Kreiders post game comments were interesting. i think we can deduce who he was not talking about. That would Phil D, Rooney, Blackwell, and Lemieux. Question is, was he going big game hunting, Zibanejad and Panarin. Those two are clearly the biggest culprits.

You would have to think at noon today, Smith gets put on waivers.

DQ post also brought up how they were chasing themselves defensively because of turnovers trying to force offense. Another last year problem come back again.

The rangers are a flawed team. Mixture of veterans and rookies. Rangers are the youngest team in hockey. They are very weak at center, probably the 2nd most important position in hockey behind goaltending, have some players playing out of position. JD and Gorton have there work cut out for them to figure out how to correct these issues.

For cap reasons alone Smith should be in taxi squad on off days. No one is claiming him at that salary.

They have to bring on another center who can actually play the position ASAP. Joked before about sending Tony to Calgary for Bennet, tho doubt they’d take him, but maybe Howden, Hajek or Gauthier would get it done.

Spot on the 2 most important positions in hockey and we suck at both so far! I suppose we could add DQ to the mix

And because of the deficiency at center the young wings suffer and get disciplined by our Preppy coach.

Just finished watching the game again, Kreider definitely referring to Panarin and Zibanejad. Shift after shift the two of them went sideways. Buchnevich hasn’t scored in a bit, but man is he playing good hockey. Kakko was good away from the puck, and along the boards. Miller was a roller coaster. Some great, some not so much. Lindgren strong. An angry Trouba is a good Trouba. He was angry last night.

Back in the dark days, Sam and JD used to drive me crazy. They never acknowledge how bad the Rangers were. You’d think they perennial cup contenders in those days, not a mess who had not made the playoffs in ages. Well the beats are doing the same thing. See no evil. Speak no evil. Disappointing to say the least.

  15. Bdl Avatar

    Eli,
First off, welcome back. I think part of the reason the young wingers struggle is because Zibanejad, and Panarin do there own thing. Trying to figure out what to do when playing with those guys can’t. I’m ok with Panarin playing that way, they knew this when they signed him. But your top center cannot be constantly free lancing. He needs to stay within the structure of the team.

I hope they trade down this year with their lottery pick and get a young veteran center. They don’t need another 18 year old learning at the NHL level next year. I’m also hoping for a different coach next year who does more than talk a good game.

I think it’s time to put Shesterkin in net and give him a few games to ride it out. They’re both rusty and aren’t seeing as many shots in stretches. Time to establish number one goaltender. This isn’t working, they needed one extra save or two and didn’t get it

Another big difference between placing Kakko and Co on waivers as opposed to Smith/JJ and other vets on waivers for cap saving purposes is that Kakko and other youngsters are being punished by losing money every day because they’re on two-way contracts. Smith/JJ and other vets are on one way contracts, they aren’t losing a penny.

  23. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

I haven’t had time to to read Carp’s article yet, but its title says it all. If they had structure they’d be able to close one game goals. Has nothing to do with team being young. Youngsters, in fact, are easier to teach structure, if they had any.

What I take from the goalie rotation and the comments valley cat made last night.

They want to do this for a couple weeks so that both goalies get real practices in with Allaire so he can dial them in from a mechanics standpoint

I’ve heard on podcasts that teams aren’t practicing and aren’t gonna have many practices this season. So they are setting a set schedule to allow both goalies to get heavy workouts and on ice time with allaire, bc they know they are rusty technically.

I don’t think they would be doing this if they didn’t think it were the lesser of two evils.

Barring a trade or Hajek solidifying a spot and Tony D learning how to be a defenseman, i think Smith is gonna be kept in this same rome(game or two here and then sit, rinse and repeat).

Definitely think Bidetto needs to get a shot as he can’t be worse than either of Tony, Johnson or Smith, and i’d say Hajek should get a stretch for the same reason.

Yea none of the writers are calling out Q or Gorton and JD for getting us to this spot and nor are they really taking the vets to task. Instead we keep hearing how this is such a young team, which is true, but it’s the veterans who have been the biggest culprits

  44. ilb2001 Avatar

The Ranger roster is a puzzle with missing pieces it seems. So therefore I suppose it can be difficult for Quinny to piece together a lineup. However, he never seems to stick with his lines once a game starts. That drives me on my last nerve. You have to give a combination more than 2 minutes to see uf it works. Quinn seems to have some kind of ADD when it comes to keeping a line combo together.
And I don’t want to forget this last point which I suspect all of will agree is very cogent…..ladt night absolutely SUCKED. Quinn needs to go……and take Sam and Joe with you.

If the Rangers offered Calgary DeAngelo for Bennett, Calgary would run to take it. Tony D is far too much to offer for Bennett. Everyone here seems so enamored with Bennett……..which is fine except for the fact that if Bennett cannot get on the ice with Calgary, who’s only trimly effective center is Monaghan, what does that tell you about Bennett? He is a higher priced Howden, the differences being better on face offs and a bit meaner of a game. I have thought that the Rangers needed a guy like Eakin or Nosek for awhile, however this year the cap issues limit them from making a move like that. I do think they will make a move to get a center in here…….I just do not think that happens until after this season when they are freed from cap hell.

“That’s just winning hockey,” Kreider said. “No team in the league can just throw their sticks out there and play east-west and try to skill their way to wins. You gotta go north at some point. There’s not enough space, there’s not enough time. You gotta make their D turn. You gotta make them go 200 feet. [Instead], we’re turning pucks over the lines, turning pucks over in the neutral zone, not making them dig pucks out of corners.”

So the question really is… why? Why are the best players either obstinate, stupid, or both? Valley Kat echoed my thoughts from last night – why on earth did they allow themselves to get into a track meet with a team that has no defense? I’ll give DQ blame for not callling a TO and screaming at them but honestly your best players have to be better than that.

On the D’Anger/Pepe Jr penalty fear ‘issue’ – I think you guys are seeing an issue where one does not exist. DQ did not bench D’Anger because of the penalty he took on the play, it was because of an incredibly stupid and immature second penalty of yelling at the refs and slamming the door. My memory is less certain on Pepe – was it not another too many men on the ice penalty?

From what I have seen, DQ has only taken agressive action for very lazy (ie Strome w/ slashing) or very stupid penalites. True, some players may get more rope than others but that is always the case.

As I said last night: Paging Jeff Gorton. Paging Jeff Gorton.

This is a short season. Yes, the team has injuries, but he watched the hype grow in the off season while Carp and Dave Maloney and others cautioned that we weren’t as far along as people believed. Gorton has not provided enough leadership or center depth. Add to that, there is little structure from the coach and this group has been set up to fail in the eyes of the fans and the beat writers. Gorton needs to do something.

  65. James G Avatar

    BDL,
You’re not wrong about Zibanejad but let’s take the microscope away for a minute. Gorton has designed this team so that Zibanejad HAS to be the guy. Injuries, slumps. Not allowed otherwise Strome ans Howden are 1/1A.
He’s hurt, Strome is hurt and Chytil is out injured. Gorton’s chickens have come home to roost.

As for your question-How hurt can he be? Well, Callahan once played 20+ mins a night all year with a shoulder injury. Girardi played 20 mins a night all season with a cracked patella. Both took crap for not being as effective as they would normally be. But their coaches knew that there was no filling their slot. So yeah he can actually be plenty hurt IMO.

  66. Pete Avatar
    Pete

Mess wanted to be coach and then GM of the rangers, they chose neither so don’t think he is gonna come help on faceoffs!

I don’t think Bennet would come here and work wonders, but he can win faceoffs. Issue i hear with him is that he thinks he can play top 6 and really hasn’t worked out like that thus far in his career. So he might not be happy to come here and be a bottom 6 guy either, but if he squinted hard enough he could at least envision the possibility for a top 6 role here.

On talent alone Tony is worth more for sure, which is why i suggest Calg sending us a pick back too. However, I don’t think you can discount the baggage he has associated with him (especially for a Canadian team, where he has had history from junior days) and with the expansion draft coming not sure if they would have a spot to protect him with.

The latter issue isn’t unique to Tony, which could make trading non-star guys with more than one year left (like Strome) harder this season as the GM has to have the space to keep him or expect to pay a lesser price if said player is just going to be exposed at the end of the year. At the moment there isn’t really anyone i’d be worried about losing on our end and I’d probably leave both Strome and Tony exposed as don’t think either guy would be high on Seattle’s list for different reasons

I was just trying to search for the rumors about one of the guys punching him on the way back to the locker room and found a story about how last week he got exposed by dudes on twitter when he was defending himself on twitter with a burner account.

They waived him this morning, based on that, I could believe someone punched him last night after he said something disgusting.

Noticed Fox wouldn’t pass him the puck on a PP last night

Maybe Quinn has a black eye given to him by DeAngelo after the game? Looking forward to the Zoom questions after practice. If Tony D punched out Quinn, many people here would congratulate him!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Quinn goes with seven defensemen next game. Maybe he’ll insert both bitetto and Hajek but most likely one of those will be jackass Johnson.

He was basically a spare part before having a big year thanks in part to Panarin last season.
I am not buying that he was ready to come out and be Shea Weber this season until Quinn benched him and ruined it all.

TonyD is a violtile kid. (Takes having been one to know one)

He turned a spotlight on himself on social media and people who don’t agree with him or like his attitude hate on him.

That’s been wearing on him, no doubt.

He obviously reads everything and is probably pretty dialed in to the fact he is probably not part of the long term plans

That can let a viotile kid to acting in such a way that could be such a cancer to a locker room. Or to him having his back up so much, that when criticized by a teammate reacts with emotion and physically confrontational or verbally assaulting him with any type of cutting comment tony could think of.

I totally believe something Violtile happened and it was clearly such that it’s a ‘we can’t have this kid around our team anymore’

Yzerman got rid of Tony very quickly when he was Tampa GM, can’t see him claiming him now.

all i was saying coos is that it wasn’t that hard to predict that Tony would again become a problem for yet another organization (and he was already suspended internally by the rangers for off-issues Q’s first year). Even on best behavior there were likely many teams who would never consider acquiring him given his past, which made the two year deal a risk from the start.

And his political opinions themselves were/are not the issue here (and again i’d bet many US players share those beliefs to one degree or another). But someone with his past issues in multiple organizations, would have not been so intentionally confrontational on twitter/blogs if they had truly matured and understood today’s media environment. Image is everything as Agassi said!
