Good morning, boneheads!
I hope you can try and do your best to see your moms today. If you’re lucky enough to still have your mother, that is. I lost my mom 4.5 years ago.
It’s going to be a very strange day. But everything is strange these days. I suspect there will be a lot of broken rules, and much more gatherings than we’ve seen lately. I’m not convinced Zoom will suffice for what we are celebrating today.
There are few hockey related articles that I haven’t linked to RR2. Click here to read Carp’s new article. And here for the one from a couple of days ago.
And some other mussing. Click here, and here.

interesting. I had no idea that play was possible. Definitely never seen one.
5 is possible too? (mind explode!)
Here’s a news flash, the virus is not political. It absolutely doesn’t give a good gd about the people trying to make it political. Nor will it do anything to please them or disappoint them. It will just be. You can’t market it, you can’t make it bend to your will, you will not defeat it by pretending it’s not actually happening.
But good luck trying.
4 has happened many times. I’m sure 5 has happened somewhere along the way. I have never seen it.
NY is “safe” to reopen on schedule.
https://news.yahoo.com/gov-cuomo-says-york-now-161445804.html
Norm, I am curious to know the reason behind your earlier thoughts on Snell. Is there an issue with something he said or just that he said it?
Drago, a team can strike out (or get out) an infinite number of batters in an inning.
Apparently NYC won’t see restrictions lifted until June
“In New York City on Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio said that while new hospital admissions and the percent of residents testing positive have decreased, the city of 8.3 million won’t likely see the ease in restrictions until June.
“I think it is fair to say June is when we’re going to potentially be able to make some real changes if we can continue our progress,” de Blasio said during his daily coronavirus briefing.”
In Academia, stealing from one person is called plagiarism. Stealing from more than one is called research.
A friend in NJ got this when he ordered pizza. Imagine the delivery guy gave it to you with your pizza in January lol
If I ordered pizza and someone brought a toilet paper with my pie, I would definitely not eat that pizza.
I was thinking the other day. It is highly unlikely that Jagr’s number will ever be retired. I don’t think Pen(i)s fans forgave him for leaving the team while the Pen(i)s franchise were in dire straits to go to Washington for more money…plus, I also don’t think they admire his self-center attitude (according to some). So you have 2nd best player to EVER play this awesome game and his number most likely will never get retired.
Good point, aneirin, on the virus. I would add that it doesn’t care if it’s being tested for or not. It will not be defeated, and pretending it’s all there is will only make things worse.
CCCP
I think Jagr’s jersey gets retired in Pitt.
CCCP, you realize that June is just two weeks away. I know it seems like we’ve been at this for years but in my neighborhood, places have been slowly reopening this last week (mostly restaurants coming back with takeout/delivery and people out and about) but it’s a sign of things.
Yesterday, my landlord called me for some advice on how to do remote control on his office computer (he’s in Jersey) and we wound up comparing notes on the Talmud (explaining why Jews can’t light a fire on Shabbat) and Catholic mysteries (St. Patrick and the clover leaf) and how none of them make any real sense but still have to be believed/obeyed. Well, he has to since he’s religious and I’m what they euphemistically call lapsed but what they really mean is ‘going to hell’.
Never was a big fan of Jagr. Thought he was a great number two man when he played in Pitt; but you saw how he could not carry a team when he was the go to guy;especially here in NY. Two things that show him to perfection was his not wanting to be in on the shoot-out,and also dislocating his shoulder trying to punch Scot Gomez. I have seen an awful lot of strange injuries over the years of watching hockey; but what kind of a mook can’t even throw a punch without hurting himself.
In an interest to stay on sports, I don’t know exactly what Blake Snell said. But I am on the side of the players. The multi-billionaire owners now want to further reduce players’ pay via a split of revenues. The owners are not assuming any of the health risks, the players are assuming risk to their health and career, as are many other employees and family members.

I hope the Pens retire Jaromir’s sweater. He, along with Henrik, restored the Rangers to relevance. He carried the team on his back that 54 goal season and I don’t fault him for accidentally hurting himself in the playoffs.
Snell is risking his life all right. He’s going to be attacked by a herd of medical professionals if the 35 million unemployed don’t get to him first. I mean, fine, have your agent negotiate for you behind the scenes, but talk about having no sense of the situation or being a public figure. At least he has Bryce Harper on his side now. Douche parade.
Cuomo and his Nursing Home Executive Order Of March 25, 2020 might end up killing more New Yorkers than Osama Bin Laden.
Snell is entitled to his opinion. Just like the rest of us. The one thing I take umbrage to is putting his life on the line. There are some of us out there who are actually putting it on the line. He will be playing a game making an awful lot of money. He will have the best medical personnel around him and his teammates. Is there risk? Of course.
If he’d left the life-on-the-line bullcrap out of it, there would be no story.
Isn’t Snell the crazy bitch with the heroin farm in Ozark?
BDL they got a 4th rd pick and a 5’7 forward from the AHL who was drafting in the 3rd round 4 drafts ago. That’s what they got for Georgiev.
Beezle I’m about 50 miles North of Westfield. I don’t get that kind of treatment when I get pizza. They have a good system though. I order it when I leave work, pay for it over the phone and by the time I pull up I call the girl at the counter who comes out and hands it to me, says “nice car” and back onto the highway I go.
Why is this the perfect system? Because normally I would put the pie in my back seat if I were picking it up. Now it’s in the front where (once I sanitize my hands) I can easily access a slice on the way home.
Good deal James. I like it. Can never have enough mid round draft picks. 18 year old kids who in 10 years have a chance to be 28.
James, obviously you got rid of the Jeep.
Matt Snell lived down the street from me when I was growing up. Sweet guy in those heady days.
Bdl – channeling Casey Stengel.
LMAO, affirmative, Coos. Sold it to a gentleman in need of a reliable work vehicle. Also sold him the deed to a bridge out by where ILB works…
Speaking of cars, why is it I still get creeped out when I hear Thurston Harris’ rendition of ‘little bitty pretty one’ and start looking around for a red Plymouth Fury?
I know, BDL. As long as Georgie is in another uniform ; )
Rangers will have a couple first rounders in the middle of the draft as they will probably not be in the lottery. They have other pieces to add to that (Georgiev, Andersson) if they choose. Wonder if there is any interest in, or value to moving up. Ottawa may need more prospects and might want to add to their first rounders. That is……if there is a player worth going after for the Rangers.
is Russian accent scary?
When are the Giants going to get rid of Gettleman? If/when they cut Baker they should show Gettleman the door too.
CCCP – apparently useful too
lol Beezle… see, Russian accent could save your life!
Beez, it’s a joke. The Mara’s have never given someone this much opportunity to continuously make the organization a laughingstock.
Unless you meet another Russian 😉
James the guy is an embarrassment.
When Giants players get in trouble, they go all in. Yikes. How troubled must a young man be…..a pro athlete……. to pull something like that?
TYM you know the saying you can take the boy out of the white trash but not the white trash out of the boy? There’s one for the hood too.
Baker’s four-year contract is worth $10.52 million with just over $9 million guaranteed, including a $5.675 million signing bonus.
Not only are the Giant’s draft picks dopes, they can’t play cards.
I remember Mara or some other old-guard type being prodded by a reporter to throw Belichick under the bus when Hernandez got nabbed and not taking the bait. “Yeah, we’re all fishing in the same pond,” I think was the response. I’m amazed there’s not more of these crimes–so many fabulously talented young men who have heard nothing but praise their whole time going up the recruiting ladder, no education for the most part, and sudden millions. And when a GM goes for a “character” guy, when there’s a more talented one available, he generally gets it in the neck.
Under 90 IQ – one third of a vote. The 1/3 compromise. All creeds and colors.
Apparently, the Rangers franchise celebrates 94th birthday today! Happy birthday, beloved franchise!
It’s the super-smart voters that scare me, coos. They know better, you see.
Got my bribe today. Gonna leverage it into 600 powerball tickets.
Another bad quarter for JC Penney. Goes for nickles on the dollar.
nickels
‘Let’s put a new coat of paint on this lonesome old town
Set ’em up, we’ll be knockin’ em down
You wear a mask, baby, and I’ll wear a tie
We’ll laugh at that old bloodshot moon in that burgundy sky…’
I listened to his comments. Blake Snell sounded like a fool. He could’ve been a lot more articulate. My argument is this, we don’t have all the information on the coronavirus yet. If extended exposure to the virus and an increased viral load causes more short-term and long-term health damage, imagine what would happen in any sport if one player contracted the virus? In enclosed locker rooms, dugouts, hockey benches, etc., players in close proximity for extended periods of time. We do know that corona carriers can be asymptomatic or presymptomatic and pass the virus to others. So the players could be risking their careers and lives. What are your thoughts on this, doc?
What happens if even one player suffers severe complications or death because they contracted corona due to the restart of sports?
That would be even one player that contracted a disease. Nothing you shut something down for.
Norm is ebola ok for a sports restart too?
It is evident that as long as it doesn’t affect Norm personally, he doesn’t care. We are taught by society to care only about ourselves and what impacts us directly. Some evolve beyond that message to develop empathy for others, while others such as Norm do not.
Mister D, you keep doing this. If I disagree with you on policy, I must therefore not be as virtuous. These are tough decisions, but you know that, right?
Beezle, I was unaware there was an Ebola outbreak. That one is an outright killer, not this insidious covid that takes out the elderly and comorbid, but thankfully spares the young.
Sister D. A rhinestone in the rough.
A question nobody wants to answer is, What’s your number? Thinking about the worldwide ramifications of a two-month shutdown of the major economies, the ravaging of the underclass, and the inevitable deaths piling up in the poorest among us, nobody would answer “ten” and nobody would answer “two million” (USA). Was +/- 100,000 worth it, especially considering the demographics of its victims? We’ll find out.
When are you guys going to stop torturing statistics?
Makin’ ‘em scream, coos.
Here’s one: Dortmund up 2-0 at the half.
Norm – over 45% (hypertension) of the US population has the most prevalent comorbidity (75% untreated). Up to half the hospitalizations are people under 60. You can keep on thinking it is just about great grams kicking the bucket but it isn’t. It will be some time yet before we know what the medium/long term damage is to those who were hospitalized – as well as those who were ‘not sick enough,’ young included, to be admited (and the economic damages that comes with it). The economy can re-open but hopefully not with the cavalier approach you have.
Torture!
I get up and go to work every morning for me and my family. I want to economy opened up for me and my family. I want to be able to feed my family, pay my mortgage, pay my taxes, pay for my car, and pay for my daughter to continue at college.
Does this mean I have no empathy for others? I certainly care about my neighbors. I certainly care about you people here, and how you are doing. And I certainly am not judging anybody here for wanting/believing what they want/believe should take place.
You disgust me, BDL!!!
…because of the Georgiev thing though. Not your views on the world.

I kid of course. Don’t mind me I’m just killing time instead of mowing the lawn
For anyone who wants a feel good note we have a woman who is recovering nicely From Covid in our isolation unit who turned 101 on Mother’s Day. They made a nice little celebration for her. She of course had a “just another year” attitude about it.
Hard for me to believe that anyone would like to be 101.
bdl, you haven’t suggested a cavalier approach to opening the states with a complete disregard for the safety of others. I am curious to know how a baseball season being played is so beneficial to you that it outweighs the serious health risks imposed upon the players and staff?
I don’t think baseball should play Mister D. The way there season plays out the smartest thing for them to do is S can the season. Spring training starts in February. By then we will have a much better handle on this, and baseball should be able to have a full season next year. I also do not think the NHL, or NBA should play. Though I do applaud their try every thing possible before we give up attitude. Football is the only one who I think should try to play. They have more time to see what’s what.
Both the NHL and NBA could aim for a normal start time for next season, and push back till January to start if needed. It buys them time. I understand there is a ton of money at stake, not just for owners and players, but for advertisers and the people that sell it. Plus production crews, PBP announcers, vendors and so on, but I think aiming for a full season is the way to go.
Having said that, I think they are all going play at some point in the summer. I hope they all succeed. We could use some success.
Germany is playing soccer. Now. Are they morons?
Norm,
I’m coming at the sports thing more as a fan. I don’t particularly want see some watered down versions of American sports. I have zero interest in the Stanley Cup being handed out in August via some made up playoff format. Same for baseball, a game I love. I rather edit it out and get the real thing. I have no doubt that if the leagues do play this summer they will use every piece of information they have, and will have the players take the field at minimal risk. For me it’s more a purist view.
edit = wait.
Beezle, that was a long-winded way of agreeing that this little demon is killing the elderly and comorbid, but thankfully sparing the young. And there is nothing cavalier about trying to get the economy up and running as quickly as possible with the understanding that there is risk involved. I’m a bit surprised at the reluctance until quite recently to look at the other side of the coin. An extended lockdown–and thank God folks are putting an end to it from the ground up–would be unconscionable. It’s been destructive enough. As to the pols, here’s to Kemp DeSantis, Polis and Abbott for doing what they could to lead the way.
Fair enough, BDL. I’d rather see them play even if it’s only on TV. My purity is about the skill of the athlete–I watch with the sound off quite often as my wife does not share that purity, and then there are those announcers…
Antarctica has no virus. But no delis.
Norm,
I have said that I will not watch if the NHL comes back this summer. James then called me a liar. And I must confess, I stumbled upon the Korean baseball league the other day, and I watched for two innings. The baseball was eh, but it was baseball.
