Rangers-4, Canucks-3 (SO)

Good morning, boneheads!

There is no way in hell they should’ve won this game. No way! In fact, there is no way they should’ve gotten 1 point either. Except they did.

  1. This would’ve been a very painful loss because of the way they played for one period, and for three quarters of the second, and because Canucks aren’t very good. Especially in their own zone, under pressure.
  2. They came out looking discombobulated and out of energy. They couldn’t make any clear decisions with the puck. Play after play. And it wasn’t only because a passer couldn’t decide what to do with it, but also because he had very few options. They looked like they were playing a non-rival preseason game with Matt Maccarone centering one of their lines. I was looking for his big mustache all over the ice. I can’t even tell you who looked remotely decent. Grabner maybe? Hank didn’t have his best game, but he kept them in it during this stretch.
  3. Around 5 minutes to go in the second they got a PP. Didn’t produce a goal, but it looked good. And it woke them up. Is it possible that around 3:45 pm somebody’s mom texted them:” I thought you had a game this afternoon?”. Fast potted one in after a broken play, and it turned the tables.
  4. Almost everyone looked like an NHL player in the third. They got two points, that’s all that counts. Except, let’s hope the last two games they won isn’t the beginning of a losing streak. Because that’s exactly how it usually starts.
  5. Brady Skjei has been their best defenseman since McDonagh went down. By a mile. He’s been much better defensively lately,  and his decisions to go in on the offense are very well timed.
  6. Brandan Smith threw a couple of heavy hits separating players from a puck. Good to see, they’ll need it from him going forward. Much better game than against Detroit.
  7. I liked what I saw from both teams in the third. They went for it. Why not, different conferences, these aren’t 4 point games.
  8. Sedin twins. I can’t believe they’ve been playing in the NHL for over 17 years. They still have an unbelievable skill set. The puck seems to find them all the time, and they still can find each other on the ice. Dangerous every shift. Every time they were on the ice in OT I thought that was it.
  9. David Desharnais started this season very well, and it looked like it was a rare cheap offseason signing that may actually work. Doesn’t look it anymore. He isn’t good enough for a third line center. Nor he is a fourth line center. Look, if he isn’t going to play, perhaps it’s time to cut the cord. If they don’t want to rush Chytil ( at least not until after WJ in Buffalo) maybe they should call up Lettieri.
  10. Last week I saw a blip on internet about Bettman’s projection of HRR for this season. He was reportedly projecting a $4.5-5B figure. I’ll try to find the whole article again and if there is a downtime ( both for NY Rangers and for me at work), I’ll try to crunch up some figures in terms of the next year’s Salary Cap and what it may mean for this upcoming offseason. Because if he is right, it may change the whole landscape of free agents signings for the next two years. It could be huge.

Anything you want to post, be it a game review, random g(j)ibberish, or something totally different, please email me at ilbster@yahoo.com

I’m hoping that Doodie comes back soon too. Or, better yet, Carp finally decides to resurface with his own place. Until then, we will do what we can. With everyone’s help.

Great write up; fans deserved a refund after 1st period. Woof.
    .
Re 4C; Boo comes back and DD as Black Ace works. Letteri doing good things in Hartford so worth a look as well. All depends on Boo’s timetable for return.
    .
Nash passed the puck leading to a big goal, hope he remembers that. From that angle he usually shoots. FWIW, it was Del Zaster playing D on that play.
    .
18 looks to be slowing down game by game. Playing with 47 can’t help.

I know, this is from eklund (from yesterday) but figured I’d post.
The New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres are once again talking Evander Kane. “Talks have increased from “exploratory to serious,” according to one NHL source. Kane, a free agent next summer, has 12 goals and 23 points in 24 games for the Sabres this season.

Last time eklund was right I was still dating my wife. Who is he replacing on the L in top 6? And who is going back to Bufallo? Kane’s cap hit is $5.25M

Sabres would be insane not to try to move him, and quickly. He’s never been close to a point-a-game guy until now. Strike while the iron’s hot unless you think this is suddenly the norm, like Grabner.

  7. Eljay Avatar

Great write-up. Like AV said in post game good teams find a way to win games like this. But what was wrong with ice? That was a big problem it seems, tripping people up, stopping pucks (when’s the last time you’ve seen so many pucks left behind by a player?). No one said anything about it until I heard a comment from Dave briefly in passing on the post game show.

Nice write up…Rangers had way too many turnovers yesterday. In reference to Vancouver defense, was impressed with Tanev who is supposedly on the market. Sedin still dangerous but both watched Vescey cruise into slot for tying goal

The last time Kane had a season like this, he was in a contract year.
When Boo comes back, there would still be an opening for Leterri. Unless you believe that Carey is an answer.

  10. Norm Merton Avatar

Kane never had anything like the 78-pt. season his stats pro-rate to at present. I’m not saying don’t get him if you can, but be wary of a guy who is a) not likely to keep this pace and b) motivated only by a future contract. In other words, don’t overpay.

the 2nd goal was all on Kampfer and DD – bad board play by Kampfer, DD didnt tie up his man and STaal was a pylon blocking Hank’s view.

Still can’t believe they pulled this one off

  16. Norm Merton Avatar

DD was not directly responsible for either goal of his -2 and did nothing to prevent them, coasting on the first when he could have made a sprint for Eriksson’s stick, and coasting/reaching for Vertanen on the second. You have to make a better effort, successful or not, on both plays.

Didn’t get to see the game but I can imagine exactly how bad they probably looked. Take the two points and run against a mediocre Western conf team.
They’re a bubble team thanks to the way Hank’s played the last month along with guys like Zibby and Buch.
Not every win is gonna be pretty but the points are all that’ll matter come April

The first VAN goal was a joke, lazy , sloppy passing and exiting their own zone, gift the guy the puck and then stand and watch him rip it – Tanner Glass wouldn’t stand for that he’d have chucked some knucks to liven them up !! 😉

  19. Norm Merton Avatar

Desharnais’ man was Gaunce, not Vertanen, though he could have made a better play on the latter. And Staal did not screen Lundqvist, as he was too busy reaching to poke-check, not the right play there. On both goals, zero Rangers did much right.

  20. AnthonyM Avatar

Sorry about being incognito for so long, but my Internet access at home has crapped out – never been so happy to get back to “work” 🙂

People bemoan that we overpaid to get Yandle, but have no problem going after E. Kane. Given Evander’s cap hit, the Rangers will have to overpay to get the Sabres to retain cap space – just like they overpaid Arizona to keep part of Yandle’s cap hit on the Coyotes books.

Agree that the Rangers need to get Pavelec some playing time in Hartford. The Rangers can ride Hank until next weekend when they play the Caps/Devs on back-to-back nights. The Wolf Pack play Wednesday night and then hit the road for two games this weekend. I would guess Pavelec would clear waivers, but I would try and send him down on an NHL Conditioning Assignment so that he can play two of the three Wolf Pack games.

Please no Kane. Not worth the dough or the off ice headaches. If he had personal issues in Buffalo, can only imagine what happens in nyc.

The NYR were a positively depressive 22/8 Give aways/Take aways. Its like they are trying to turn it over. Makes it very hard to win consistently when you consistently let the other team take the puck from you.

And no to Kane, to make it clear. For many above mentioned reasons, plus this one: he is going to be an expensive rental who will displace one of Vesey/Kreider/Buchnevich/Miller on top 6. Wings are crowded as it is. Playing Vesey with Carey and DD isn’t doing any good to his development. He showed last night exactly where he belongs.

That being said, AV has to find some games for Pavelec because this pace is borderline insane.

    From the interwebs re giveaways/takeaways:

Perhaps the most concerning thing about takeaways and giveaways is that there is no definition for them from the NHL. The stats page does nothing to describe what either of these stats actually are. Worse yet there is no glossary or list of definitions on the entire NHL.com site that describes exactly what a takeaway or giveaway is.

….and takeaways make implicit descriptions about possession during a game. A giveaway signals that the player had the puck before the event occurred while a takeaway signals that the player did not.
From there we can ask if a team’s ability to possess the puck is having an impact on the player’s stats.

Perhaps the biggest indication that we need to re-evaluate the use of these statistics is the fact that 2015 Norris trophy winner Erik Karlsson led the league in giveaways in the last two full seasons combined. Behind him were PK Subban and Joe Thornton. While these three players “did the most bad things with the puck” over those two seasons, I highly suspect that some record of the “good things they did with the puck” would vindicate them. Unfortunately, no such data is tracked by the NHL.

  31. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

If you dump the puck and go for a change is that a giveaway? It is usually a solid if not spectacular play. much better than neutral zone turnover with a tired line on the ice. It’s not like football where possession is very clear and every turnover is critical. It’s the D zone turnovers, many times when they are not even pressured that much that hurt the Rangers and turn Hank’s perfect hair gray

You know, I’m beginning to wonder if the reason Hank didn’t ever get on track last season is because he didn’t play enough to get in a rhythm. I know the coaching staff was very concerned about not over-using him, so much so that maybe he didn’t play enough. It seems like, so far, they’re using him a little more and he seems to be doing a little better. I know they shouldn’t over-use him, but I believe there’s a delicate balance to be achieved between over-use and not using him enough.

I’d like to hear Sittoo’s opinion on this because she seems to be very “goalie-centric” in her comments.

I posted that comment about a week ago. I agree with Sittoo’s comment today that Hank may need a rest real soon. He has hit a rhythm, I believe, but AV had better be careful not to burn him out. I would guess he’s getting close to tipping that delicate balance the wrong way.

Long time reader, first time poster….

Big hypothetical here, but if the rangers are in a playoff spot at the deadline would any of you trade Nash for Thornton?

I mean this team needs real centres and has an abundance of wings (just because the rangers have guts that can play centre, doesn’t mean they should long term. I mean av uses a pk unit with no centres (grabner/fast).

    What about kreider for RNH?

  41. Norm Merton Avatar

I think goalie burnout concerns can be overdone. If it were the case that every game was one of those lose-ten-pounds shooting galleries, that would be one thing, but goalies spend most of the game standing or crouching, and stressing. Elite guys like Lundqvist probably wonder what all the fuss is about when they see Suter and Weber skating 26-27 minutes a game. So, yeah, a mental break, fine–goalies shoulder way too much responsibility–but physically, probably not that big a deal.

Hey Eddie! I am indeed goalie centric mostly because my 18 year old grandson has been between the pipes for 10 years and he offers me lots of good info! Plus I love Lundqvist for his play and for the good stuff he does off the ice. I am definitely of the belief that Hank’s struggles last year were the result of never really finding a rhythm which caused him to way overthink things when he was in net. When he gets stuck in the dark cold recesses of that ever churning Swedish brain bad things seem to happen. The stops and starts for the bye week and all star game, being benched for Antti, a couple of illnesses, and the hip injury all conspired to derail his season. This year he played through the rough start which is what he has usually done in the past. Seems to me Benny let AV know that setting a number of games and pencilling in the schedule in advance of the season was a bad way to deal with the highly strung goalie. But as much as I love seeing how well he is playing and how relatively relaxed he seems in net, it is unsustainable. I disagree with Norm when he says goalies are not physically under stress throughout the game. The stress of their hips, knees, and core is extreme which is why most of them break down before they hit Hank’s advanced age of 35. However I also agree that most goalie burnout is mental not physical. It’s a tough job…

RNH is a mediocre version of Stepan who has been trending in the wrong direction the past few years, big pass at any cost. I’d trade Smith for Kane (or Staal, but impossible), otherwise pass as well. SJ is only trading Thorton if they are giving up on the season and in that scenario they would have no desire to take Nash who is also a pending UFA. My guess is SJ would ask for and likely receive from someone a 1st round pick and a highly rated prospect for Thorton…hard pass.

I think the sharks would do Thornton a solid (within reason) if they were out of it and he wanted to go to a team. It would very much depend on what was going back to the sharks in the deal.

I picked those particular trades to make the salaries close to a match even though RNH makes more than kreider.

I don’t think RNH is a stepan retread. Skating alone puts RNH ahead (pun intended) of stepan. RNH isn’t Crosby or Mathews but then neither is stepan.

I disagree on RNH. He’s been forced to play a 2nd/3rd fiddle in Edmonton for years. He’s also been asked to play a match up role while his game is better suited for two-way game with more offensive responsibilities. He would fit in NY nicely. And he’s still 24. I believe Edmonton will have to trade him with large contracts coming up next season. I wouldn’t give up Kreider for him, but I would try to get him if I were Gorton.
As far as Thornton. Remember that NY was willing to pay him $8M to play one year and let Chytil/Anderson grow. But it’s a different scenario at the moment. The only reason NY would go after him is if they firmly believe they’re a strong contender in February. If this were to happen ( certainly does not look like it as of now) trading Nash for Thornton wouldn’t make any sense. You want both of them.

It’s possible they won’t be, and there’s no way they will keep up this win rate until April, but who truly scares you in the 1-7 pack? NJ, Col, NYI, TB, Tor, Det, Was? @SN re give/take aways: the stat has been around forever and no bookworm definition? And we all thought “hits” deserved better. The figures I got for game yesterday met the eye test – they were turning the puck over quite often in the first and second. As to the figures for Karlson and Subban – are they per 60? On a player level its meaningless unless looked at that way.

And even on a team level, there are exceptions, such as the Kings in 2014 (and who always seem at the bottom of the league). Looking today, the teams over a 1.0 ratio (take/give) are St Louis, Columbus, Vegas, Colorado, Carolina, Boston, NJ and Minn. Four of those are also at the top of the point standings.

I suspsect that if we went back and looked at the NYR games the past few years that all agreed they were lucky to win, many would see them giving the puck way (however it may be defined that night) quite often. Perhaps it is a ‘stat’ that better describes the quality of a win or loss.

RNH has played with plenty of offensive talent and he has failed to live up to his projected talent level. Maybe the worse than Stepan comparison was a tad unfair but don’t think he has shown he is really any better, so wouldn’t be eager to give up anything of value for him and he won’t fit under the cap unless a guy like Kreider goes the other way. It will be interesting to see what the Penguins do with their goalie situation with Matt Murray out 2-4 weeks. They only have about $1 million on cap space so they are going to need a cheap option or find a team that is willing to eat some cap hit. Murray shouldn’t qualify for LTIR so that is out.

The Pens are carrying 14 forwards so they can some wiggle room by demoting one, but it would add less than $700,000 (full season figure) to their availability.

Probably not a good time to try and run Pavelec through waivers to get him playing time in Hartford. Rangers would have to go the conditioning stint way.
