Good morning, boneheads!
We wake up every morning with a full calendar of things to do. Some important, some urgent. Some just plain silly. We enjoy some, we hate some. Daily routine. Let’s not forget that it’s all possible because of some brave, selfless people, who spent large parts of their lives making sure we can safely go about our daily routine. We are honored to have some of them on our blog, and we are honored they are a part of our small family. Thank you for all you have done for us and our loved ones!
Happy Veterans Day!

Where is everyone?
Looks like Don Cherry stuck Michael Jordan size foot in his mouth. Again.
Yes, thank you Veterans for everything you have done for our country!
Not sure I disagree with Don. Fck sensitivity.
Lias Andersson pick could turn out to be worse than Jessiman.
Don meant you, too.
I love and respect the country I live in dearly.
Don doesn’t think so, CCCP. He bunched all immigrants in one pile, including you, me, and every non-Canadian in downtown Toronto.
I am not offended.
I know who I am 🙂
Thanks to all my Veteran brothers and Sister true American Hero’s!
Not the first time he resorts to xenophobia. I respect him for many things, including how he honors veterans and fallen soldiers. But his attempts to be entertaining sometimes end up on the wrong side. More often lately. Maybe it’s time?
That is sometimes the problem with people of an advanced age. They think living as long as they have gives them some kind of entitlement in regards to being rude, racist, stereotypical, obnoxious and down right mean.
Atta boy, C3!
James I think often it is as much that ‘times have changed’ and lets be honest, people today are marshmallow soft when it comes to butt hurt feelings.
As for the Rangers and their ‘losing often’…Take a breath take a step back and rub your eyes. They are everything we basically anticipated them being.
– 7-8 record
-occasional sick skill
-atrocious defense on many a night
-capable of winning/losing high scoring games that are wide open
-occasionally surprising a good team
-occasionally losing ugly or pulling one out.
– good and bad flashes from some very talented kids
-some vets doing their jobs and some looking old
Isn’t that what we knew they’d be? In a sense, it’s kind of silly to dissect every player’s performance and every game’s outcome when we sort of already knew that these would be the things contributing to their overall performance/record.
So stuff it, Bret. Or I’ll send Dan Boyle after you! : D
Well that’s a whole other hallway I don’t want to walk down at the moment, Beezle. I don’t have enough Monday morning coffee in me to start in about sensitivity and everyone gets a trophy talk.
I just know that when I go to a nice restaurant with my father I will cringe at least twice by the time coffee is served as a result of things he says to our server. lol
If what he said is controversial, then we are lost as a generation.
agreed.
DairyQueen on Lindgren “He’s very decisive in what he does. He’s really come on in the last six months.” The anti-SkjeL?
Agree. Let’s close this topic. But I looked Cherry up and, ironically, found this:
“His maternal grandfather, Richard Palamountain, was a British orphan of Cornish parentage who was emigrated to Canada as one of the Home Children.”
So Mcdavid recorded his 400th point last night at age 23. This is is 5th NHL season. Pretty incredible
Gretzky at age 23 was going into his 5th season with 709 NHL career points and would rack up another 205 in the 74 games he played that year.
Guess you could say he was pretty okay at hockey that #99…
Beezle, Did you see the game/post game? Valiquette made some comment about Skjei and how he’s still learning not to do things like blow his coverage on the Dadanov goal.
While I understand the context he meant it in, I just think that says a lot about the progression or lack their of for this player
Gretzky wasn’t great at board battles. 🙂
Don is a son of an immigrant who wears poppies 😉
Big difference.
Running around again today, so some quick takes:
1. Lindgren has been much better than I expected. It’s still a small sample size (like Hajek’s from last year), but it has been extremely encouraging.
2. Buchnevich has been sneaky good this season, offensively. His defensive game still needs a lot of work, though.
3. I think Kakko is starting to round a corner.
4. There are some things that Strome does well, but I still think those things are outweighed by his negative play at 5 v 5 and his very poor penalty differential.
5. I still love Brian Boyle.
First of all, thanks Ilb, nice sentiment.
Thanks to all my fellow vets out there, both bonehead and non-bonehead.
Big thank you to all of those still standing a post out there and in harms way down range.
Forgot to mention that Strome cannot be our icetime leader among forwards.
Oh, and one last thing: I doubt it will happen, but I’m really hoping that this is the end of Don Cherry.
Everyone have an introspective and appreciative day.
A week or so ago someone suggested Kakko on top line. I’m starting to come over to that idea with his recent play. However, I would leave Strome as center when Zib comes back, putting him with kid K again. THE needs something to get him moving again, maybe thats it and Stome seems to be working very well with Breadman. The Legend, of course, moves down as does Howden. As to Lisa, put him out on the wing.
RR2 – definitely don’t want the guy with more than a point a game as one of our TOI leaders.
Doodie doesn’t want Strome getting top ice minutes because Doodie doesn’t want Strome to score more than 15 goals or whatever so Doodie can be right.
Of players with at least 9 games (here’s looking at you Zib): P/GP Mika #11, Breadman #13, Unsustainable #19. In the East, #8, 9 and 13.
James,
As far as cringing with things said by parents. I’m there with you. I have a funny story of something my mother said, but I think I would need permission from the boss here to share it.
Well said, ilb.
I believe it, BDL. Feel free to email it to me lol
As far as Strome- I stand by what I’ve said from the beginning. I don’t think the bad outweighs the good in reality. We can talk til we are blue in the face about what things say on paper (or on a computer screen). The guy is a point per game player right now and one of the best faceoff guys on the roster. Plenty left to be desired with a fair amount of “good players” around the league IMHO
Liking what I see lately from Chytil, Kakko, Lindgren.
Also on Strome-Even if/when his production slows down he’s probably going to finish the year somewhere around 22-33-55. You could have only hoped that Kevin Hayes would deliver you that many points had they retained him.
He’ll finish in the top 4-5 in scoring on this roster. Hard to justify removing or limiting him.
Much respect to all the Vets out there. Thank you!!!!
“We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us.”
― Winston S. Churchill
This whole Zibenajad thing is getting ridiculous.
Thank you Veterans for all the sacrifices you have made
I just watched the Cherry broadcast.
The reaction/uproar is overblown
He shouldn’t have said “you people” I took it as him meaning everyone who doesn’t wear a poppy and support the vets in a demonstrable way.
What a bunch of pansies getting offended. And I’m glad Cherry is sticking to his comments because that’s the credible and honest thing to do. Not make a fake apology for something you believe and be insincere about it. He knows he’s 85. He shouldn’t cow tow to producers and social media morons. If they can him…he could give a 💩
When I googled Cherry because of the story mentioned here I was expecting much worse. Not just a rant at respecting those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to allow for such a wonderful way of life that many enjoy. Sheesh
Next time the Rangers see Bergeron, someone needs to fight him. Even if he’s not a willing participant.
Not sure Strome’s penalty differential is all that accurate. That second call yesterday was horse poop. Total phantom hook/slash or whatever was called. I’m sure there have been other egregious calls against him as well. If he’s going to get whistled for breathing there’s not much you can do….
You can’t rehab a concussion, Scottsdale.
Agree 100%, BDL. It should have happened that night. If this was the 1980s, Pasternak would have been spitting out teeth within an hour of that hit.
“Let us go forward together”
Winston Churchill
Merle!!!! Such a great name
CCCP
I’m sure if you were in Canada you’d proudly buy and wear a poppy to show your support for the military and vets. So in my opinion Cherry would not be talking about you.
ILB
well said about the meaning of veterans day. they deserve our thanks and the support of all.
Does anyone think Bergeron and company had Mika marked for the same hit lias gave beregeon last year?
Cuz I do.
Thatnmakes it premeditated. But I guess only Bergeron knows that
Blatant intent to injure and not even 2 minutes. Wacky League.
James, my problem is that the team has been very dishonest. Kind of Met-like if you ask me.
Oh, and why is it only the Rangers who suffer injuries like this and almost never the isles?
“You people love — you, that come here, whatever it is — you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life, that you enjoy in Canada. ”
It’s HIS milk and honey. Not THEIRS.
Bet you some of those “people” gave more to Canada already than he ever had. Or will. Defend this all you want. Xenophobic redneck.
Scottsdale- I get it. But all teams do that. UBI, Neck, LBI, leg…it is what it is.
As for the Isles, They may never lose a game again. 🙂
No Crosby tomorrow.
Cherry is a senile old malcontent. Years ago, he was just a young malcontent. Why even publicize him?
I know not everyone is in agreement with my point of view on this but it’s not like the Rangers are competing or jockeying for a playoff spot or in a race for home ice advantage etc.
Zibanejad is continuing to heal while Chytil is getting more NHL experience and other kids step up to try to provide some offense. It’s unfortunate that our #1 center is hurt but having him healthy beyond this season is what’s important. Not having a better record than the Islanders in 2019.
What’s Zib’s injury? Top Secret Crypto.
C3 there’s a honey joke to be made with the Cherry comments I’m just too lazy to figure it out.
poppy status?
James, your father wouldn’t look out of place in my neck of the woods.
He definitely is xenophobic
An apology from him would be insincere and a waste of everyone’s time.
The uproar just seems over the top. He’s said senile crap so many times.
It’s like Trump’s antics. I stopped paying attention.
That may be the wrong thing as an argument can be made that silence empowers the wrong people. But I’m much more sane when I stop giving a crap about morons.
I root for the rangers, therefore I love immigrants obviously.
After I posted my comment I read Sean Macadoe response from a couple hours ago and it made me think a little more on it.
A hearty THANK YOU to all the veterans out there, especially the boneheaded ones…..except Wicky.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why we are even debating Strome at current salary /cap hit is a bit ridiculous at this point
Cregg, the comments on that article are eye-opening as well.
Agreed
I’m a Vet and I respect Vets but not interested in walking out of every CVS in North America being hawked by some guy in a VFW hat asking for cash.
Kooz – they take checks and credit cards too…
Don Cherry dresses like a queen.
If anyone knows how to get in touch with Carp personally, let me know. It’s the first time he’s coming down here in the 12 1/2 years I’ve lived down here. His direct messages aren’t open on Twitter.
Which is more than understandable 🤣
“Buy a poppy, you ingrates,” would be an entirely unobjectionable exhortation on behalf of Canada’s vets, from a crusty old son of a Mountie. Which Cherry is, and which is the essence of what he said, in a country where free speech is still a thing.
Word is starting to trickle out that he’s been fired.
I’m guessing they gave him a bunch of chances to apologize, he refused, and so they had to fire him in the face of the tremendous backlash they’ve been receiving.
Cherry is financing his own Pro League.
Sportsnet popped the Cherry.
https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1877544
Thank You to all our veterans, and especially veterans who are also boneheads. As for Don Cherry, he used to be entertaining, but long ago. I guess I am surprised that the PM got a pass up there and Cherry did not Cancel culture being what it is, but I won’t miss him. They should but another belligerent guy with opinions, Brian Burke in that chair, and keep it about hockey. Cherry was not very much about hockey over the past few years, sadly.
We don’t have to agree with the old goat, but he should have a right to say what he thinks.
Yeah I guess it was the “you people”… everyone knows he shoulda said “you PEOPLEKIND!”. How DARE he?
He can just do his own podcast or Sirius SM station if he were motivated to stay on the air
Like Howard Stern or any other famous shock jock
Really upset about Cherry getting the can. People wonder why Trump won? This is one good example of over the top PC reaction. And I didn’t even vote for the orange jerk. MSG should hire immediately!
Isn’t “redneck” a derogatory term? 🙂
I think redneck is an endearing term for me. Helps me remember my past whilst i toil in a white collar world wishing my wife would let me get a ATV and a pickup truck. Allows me to relate to many of my patient population, a few staff. My redneck past was awesome. I don’t get enough exposure now.
They eventually come for everybody. Those of us old enough to remember Howard Cosell getting the axe can tell you that.
Reminds me of Adam Sandler in Anger Management…talking to the airline people:
“what is it with you people?”
“YOU PEOPLE?!”
cregg7 why can’t you have a 1/2 ton? Lots of people in the city/burbs have non-working trucks, why not you?
They can fire him, of course–that’s another freedom. But Cherry is well out of a place that is so cowardly as to actually do it. The guy’s a hockey clown who will be missed by few, but my respect for him just went up a big notch for his refusal to apologize for supporting those who put themselves in harm’s way for their country.
Exactly Beeze!!!!!
I’ve started to nudge the issue for my “big” birthday next year. Instead of a party.
May be perfect timing. The new chevy and new Ram seem to have significant transmission and reliability complaints. Maybe they work those kinks out for the next iteration. Leaning ford which is more end of design cycle but not sure yet.
Ev
And you’re welcome too
Storm in a glass of water…Preposterous.
Cregg other than an issue last winter with frozen door latch my f-150 has been great (2018 V8). Actually glad I never got a cover for the bed, there is always something (dirt, junk, trash) back there and it held up well to plowing my driveway last winter (600′). Highway it drives like a car and has an ungodly amount of acceleration for something so heavy.
James
What do you mean you people?
Wasn’t that tropic thunder?
Iirc, cherry also refused to apologize about knocking other nations for not supporting the USA in Iraq
I’ve got my take on cherry and his recent comments, but don’t have the time to post them now
Thanks for the good review Beeze
My brother has a 2016 f150 and it tows his boat like a dream. He lives too far away from me to borrow when needed though.
May have to be a copy cat
I would get the spray in liner to keep things protected and just throw whatever back there without worry about scraping up. (I read owners love Line-x even more than factory spray in) Tonaue cover seems convenient to protect luggage/gear on a family trip.
My big sell is that her parents and brother live close and neither have a truck. So it will be convenient and beneficial to the whole family of one of us has one.
“That couch won’t move itself will it? 🛋”
The 4 wheeler will be the hardest thing to not get vetoed on. 😉
I might be getting in hot water here….but there is absolutly nothing wrong with what Don Cherry said. Period.
Rich in Hagerstown by way of Brooklyn
Men in skirts disagree.
3CP…yes they do. Ughhh
Cherry has been anti-immigrant for decades, so this latest barb should come as no surprise and well past the time he should have been fired.
Rich, he chose to single out immigrants when we all know there are of course plenty of natural born Canadian citizens who don’t wear a poppy as is their choice in a free society. He could have handled this one with a respectful ask that all Canadians (regardless of where you were born) wear a poppy in support of Canada’s troops. Instead he went the route he did and was rightfully fired in my opinion (as he was doing so as an employee, not a private citizen).
I’m a man in skirt. It wasn’t what he said to support the veterans, is what he said about immigrants as a group in terms that “they” do not support the veterans. As opposed to everyone else does? But immigrants? They don’t care about veterans, but they liked “our” milk and honey. I don’t want him to be canned either, but he should’ve clarified it. And if he really thinks that all immigrants that are in NA are parasites who do not appreciate what North Americans have done here, then she should be out of the National TV. Pure garbage. I’m done with this topic.
I’ve got a poppy, right here….
Are those poppys responsible for the opium wars?
Cregg – I got Line-X done at an installer near Norm’s old stomping grounds (interesting owner). Stuff is awesome. Had a dozen cinder blocks in there last week, shoved them back and forth with no worries. Just remember, it *is* forever. Some crazy Jeepers even do the whole exterior with it.
ilb, my guess is they gave him ample opportunity to clarify it and walk it back and he refused.
Cherry is a flamboyant idiot and his comments are fully consistent with his being.
Still, he should not have been fired over this.
Am I overly sensitive because my late father was an immigrant? Seven years of service, including four during WW II. Smack in the middle of it, finished in Dresden. Many scares, absent toe, troubles hearing in one ear. His memory faded last year and a half or so, but all he remembered was the war. He appreciated every veteran who ever served for a country. Cherry just bunched him up too. I’m sure there are millions more of “them”
Uh oh, I think I pissed off Ilb… no more pool parties for me! 😀
I kid I kid.
Just to be clear, I did not mean you (Ilb) specifically when I said “men in skirts”…I was saying in general. We live in sh*ty PC times.
Nah, CCCP. I don’t get peed off easily. I’m not happy that I have to sit all day tomorrow in the “important” corporation meeting, and we were told to turn our phones off so no one can reach us all day, lol.
Cherry is as polarizing figure as there is. I remember him talking about a fallen soldiers a few years back, and he couldn’t hold his tears back. Guess what, neither could I. But then he goes into some nationalistic or xenophobic rant. I respect him for standing his ground, and he is allowed to say what his believes are. But not in front of millions of people who know he is wrong.
Fair enough.
Does anyone remember the “neck” injury sustained by Crosby that turned out to be another concussion? Something tells me Zibanejad is entering the same territory.
Cheers 🍻 ILB
Well said brother.
My dad a Vietnam Vet. Didn’t serve as long as your dad but certainly has some tears to share when he lets his guard down.
Speaking of pool parties
Is puljujarvi a ranger yet?
Something tells Holland isn’t Chiarelli. He probably wants Kreider, Andersson and a first for him. 😃
ilb, it was the other way around. They thought he had another concussion that wasn’t going away but it was actually a neck injury.
Oh, maybe you’re right. I remember him being out very long.
I guess it could be a nasty Whiplash/ligamentous type injury which can take a couple weeks or more and good to be cautious with
Want him 100% with no reason to play feeling timid.
Speaking of a Corp meeting tomorrow. I won’t be able to open the website until late afternoon. Watch for shenanigans, will you?
I think I will remain one of the worker bees so I don’t have to go to the type of meetings ILB is tasked to attend.
I doubt that Cherry was completely wrong–I’d need to have walked around Toronto myself to know. He was incoherent, as ever, but to note that people are unrespectful of the idea that their freedoms have been fought for, and repeatedly, is merely to observe the world around you. And to be annoyed on behalf of a veteran who didn’t understand why (Cherry) was thinking about not running a poppy spot makes perfect sense to me. Watching the un-excerpted video, you see Cherry being Cherry. Reading the excerpted quote, you see something else entirely and fill it up with what you please. Today my colleagues and I have been educating young people about the idea of Veteran’s Day, and the dangers of forgetting how this American miracle came to pass, how it constantly needs fighting for, how people elsewhere in the world, for instance, fight and die for the right to vote that we take for granted, and so on. They don’t all get it, yet.
I resisted this for years, Cregg. Until I couldn’t. I still stood my ground, and kept the clinical part that I wanted most.
Grapes didn’t go full Jimmy the Greek or Al Campanis, but, sometimes when you’re past your sell by date they are looking for a way to change things up and he gave them an easy way to do it. Also Pre-Trump it would have passed quickly, but, now everyone feels obliged to prove that they are not as big an A-hole as him and this is a cheap and easy way to polish up you immigration bona fides.
Extremely bothered by someone being smugly vilified and fired that begin with: “My guess is…”
(bothered by comments that begin with that nonchalant phrase.
Cherry has always been a blowhard and a publicity seeker. Don’t vote for him, but let him have his say.
coos, I don’t think it takes being smug to villify him. His own words and history of conduct are more than enough for that.
And my guess is based upon Sportsnet’s recent reactions under their TV rights deal, such as panicking into firing George Strombolopolous to bring back Ron Maclean to host HNIC after basically less than a season.
Zibby has always come back from injury and played with semi-abandon. Hope that the accumulation of slams doesn’t make him go shy.
Hey did you guys hear about what Don Cherry said yesterday?
I say it’s time to jump the shark
I’m marginally bothered by comments that begin with “Extremely bothered”.
And I think all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired.
I like seeing ILB’s fire. Cherry is a moron. Sad part is he will have a faction of people who give him a little tap and say way to go for standing by ‘our’ ideals and in the small circle he will keep this will actually be a medal and the sword he fell on, in his circle he will be glorified for it.
The president of Sportsnet said him that after talking to cherry after the incident happened it was decided that he would be leaving immediately . Cherry basically said ‘F that I’m not apologizing, that’s exactly what I meant’and that was it.
*Himself
But, any company which pays one handsomely to be a spokesperson or a direct representative of them to the public has the ultimate right to fire each and every one of them who chooses to publicly insult half their customers. Stands to reason.
Cherry responds: “I only publicly insulted 43% of their customers.”
Cherry did not just single out immigrants. He did clearly mention them. The reason I am on this is because I come from a military family. Two Revolutionary war ancestors. Five Civil War ancestors. A great uncle in WW I. A cousin and great uncle in WWII. My father 1st marine division Choisin reservoir..Korean war. Mh Uncle USMC 3 tours in Vietnam.
So once again I understend Cherries frustration.
Having said all that….he could gave been a little more circumspect in his speech….it’s just not in his nature. If I remember correctly he used to freely insult Sweedish hockey players all the time. It’ who he is. He is a bull in a china shop.🐃 I will now shut up about it…..to everyones great relief.
I’m not one to freak out easily I’ve been a Ranger fan for a long time. But this Zibanejad injury is beginning to worry me. It will be a tough pill to swallow if we are losing our # 1 C & accomplished DJ for an extended period of time ugh!
FWIW, I saw it live, didn’t think he singled out all immigrants (and that’s not the way I took what he said at all).
I took it as he was referring to those who wouldn’t buy a poppy for a looney or tooney, but yet we’re more than happy to enjoy Starbucks $7 coffees, iPhones etc.
Enjoying the benefits of “freedom isn’t free” or the “creature comforts bought and paid for by the blood of others”.
My family is as much immigrants as anyone else’s, and I didn’t take offence at it and personally, i just kind of let it go as babbling monkey chatter.
The worst part is by me saying I wasn’t offended, all the hyper sensitive folks out there start making it this huge ordeal and now I’m seemingly put on the side of defending his comment because I wasn’t offended.
I remember the phrase “sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me”
Where the hell did we go wrong as a species from that?
I mean if don cherry (or anyone else) is on a Toronto street corner yelling racial epithets and getting in the face and physically threatening immigrants or any specific group, then hell yes, run his ass up the flag pole, fire him, whatever needs to be done. I’m 100% against anything like that, I’ll grab my pitchfork and torch and lead the mob myself.
But some of the crap people get offended by or up in arms about..I mean come on, must be rough to have a life where getting chirped (so to speak) is the most devastating thing that can happen to you.
Get a grip people.
St Pete broke the blog
Still going?
I just realized something. Don Cherry? I don’t give a carcillo 😃
I’m out until late afternoon tomorrow. Go Time at 7 pm. It’s on NBCSN too. Ugh…
Ilb
Exactly re cherry
Well said, Wicky.
… and somehow Trump got blamed for this. Sigh.
He did?
Yeah, here on RR2. Read some of the posts above.
Just read them all, again, CCCP. Nobody blamed Trump. If anything, the opposite.
Fake News!
I blame Zibanejad and his “neck” injury
Where is that CraigWeather guy? Once again fakeforecasts – all the snow headed to Montreal and not my driveway! Plowed it anyway just in case 🙂
Minx I think the team could get in trouble if DJ has a headbanger and they aren’t reporting it. Can be dodgy about anything else but with the lawsuits and what not they want to count and monitor the head stuff. Could be vertebrae involved too so extra caution.
If it were up to Cherry only Canadians would be allowed to play NHL hockey. And NO French Canadians! Obvious for over 40 years.
ilb – “somebody wake me up if displeasantry breaks out in the wee hours.” 🙂
What’s a displeasantry?
Get rid of Steve mills.
I can only imagine the type of black supremacy talk that goes on within his circles.
Steve mills is a politician who got in sports instead. He has been at the helm of a major decision maker the entire team the Knicks have been this bad. I mean he brought in Michelle obama’s Brother who has very very if any NBA experience into the organization in a very prominent head of development position.
Steve mills has hijacked the Knicks as his own personal Means to making himself and probably his kids powerplayers. And that’s why our world is in the shape it’s in. Bc powerplayers only care about gaining power and control and they don’t care what they have to do to achieve it
Truth must be punished.
Time we live in.
Dolan just get over it and bring in the van gundys (let them hire mark Jackson as team if they want) and let them run the team for 15 years. I guarantee by year 3: basketball is about basketball again and the Knicks are competitive
Coach not team
Don cherry is talking to EVERYONE who is not what he quote on quote considers real Canadiens. Should we all be offended?
Whenever my girlfriends mom was complain about her (haha), my girlfriend always reminded me to
‘Consider the source’
Enough about Cherry. Back to business. Strome shooting % down to 20.6%.
SELL! SELL!SELL!!!!
He stinks at D, James, and his goals and assists are just puck luck.
On to Lindgren.
He stinks too. Call up Rykov, even on one leg he’s better than Lindgren.
Andersson, Howden, Chytil, Hajek, Lindgren, Kakko, and Fox all busts. Fire everybody! Should have hired Trotz! There I said it 😎
Putting aside the Chart Boys irrational hatred of Strome, it is a legitimate question as to what to do with him going forward. Is he a core guy going forward?, or a chip to trade away for futures?
James,
I’m not saying this to tweak you, but with Zibanejad injury history, isn’t it wise to keep someone like Strome who can fill in so well. How ugly would this season be right now if it wasn’t for Strome filling in so well as the number one center (Chytil too)?
Is Strome worth more as a Ranger than in the trade market? Realistically what could they expect back n return for him? A second rounder on the high side? Of course the contract it would take to keep him has to be considered. One option, since he is an RFA, and not a UFA after the season, is to go one more year. Make him do it again.
No, I wouldn’t argue that. I think Strome could make it tougher decision than most here think it’ll be. What do you do with a 26 year old center/wing headed to last year of RFA if he puts up 20-25 goals and 55-60 points?
Say what you will of any player in this league about their 5 on 5 play or any shortcomings they may have in their game. If you produce like that in this league you have serious value.
The go to argument will be ‘oh look at his linemates’ followed by dissecting a bunch of different situational stats.
Here’s the stat I favor- when a guy is in his mid 20s and is a top 5 scorer on your roster you don’t cut bait because you want a ‘different kind of player’
How good has Chytil been. Those of us with clear eyes knew Chytil needed to go to Hartford to play and learn. I would have left him there for at least a half season, and I would have been wrong to do so. He is a completely different player. The only knock I have on him right now is I’d like him to a better job of staying on his skates. Some of that is needing to get a little stronger on his skates, and some of it is he tries to do everything at a very fast pace.
And don’t get me wrong- would I replace him with an elite center? sure. but would I trade him and then give RNH 7×7? Nope. Nor would I rush Chytil or Andersson into his spot with hope that they’ll find a way to give them that type of production.
The look at his linemates point just tells you he is fully capable of centering top line players. Not every center is capable of that.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Chytil was playing first line RW for a spell once Zibanejad is back. Essentially he could provide what we thought Kravtsov would as a top 6 wing
I think they are in the process of moving on from Andersson. It would not shock me if he is sent down very soon, followed by a trade. Quinn does not seem to be a fan of Andersson, and if the coach isn’t going to use him, trade him for somebody he would use.
James,
I think the move is going to be Strome to the RW, where he will play with Zibanejad, and Panarin.
Bdl
I think your right on Andersson he will probably get trade and blossom into a pretty darn good hockey player.
Sauer Update?
NJ weather just as soft as Kevin Hayes “Conditions remain frigid on a sunny Wednesday with highs only in the low to mid 30s and wind chill values making it feel even colder” Lucky if Wicky is running around in more than his shorts at those temps!
Sign strome then decide if he will be a trade chip as rental next year or if you want to extend him. He deserves to play. May have some money in a couple years as long as term isn’t too long.
Paul Newman: “Consider the sauce.”
Funny thing about Cherry canadadianism is some of his best work in the world of Hockey was when he lived in Rochester and played for and coached the AMERICANS to championship.
Also at the time Worked on the side and sold Cadillacs
BDL,
Considering the way that Quinn has managed his younger players, I would be beyond shocked if he were to move Strome to the wing in favor of Chytil at center. I don’t even think he would do that if Strome weren’t producing at a point per game right now which he is…
way too soon to trade Andersson…….just thinking there were probably a lot of similar comments about Strome (high draft pick that struggled) first 2 seasons also and he figured it out
Andersson 7th overall. Seems like a hardworking, respectful kid but it’s make it or break it time.
It’s weird that even when I think Anderson is doing better than Howden he gets half the ice time. But what the hell do I know.
I think Quinn likes howdens demeanor and ability to talk North American.
Lias had a great camp. Worked his butt off in the offseason. Is way better than last year. Yet he gets the short end of stick.
make or break time…he just turned 21 Coos ..if anything just send him down to work on his game
As far as Andersson goes I think it goes back to the argument about how a team cannot be all skill.
I think we may have overestimated the size of his role this season. I think most will do quite a bit of overestimating because ‘he was the 7th overall pick’.
With that said, I think the only “untouchables” as far as the yoots go are probably Kakko and Fox as far as the organization is concerned.
Howden is the same as last year. Very little noticeable progression. Needs 15 lbs of muscle. And needs to play with an edge that we’ve never seen out of him. His junior days he was bigger and better than the young kids. But hasn’t translated into NHL.
Hartford for Howden for a year or two. Get him some offensive confidence. Make him earn his roster spot for crying out loud.
Meritocracy my as. S
If only the world of hockey was as simple as “well, the coach isn’t giving him more minutes or bumping him up to a top six role so he probably doesn’t like him and thus he will get traded”…..
They tried that, bobbyo…
The longer Howden goes at his current level of play the more you realize why Quinn is getting him used to a role as a third liner.
If you can help him, Q will play you. Simple as that.
Howden and Andersson are getting roughly the same amount of ice time. Quinn seems to trust Howden more. Thus they’re where they are.
Given the way Strome is playing and the production they’ve gotten out of Chytil, they really don’t have a justifiable reason to start moving Strome to wing, bumping Andersson to 2C or anything that could be considered a bold move.
Even if we don’t see it that way, I think the ice cream coach does
I don’t give a carp 💩 about where Lias was drafted.
Play him and see what you get. I think his inner drive. His willingness to get to the dirty areas and his physicality which will improve as he gets older and stronger will make him a fine third line center. Stop stapling him to the bench. I don’t even think he needs Hartford. He needs playing time and coaching and the weight room and natural aging. It’s one of the most annoying things Quinn has done in my eyes. The way he’s handled Lias v Howden.
Chytil is a totally different case and I think is proving he is untouchable until we know his true worth and ceiling.
The problem is that some players help you out the door, Coos.
Don’t let JD’s size 15 boot hit you in the tooshy on your way out.
Cregg, I agree with you. Highly doubt they’re pulling the old “we don’t like you” trade. Although it worked out brilliantly when they did it to Spooner.
Bobbyo,
I always think Adan Graves, when I look to compare guys with similar starts to their careers. For example, Graves,
Detroit, 78 games, 7 goals, 7 assists.
Edmonton, 139 games, 16 goals, 3o assists.
Then Graves became Graves with the Rangers. He also was a center when he first came up, and moved to the LW late on. I mention that because I think Anderssonsga s is best suited for the wing.
Anderssons game is best suited for the wing.
My lines.
Panerin Mika Strome (Strome seems to have chemistry now with panerin, and we know Mika has it too)
Kreider Chytil Buch
Lemieux Lias Kaako
Smith Howden Fast
You could flip flop Buch and Kaako and see how it goes. But I think I like lemiuex ability to distract players away from kaako right now and his more willingness to drill anyone that touches the kid.
Good stuff BDL…. maybe best on wing but the fact he’s a center is another reason not to give up on him
BdL. 100% agree. I think we’ve both made the comparable to Gravey with Lias. Similar size, similar draft pick, similar fire in their belly.
He only just turned 21 a month ago!!
Carp kinda defending him not playing much this year. Which is 180 degrees of carp defending him being called a bust last year. Maybe it’s just preaching patience and process.
I Can’t wait to see the kid at 23 yo, but we have to get there.
I am usually mr positivity
But sheesh. Howden will be 22 in March and has more NHL minutes under his belt. His window to prove himself is going to start closing before he knows it. He needs to show an upward trajectory. Maybe he does more than Lias right now but his trajectory has flatlined in my eyes. Maybe a demotion reinvigorates him.
Replacement found.

If/when Mika returns give this a spin:
Panerin Strome Kakko
Kreider Mika Buch
Lemieux DonC Lisa
Smith Howden Fast
Beezle hates McKegg..
WHERE THE HELL IS SN?
I’d guess Lias gets sent down when Z-bad is back.
That’d be my guess too Doodie.
I’ll be disappointed if you two goofs are right, but the fact remains it’s a long season and I’d be pretty shocked – as I think you would both be- if Chytil didn’t plateau or regress at some point or an injury didn’t occur again.
Read: If he does go down it won’t be for long..
I dunno guys.
I hate saying it publicly but I think I’ve shown I’m the proactive type. I think it’s time to trade andersson. He really belongs on someone 3rd line with two capable advantage type 3rd liners and I see him on the wing for awhile, I think he can play pepe’s Role for someone else and get PK time and be a pesk/pita and with time hopefully blossoms into an all Around 3rd line center.
I know howden haven’t put it together yet, but much more an NHL center right now than andersson. I just saw it in andersson at the game I was at. He feels out of place in the middle and he gets lost in the game as a 4th line center bc he can’t drive or direct play yet. But you look at the wing depth chart and you got pepe/kakko on the 3rd, Kreids/buch on 2nd, panarin and for now fast for the defensive/do the little things presence, there’s no room for andersson now and there’s more wingers coming.
Plus bc of his draft position, he’s just never gonna get a fair shake here man, he’s always gonna have pressure to live up to it, and then if he doesn’t, even if he becomes a real nice little player, he still will be a whipping boy.
I would move him for pool party, straight up. Honestly I think both players have similar careers production wise, think they end up playing on the same 3rd line primarily. For the rangers, having kakko and giving him another Finn in the locker room and the prospect that Kreider is leaving, we could use someone who could also be used on a 2nd PP unit as net front presence. Both 3rd liners, 15-20g, 15-20a production, andersson gives you PK, pool party hopefully eventually gives you some PP time.
But the notion of adding to pool party is ridiculous. He’s gonna end up a ranger or stay in Finland for years and the oilers need help now. From Holland’s POV, if he believes in andersson, and it seems he sees the same qualities and intangibles we do, I’d be thinking if I give andersson a good 12 minutes a night on the wing with my 3rd line, he’s gonna get used to it and then be an energy PITA PK guy for me in March of this season onward, and I need that cost controlled for years as much as anything with the big dogs I already got
Whoa. Didn’t know that got so long
I don’t know how people can be talking about trading Andersson when you’re selling about as low as you can sell, but not talking about trading Strome, when you would be selling about as high as you can sell.
Oh good. The “trade everyone” hour has arrived.
Trading Anderson without a full season of NHL work who was 20 years old just 1 month ago who HS proven time be a hard worker and has shown clear improvement year to year would be just about the dumbest move we could make. (Unless it’s for a Haul…which it wouldn’t be….)
(Has proven to be)
Wasn’t Doug Weight 21 when we traded him? That worked out well…Guy never amounted to more than a 3C…
Doodie, is your worst nightmare that Strome has like a 65 point season and then they sign him to a one year deal he does it again and they retain him long term?
I want my worst nightmare regarding this team to be that they decide to keep a highly productive center lol
My actual worst nightmare involves spiders….and old woman ghosts…..:::looks around::::
Be a contrarian. Buy high, sell low.
Sell 30 April at 142!!!!!!!!!!!
Be a Ranger fan and just SELL before the other shoe drops!!
James G, they got Tikkanen for him and we won a Cup, so it worked out OK.
so many variables, we can’t say Tikkanen was the reason we won, or that we could not have won without him.
could they have won more had they not made that trade?
Winning solves all problems so water under bridge.
cregg, yes, I know there were possibilities for more, and if we hadn’t gone 54 years without one, I’d probably be a bit more indignant about trading Weight, Amonte, and, to a lesser extent, Gartner. But we needed to get one. And I’m so glad we got that one.
