Rangers-4, Panthers-3

Good morning, boneheads!

First of all, we have a winner. Congratulations, CCCP!

Three people predicted the score-St. Pete, CCCP and SN.

Nobody predicted the GWG.

All three went over the Rangers shots.

CCCP won by predicting Panthers’ shots ( closest, without going over ) , 40 to 45

If someone else thinks they won this contest and my calculations are wrong, please let me know. Otherwise we will make it official.

Second, I am extremely disappointed with the Athletic. Second game in a row, no review. Nothing about the Rangers. Let’s hope they find someone soon…

No time to write a full review, sorry. It’s too bad because I have a lot to say. So a few random thoughts:

  1. Kreider should be named their Captain and very soon. He is their true leader. On and off the ice. I hope you listened to his interview after Calgary debacle. And yeah, it’s not how many goals he scored. It’s how, and from where, he scored them.
  2. We have an elite goaltender. I believe he will have his ups and downs, every one of them does. But Shesterkin will be in the Vezina conversation for many seasons to come.
  3. I am going to give a lot of credit to Gallant. He made an adjustment between first and second that led to them intercepting many Florida passes and therefore disrupting their flow. We haven’t seen in-game adjustments since…..Torts?
  4. Ryan Reaves hits. And I mean, he hits. The D-men are going to be reluctant to go in corners when he’s on the ice. Did he and MacKenzie Weegar had some kind of previous encounter? Because Weegar must still be sitting in the ice tub as we speak.
  5. Speaking of Reaves. There was a scrum around Shesterkin ( there were a few) when Mason Marchment was given someone a face wash and subtle punches. By the way, his dad was one of the dirtiest players to ever play this game. I hated him. Anyway, Reaves skating around the net and grabbed him. That was it. You could see Mason wanted nothing to do with Reaves. He is a very calming presence. Both on the ice and when he is sitting on the bench. Probably why they haven’t had any fights yet.
  6. Zibanejad’s defensive play is undervalued and underappreciated.
  7. Miller with the highlight reel goal. Beautiful play, no doubt. Except my preference would be for him to concentrate on his D play. He has regressed this season somewhat, IMO. I think he will get better.
  8. Do they really have another 5 day break? Followed by back to back? Ugh…

The play Kreider made before his goal was a thing of beauty. Knocked Gudas off the puck, and passed to Panarin in one motion.

Until Panarin and Zibanejad fully buy in, it’s going to be a struggle.

GReat write up ILB – nobody cares about the grammar. Reavo needs another partner on the 4th line to serve as bookends; Hunt has been very good on the wall but doesn’t have the girth to match the grit; size matters.
They need this week to practice as still a new coach, new system with inexperienced players. When the D decided to redirect the puck and not force it up the boards where the Puddy Cats were waiting, good things happened.
Fox is so good, another highlight reel goal doesn’t get a mention. That was the most important goal of the game IMHO. Short handed, one goal leading, end of period; the dagger! Kid is so so so good. I do believe they should put Miller with him and put Lindgren with Tuba. Every goal mouth scrum features Fox and Lindgren on the arses around the crease or in the net.
Meeka and Bread still have some bad selfish habits wanting O at the expense of D when having a lead. Habits are eas to make, hard to break.

It’s a fine line with Panarin. You don’t want to take his creativity away. It’s what makes him great, but he does need to play within the teams structure. I think he and Gallant need to meet somewhere in the middle.

    Very well done, ilb.

You possess good insight that’s valuable – even more appreciated in the post-Carpian Era.

Zibanejad is very good defensively, but yes did make that fly-by that lead to goal 3 for the Puddy Tats.

Was it me or did Shesterkin look very upset (with himself?) after the 3rd goal (my 8-year old noticed this too) — even failing to come out for the games 1st star recognition? This guy comes out to COMPETE.

ILB – fantastic write up! I love coming here the day after and reading a quick recap.
I very much agree with point 5. Carp always says it does not matter if a guy like Reaves is there – it doesn’t deter anything. I’ve always disagreed with that take. Teams are starting to learn they can’t push us around like they have been. Players like Reaves do make a difference.
Also starting to come around and agree with point 6 about Zibanejad.
Thank you for a great write up!

BDL – agree; thought Lindgren got a little greedy on that play jumping into the zone; Bread can’t help himself, but that is an East-West pass through 2 defenders you cannot make with a 3rd period lead.

Funny that Bread is racking points but still does not look himself yet. good sign.

BDL-I’m pretty sure it took some time for Torts and Panarin to meet in the middle. Not worried. I don’t think Gallant is stubborn. Panarin is still a PPG player at the moment. And he still sets up important goals. Except first time in his NHL career his a minus player. It’s only 13 games though. Long season

  14. ilb2001 Avatar

Telling Panarin to stop playing E-W and dump and chase would be similar to telling Reaves to go out there and play, except he can’t hit or fight.

BDL the problem with Kakko is he wants to stickhandle the puck to the net. Even the called off goal resulted from too many damn moves and not being able to shoot. I am starting to wonder if he’s just not too bright

    bobbyo2019

Dont think GG was very happy with his top 6 in the 3rd. You have a commanding lead against a good team just get pucks deep with no high risk plays that come back the other way. They were starting to get it a bit as period progressed but it has be reinforced

BDL, I am not telling you anything g you don’t already know but over the next 8 years you should probably just accept that 93 is who he is and this is what they’ll get from him.

  20. James G Avatar
    James G

I’ll be honest I’m finding it difficult to follow this team this year. When I read up on them the writers have a negative tone, read feedback or talk to fans and they’re disgusted.
Very strange feeling this season. Almost like their supposed supporters aren’t supporting them.

That’s not a knock on this blog. To be honest again, I’ve read very little here because with the exception of few, most just want to belly ache about who they have here, who they had here and who other teams have that they should have gotten.

Too bad it’s too risky to challenge a goalie interference

If that goal isn’t allowed a good chance it’s a shutout for Shesty. That goal gave them life. And it was clearly interference.

There should not be a penalty for a review. The goal is to get it right.

NFL and NBA and MLB don’t have penalties for reviews and many reviews are automatic without coaches needing to challenge

Bobby, I think Gallant is beginning to realize that there is a big flaw within the core of this team. Maybe he gave some of these guys the benefit of the doubt before the season and is realizing what some of them truly are.

I mean…They added veterans, some guys with Championships, experience, pedigree etc. still not much different. For a decade I’ve heard about them needing to adjust to systems, needing to do this needing to do that…it’s old.

  24. bobbyo2019 Avatar
    bobbyo2019

James I think I some of the guys added (Goodrow, Blais, Reaves, Hunt) have made a difference especially since alot of these wins would have been losses last year. More responsible defensively and understand the importance of forechecking, boardwork and cycling. As they move forward if some of the core doesn’t make appropriate changes they won’t be getting as much ice when they have leads in 3rd period.

  25. ljreina Avatar

I’ve always appreciated your specific takes on the team ILB, and agree with you. Say what you will about this team, but they have to learn more effectively how to protect leads and close out games. That they’re winning tells me they have the tools. They have to find the consistent will to win. And as for The Athletic, I’m this close to cancelling. Waiting to see their next move. But two days without a story after two games? Ridiculous.

If Panarin can’t make smart plays with his team protecting a 2 goal lead in the 3rd period; this team is screwed for the foreseeable future. Stupid play will get him nailed to pine by GG when protecting leads against good teams.
    .
This is a new regime focused on winning games, not Rockette style leg kicks so the fan boys get all excited. Might not be a good fit moving forward. Bears close watching on what Bread thinks is most important.
    .
Stromeo and KK are much bigger issues than Bread, but when a guy eating 7% of your cap can’t make smart plays because “he’s a scorer”; does not bode well for the future of a playoff team.

James – you may want to give the team until the end of 2021 and give GG some time to recalibrate the MO of seasons with a rookie coach. This team needs to play smarter with the puck and the yutes got to start growing a pair and contributing with and away from the puck

  31. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

SN don’t break what isn’t broken, leave Fox and Lindgren together. As to them sometimes getting knocked around in the crease – at least they are trying to get the other guy out of it, some of our other dmen not so much.

  32. Beezle Avatar

Puddycats must be asking wtf they needed to do to win last night.

FLA 91 shots, 45 on goal
NYR 37 shots, 18 on goal

In the long run, not a winning formula for NYR or any team. Good bounce back game for Igor.

  33. SN Avatar
    SN

Beez – Not sure it’s broken per se, just better complementary pairings. Fox can play with anyone and Lindgren and Tuba would be a better pairing IMHO. Getting Miller off the first match up D pair and giving Tuba a partner who thinks D first is a win all the way around.
Not the biggest challenge, but too many times they are being bounced around.

Would say the biggest issue on D is Henk Jr, who looks overmatched at times and makes curious decisions with puck including floating lifeless wristers from the point to kill an extended ozone possessions. As feared, his ‘big’ shot from Sweden is not translating to pros.

I am not one to be giving up on Lafreniere this early in his career, especially under the circumstances of the last couple years. My question is where does he fit on this roster as a #1 pick (LW) with Kreider and LOAF on the left side? Does he play on the the supposedly 3rd checking line for at least the foreseeable future? How does that help his development? Asking for a friend.? I doubt very seriously if Kreider to the right side is the best answer. Krakko can shoot the puck he just doesn’t do it enough.

James – KK seeems like a better 3rd line choice now than Laffy who cannot play RW so leaves him at LW3 if they insist on CK20 on Left. KK is a very good player away from the puck, his challenge seems to be a high level skill of stickhandling which was fun when he was playing keep away growing up in squirts but needs to translate to NHL game. Ironically, it’s a skill set which would look VERY good playing center.

I cancelled the Athletic the day Carp retired. He was the only reason I subscribed in the first place. Of course, what that means is that it will not auto renew so I have access until February. They have not replaced Carp other than having Arthur Staple write on them occasionally. Nothing against Arthur, who is an excellent read. I am sure they will approach me with the cut rate deal before then. As for the club, they do not backcheck well and their D are diving in deep in the zone and getting caught far too often. Too many 3 on 2’s and 4 on 2’s entering the zone, and ineffective play resulting in their being pinned in the zone for extended shifts. They do not have the puck nearly enough and opponents are crashing the net with no consequences. The pack mentality they showed early in the season seems to have disappeared.

Brooksie hammered the team in his latest article for looking like the teams of years past since AV took over…. And you know what, he’s 100% right.
Our record, while respectable, is NOT a reflection of how good this team has played… It’s a reflection of how good Shesty has played. Furthermore… if I were Shesty, I’d be livid with being hung out to dry the way he was yesterday, not to mention being run into on numerous occasions with nobody stepping up to put those offenders on their backside.

I’m sorry, but they’re a house of cards and when Igor eventually slumps/gets injured…. they’ll be exposed for who they really are unless GG gets them playing the right way.

Whoever it was (JamesG I think) that says their Achilles heel is their lack of defensive centers is 100 percent correct. We really did need someone like Danault.

Not sure why folks think they are going to coast into the playoffs this season in their division with is stacked with talented vet teams and rosters who have played their system for more than 13 games. Appreciate the write-up, Ilb. I agree with your #6 point about ZBJ. I see him make a lot of good defensive plays. Don’t know what everybody else is watching.

I’m guessing that nobody on the team felt good about the win last night. At the end, when ZBJ and Kreider met up at the door to go off the ice, they weren’t smiling like they usually are after a win.

Finally, I think this week off will do them good. With a few games under their belts, they should now have a good idea of what they need to work on before their season resumes.

I wrote the same thing as Brooks the last 2 games. Flames players were chasing Fox all aver the ice and Kylington cheapshotted him and got 2:00 with no response from the Rangers. Last night, Shesterkin was taking abuse from the start and no response from the newfangled “team toughness.” Somebody should have planted Anthony Duclair and worse to Patrik Hornquist. I don’t blame Shesterkin for being pissed off.

I have no complaints about the 7-3-3 start. They are simply learning to play the game the right way within a system. It’s going to take time. They either get it right this time or the lifetime continues. My complaints remain the same organizational mismanagement. Of draft picks, bad luck on draft picks, or just plan dumb azz draft picks.

I dont think the Rangers’ play has been deserved of 7-3-3, but given the personnel changes in the lineup and on the bench, and given the fact that they’ve played 9 of the first 12 on the road, including 2 trips to Canada, they’re doing ok.

Being happy about getting points is one thing, ignoring the flashing danger signs another. Don’t think the ‘just win baby’ of 14 game football seasons translates too well to 82 games of hockey.

Don’t want him back behind the bench, but Torts was always brutally honest about their performance – win or lose. Would he have been all smiles after the last win or a few others?

After a refreshing start of playing responsibly, standing up for each other, etc – it starts to feel like a regression into the 2019/20 team. Hopefully GG makes good use of the practice time this week.

What they do with Strome is the biggest question I have. Whether you think Strome is a product of Panarin or not, he is clearly important to Panarin. Listened to a podcast yesterday that said it’s better than 50% the Rangers trade Strome. I wonder if his on ice relationship with Panarin makes Drury think twice before trading him, and checks to see if Strome may be affordable to keep.

  134. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

That question is a reason to play Panarin with either Zibanejad or Chytil for an extended amount of time. If you trade Strome, who is the center that will make Panarin happy.

  135. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

Think people are making way, way too much out of ‘learning a new system.’

How many “systems” are there for hockey and how different are they from each other? Are there really systems that do not encourage fore/back checking by forwards? Ignore opponents in your crease? Do some discourage N/S play? Did the players all say ‘wow, I’ve never ever played in a system like this before!’

The problem isn’t “learning” – it is in the commitment/desire to play the way coach asks you to play. Not what makes you the player happy or feel better about your individual effort.

  136. St Pete Eli Avatar
    St Pete Eli

Are we trying to make Bread happy when a Stanley cup or is both what’s important?

  137. SN Avatar
    SN

Situational hockey is the challenge when ‘adjusting’ to a new system. The players’ role and responsibility change based upon puck and player position during a game so it’s not a ‘system’ per se, more of a set of principles that the coach is trying to reinforce.
    .
Settled play definitely has an approach the coach wants to employ. For instance v Fla., the Puddy Cats we’re using a deep middle outlet in neutral zone, forcing one of the D to cheat towards middle and open up the wing for the forward streaking down the outside. Requires two very good passes and counters a team trying lock D to one side on break out. In second period, NYR left the 3rd forward in the middle and they made some clean takeaways, leading to odd man rushes.
    .
Add in the inexperience of the roster and, yes, there is a learning curve for both coach and players on how best to play winning hockey. This is a brand new coaching staff save for Benny, 3 new players and 8 regulars with less than 200 NHL games played.

  138. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

BDL even if Bread/Zika did click, would the output be at least equal to what they get now with them split up? Two coaches have both decided to play them as 1a/1b. Seems the answer to your question would be to try Chytil there for 10 or 15 games. (Not holding my breath it works out)

They can probably squeeze Strome under the cap next year, not sure if there will be other ufas with similar skills/competency for meaningfully less coin. If they do part ways my guess it will be a trade for an RFA around Strome’s current cap.

Beezle, even if they find a way to squeeze in Strome on a longterm deal, that means there would be almost no room for any other meaningful changes until they can get out of one or more of trouba’s or kreider’s contracts in two or 3 seasons. i’m not at all convinced Strome is that important a player

Not sure who the center is, but much rather try and get a rising 2c/3c then be wedded to Strome, given his own limitations and what it means for rest of roster.
