Rangers-4, Flyers-1

Good morning, boneheads!

This was one of those games with “L” written all over it. Long hiatus, against their struggling Divisional rivals. Flyers were going to win one at some point, no? And our boys were bound to lose one soon. Perfect setup? Nope, they came out and pretty much tried to put away an inferior team early. You need to beat teams you’re supposed to beat in order to make playoffs. Did I say playoffs? Sure did. 21 games in, 14-4-3, 10 games over .500. Why wouldn’t I?

A few thoughts:

  1. Probably the most important one. They have a goaltender who is capable of winning the Cup. Shesterkin didn’t have to do much at all until that 5 minutes penalty at the beginning of period two. But when he had to step in, he was unbelievable. No words. That’s what you want from your goaltender to win it all- step up when you need him most.
  2. First minutes of period one- a little pond hockey, back and forth, with our boys showing who is a superior team. Then the PP. I think I would start the second PP unit first next game they play. Too many passes, most are wishful. Including a couple by Panarin. Second unit? Pass, pass, bomb from the point by Trouba. One-zip. Trouba has a heavy shot. Naturally, it’s more effective when he hits the net.
  3. Lafreniere isn’t afraid to do what Kreider does on PP. He is taking away goalie’s eyes, he will learn how to do it better. His game is coming together, I have no doubts. I actually thought Chytil touched Trouba’s shot.
  4. Speaking of Chytil. Maybe I am reading too many posts by Wicky, but he is starting to get on my nerves as well. He is the only one of the kid line who doesn’t know what to do once he enters the zone. O or D zone, doesn’t matter. I’d think he’d learn after so many years in this league.
  5. Let’s be honest. The Flyers are miles away from the formidable, cup contending team they were a couple of years ago. What happened exactly? No idea. I don’t care much either. I didn’t know Atkinson was dressed until they got that 5 min PP. I don’t think that Atkinson-Voracek trade was good for either team. Hayes is a shadow of himself. Though I’d give him a break after the tragedy he went through. Plus, he is coming back after injury. I forgot they had Yandle. I think all he does these days is trying to break the iron man record, and not much else. The only player I noticed was Frost. Two high stick penalties ( one resulting in goal against) and a goal.
  6. Hunt supplements Panarin and Strome pair to create a formidable troika very well. As did many straight line, “let’s go get the puck” players before him. Panarin will also make Dryden Hunt a millionaire if GG continues to play them together. I think Hunt will make the most of it. Just don’t expect him to make precision passes and score a lot. The shot from the slot that Hart made an “amazing” (as per Joe) save on? Panarin buries this one 10 out of 10. The moment I said it to myself last night, Hunt scores a very high skill goal. Except, apparently, he just whiffed on his shot, as per Steve.
  7. Kaapo Kakko. I will give a lot of credit to DQ for helping Kakko to become a player he is about to become. And that is a complete package. He will start scoring more and more, no doubt. But his game off the puck is becoming top notch. Forecheck, backcheck, work on the wall. Very impressive!
  8. It should’ve been at least 4-0 after first. And don’t get me started on that missed offside call. And I usually do not complain about officiating. But that was blatant.
  9. I actually thought Hunt left his feet on his hit. I know Braun turned his back, but still Hunt saw his numbers all the way. I am going to look again, but I thought he left his feet.
  10. Very similar hit by Reaves in the third. Same player, Braun. Reaves doesn’t leave his feet, no penalty. Reaves, by the way, is listed at 6-2, 225. He looks much bigger than 225 to me.
  11. I love watching Ryan Lindgren. He is a very smart player. It’s easy to say everyone can be smart playing with Fox, but it’s not only that. I think his ice vision is sometimes overlooked because of his physicality.
  12. Signing Nemeth is looking better and better. Not only he solidified their third pair position, he is also paired with Trouba on PK. And he and Trouba clear the crease very well when need to. I am still perplexed on them playing Lundkvist though. He doesn’t struggle as much anymore, but that’s about it.
  13. Man, that goal by Kreider at the beginning of third that put it away? Men against boys. Russian troika of 70th-80th against AHL.
  14. Kreider-Monster. Does anyone still have issues with his contract?
  15. Didn’t look good on Goodrow at all. Let’s hope GG is right, and he will be fine. They can’t really afford to have him and Blais out.
  16. They ended up playing with 10 forwards in the third. That’s when I thought it was very impressive. Surgical execution, they gave the Flyers ugotz!
  17. I was hoping with the 3-1 score Shesterkin gets his shot at EN goal. Well, another Russian did it for him. Even EN goals Panarin scores are with flair. Took it away from Giroux (woof!), and put it in the net in one motion
  18. Too bad Carp isn’t writing anymore because I’d like to read what he has to say about Stan Fischler. Say what you want about him, but he is a hockey legend.
  19. I think I have to give some incentives to people in order for them to fill the ledge. It’s been empty for some time, and I see plenty of spider webs.
  20. Speaking of incentives. There will be another ticket contest tomorrow.

    Well done ilb, thank you.
I think the eventually address the 6th D spot with a veteran rental. Especially if they are going to make the playoffs. I’m not a big Vally guy, but he mentioned last night that Braun is considered a “turner” around the league. Found that interesting.

I think Kakko game has a lot to do with this coach trusting him. The previous coach would have dropped him down in the lineup because he had not scored a point yet. This coach was patient, was able to see how hard Kakko was playing, and has the vision to see that they are going to need Kakko. Dropping him down, and hurting his confidence, would hurt the team in the long run.

    Great job ILB

    Agree with everything

Except I don’t think hunt left his feet. He was pivoting backward and as they say the momentum of the contact simultaneous had that natural lift

Thank goodness they killed off the 5 min

The saves with Troubas stick we’re very exciting

    Trouba playing awesome right now.

Just a thought on face shields. I guess they are not made of something that is unbreakable. The way Goodrow went off last night it looked to me like a serious eye injury. Hope he is OK. In the future whoever manufactures this equipment should look into changing whatever it is made of. Hell of a way to end a career. I remember seeing Bernie Parrent taking a stick to the eye many years ago. Since then The Flyers have had nothing but trouble in goal. I believe after his injury face mask design changed to protect the eye socket better.

Great write Ilb! A boring win v the Filth, will take it every time.
    .
Salmon Joe feeling sorry for Filth is just about the last straw with those Two Stooges. Really annoying to listening to them to babble on about nothing every game.
Sam’s game call…’good play by…’ Joe’s ‘color’…NYR is struggling again. I feel bad for Sam, he is done but Joe is inexcusable; really sux at his job.
    .
In another age like last season or so, McEwen might have started up something but I guess he didn’t want a shiner on the right side to match the one on his left. Quiet as a church mouse. Wonder why because there is no such thing as a deterrent I have been told over and over…
    .
Claude Giroux…bwahahahahahaha. Crusty the clown show; how much is he stealing from them every game. Weak sauce.
    .
Elaine is softer than a mashed potato sandwich; made Eunuchs out of these men. Damn shame.

Great recap ilb! I love reading those points. I agree with all of them and said some to myself during and after the game. Mainly they can’t afford to have Blais and Goodrow out. Might have been Fox’s worst play (not the first period) in his career last night. Third was better for everyone.

I wasn’t able to watch last night but notice in the stat sheet that Gauthier only played 8:29 despite the rangers being down a forward. Was there any mention of that during the game or post-game? I also saw a clip of a very salty Georgiev giving Igor a less than perfunctory congratulations after the game.

  16. St Pete Eli Avatar

Chytil may eventually figure it out and become what he was drafted to be. However what is needed now is a quality 3C. Imagine Kadri between Lafreniere and Gauthier? I’m not saying that he available just making my point.

Also I will say it again the Rangers desperately need a quality back up NOW!

  17. cregg7 Avatar
    cregg7

BW. I think it was a simple as when hunt and Goodrow went down it was easier to manage throwing 3 lines out there and Goat was the odd man out. Easier to keep rhythm that way at that point.

When hunt was out goat got a couple shifts up with strome I beleive.

Also. The PK time kept him off the ice too.

OK, raise your hand if you thought NYR would be tied for second in the division in early December. Nobody? Me neither. GG and his staff are hitting all the right notes. Henk Jr, Boy George and Flip-flop are the weak links, but they can be replaced from inside (3RD, 2G) and out (3C). Also want another big banger to play with Reavo on 4th line.
    .
Kakko is a wizard with that puck on his stick. Looks like a yo-yo in the way he dangles it. Kid has more hockey smarts than Meeka already. Could have 30 assists if he keeps it up. Impressive.

Ilb I mentioned your #12 while watching the game with the Filthy friend. Nemeth has been pretty solid/stable out there, still perplexed on the attachment to Nils.

Agree on your #9 and disagree with BDL that DQ would have put him down lineup for not scoring. DQ was likely to move you for not doing the things you should be doing with/without the puck and those you should not. Scoring was definitely secondary, he wanted the kids to learn to play a 200′ game foremost.

I’ve read a ton of grief dealing posts regarding Nemeth this season. From what I’ve been seeing since I’ve had a bit more time to actually watch some games is that he seems to have to fend off big time scoring opportunities while also cleaning up his partner’s mistakes out there. No one is going to confuse the guy with Roman Josi but I don’t see what all the fuss is about unless he was really putrid compared to how he’s played the last 4-5 games.
It’s a bad situation when Joe calls a snow angel the ‘perfect play’. It’s a terrible play going down like that it just happened to be the right play at the time and it worked.

As for Nils. I know some of you walk around with a roll of nickels in your pocket thinking about all that offense he can provide, but maybe it’s time to solidify that third d-pairing with a defender.

My two concerns still remain the lack of a quality 3C/faceoffs and the goal differential. Both have to improve if they do in fact get a chance at the second season. When I heard them discussing Laf and Goat communicating in French when they’re on the ice, I was thinking about how nice it would be to have a big 2-way center that was French-Canadian playing between those two guys.

Ilb – I’ve looked at the CBA and am unclear about player obligation, if any, when given an offersheet.

1- In most cases financially it would be in their best interest to sign but I don’t see anything that says they are actually obligated to sign an unsolicted offer sheet?

2- If they get an offer sheet of $6m for 5yrs can they still negotiate with current club, prior to signing the offer sheet? IE, could they go to current team and say “I’d like to stay, can you do $5.5 for 6?” or perhaps slightly less money than the offer but with NMC/NTC? Or would all of that be considered ‘circumvention’?

    .
Sam is an icon; he is just here longer than he should be and forever cursed this franchise with his sheet call after 94 Cup win. A Lifetime? How many does he think we have?? I guess if one was born in 1941, he is damn near clairvoyant.

I am always ready to admit when I am wrong. Earlier this year I said that Shesterkin may not be the answer to the Rangers goaltending issues. Think Sam on his own (or without a clown next to him) would be ok and more focused on the play by play than engaging prattle from color guy.

5 years Ilb…5 years of “experience” in the nhl (various lengths).

It’s an expectations thing that some have for a first round reach pick (it’s what was said by the organization taking a “chance” on a player with their second first round pick in a draft) that plays one zone and has some YouTube highlights.

He’s not going to be what the fanboys want him to based on YouTube, he isn’t. He’s not that guy and doesn’t have the fortitude required to be that guy in the nhl, he just doesn’t.

The team most likely will add a vet d man regardless of the nils spot. Most teams in the playoffs go 8 or 9 d men deep. If they add a vet d it will be regardless of the nils spot, not because of it.

I do not know whether they can use an offer sheet in order to negotiate a better contract with their current team. I wouldn’t think so, but I do not know for sure. once the offer sheet is signed, however, it’s a contract.

  61. Wicky Avatar

Speaking of strome and contracts…I was listening to a pod a couple of days ago (sorry, don’t don’t remember what pod but I think it was a Vince M. comment/interview) and he said strome is very important in the room as well as on the ice (that sounds really really familiar).

He had heard over the past season or two whispers about them moving strome but now that he’s back around the team and players again and hearing and seeing what’s going on in house regularly, he’s not so sure they ever really wanted to part with him or intend to (paraphrasing). He said it’s going to be interesting to see if they can keep him and how it gets done if they do, but he’s 100% sure he a lot more important than many people think on and off the ice to the organization and his teammates.

I’d love to see them keep him and get a real nhl centre in the Chytil spot, just not sure how that gets done with respect to the cap….not sure I see a path realistically to doing that.

Yes, I still think he’s overpaid and the easiest higher dollar contract to replace with a lower one that gives “similar” on ice ability.

We can all get together and hold hands around lit candles and chant his name, but he’s been enigma for years for a reason. I really hope he breaks the franchise goal record this year and continues his goal scoring pace for the rest of his career. While that would all be great, I’m going to guess this doesn’t continue for the life of his contract and while it’s awesome at the moment, last year he spent time as a third liner and pp role player. At some point the cap might become an issue and he’s more replaceable (as the enigma, not current goal pace) from within than a lot of other guys.

Overall, personally I want the rangers to keep him as long as the cap permits it and I really want him to keep up this goal pace and break the franchise record on the way to lifting the Cup as one of the 47 “A” wearers of the team.

    Wicky,
In talking about Kreider and his contract last year, I said that you could expect one career year, and down year, and 5 of his norm. 20 goals and 40 points. This season is shaping up to be his career year. I also think that Gallant trusts, and believes in him, and that is big for Kreider.

Vince in that same podcast compared Strome, and JT Miller. Using real numbers, and fake numbers. Strome came out ahead according to Vince. I’m not really sure how you compare two players who’s styles are very different. To me that would not be about numbers, but about what is your style preference.

    According to heat maps:

    1) Chytil has been great this year. I’m still not seeing it.
    2) Lundkvist has been good despite having Nemeth as a partner. Nemeth is bad expect for PK. I’m not seeing it.
    3) NYR continue to win only because of Igor. And if he wasn’t on the team (stupid argument), they’d be 3-14-3. I think Igor has done his job exceptionally, and I had questions about him coming into the season too. But they have also won because they have some guys that know how to do that when they’re no playing their A game.
    4) Unsustainable.

Problem is the new fan uses heat maps as the Bible. It’s part of the story for sure, but not end all, be all.

If you are watching the games, and then using the heat maps as a way to add to the enjoyment of watching the game, I’m good with that. Problem with most, not all heat mappers, is that they don’t watch the games, and they use the heat maps as a way to decide who’s good, and who’s not. Who played well, and who did not.

But I always tend to think teams keep the players they want to keep. They find ways.

Hank gives you +1.5 mil, Beverly costs you -.5 mil, georgiev plus his replacement give you +1.5 mil…that’s an additional 2.5 mil.

If Barron replaces Chytil, that’s another (roughly) +1.5 mil.

That’s addressing the Chytil spot issue with Barron though and not considering a player add that might be more than a rental.

Also not taking into consideration Blais and other contracts that are upcoming.

If they need to make a move that involves freeing up money they’ll demote Georige. It seems clear as day that Igor is going to be the one playing. The tandem days are over. So it Georgiev’s tenure as a Ranger by end of the season.

Gauthier’s limited minutes probably just GG shortening up the bench after Goodrow got hurt. He’s not exactly a defensive wizard.

One of Horvat or Miller is probably realistic by the deadline. Until then I mean, dissect it all you want but they’re 14-4. They’re tied 2nd in the East. Who is a much better team? Not Washington. Carolina? Maybe. In fact let’s say yes. That’s one team that’s better than them in the East. That’s a far far cry from where they team had been before Drury took over. No reason to be all EV about their current lineup : D

ilb, I also thought Chytil tipped Truba’s shot ever so slightly on the goal.

The Filth are not a contender so I won’t get too worked up about the victory. Some positives to take away but they need to learn to not take their foot off the gas after going up 3-0. A game that would have been closer last year or two but for their improved play defensively and away from the puck.

I thought Bread’s EN goal shouldn’t have counted. Looks to me like he got his stick up in Claude’s hands when he stole the puck. Refs put their whistles away early trying to avoid shenanigans?

Wow, Georgie had quite the sour puss on at game’s end. Forecasting changes are afoot?

Only games I can think of where the Rangers really looked outclassed this year were the 2 against Calgary and opening night against Washington. Sure they had a couple of games they maybe should have lost and Igor stole it, but the goalie is a player too. Other teams don’t apologize when their goalies turn into Tretiak against us. Trading Chytil because he isn’t the guy you need on your team or because his realistic nhl play level doesn’t meet the ridiculous pipe dream expectations some fans incorrectly placed on him is not giving up on him. It’s simply moving him to get a player that fits better (from within the organization or outside) in the lineup than he does.

Me too. The thing is Chytil doesn’t fit what this team needs at 3C. That along with a solid RD for the 3rd pair and a quality back up goalie is what gives them a really good shot at going deep if they do make the playoffs.

How do you solve a problem like Fil Chytil (it scans if you squint sideways)? Gallant seems to like that kid line but they’re not putting too many picks in the net. On the right side they have KK, hunt, Sammy Baugh, Reaves and possibly kravtsov. Throw Chytil in the mix (if you’re signing Strome and don’t think Chytil is a 3c type (which is hard to argue against), that’s a lot to choose from. Never mind Big Red Barron. The depth has served them well this year

It would be different if Nils were 6’2 and 210 or more. He’s 5’11 and 187, only 4lbs more than the Fox pony. And Lindgren, tough as he may be, is only 6’1 191.

Even if Nils starts putting up some points, the defensive skill needs to be high to offset the negative on size, especially come playoff time. Unfortunate that he doesn’t have Hayek’s better size (6’3, 206).

The real squeeze will come in 24-26. Even with another round of bridge deals to Kakko and Laffy and with a 2C at 4.5M, they will need to part ways with at least one of Kreider, Trouba and likely Lindgren too in 25/26. And that is paying Igor 8.5 in 25/26.

They can probably find a way to get through 24/25 with an 85 cap, but 25/26 they will need to move on from at least one big contract, maybe more depending how Kakko and Laf deals shake out (bridges vs big paydays).

You stack prospects and once you have a team that’s playoff competitive, you do what you need to do to make the team better if you can do it.

Only 1 team would have more points than the rangers if the rangers won their potential games in hand on them

    Meaning

Toronto 35 points in 24 games
Rangers 31pts in 21 games. If rangers got a max 6 pts from those 3 games in hand. The rangers would be at 37pts in 24 games.

    Rangers 31pts in 21 games.

    Leafs 35pts in 24g
    Panthers 33pts in 22g
    Caps 33pts in 23g

    Wild 31pts in 22g
    Flames 31pts in 22g

Seems huge. But it’s not. First off it’s day by day and shift by shift.

But secondly it’s two 11 game clips. Columbus to this morning. 3 weeks time. 8 games. December will be more condensed.

Getting to the halfway mark is a 10 game clip heading into the Xmas break and a 12 game clip coming out of it culminating in a game again Carolina in Carolina…

Speaking of offer sheets. The AAV for each compensation tier has gone down slightly comparing to last season. The average player salary last year was lower than the previous year, triggering a decrease in the AAV ranges for each offer sheet compensation tier.
In Kappo’s case, anything over $10,279,829 AAV triggers 4 first rounders. That, for instance, means a 7 year deal at $7,343,445

Anson Carter doing post game for Isles last night. He didn’t seem to have his heart in it. Isn’t there a former Isle they can call in?

Well with Laffy all but gone to Montreal I guess they should probably plan on selling at the deadline.
I’m sure Lou Lam and Yzerman will fleece Drury during the fire sale too.
    Right?

I think with their backs to a wall they’d part with Robertson over Jones.
And I’m not a fan of that idea.
I believe that Robertson-Schneider could be a pair on this blue line for a long time.

With the talk by some of dealing Miller, isn’t it too early to give up on a player w/ so much potential? He’s young, big, skates very well and hasn’t been playing the position his whole “career”. It’s a fact that D men take longer to develop. I think it would be a long line of teams that would be interested.
