lack of focus as well – good teams are not giving up two goals in the final 10 seconds of a period as the Rangers did for Celebrini to close the first and second periods.

On the plus side, the third line had four goals, including a hat trick by Raddysh (3) (two even strength, one short handed) and one by Parssinen (2). Zibanejad (3) had a PPG which at the time put the NYR up 3-2 early in the second period.

Unfortunately, they would also give up the hat trick to Celebrini (5) and a pair, including the OT winner, to Smith (2). The SJS draft picks from the past few years look quite good.

Sully has his work cut out for him.

Injury Notes: Rempe left the game after only 19 seconds after taking tossing them with Reaves. Could be precautionary, there were quite a few landed by both heavy weights.

Scoring details below:

The Rangers will go on the road and face the Calgary Flames, Sunday night at 20:00 EDT telecast by MSG, SNW and TVAS. Could be a HNIC game as well.

I thought the worst thing Sully said after the game is that JT told him the team would be ready. They clearly were not, or at least not to win a game.

The new post dropped as I was writing. Repost:
I am coming to the realization that 94 was it for me. The Sharks have some young players who are fun to watch. The Rangers are like paint drying even when they eke out a win. They are like the 90s Devil teams without the cups. Forever NHL 500.
Thanks for summarizing Sully’s presser. The game was enough for me.

Since the summer of 24, they have removed from the roster the 3 most important leaders on the team. There is clearly a leadership void. Miller has the C, but he hasn’t even been here for a year. 10,93, and 23 wear an A, but that’s for show. 16 muscled his way on last year, but you can’t lead from the press box.

Now that the side show that is Rempe is hurt, we get to have both Brodzinski, and Sheary in the lineup at the same time. Oh happy days.

that was a Laviolette re-run…Crappy start and breakdowns/turnovers at the end of 1st and 2nd period. They should be happy Raddysh played like Bossy and got them a point

Sounds like Sully though they played like the last couple of years. You tend to lose your structure when you immediately go behind by 2. Even with that the top six only managed Mika’s PP goal. 5 of the top minus for the night with Sheary even. LAF another -3. He’s in early connection for the green jacket again.

Is Dolan being punished by God? Is he in the Epstein files? I look at other 1OAs and then look at LAF and say they should have traded the pick. I don’t see any skill that he has that stands out. Shooting, skating stickhandling, defense, compete level. There is no wow factor to his game. He is an ordinary NHL player who could have been available in the second round.

In addition to the leadership void they don’t have top end talent. They moved out some skill and added a little grit. What remains is an aging core that is in decline.

I read that Rempe has a broken jaw. Maybe he won’t challenge top tough guys for a while.

  9. Carey Wilson Avatar

And they are also so afraid of screwing up another prospect, that they are frozen in deciding when to call them up. I’m not the biggest Berard guy, but he most certainly should be here. There is a spot for Perreault in the top 6, and what could it hurt to have Othmann here.

There has never been a point to having Rempe in the lineup. He loses more than he wins, so not an intimidating fighter. Always a step late to make a hit. Takes himself out of position trying to hit someone, and falls down constantly. He’s not an NHL player. No matter how hard they try to make him one, or how hard fans wish he was.

    Agree with 1015

Disagree with 1021 – he’s been quite effective this year and not for fighting. Our 4th line has been one of the best lines on the team and probably the best 4th line in NHL. They go downhill and shift momentum. If he wasn’t an NHL player he wouldn’t have been getting 13 min a game

Rangers really need to tighten their zone up and manage the game in the last minute !

    OT was ugly!

  15. Carey Wilson Avatar

Sullivan is trying to make him an NHL player. That’s why he’s getting the minutes. He accomplishes very little when he’s out there. If they get the puck deep, he can occasionally cycle, but eventually he gets out muscled by a smaller player, and loses the puck. Difference of opinion, but I don’t think he’s an NHL player.

You have brought up the Rangers record with Rempe before, and it’s not accurate. They were 500 last year with him in the lineup, and we see the record this year so far. He has minimal ( I’m being polite) effect when he plays.

  20. BobbyO Avatar

this was AI reference…..The New York Rangers have a record of 38-22-7 all-time with Matt Rempe in the lineup. Recent data from the 2024-25 season showed a record of 21-16-5 with him in the lineup.

The fourth (or at times 3B) line has at times been the only line consistently driving the net so far this season and getting time in zone. Wish I had a source for that kind of stat so just gut observation.

But focusing on Rempe or Edstrom is basically throwing our hands up at the top six, perhaps top nine. I’ve not seen either Parsnip or Raddish be especially effective shift after shift but credit they’ve at least found a way to get a few in (directly or indirectly).

Top six is a mess. Coolio seems to have regressed this year. LaCoast is more of the same. I’ve been underwhelmed by JT. I’m not sure where we are with Mika though its better than lastyear. Bread giveth and taketh, though I don’t think kids should play with him until well established. Sheary should not be here. They miss Tro but if that is what is keeping them from winning games its worse than we think

The team defense has (for most part) been better this season which takes some heat off the defensemen. I’d like Gavrikov to be more consistent. I’d like Fox to be moved to forward (ducks). Seriously, Fox just as a defender has not been a good look for a while, certainly not as a first pair. If Sully is patient, Robertson may turn out ok. He’s held his own though made a few mistakes which can be corrected. Soucy/Schneider is probably best for Schneider as he can expect the other guy to know what he’s suppose to do. Still think Schneider should be playing higher up but 🤷‍♂️

Rempe ate 2 big rights early in that fight from PR Reavo’s counter punching. Nice to see Reavo remember how to fight after being a pacifist while playing here…

Team has little jump, top 6 is a quagmire and Fox is a real negative in Dzone. Still need 15-20 games to assess who they are. Early returns are more trick than treat.

Rangers recall Brennan Othmann. I would not be surprised if Rempe upper body is either, concussion or broken jaw. He took a lot of big punches from a vert good fighter last night.
I thought this season was going to be different. First few games coverage in d zone was pretty good and you knew they would score sometime.
All of last years problems are still here. No. 13 and 10 are major concerns and don’t get me started on Fox.
With all the no move contracts it is going to be a very long time before this team is a contender again. Thank God for 1994. ( That was only 31 years ago) Hey at leasy we are not rooting for the Jets and the Knicks.

I don’t understand how people think this team is heading in the right direction. The problem is Dolan, it won’t change, sadly. I’m glad I got to see them win a cup. Alex – I am in the depression stage, as I realize that Drury is another GM for life, like Sather. I am very close to the acceptance stage, as I am on the edge of believing the Rangers will never win a Stanley Cup again in my lifetime. It’s just a terribly run organization from top to bottom with no hope in sight.

Cuylle starting to look a lot like Laf. It would not surprise me if he is the next busted draft pick in a long line of them.

BobbyO- The Rangers only hold prospects, 3rd and 4th liners and 3rd D pair accountable. The precious top 6 and top pairs on D can do whatever they want and continue to roll out with top minutes and special teams time. That is one of the biggest problems with this organization.

Laf is entitled and plays like it, now that he got his big contract. This organization (except 94) has always catered to the high salaried spoiled fat cats. Commitment to playing the right way is usually lacking in this organization.

It’s just so dam frustrating watching him taking a big step back, like most Ranger draft picks. Can’t help but worry that he will fall in line with the rest of the draft pick disappointments. I certainly hope I am wrong. Much of the Rangers success this year was contingent on him and Laf stepping up their games along with the “core” playing to their pre 2024 capabilities. So far, that is not the case. It’s so dam frustrating rooting for this team. The absolute worst part is that the Islanders probably have a much better upside in the next few years than the Rangers do. Their 1OA pick seems to be a yearly Norris candidate.

The problem with the Rangers is that the golden children are never held accountable. Accountability is reserved for 3rd and 4th liners and bottom pear Defense. The non-producing golden children continue to get rewarded with top 6 minutes and PP time. It creates a bad culture.

If you were Gavin McKenna and the Rangers get the 1OA pick this year, would you threaten to stay in college and force the Rangers to trade you, like Fox did with Canes?

LoneRanger – I am not advocating for him to be traded, just assuming that may be the reason he was called up based on the recent rumors about him and his slow start in Hartford. It seems like Perrault probably should have been the call up but they went with Othmann instead, even though he has no goals and only has one assist so far, Perrault not exactly lighting it up either but has 2 goals and 2 assists to lead Hartford.

I think the best way to look at this is Othmann is getting a chance to show the coach that he is better than Parsnip, Radish and theRelative. Don’t think coach wants to change the 4th line so I leave them out

It’s nice to see fellow posters realizing this franchise is going nowhere and needs a total rebuild. I get extremely frustrated and angry with stupidy thinking there yound kids are good and this team is going somewhere. The rangers will be battling the last 3 spots in there division. Deadline, sell, sell, sell.

Drury was the guy who got two picks from Dallas for a 1st and 4th pick

Kreider has missed the last three games with “illness”? Meanwhile trouba has started scoring some goals in his absence.

I believe somebody asked if we would still post on it when kreider stops scoring so 😉

The Rangers are a franchise wandering around in the dark unable to find the light switch!

The rangers drafting is still questionable unfortunately. If they don’t get that straight, nothing else will matter. I’m not impressed with the few guys I watched in the exhibition games before the season. There was only one guy I thought has potential but his name escapes me at the moment

The k miller trade was a good trade. I like that young defensemen Drury got in the deal.

No 1OA since Lindros has forced a trade and he was “the next one.” The NIL money may be good, but the 10A would pass up an NHL salary and a year toward UFA status for each year he stays in college. Also Fox wasn’t a first round pick and wasn’t playing in the NHL at 18 or 19 years old. It’s not a valid comparison. 1AOs go directly to the NHL.
