McDonagh looks to have his game back in order.
Colorado wins a Cup before the Rangers.
Book it.
Nathan Mackinnon is a freak!
Seattle wins a cup before Rangers

Tax Free w/ a monster hit. Didn’t think he still had it in him….
Tax Free with the final nail in the Devils’ coffin.
I bet Tampa wishes they had Shattenkirk instead of McDonagh. Shattenkirkians rejoice. Net positive!!!!
let’s go Tampa. 4 down 12 to go.

This is a helluva interview by Buchnevich to a Russian paper. Wow.
Not a good look for Buchnevich.
If the team conceded, he played a lot in the 3rd period. And if they won, he sat. Coincidence?
I think we all assumed AV had issues with certain players, but he’s gone now. Shut up and prove him wrong.
McD is a great 2nd pair guy and will excel there with Tampa where Hedman is the top guy. Rangers made him “the guy” and the captain. That’s not on him, but, he was looking to get paid for that role and Gorton decided he couldn’t go 7×7. It will be interesting wher he slots in as a UFA next year. Hedman got 63 for 8 and he was 4 years younger. Also Stralman will be a UFA next and is the same age and makes about the same as McD. Will Stevie Y be willing to carry 3 D at $6million + and if so for how long? Stralman could be the odd man out again.
The Buchnevich interview may have lost a lot in translation. He wasn’t happy with how the season went. Miller may be the only one happy with how things turned out. At best he was part of the problem. He should be a professional and workout over the summer and contribute to a better outcome next year.
So if the Rangers went all in to make the playoffs they would have been done today. Right call by Fishboy. Now comes the tough part. He’s on the clock now.
Pageau?
McDonagh playing with Stralman. He must be a very happy man.
I’m not saying we’re heading in the wrong direction with the rebuild definitely on board no matter how long it takes, hopefully not a lifetime. But IMO our previous coach (not mentioning his name) should have been shown the door immediately after the Sens series. He was behind the bench chewing gum 1 maybe 2 seasons too long. Seeing all these ex Rangers in lighting blue stinks the house out!
Gord Clarke needs a phone booth!
Mac can be a 1st pair defenseman if he has a good partner and he makes smart decisions with the puck. He didn’t have the former really once Stralman left and he made too many of the latter the last couple years. Can’t do anything about it now but Sather took the franchise down a bad path that they couldn’t overcome when he let Stralman go
once they traded stepan and raanta for 7th overall this past season was the beginning of the rebuild – no matter who was the coach.
but i guess – still get to blame AV for this coming season for overall team play and stunted growth for players like buch. but just 1 more year. then it’s on the new coach as well as gorton/sather/clark.

Grrrr…I never know which link to use…
So…. anyone else lighting up New Jersey’s Twitter account?
So I have a question for the group. The Rangers have now decided that several players are not worth what it would cost to keep them on the roster. Stepan, Miller and McD were all moved on this basis. Since they have said you can’t win with a team of 18 year olds you have to pay some of your R/UFAs. So what are the criteria used to decide who to keep assuming he is not a “generational” player? No long-term contracts lasting to when the player is older than 33 or34? No LTCs for players who skills seem to be diminishing? Does he have to have leadership potential to be kept? If you don’t do it systematically you are always going to have a screwed up roster and have cap issues.
ORF
part of problem is they are paying good money to a diminished asset (injuries) like Staal plus a good amount of buyout for Girardi. Also, a bad signing in Shatty. Henrik is taking a lot of the cap for next 3 years as well and he’s not the same as a few years ago.
so the above cost us 1 or 2 of the guys you named , probably Miller for sure.
Not everybody may have loved him as player and he still needs to find another level, but Stepan at least isn’t really overpaid. Like it or not that is the market rate for a solid two way center who will put up near 60 pts and his deal ends at 30, so his prime years shouldnt be over yet. Macs new deal doesn’t start until 28, so likely have to pay more than you’d like for non-peak years, so was the right move there. Staal’s peak years were done once the eye injury occurred, so the contract was really never a smart hockey or cap decision
If Stall had not been injured so severely, so often his deal would not look as bad as it does. You cannot predict that.
Aboot Buchnevich’s interview — nothing was lost in translation.

Use .jpg link for the photo sharing.
Buch’s interview once again proves how AV and young players don’t mix well.
Glad AV is gone.
Sorry, Evr
but I deleted your Devils post. I cannot stand looking at their logo.
Seriously C3Po? What is this…1940’s Germany?
Kovalchuk is coming! Gonna pocket like 6 mill of our money 🙂
Ev
Yes. 1940′ Germany and you are the Nazi 🙂
That logo was taking half of the fuggin screen… learn how to upload in proper format 🙂
Find a better way to read the blog then cuz it looked fine to me.
I’m making this blog great again. I’m gonna force you to disarm like the DPRK.
Oy vey. Smh
The centre that wasn’t overpaid was brassard
Tym, staal was extended after his eye injury and after two concussions. Rangers knew all that, saw the effect it had on his play and still signed him longterm….woof
——
Wick, tho brass’ production has fallen off somewhat since leaving the rangers. Stepan has yet to crack 60 points, but he had another year 56pt year despite playing for the yotes. Greatest mistake the rangers made with him was not extending him on a Mac type deal after his ELC, but they didn’t so they had to pay market. Tho at least he isn’t getting Toews money to put up those points!!
uh…Step was the only one with market value (not Staal, Gman) because of the reasons stated, not a reason to keep him per se, but a reason the Yotes would make that deal. The got a #1 C and a #1 Goalie for the 7th pick and a young D retread. Underwhelming? For sho’ but we don’t know the market and that is the only data point. I mean, they still suck…
.
Vegas layed out the blueprint, focus on style and skill, not skill and what one hopes will develop. Lumbus has to be shaking their head watching Karlsson light it up for $.925M. Vegas went around and looked for 200 ft players who had a motor to go all game. Now, obviously other teams aren’t not afforded the same clean slate and the ability to pick off others rosters…or are they??

SN, you think Step sucks?
Horrorfying, C3
Did Wicky break the NJ Devils twitter feed? No snarky comments about the Rangers not being in the playoffs this year?? No pictures of golf courses?
SN I’ll just add this- the Rangers didn’t have to sell AZ on Stepan. The GM was very high on the player and felt he was exactly what his team needed down the middle. Hammering out the price wasn’t about “well we are taking the best of the worst off your roster” it was “how can we get this done without giving up too much youth for a veteran we want?”…
Jeff Gorton apparently old enough to have starred in episodes of the twilight zone

Being up against the cap also forced them into bridge deals with some players. If you determine that a player is someone you want to keep beyond his RFA years it seems prudent to buy out some of his UFA years rather than go the bridge deal route. They did that with Zbad, Kreider and McD. You get some of their prime years without committing to big $s for a player in his mid 30s. They could have done that with Stepan and have held onto him for a couple of more seasons, but, the cap situation wouldn’t allow it.
AV sucks.
No, I meant the Yotes still suck. And we don’t know the true market for Step, unless reports have come out about what other teams offered to establish a range of proposals in the market.
No doubt, the Yotes wanted Step, a 1C- with playoff pedigree, there is no downside unless they give up too much for him and a future #1Goalie, which, by all indications, they did not…
From everything I’ve read about the AZ deal was raanta was the key not stepan. Arizona was the only team willing to take stepan (at full cap value) and raanta had to be included or no deal.
I read into that as stepan is not worth his contract and the only way to get a team to take him was to include a #1 goalie.
That’s not normally the way you have to make a deal with at team if you are trading them a 1C (or even a 2C) at a market value or below contract.
Stepan was overpaid for what he is, move on.
Of course, those lamenting stepan and his contract are the same one that probably said they wouldn’t trade stepan for Bergeron straight up lol.
I’d take Toews at his cap hit over stepan with his any day. Especially on a team with a lot of young centres!
Ugggh… Can we turn the page on Stepan already?! He’s gone. He’s been gone. As far as I know, time travel doesn’t exist, so the trade can’t be rescinded/ redone to get the assets you’d want.
Done. Over.
Let’s see what happens next weekend with the draft lottery and go from there! We’re finally getting the rebuild we were do for…. so, let’s see if our scouts can get the job done and not go “off the board” too much. I’m talking to you, Gordie….
due*, not “do.”
10.5m/yr for 50-55 pts, big no thanks there
Hockey is not all about stats
Sorry 58 pts seems to be his new normal
You can’t say Stepan is overpaid at 6.5m/yr for putting up 55-58 pts on a regular basis and playing a sound two way game, while at the same time say Toews isn’t overpaid if he puts up similar or at times slightly higher point totals while playing a better (but not 4m/yr better) two way game. Now you want to tell me Toews is an 7-8m/yr player tops then I’d agree
Disappointed in the BJs again. Not an Ovie hater by any means, just get much enjoyment out of the Craps going out the first round. Not sure what they did to get into hockey purgatory but its fun to watch.
Gotcha SN. And I’d say if anything Arizona underpaid for the pair of players we sent them, who will be solid contributors for the life’s of their respective contracts. We may have gotten a future Stepan in a couple years. Not expecting anything from the d we took on
Not happy with Buch interview, not that I was overly happy with his play this season either. Basically whining that there were consequences to making the same mistakes or for lack of effort. If he wants the freedom to play with no consequences, there are lots of pond hockey teams that will take him. Pay isn’t that great though.
Good afternoon, boneheads!
Hello from the land of sweltering heat, long lines and crying children everywhere! 😊
Anything new on the blog except revisionist theories, and no matter what they’ve done, will do in the future, it’s done the wrong way? 😃
It took the Devils almost two weeks to win one more playoff game than Rangers.
3C – I’ve been saying for years that Haze looks like Townshend. 🙂
Beezle, think he was too candid for his own good. But I read that part being more that the coaches didn’t adequately communicate to him what he did wrong and how he should best work to improve on it. Language barrier may have been an issue on both sides, but would think there would be an interpreter on the staff. Some young players like Buch clearly need very hands on coaching and AV doesn’t seem to have been that kind of coach here in any language.
Haze Townshend.
I think Gorton heard and heard well what Dolan wants and he will set about satisfying him. Number one is, as always, talent, but a close second is CHARACTER however you want to define it. I can.
3C – Speedball Wizard

I never said Toews wasn’t overpaid.
Stepan was/is overpaid imo, so you can draw your own conclusions re Toews with that statement.
All that said, I take Toews over stepan, end of story (especially if you have a lot of young centres/forwards on your team).
The stepan fan boys are laughable.
As someone said earlier he’s gone, move along.
Step overpaid/overrated. That said, he should still be here in terms of what we got for him.
In a convo between stepan and Toews, Toews couldn’t hear him because of his Stanley cup rings in his ears (sorry Patrick, had to change the names in the scenario ;)).
Stepan couldn’t hold Toews jock for 4 dollars or 4 mil more per season.
Prediction: We won’t see a player-friendly head coach unless he’s a gifted teacher.
Who’s higher Peter Haze or Kevin Townsend?
Now, on a serious note, is the draft lottery televised?
Vincent for rangers coach
I’m a young player coming from a totally different culture, speaking a totally different language. My second year in the league. Adaptation to a new country and new style of game is still a problem. Language is still a problem. I just turned 23 years old. And I am floating down the river all by myself without any guidance. Sure… all my fault.
I’m so new here, I tend to tell the truth. That will change once I become acclimated to America.
