CCCP
A few days late but…
September 2nd 1972, all of Canada was stunned when the Soviet Union defeated Team Canada 7-3 at the Montreal Forum in the opening game of the eight game Summit Series. Most hockey “experts” in Canada expected an eight game sweep in this series, such was their lack of respect for the unknown players wearing the CCCP logo.
“Suddenly, that NHL wall of arrogance that so effectively stifled every original thinker since Lester Patrick was showing cracks. Its myth of invincibility had been destroyed,” wrote Hal Sigurdson of the Vancouver Sun.
Spotting Canada a 2-0 lead after one period, including a 1-0 lead in the first minute, the swift Soviets overwhelmed Canada with their speed and pattern passing play as the game turned into a mismatch. Valeri Kharlamov was particularly impressive with his puckhandling and skating speed. Canadian defensemen Rod Seiling and Don Awrey, both standouts in the NHL, were so outclassed by the Soviets that they seemed to spend the game spinning around like turnstiles as their opponents sped past them.
Vintage hockey.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I was first, despite the fact that I have nothing to say, except let’s go, grab Duchene as a center for reasonable trade cost and finalize (solve) roster with this last piece of puzzle. Let us again renew arguments who is number one – him or Ziba (replacing Step/Brass altercation. Good problem to have).
However, Sakic has a last word here…Sigh.
Soviet players referred to Montreal Canadians as ‘fatassky pylonowiczes,’ translated to English as ‘lumbering behemoths.’

coos, sorry, your translation make no sense (except “fatassky” means fat in Polish). Soviet players referred to Montreal Canadians like: “ничего особенного” – translated like “nothing special”, kind of humiliating…
That series clearly revealed that Canadian defensemen, even at the NHL level, that couldn’t handle the puck well to control the play, and were not fast or maneuverable were just not good enough to play against the best that CCCP had to offer.
coos, it would be: fatassky tyłek, if you really like a direct translation. BTW, I got the joke, – you’re the best at wording and definitely do not need to borrow sense of humor from anyone.

Last name Tolstoy is old Russian spelling and pronunciation of word tolstyi, which means – Fat. So, round is locked.
Wacko NY Daily News was just sold for one dollar. They should have donated themselves to Kars for Kids.
simonkimbrell
The Douche is going nowhere while Sakic continues to smoke what he’s smoking. He wants a deal based on potential and every other GM wants a deal based on the facts……in other words Sakic doesn’t want to be seen to be a mug a few years down the line if he turns into a legit 1st line center and all he gets in return is spare parts or rentals.
Bdl
And yet, somehow Canada managed to win that series.
If Sakic wants Skjei for Duchene, you have to do it. It’s the other parts he may ask for that could be a problem. Duchene needs to get out of there, and when he does, look out.
BDL-agree with your 6:38. I think Skjei is a quality asset and I think the Rangers have handled him well thus far. Solid 1st year and he’s learning from McDonough and others here. This year will bring more pressure and should move him from 3rd to 2nd pair. Could bring sophomore slump. I’d hate to lose him because he could be McDonough 2.0 (no guarentees), but you’d have to do Skjei for Duchene. It’s if Sakic wants a 1st or more to go with it in the deal that he loses me. Duchene is a 2 year rental. Also, we’d have to clear cap space to make it work.
ilb2001
Duchene is a 26 year old center who would fill a 1st line duties in NY instantly. He had a down year. But he is playing behind MacKinnon, and he is still on the upswing of his career. Trading Skjei straight up is not going to cut it.
If that’s the case, would he be worth more on the market now, with 2 years left, or next summer? He has a modified NTC with 10 teams list he isn’t wiiling to be traded to.
Carp, is that “inside” knowledge, or your opinion about McD?
Gravy
Assuming no regression, do you sign a 30 year old McD to 5-6 years at $7.5M AAV? Girardi $3.6M dead cap space doesn’t help.
ilb2001
I agree, Carp. So if it’s a forgone conclusion, Gorton should try and trade him now.
Gravy
I could see them buying out the remaining two years of Staal’s contract at that point if they choose to re-sign McD.
Gravy
Or if Shestyorkin turns out to be the real deal, do you consider buying out Hank’s last 2 years? 😮
Bdl
This is what is frustrating me about this off season. It’s done halfway. Halfway between rebuilding, and contending. This team, as it is right now, is not a cup contender. It’s a fight to make the playoffs and out in the first round team. Either they need to add to this team, or rebuild this team. Rebuilding means Nash, Zucc, and McD go. Pick a path and go with it.
Just don’t think they’re going to want to go 7x$8M or more for a guy who will be in his mid-to-late 30s at the end of the deal. … And I got that from somebody who knows. Not a done deal, but a likelihood.
Gravy
Agree BDL. The NFL Jets are finally doing the right thing after all these years. Just blow it up and, hopefully, get the franchise QB. Trading Stepan, but adding Shattenkirk doesn’t really signal anything one way or the other.
ilb2001
BDL, would subtracting McDonagh and adding a legitimate 1st line center make them a contender?
Gravy
Carp, makes sense, and if that’s the case, then they should be listening to any and all offers from now through the deadline.
Bdl
Ilb,
If you believe that Skjei is ready to take McDs place, then yes it does. On D is where all the depth is. So it makes sense to trade from that depth.
St Pete Eli
As long as Hank is here they will still try to win a cup, unsuccessfully of course but they will try anyway. This cotton candy team needs a lot more than a # 1 center to win it all. And to get that player who goes the other way. I know most of you will disagree especially Carp, but I say stick with this group and maybe a top 5 lotto pick is on the horizon. Rangers need elite talent and that is a fact!
ILB – Depends on who the center is and how good the young d-men are – they would to hit on (at the very least) one of the kids being a first pair blueliner.
On the Duchene talk, even if Sakic would take Skjei for Duchene the Rangers don’t have the cap space. They would have to move a forward back to the Avs or somewhere else for no salary. Nash’s contract (money plus modified NTC) doesn’t make him a leading candidate. Based on their salaries (a few fishnagels south of $5 million) that leaves THE and Zuuuccc.
goodguyinsports
3 days off work and still nothing to do.
Even preseason will be fun compared to this.
ilb2001
BDL, I don’t believe Skjei is ready to replace McD. I’m not sure he will ever be able to fill McD shoes. I think he is ready to take on more responsibilities though. But they upgraded their defense by adding a true puck mover/PP specialist, and by signing Smith. Staal is still a solid D-man, especially with reduced responsibilities. My point is, if they decided that McD will not be resigned in 2 years, trade him now. Get a 1st line center, especially if he is still in his prime, and see if Hank can compensate for them losing McD.
I don’t see depth on D, but rather numbers. The Capt. gave us the nice home-town discount last time but this may be his last time in life to cash in. Neuro might have been pursued with that in mind. Neither seems a money-grubbing beast, but why pay an agent if you’re not willing for him to shop around?
Would hate, hate. hate to see Donuts go, but Doosh is twice the Center, talent and speed, that Step is.
Even if Mac were not so talented a DMan, his endless grit and hustle make him stand out around these parts. The only other who brings a bit of that is JT. Haven’t seen enough of Smith, but I’m rooting for him.
According to Brett Cyrgalis, Filip Chytil’s injury is a groin strain (didn’t he play defense for us :-)) that is not as serious an injury as first thought. He will miss the Traverse City Tournament, but could be ready for the start of Training Camp on the 15th.
The Cyrgalis story is mostly about the Leetch and Richards appointments.
Zero chance they get a lottery pick with this group. Also disagree that they will swing for the fences until the end of Lundqvist’s contract. Gorton’s a lot smarter than that.
How little could the RANGERS pay Secretariat to hang around Untucking it?

I would think that there are very few fans that would tolerate a real rebuild. They would just look at the rebuilding years as mismanagement. Besides, it doesn’t always work even though it did for Chicago and Pittsburgh. Edmonton floundered even with all those #1 draft choices. Still, even with McDavid, are barely a playoff team.
I know if I’m handing out $200 a ticket and the team’s record is 12-29 at the break I’m thinking seriously about not renewing season tickets the following year. And, that alone, is the main reason why they won’t go through a rebuild.
Nash could be a dynamic Center. And he wouldn’t have to struggle off the boards with two opponents on his back; he’d already be in scoring position if someone could get him the puck.

What the Byfuglien? He’s a flippin’ defenseman, right? And he can’t play defense? I know there’s a lot of players out there like that, but that’s just screwed up. Defense should be the priority. If not, you don’t belong in the NHL!

You would think they learned their lesson with the Girardi and Staal contracts. Seven years in this sport is way too long, especially since the penalty to get out from under that contract is so great if they decline after a couple of years. I think they did it right with Shattenkirk, only tying him up for 4 years.

Interesting tweak to the video replay rule this season: if a team asks to review an offside call on a goal and gets it wrong, they are punished with a 2-minute penalty. So you could end up losing a goal and then end up on the wrong end of a powerplay. No pressure!!

I tend to agree with CCCP on Duchene being a bit overrated. He might be the type of player that looks good until he is on your team and you watch him for 82 games. I will say the one place where he would be welcomed in NY would be on faceoffs. For his career he wins about 53% – including 62% last year and 58% the year before.
As we think about friends and family who are facing the wrath of Hurricane Irma, let us remember those who died six years ago as part of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl tragedy – including former Rangers Alexander Karpovtsev, Karel Rachunek and (draft pick) Jan Marek.
Rob
Going to be fun when a team gets scored on after a missed offsides, the refs review it but uphold the call anyway, then the team gets scored on again during the ensuing PK.
Also, the league acknowledges goaltender interference reviews are much more subjective, but losing that review still costs a timeout, despite that subjectivity. That doesn’t seem fair.
They should just get rid of the offside video review. Too ticky tacky and if it was so close the ref missed it it probably didn’t matter. Goaltender interference reviews should be initiated at the ref’s or the league’s discretion and nobody should be penalized, since everybody acknowledges they are
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ilb2001
That makes too much sense, Rob 🙂

What the Byfuglien? He’s a flippin’ defenseman, right? And he can’t play defense? I know there’s a lot of players out there like that, but that’s just screwed up. Defense should be the priority. If not, you don’t belong in the NHL!
or move up and play forward…
The narrow-minded person can be determined by too expensive clothes and demonstrative elegance.
Exceptions are rare. I hope, Hank is…
Skjei and Kreider for Duchene and a 3rd round pick?
Miller Duchene Nash
Vesey Zibinijad Zucc
Andersson Hayes Buchnevich
Grabner Deharnais Fast
McDonough Shattenkirk
Staal Smith
Beraglazov DeAngelo
Holden
FWIW-I don’t know if we’re rebuilding, retooling, tanking, or giving it one last kick at the can.
Would yous do this deal?
They’re not tanking, and I don’t think they’re kicking the can this year (or at least, Gorton doesn’t).
Eddie x3 is kicking the can…constantly.
Skjei and Kreider for Duchene
—
that’s like trading Skjei and Kreider for Stepan. Would you do it?
Carp-so you believe Gorton is shooting for 2018-19?
Tom – for real?
Maybe Shea and a 3 Rd for Due Shane
Let’s keep THE enigma and know he will pot 30 and play like a beast if allowed
EddieJ. – I’ve been saying that for 10 years. Twenty?
We should know by Friday Hurricane Irma’s likelihood of smashing Florida. If we get slammed I will be signing off for this weekend for sure. See you on the other side!
Craig Carton arrested. LOL. Couldn’t happen to a better guy. POS.
That’s a shame. Cockroach.
5th in metro book it.
Hmm, “Boomer and Carp” on WFAN sounds good. At least we KNOW we would get some hockey talk!
http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/manhattan/craig-carton-boomer-carton-co-host-arrested-fbi-article-1.3473530
Carton is such a doosh snozzle. What a prick. Hope he has fun at Rikers meeting new and interesting people…
Good morning, boneheads!
I had no idea who this Carton guy was until I saw your posts this morning. Federal charges? Doesn’t sound it’s somebody I’m going to miss.
Colorado has 4 D-men, including Zadorov, who is an unsigned RFA and is threatening to play in Russia. They need more than just 1 defenseman.
https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/avalanche
If Carton ever gets wind of this arrest, he will crucify himself.
Boomer sounded kinda pissy this morning. That explains it.
Carp and Wick for the morning show!
Doodie, Eric and Coos for the drive home!
So tired of nitwit “experts” saying after every question, “good question.”
Next question!
“Just don’t think they’re going to want to go 7x$8M or more for a guy who will be in his mid-to-late 30s at the end of the deal. ”
You would think they learned their lesson with the Girardi and Staal contracts. Seven years in this sport is way too long, especially since the penalty to get out from under that contract is so great if they decline after a couple of years. I think they did it right with Shattenkirk, only tying him up for 4 years.
4 years of Shattenkirk’s defense is too much too lol
Ave are such a perfect trading partner on so many fronts plus they just landed Kerfoot and now have too many centers and not enough Dmen
Cmon Commish Gorton, put down the bottle and pick up the phone.
Ave = Avs
Boomer announces on the air his partner was arrested
Awkward…
TomK, really!!! Skjei, kreider and a 3rd for Duchene, thank goodness your not the rangers GM.
By the way, Carton getting arrested couldn’t happen to a better guy. I couldn’t stand that A-hole.
Eli- I wish you the best. Be safe.

Such BS
Which part?
“4 years of Shattenkirk’s defense is too much too lol”
I agree, but it’s much better than 6 or 7 years.
Buch is hampered by the smaller rink, yet can’t find anyone to defend in the D zone. Riddle me.
STILL, STILL Kreider and Miller are very very often lost in the D zone. Are they terminally stupid or are the coaches useless? My guess is that it’s the coaching.
I single them out, but they aren’t the only ones.
Coos
You can’t say that the coaches are useless if you don’t know what they do 😉
Aha aha…
Do you know what they do? #useless
doo doo
Cross Check Charlie
Oh, for sure! Tho, I think after the second year, people will be wishing for Danny G back and Shatty will be the enemy number one.
Too many teams, too diluted talent.
Eli-Be safe.
TommyG- if you’re gonna rip me, read my effin post. That’s not what I said.
Skjei alone apparently isn’t enough to get Duchene and we’d have to shed salary to make it work. Sakic wouldn’t want Zucc. Staal wouldn’t go.
I floated:
Skjei and Kreider for
Duchene and a 3rd.
It still might not be a deal worth doing. You could change the 3rd to a 2nd, but Duchene is a 2 year rental coming off a bad season.
Time for Kreider to achieve superstar status. Get it done!
Duch is overrated. Anything more than ONE roster player and late pick is a robbery.
I agree CCCP would not give up more than a roster player & pick. Sakic wants a Kings ransom in His case GM stands for Gone Mental!
Boomer and CARP! I already texted WFAN.
The guy brilliantly chirping Toews here is Kris Versteeg. Pretty funny.

Eli be safe brother.
C3, don’t be late tonight!
Oh, crap…. sorry James! Totally forgot! I see now that I had first pick overall?! who in the fugg is David Johnson?!
BTW!
We Did Everything But Win: Former New York Rangers Remember the Emile Francis Era (1964-1976) BY George Grimm.
GET A COPY OR TWO…OR THREE.
Yahoo fantasy sports suck!!!!
Apparently i got a B grade in the NFL Fantasy draft yet i have weaknesses at WR & RB – isnt that half my team? Bad bad auto draft apart from A-Rodg, Gronk and Denver.
Wish i’d stayed up till 3am now!!
Interesting tweak to the video replay rule this season: if a team asks to review an offside call on a goal and gets it wrong, they are punished with a 2-minute penalty. So you could end up losing a goal and then end up on the wrong end of a powerplay. No pressure!!
Good morning, boneheads!
UK, I believe teams will not be allowed to call a timeout after icing is another change. About time. Some other minor changes…
Wow! That’s going to test Dan Girardi’s stamina!!
Just checked…George’s book gets released 21st September here.
It’s available here, but Amazon shipping is in 2-4 weeks
I pre-ordered my copy of George’s book from Amazon and got it yesterday. I will be craking it open over the weekend and will probably end up finishing it in one sitting.
Goaltender interference reviews should be initiated at the ref’s or the league’s discretion and nobody should be penalized, since everybody acknowledges they are
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That makes too much sense, Rob 🙂
Bought the book yesterday, the old fashion way, at a book store. Halfway through. Very good, though not what I expected.
What’s a book store? Lol
George Parros to head the Department of Player (we don’t care about their) Safety. I hope he can make some type of difference.
I figured they would just give Raffi Torres or Matt Cooke the gig.
