Good morning, boneheads!
I thought I’d give you a new clean page to work with until Go Time tomorrow. Middle of October and there is still very little to talk about, or follow, when it comes to the Rangers. But it all really starts tomorrow.

Thank goodness for the new post ilb. James was fighting with himself on the other one.
ILB how can it start if it’s already over?
BDL,
I just never cease to be amazed by the amount of negativity and grief that flows through here. I think people go out in search of it. Let’s keep tabs on every player that theyve traded in the last three years. Let’s look at the stats for every draft pick they passed up. Let’s track Hartford not because we’re interested in how the team does but because we want to criticize the top prospects and evaluate what a failure they are.
Tom Fitzgerald is serving as assistant coach today for the Devils, aka, Tom Fitzgerald is getting his feet wet in order to be prepared to become the interim coach.
Doodie
Good call re Fitzgerald
Devils have given up 29 goals in 6 games. And I thought the Rangers surrendered too many shots….
I tried to say Hynes was on his way out a few days ago and BDL went off about how he and Quinn were in the same boat.
It could be possible that krapsoft, just like Hajek, is a better player at the Nhl level than the AHL level.
Hajek didn’t seem to have the “controversy” surrounding him in the AHL that krapsoft does, nonetheless it my be the same as far as on ice performance goes.
All a moot point though because Jesper must have a roster spot and the rangers couldn’t use krapsoft and his skill on the third line or anything.
I think Hynes has until Saturday. After that, the Devils have a couple of weeks like our past couple of weeks. Just one game in like 10 days. And they’re still at home for two more games after that. That’s a long runway for a new coach to do some work.
Hajek didn’t have that controversy because there wasn’t a guy like Brendan Smith playing on the 3rd line.
I did not say they were in the same boat. Quinn is going to finish this season. And then be evaluated based on the team finish, and the development of the youth/Kakko. If they miss the playoffs and the youth does not progress, I think there is a good chance JD would fire Quinn and bring in his own guy. If they miss the playoffs, but the youth makes significant progress, he stays.
I meant controversy like going back to Europe etc
Or if they make the playoffs and the youth doesn’t “progress”, he stays.
And as far as the youth progressing, which youth are we talking about?
All of them. He doesn’t have to hit on all, but at least half. And if Kakko struggles, he’s gone.
Andersson, Chytil, Kravtsov, Kakko, Howden, Fox, Hajek, Lindgren, an Georgiev. Half of them need to be making contributions.
BDL you remind me of a ski instructor I had once. He says to me “here’s what you do…Go that way….really fast…if something gets in your way….turn” 🙂
Andersson, Chytil, Kravtsov, Kakko, Howden, Fox, Hajek, Lindgren, an Georgiev.
What’s half of 9? 4.5 players need to develop properly? What if it’s 4 but one isn’t Georgiev? Do we fire Allaire?
Doesn’t matter. We’re trading Georgiev at the draft in June. I’m certain of it.
I’d say howden, kakko, fox, and Georgiev don’t have to “improve”much at all over being on the roster from here on out. Yes, as they grow older they need to be better players but I don’t believe the organization is holding a certain statistical achievement goal on those players over quinn’s head.
Lindgren is just a victim of numbers right now on the left, he’s ready and Hajek is here also so I think he’s not a concern to Quinn and his perceived job security.
Krapsoft was better than chytil in the preseason and when you have fast and smith in the top 9 ahead of him while he’s in Hartford , I’m not sure if that’s on the coach or the gym.
Chytil is a late first round pick that plays one zone, his development is on Hartford and if he doesn’t pan out (I think he will) it’s a lost gamble for the organization being a reach where he was drafted.
So is the reality of Quinn’s fate tied to one “youth” player, a top ten pick playing better than his current line up position on the 4th line…andersson?
Andersson or bust for Quinn!!!
don’t think Quinn is going anywhere guys
New York Rangers the more things change the more they stay the same!
Andersson on the 4th line is as dumb as trying to get me to stay home on any given night!
Where’s my two dollars
” I’m not sure if that’s on the coach or the gym.”
gym? What’s a gym?
Ohhhh, a gym!
(This joke doesn’t translate well in words)
Sorry for the typo…gm not gym
I also don’t think DQ is in danger of going anywhere
Spot on, Wicky. Seems like there’s an underlying bone to pick here as a result of Chytil’s lack of hard work and progression. The GM sucks because he drafted him and Andersson. Now the coach isn’t living up to expectations because neither is playing top six here. 3 games into the season and some practice line combs come out on twitter and it’s “welp! looks like the coach hates Andersson”. Those two draft picks are not the end all – be all for this organization. They’re just devoid of natural center prospects and far too many people are hypercritical of both Zibanejad and Strome. Add a sprinkle of Hayes apologists to the mix and you have a recipe for the ensuing nonsense.
When a coach is hired to get a team over the top, and the team does not get over the top, the coach gets fired. When a team hires a coach to develop the young players, and the young players do not develop, the coach gets fired.
RR2.com: Nothing is happening. Insert how everything is happening here.
Beats working! (Not sure it beats fishing.)
Yeah but not every team has a psychotic fan base of armchair GMs standing over said coaches with a stop watch going “THIS IS TAKING TOO LONG!!”, BDL.
There’s no patience or rationalizing. It was the same crap last year. Handful of games and everyone “Knew” everything.
If Andersson does not progress past 4th line center this season, the GM is not going to say, my fault, coach did a great job with him.
Same crap was said about Buch when he was coming up a few years back. “Oh, he wants to go home! Oh, he feels mismanaged! Oh, blah blah poop!”… all a big nothing.
I will repeat. I do not think Quinn is getting fired during this season. If it happens, it will be after this season, or early next. There is zero doubt in my mind his clock is ticking. Progress needs to be made this year.
Yeah because every player CAN be developed into Ryan Getzlaf and Brady Tkachuk right? Remember Jamie Lundmark?
I remember a lot of players.
If Hynes is fired, he can always fall back on his ketchup fortune.
I remember Dave Gagne, Mark Tinordi, and Terry Carkner.
Bdl
I get what you are saying, you’re just losing me on the word “develop”.
I don’t think DQ was hired to develop in the sense of the word as I am interpreting it. That “develop” is on Hartford imo.
Every nhler needs to improve every season whether a rookie or a 30 year old vet. That’s being a pro not development imo.
Some young guys are pro ready, you see them on the roster now (along with numbers victim lindgren and imo krapsoft but that just my opinion on him), the guys that need development, chytil in particular, are in Hartford and that’s on Hartford.
DQ’s job is deployment. Put these guys in the best position to succeed based on their skill set and way to contribute to the team on the ice and win as many games as possible.
There are certainly valid arguments to his deployment early on this season to include kakko not on the first line (debatable for sure) and andersson on the 4th (not very debatable imo).
DQ should be graded on his deployment and wins, nor development imo.
I also think he was hired due to his working and communication with younger millennial type players in college and a bit more of an in your face guy than the previous idiot that coached the rangers.
Honestly, I’ll can the jokes for a minute, BDL. It’s not about Quinn getting fired or being in jeopardy. I think a lot of people are expecting an overnight miracle because they signed Panarin and Trouba. It doesn’t work that way. Never has and you know that better than I as you’ve seen many generations of trades and signings etc.
Not every player develops in a year or even two. Some don’t ever develop. I don’t see how any of us can give Quinn or any other coach a grade based on 3 games and a training camp. I hate to tell you, but Chytil may not have a future in this organization and it isn’t Quinn’s fault.
Ok, how about progress.
Is Crapsoft making 70 grand down there? Plenty to enjoy the fine dining and glittering night life of Hartford.
I never used the word fault. You are being to literal. If Gorton hired him to be the guy to lead the youth, and the youth doesn’t pan out, the blame is going to the coach. It may be his fault, it may not, but the blame is going there.
Wick, I don’t know that any coach can be graded on wins. What if he turns this team into one with a legit identity but they just don’t win enough to make the post season in a tight race in the East?
I do get what you’re saying though. Put these guys in the right situations and let them play at their best.
Lias or Howden in between Smith and Fast isn’t cutting it.
Methinks management likes Quinn. Old school attitudes, new school theories, media savvy. Doesn’t mean he’ll retire here, but unless he starts doing coke in the toilet, he’s here for a while.
Well let me ask you this BDL. Did the coach draft those players? Did he have any say? Was he even part of the organization when they drafted them? No. No. And I don’t remember. So why does he live and die by whether they’re a success at the NHL level? Because let’s face it. Out of all the names being brought up today this is purely a convo based around Andersson and Chytil.
Well hang on coos. Do you mean coke while SITTING on a toilet? Or actually trying to sniff it out of the base of a toilet that doesnt have enough water in it to wash away the coke? Because there IS a difference.
Year after year, why is it that the semi-talented Fast and few others work their azzes off?
Bdl
Progress is fine but I think that’s as much on the players being pros as it is on the coach.
Look at Zibanejad, only started taking offseason training and diet seriously the last couple of seasons and if you look at his last couple of seasons he’s taken a step forward but that progress is on him, not the coach.
If DQ was deploying him as the 4C all season and he had half of his point total instead, then that’s on DQ and the lack of progress is on the coach.
NO COKE, PEPSI.
Because he was hired for that particular reason. He was good with young players.
Coaches like Quinn are just stop gap coaches until the team is ready to win. He can last 4 years if he’s able to get them to the playoffs, but they will eventually bring in the guy to finish job. Roger Nielsen to Mike Keenan. Tom Renney to John Torterella, and when Torts failed, they went to AV. Quinn is just the beginning of the new cycle.
Quinn has 3 more years after this…no ticking clock this year or next …just doesn’t fit the message the organization has been sending the fans since the letter
Wicky,
If a young players progress in not on the coach, and the coach was hired specifically for his talent handling young players, then what is the point of hiring someone like Quinn?
James
Wins in the sense of, this is what we gave you as an organization to work with we expect improvement over last year (as an example) and a better record.
I didn’t mean it as they gave him a must reach win total just better team system and results leading to wins.
As bdl stated earlier, very clear the organization does not want to be Arizona, Edmonton, Buffalo etc. They did their 18 ish month rebuild like gorton said he’d do when it started midway through AV’s last season, now they are wanting to start long term competition for and in the playoffs.
What’s Quinn reasonably expected to do, lace them up and get a whip?
BobbyO,
I think you are underestimating the input JD may have, plus how much longer do you suppose ownership is going to accept no playoff gates.
All the Quinn talk ridiculous, but keeps the Blog rolling.
I cannot imagine ownership, JD, and Gorton accepting another February, March and April like the last two where there was no hope left in the season, and the team was just playing out the string.
Bdl
As I stated in my original post on this, it depends on the young player. If the player is pro/nhl it’s on the player to be ready and the coach to put him in the position to succeed based on his attributes and skill.
If DQ was just a development coach, he’d be the head coach of Hartford.
I think you are trying to draw a line that can’t be drawn about “progress”
A head coach is as much if not more a psychologist and communication expert than he is a skill developer and on ice trainer.
BDL, JD comments have been right in line with previous ones from Gorton and organization —they want to win but are going to be patient
I think the DQ convo is fine. No one is being dramatic and it’s civil with good points all around.
Not sure why some think it’s ridiculous or nonsense to have this convo during a long stretch of gameless days during a hockey season.
Trades, line combos, cap space, coaching…I mean why are any of these hockey topics an issue for some?
We can’t make jokes because someone will get butt hurt.
What would some of you complainers like the subject matter to be?
Or maybe James is right and some folks just aren’t happy unless they’re complaining about something
Complainer complaining about complainers complaining.
Definitely one way to spin things
Probably easier than someone just admitting they shouldn’t be complaining
Does anybody remember the Rangers? What ever happened to them?
Messier goes into banking. – Loan Ranger.
“fine dining and glittering night life of Hartford.” LOL
The TGI Friday’s is open late in the weekends!
Slatsko
They were sold to Saudi Arabia
BDL you act as though Quinn was only brought in because there was youth to develop. How about for a fresh take on stuff? Dallas hired Montgomery. The Leafs will probably bring in Keefe by next summer. Coaches are getting younger. Coaches are getting recruited out of the college scene.
When Quinn reaches his end of watch what do you think the plan is going to be? Another AV? Claude Julien? Torts 3.0?
No. The league is changing. That’s why they brought in Quinn. He didn’t get hired with a contingency clause about player development. Not any more than any coach ever is at least.
We could have had Trotz. Well known that he was on his way out. Wide-eyed, Mgmt. chose Quinn. Will be quite a while before they even think of changing that.
I will add to this convo, that when they do make a coaching change one day it shouldn’t be a coach who is the polar opposite in his approach and his philosophies. (READ: AV jr). They need to keep consistent once all these guys are “developed” not force them into a new identity and a new way of playing..
Trotz would have been great imo
Messier’s 60 billion square foot skating complex due to open in late summer circa 2250.
That IS why Quinn was hired!
To run Messier’s skating complex?
We could have had the Trotz. Dire Rhea.
Anybody remember Rhea? Like the Temple Bar at Yale, we don’t need to ban women; they disappear on their own. Welcome back if you read this.
Read between the lines and you’ll see that (among other things) Q wants BANGING and muscle and is disenchanted with those who don’t provide it.
Chytil scouting report that he was going to be a project. I think it was surprising how well he did in Hartford as a 18 yo.
At 19 we didn’t have numbers to dress so he got to stay up. A little disappointing he didn’t continue his meteoric rise that we saw post draft.
If Chytil doesn’t make it even for 2 more seasons, there is nothing wrong with that on a development side. It may suck as management tries to find a 2C but the dough has to rise and bake for the amount of time called for. It can’t just be forced to be ready cause you’re hungry.
James,
I certainly don’t want them to hire a retread like Berube, or Trotz. Those kind of guys never workout.
If they don’t workout, they’ll be more in danger of health issues when they get older.
Bobby Orr: “I received terrible instruction, like Chytil. Little wonder I flopped.”
Here ya go, James. I think Homer Simpson has the perfect reply to your post at 11:40 about the negativity about this team.
I don’t think DQ is in any danger at the moment. But his tenure is under the watch of two different eyes, I agree with BDL
What I liked about DQ is that he instilled a different mentality, somewhat similar to Torts’. Play hard, north-south, leave everything out there. He was successful in that. Also, apparently without being as antagonistic as Torts was. He also introduced a structure, and that showed during the first part of last season.
What I do not like so far is that this structure fell apart after mid-January or so. I’m also concerned of his inability to adjust during games. Experience at this level? Maybe. Tippett out-coached him the other night. Lastly, his deployment of Smith to a be a 3rd line winger is perplexing.
I don’t remember anyone saying DQ had free reign or wasn’t fireable, I think most simply disagreed with the timeline bdl was suggesting.
Simple. Smith is versatile and tough. Two things sorely lacking here. Sad but simple.
The structure fell apart when they cleaned house …not sure you can say he was out-coached the other night when they lost on some flukish goals…its up to the players to establish a forecheck instead of trying to score off the rush every time …think thats what he’s trying to do with the most recent changes
I wish the rangers had a big speedy winger that played in the top six that could forecheck like crazy….maybe they should trade for an evander kane type.
😉
as a whole, the rangers are heading in the right direction. Finally obtaining multiple talented players. They just need time to marinate.
Landeskog and McKinnon didn’t make colorado instant contenders
In a couple years being able to throw panerin zibinejad and a grown up kakko and Kravstov out there back to back shifts will finally make a threat.
Power play to be respected
A defense that will be overhauled with affordable youth
This will all go according to plan. Stop fretting the now
Most teams will not have that number of big time talents out there.
Toronto has a lot of guys that are highly paid top end talent
Pittsburg and Boston and Washington are on their last legs of aging out their stars. And have been good enough so far to have depleted talent pool to take their places.
The salary cap will find Tampa soon so their window is now.
“I’m also concerned of his inability to adjust during games. Experience at this level? Maybe. Tippett out-coached him the other night. Lastly, his deployment of Smith to a be a 3rd line winger is perplexing.”
This!!!!
He lost his D match up in Winnipeg game too. I am starting to debate how good of a coach he is at this level.
I would rather had Trotz.
So ugh which boneheads fake account is cup94?
Wtf
The rangers are a 1st class organization but they can’t find someone to do the laundry without shrinking everyone’s pants? 😉
(I’ll do the laundry, bet id find some expensive loose change)

Ha! Welcome back, cup94! Been a very long while.
I am here every day.:)
25 years, by my count.
I’m going to need a heat map for those 25 years
It wouldn’t be good.
Also, don’t know if you’ve seen it, but there’s been problems with how the NHL is tracking its shots this season, so all of the locational shooting data this season is unreliable.
Excellent conversation.
I don’t think Quinn is on any hot seat this season, barring any catastrophe. According to team president, we are still in “Build” mode. As in we are building (verb) towards a sustained run of excellence that everyone hopes will result in Coupe de Stanley.
I can’t wait for a game. These off days blow chunks.
So the heat maps are unreliable as well?
Akbar
They’re a trap!!!
for this season, so far, yes.

Always enjoy reading the various Bonehead opinions. Often do not have anything to add. Today, I only have one thing to add: Brendan Smith is in the a Rangers top 9. Someone thought they were good enough to sniff the playoffs? 🤪
Dog days of October. Feels like we should be discussing George Grimm or reading somebody’s guest blog.

That is hilarious Alex. Usually Scandinavians are more reserved.
Wish that was in English. But the subtitles are worth it. If it were English it would be an all time highlight like Denny Green, Alan iverson, mora “playoffs?!”
Scandinavian Torts is on fire! LOL
Too funny!
I’m just about out of energy for self-deprecation, but if we come up any more trend analysis of this wonderfully inactive squad, why, I’ll… I’ll… I’ll probably contribute to it.
Drop. The. Damn. Puck.
Sorry, but nothing has ever been as funny as the hitler shampoo boy rangers video
King time for Henrik and Germany
Rumor has it the Rangers play hockey tonight
Roomba has it that Rangers will clean up tonight.
Ridiculous
Boring team without Panarin.
Not.
Georgiev starts tonight. Probably a good call since the Devils are due for a breakout and Hank historically craps the bed in these situations.
3:1 Rangers.
Kaapo with a hat-trick.
Kappo and Hughes drop the gloves. Staal with the SO winner.
Maybe Mayor “Goldie” Wilson should coach the team. They say “progress” is his middle name!
Maaaaaayor! I like the sound of that!
Let’s all relax with drawing conclusions with this team…. they’ve played a whopping 3 games! Let’s at least wait until they play 4!
I think I might stay home tonight and watch Hughes score the GWG!
If Hughes drops the gloves he’ll weigh 155!
Minx, final result tonight will be NYR 1 NJD 0 OT, GWG: B. Smith
This will prompt bonehead nation to reverse course and call for Smith to move to the 2nd line and IF/THE to 3rd.
Devils top center and dman out tonight
Does that push Hughes to the 1st line.
Tough game for the devils to play
Beezle
I like it could even end up
Panarin Zibanejad Smith
Kreider Mckegg Fast
They want that 3rd line to set a forecheck identity that the rest of the team can see and then follow.
That’s what smith on the 3rd line speaks to me.
I want
Lemeuix-andersson-strome
Smith/haley/mckegg-Boyle-fast
I want Boyle on the team. That’s a good reliable 12 minutes or more a game on the ice, has played D in the past when needed, and I want him in the locker room
I think strome on either andersson/howdens wing Creates a doublefold effect, that it makes both strome and either center better/more efficient.
And when you view the roster that way the only veteran center we have is Mika and he’s the nuts and bolts of the offensive attack.
Boyle’s not a luxury, he’s a sorely needed veteran 200 foot center who you can rely on for a quarter of the game.
If you chop the game down into blocks that way, a guy like Boyle makes coaching easier. Your throwing your top guys out there for a 1/4 to 1/3 of the game and you feel comfortable with those minutes. If you add a guy like Boyle when you currently don’t have a comparable center to take those minutes, that’s another 1/4 of the game in which the coach is comfortable with the minutes.
It’s like bankable minutes.
And as a coach your then looking at 30 minutes in which your hoping your middle lines can win their shifts and matchups.
Right now it’s mika and strome. But your not maximizing Anderson’s chances and there for coach is not playing him that much and suddenly there’s even more minutes he has to load on Mika or potentially deal with lost or wasted shifts
Sign Boyle.
Hope howden can be a Dubi to kakko/Kreiders jagr (is that the way to say it?)
Attach strome to andersson hip and hope the combo can combine to create a good minute taking shift winning line.
Bread-mika-buch
Kreids-howden-kakko
Or
Kreids-mika-buch
Bread-howden-kakko
Lemeuix-andersson-strome
Smith-Boyle-fast
(Mckegg/Haley)
I said this on hfboards this morning
Boyle’s not waiting at home bc he doesn’t have offers, he’s obviously waiting on a specific team or two.
Rangers/bruins/ etc…
Think Boyle’s a ranger before thanksgiving myself
I’d welcome Bran Boyle back for depth
I can hear michaletti now
‘The thing about Brian Boyle, he just gives you quality reliable minutes that allows the coach and team to go about their business with more certainty and confidence, and that’s why they brought him in to help this young rangers team’
Oh and Id groom girardi into an on bench coach for the D if I were JD.
And id have Eric tell papi step that Derek’s got a coaching job waiting for him the moment he retires
Jtripping for old times sake 🙂
Bold prediction: Hughes and Kakko do nothing tonight and Subban scores the game winner.
Think we would see Chtyil back before Boyle considered
From Friedman’s 31 thoughts
There are only two players who have played 100 five-on-five minutes and not been scored upon. They are Anaheim’s Cam Fowler (101:57, 6-0 Ducks) and Tampa Bay’s Ryan McDonagh (100:46, 4-0 Lightning).
Remember when we were gonna trade for Fowler?
Remember when McDonagh was a Ranger?
A riddle for Ryan McDonagh: “what’s 6 foot 3 inches tall, right handed and has all of your money? Give up? Jacob Trouba”
Rangers had no problem paying McDonough for last year and this year or next year. It’s all the years after that they didn’t want to pay for.
As enamored as Rangers fans seem to be with all of the ex-Rangers in the league, they will see WHY these guys were dealt away in those years too, Tom.

So is Lemieux prucha’d or still sick? Could be a little bit of both, considering his unnecessary penalty against Edmonton.
That was a while ago that he took that penalty, ILB.
No to Boyle we have enough boyles on this cotton candy crew already!
See what happens when I’m not here to give you a topic to call me an idiot about? You end talking about signing Brian Boyle.
I don’t like it, BDL.
