Moments ago, the Rangers announced that they would be buying out the remainder of Girardi’s contract. I find the move a bit surprising considering that they had not asked him to waive his NMC to help facilitate either a move to Vegas or a trade elsewhere. That being said, he had to come off the books somehow, and it was going to be expensive in either assets, dollar,s or both. In this case, just dollars, and a lot of them. Girardi’s buyout costs are as follows (via CapFriendly):
| SEASON | SALARY | INITIAL CAP HIT | ACTUAL COST | SAVINGS | BUYOUT CAP HIT |
| 2017-18 | $4,000,000 | $5,500,000 | $1,111,111 | $2,888,889 | $2,611,111 |
| 2018-19 | $3,000,000 | $5,500,000 | $1,111,111 | $1,888,889 | $3,611,111 |
| 2019-20 | $3,000,000 | $5,500,000 | $1,111,111 | $1,888,889 | $3,611,111 |
| 2020-21 | $0 | $0 | $1,111,111 | -$1,111,111 | $1,111,111 |
| 2021-22 | $0 | $0 | $1,111,111 | -$1,111,111 | $1,111,111 |
| 2022-23 | $0 | $0 | $1,111,111 | -$1,111,111 | $1,111,111 |
His buyout hit in year 1 is nearly the exact amount of money the Rangers would save if the reports regarding Kevin Klein retiring prove correct. Years 2 and 3 will be very painful, but the last three are pretty manageable.
Girardi was a great story (undrafted free agent) and warrior for the franchise, but his blood and guts play clearly has taken its toll on him. Feel free to hare some of your favorite Girardi stories and/or jubilation that he will be off the team.

Good morning, boneheads!
What did I miss?
Good morning ILB. C3 broke the blog, Wicky is a bully and Drouin should be a Ranger. That’s the last 24 hours in a nut shell (Skjeil?)
😄😄😄
Now Rangers fans want to get rid of Stepan and sign soon to be 39 year old Joe Thornton
can’t make the crap up lol
I saw the bully part…Amazing how people are capable of judging a person they have never met by reading their blog posts…
Drouin for Sergachev? Jury is still out. And before everyone says how amazing Yzerman is as a GM, let’s wait until he’s done signing Johnson, Palat, adding a couple of D-men, and getting a back up goalie. Also, let’s wait until his team makes the playoffs next time.
I think everyone who comments here almost always offers a pertinent and interesting viewpoint or insight, be it right or wrong. The few malcontents who don’t inevitably fade away into insignificance.
What in hell has happened to Jason Day? Buy him out!
Wicky at 2:01pm – If you remind me after the draft (or at least after I have my three articles done) I will look into it. I would say there are teams that could match the 1st round drought, not so sure about teams going as long as the Rangers without having picks in the first three rounds.
Alex – You might get the Rangers drafting a d-man (a good one remains to be seen). I am leaning that way for the Rangers with Hague or Timmins (he’s a righty!), but I would kick them and other d-man to the curb if Eeli Tolvanen would ever drop. He is a 5-10/180 pound winger how has played the last two years in the USHL and has pretty much averaged a point a game there and in all of the junior tourneys. He also fits in with the Mass. Mob with the Rangers because he will be going to Boston College.
No thanks on Radulov. No thanks on Thornton, but I do understand the idea of a one year stop gap with him if they trade Stepan.
Ranger fans are knowledgeable.
About iPhones and what restaurants are hot right now.
That’s what I’ve said (several times, I know). I would trade Stepan if it meant they would get Tavares next year, with Thornton as the one year fill-in. Otherwise, they really need to get a C back.
C3 where was that gem? The Stepan issue is his contract. Not going to start the debate on if they could get a “better” player at center but certainly someone who brings a different dynamic (and does so better than Derick Brassard)..
Gravy have you been trolling my Yelp account? 🙂
I think preparing for Tavares is risky business until you know for a fact he’s done w the Islanders organization and is interested in being a Ranger. With that said I think you do everything possible to get him once there’s any indication of those things. Problem is Stepan has to be moved now.
Wicky, so Drouin, with one year of mid-50 point production is worth 5.5M, but Stepan with 7 is overpaid at 6.5M? 🙂
If they trade Stepan, I agree they need to get a center back. One other option would be to get a good winger back, and then move Miller to center. Of course what they really need us to get a Dman back.
Theoretically they could play Miller at center and or bump Lindberg to full time third line services instead of making a commitment to a top 6 C if the plan is to bring Tavares in next year
Uh oh BDL and I are vibin’ today.
Here’s something else we haven’t discussed much – would you resign Nash for a couple of years at a reasonable cap hit after this season? Or let him walk?
James, absolutely. What I’m saying (not clearly) is that if I had a crystal ball knowing that Tavares was the end game, then I trade Stepan for D or whatever the best return is. But with that unknown, I wouldn’t want to go with Miller as a C because I think his game is better suited for wing.
I’d have to see the FA class next year, but in a bubble, I’d consider re-signing Nash in the 3/$18M range. Don’t think I’d go above $6M AAV, especially considering the dead cap space they have to carry with Girardi.
Habs won that deal unless Driuin’s attitude holds him back. Be interesting to see how he reacts to Julien, who is a defense-first coach. It is clear that Galchenyuk does not fit, and that a guy like Stepan does fit the kind of player Julien likes. However, I would rather see Step go to MN for Dumba.
Good morning Bonehead GM’s welcome to Friday. I understand the need to get a center if Opie is traded. But the priority is still to fix the Blue line. If we don’t we are wasting what’s left of Lundqvists rapidly closing window. Could Miller handle the center position? I don’t think AV>Avoiding Victory would give him the chance!
I don’t know what the Rangers relationship with Nash is like. His situation will be like Eric Staal’s. He is going to get paid a lot less going forward and may have to hit UFA status after 7/1 to find out where the market is. If they offer him half what he is currently making will he sign without finding out if anyone will offer him more? Tough situation. Because of the cap they can’t overpay, but, he doesn’t want to leave money on the table.
If Dumba comes here, will he live in Dumbo or is he too dumb to know how to cross the East River?
No way Nash on his current output trajectory gets $6m per – will need a big production year; get the sense he may not want to play much longer.
.
Center minus Step (and prob Grabber to Vegas) could/should be:
1C – Zika w/ The and Miller
2C – Haze w/ Nash and VC
3C – Oscar w/ Butch and Zucc
4C – UFA Vet or Boo if he gets a chance w/ Fast & Glass (I keed)
.
Haze needs to become a top 6 center
ORF, you’re right. And next year probably isn’t going to be one of those year’s where a guy like Ladd strikes gold because of the lack of top end W talent on the market. Free agent class is much deeper at forward for ’18 especially on the wing. Nash isn’t going to be the first guy targeted. Still going to be in demand though.
Gravy just to give you a bit of an idea of ufa wingers next summer- names like Atkinson, Neal, JVR, Hornqvist and the list goes on.
Sergachev going to be a top pair stud. Don’t sell Tampa short
The roster has plenty of forward depth if Step and or Grabber goes. If the young guns can take the next step and the defense can make a break out pass…
No chance taveres comes here. Stop.
Tampa will be hamstrung by Stamkos’ injury proclivity and Cally contract as they have to sign Johnson, Palat and Sustr but have $17M in cap space.
Lindberg is as good as gone. I wouldn’t put him on any line combos for next year.
Would have to think, if Stevie Y could do out it again, he would not have signed Tax Free. That contract has cost them Druion so far, and it could end up costing them others.
Why wouldn’t Taveras come to the Rangers. Loyalty to the Islanders? The team with no home, and no apparent direction? The team who in Taveras career has made the playoffs twice? I would think he would come running if he got the chance.
lol Eric already losing sleep over next summer’s ufa pool
Miller is the one guy they could move to center that would actually be worse at faceoffs than Stepan. They would need to cryogenically engineer a 4C center out of parts of Rod Brind’Amour, Ron Francis, and Craig MacTavish to have a chance at winning a draw once in awhile.
BDL you’re right. But I convinced myself Stamkos wanted to come here last year too. Plus I’m not over the Michael Stone thing. Just can’t afford any more heart break
James, that’s a pretty impressive class. I’d be inclined to let Nash walk.
Didn’t even mention Evander Kane (don’t tell Eric) or Mark Stone, Gravy. best UFA class in recent memory. All younger than Nash and all going to get paid.
Yes, I’d be happy grabbing just about any of those guys. And Tavares 🙂
They sure picked a good year to have $3M+ in dead cap space.
I would love to add Atkinson to the team just because it would drive Wicky insane. The 25+ goals would be cool too.
Evander Kane sign me up now.
I also fail to see why Tavares wouldn’t want to come here. Doesn’t have to uproot his life, gets a chance to play for a real team in a real building that contends every year.
Think about all the times he must say to himself…”Good God what the crap is Snow going to do next to submarine my team.” He’s going to run like hell away from the Islanders.
I just think that since this game is a business and you’ll have a 27 year old franchise player looking for his career contract there’s nothing that makes it a no brainer. 65-80 points a year don’t come easy in this league. I’d imagine teams could offer up enough to make up-rooting his life not so big of a deal.
Tavares>Penguins Book it!
Gravy
3.6 million for years 2 and 3
but at least we won’t have Glass in minors at 1/2 mill
teams and agents planning for next lockout. note dip in 4th year. not as dramatic as what some others will do.
Pierre LeBrunVerified account @PierreVLeBrun
Year by year breakdown of Drouin contract:
6.5M (1M SB), 5.5M, 5.5M, 4.5M (2M SB), 5.5M and 5.5M.
Unfortunately it doesn’t seem you can give incentive laden contracts in the NHL because of the hard cap. Because of that, I would let Nash walk for anything more than $4 per year, max 3yr. We can talk about how great all the other parts of his game have been (when on the ice) but the bottom line is you get paid those kind of big dollars to score goals and he has only done that in one season with the NYR. Nothing against him, he’s a nice guy and handles himself professionally, but this is a business.
thank God we didn’t sign tax free
Joe Smith @TBTimes_JSmith
#TBLightning Yzerman declined to say whether they asked Ryan Callahan to waive NM clause for expansion. Would have til 5 tday to waive
Gravy
I wasn’t lauding the Drouin $$$$ by any stretch. I was having a convo with doodie, I think, quite a wile back and we were talking about how it seems the ” going rate” for skill forwards seems to be about $1 mil per 10 points scored.
Yes, I think Stepan is overpaid.
Is Grandma Tax Free still alive?
Anthony
Sorry, I wasn’t implying you had to do that research. I was more musing about the topic. But, if you do….TYIA.
BDL, James, and I seem to be all aboard the vibin’ train today!
Any odds on how many trades take place between today and the deadline tomorrow? Over 3? None? 100?
This is business, it’s not personal!
I do my vibin with the ladies!
I wouldn’t sign Nash with your pen
Dollars aside, Nash can play for me any time. At the right price and younger, Cally too.
Wicky, don’t be a bully 🙂
Wick I think we’ll see some action over the next 24 hours and I think we’ll see some things go down over draft weekend too. While I’m starting to put my full trust into Gorton’s decisions I’ll admit the irrational fan on my shoulder is getting kind of antsy.
Guessing Galchenyuk will be traded by the conclusion of the draft weekend if they’re going to move him.
Wicky’s boys were trapped on a hillside
The battle raging all around
The sergeant cried, “We’ve got to hang on, boys!
We’ve got to hold this piece of ground.”
“I need a volunteer to ride up
And bring us back some extra men.”
And Wicky’s hand was up in a moment
“You just tell me when!”
I heard his fiancee got a letter
That told how Wicky died that day
The letter said that he was a hero,
But on Wicky’s stone it say:
A hero is only a sangwich, but I did it my way!
Too many crazy names in this league. From now on, I root for only Miller and Smith.
Hog Posh about Yzerman not asking Cally to waive his NMC btw. Of course he did- he’d be a bad GM if he didn’t make that request. Callahan is 32, injury prone and making 6.4 million dollars a year. All that for 32 points in 91 games over the last two seasons. If it weren’t for that first rounder, we’re still winning that St. Louis deal and he’s been retired for 2 seasons.
James, I’m going to see some action in the next 24 hours and u can Book It!
I wouldn’t pay Nash with Dolan’s Dollar.
Papa Bug’s takin’ a little trip to the bada-bing!
Coos how’s the recovery going btw?
When I reflect on Nash’s tenure with the Rangers I’ll remember:
.
The wide open net in OT during the finals against the Kings…
.
His useless weak wristers from the widest most ridiculous angles or from just inside the blue line…
.
His mostly eschewing the dirty areas of the ice in the o-zone..
.
Lucic standing over him daring him to get up in the PO’s verse Boston..
.
His extremely short shifts…
.
His spin-o-rama back hand move which he used often but rarely put the puck on net with..
.
His ridiculous cap-hit.
No fond memories of back checking? And you call yourself a fan??
Papa don’t forget the first period breakaway in game 7 vs TB
So Brooks tweeted earlier that Gorton’s asking price for Stepan is a first pair right Dman.
@james Gotta put your ask a little high to start any negotiation…
i think they’re probably kicking the tyres on a Step trade to see if its worth it before 1st July, because then he’s a Ranger for at least 2 years if not more. If the return is a top pair righty D, they are a bit harder to find and they probably hope Zibanejad will usurp Step as #1C in the next 2 years anyway.
I suspect Gorton is kicking tires on everything. It’s much more complicated with the expansion draft.
Usurp? Sounds Modern Hindi 🙂
Luckily Gorton is much higher on Stepan than some of us, it appears. He has time, no reason to trade him for low return. Has to be a hockey trade, or I’d keep him.
For people who asked before, one year rule of not being able to resign a player by a team that buys him out applies to the compliance buyout only.
With the protected list set they should only make a trade that will make the team better unlike a few teams (Anaheim) who could lose a top 4 D for nothing so need to trade or lose someone who would normally get them a great package in return (Vatanen), but in this instance might just get them a pick and prospect
Breaking: Stepan and first rounder for Phaneuf and Turris.
Funny CCCP I am still laughing as I type this!
What do you mean I’m funny? … a little f’ed up maybe, but I’m funny how, I mean funny like I’m a clown, I amuse you?
This is personal business. It’s not…
Uh
How does that go again?
On Nash, you’re also not remembering
Trying to beat 2 or 3 defenders without even thinking of passing (Emphasis on trying, no emphasis on thinking).
Giving up the puck in the corners or along the wall anytime someone gave him a nasty look.
Having a one-timer that invariably found the middle of the goalie.
ILB, I don’t think anyone here hopes Gorton dumps Stepan just for the sake of getting rid of him.
Turris played like an All-Star against Ranger centers including and especially Stepan, who had a hard time keeping up with him. He (Turris) was invisible for most of the Penguin series ( except maybe on the PP). Obviously, the Rangers have a huge gap to bridge before they are able to compete with Pittsburg in a playoff series.
Wicky – No apologies needed. Just wanted to let youse guys know I am on the case, but it will take some time. I have to admit that I seem to have caught the writing bug for the first time in a looong time. I guess between the Rangers having a 1st round pick (at least for now) and having come to terms with what has happened in my life, I have the juices back.
I will be spending the weekend putting the finishing touches on three draft articles. One gives a brief (well, brief for me) history of the Rangers drafts at #21. The second is the Rangers Draft Preview (I even have a couple of sleepers for late in the draft). The third is the Mock First Round. I might do a Mock Second depending on time.
If anyone has suggestions on the Rangers pick I am all ears (guess I should say eyes). Also, if you promise not tell anyone, I am willing to e-mail a copy of the International Scouting Service 2017 Draft Guide.
Recovery good, James, thank you. Wedge from the woods back to the fairway, seven iron to the middle and 2 putts. I’ll take the bogey. 🙂
Coos, didn’t know you weren’t feeling well. Hope u r doing better.
Gracias, P B eddie
Minnesota has to deal either Brodin, or Dumba. Gorton needs to be all over this.

nice girardi video
take a seat baby
Anthony
Congrats my friend on getting the juices back. Enjoy!
Wicky broke the blog.
‘Zona in on Stepan. Maybe Connor Murphy is a target? Solid young righty D who’s signed to a pretty friendly long term deal. We’d need more Though – he’s not in the Trouba/Vatanen category, or even Dumba
go get em kid
I would definitely consider Step, 1C, for Murphy + something. I paid a lot of attention to not Daniel early last season for fantasy purposes. Solid Dman who’s going to get better. Good call mentioning him, Dave.
Maybe the Arizona target OEL? Trades expected before 3 deadline today. With Stepan the deadline in July 1, so today may not be his day.
Thanks Booby. Not the sexiest name out there, and Murphy doesn’t (at least currently) fit the bill as someone who can slot in next to McDonagh right away. If they’re dead set on getting rid of Step, Murphy + R1 (I would take next years…this draft is bleh) wouldn’t be terrible. Or Murphy plus one of their good youngins.
If Step won’t be moved unless we get a first pairing RD right now – this trade prob doesn’t happen.
I’d LOVE to get OEL, but realistically we’d need to give up wayyy more then we have available.
Personally I think if a trade has legs (with Arizona or anyone else) it happens before the freeze today at 3. Step has until July 1, but if we make zero moves today, we miss an opportunity to protect whatever D we acquire, plus use Stepan’s slot on Grabner or Lindberg.
I might also watch for a Raanta trade today.
If nothing happens, we’re going to be making it rain picks and prospects on Vegas to make them pick Holden. But if they think they can get more return on guys after the expansion on Draft Day, sure. I trust gorton.
Sounds like Holden is going to be protected. If it’s Murphy, there would have to be more coming the Rangers way.
First article this morning from the coyotes beat is very pro-Step, says that Strome and assets should be made available.
Honestly if they could get Strome and Murphy…jeez Louise. Toss Cody Franson or Mike Stone a 2-year deal as a stop-gap while Murph grows into the role.
Though my one concern would be…does Murphy project as a first pair guy? If Strome is made available it’s a moot point, because getting a center prospect like that is something we’ve been dying for.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.fiveforhowling.com/platform/amp/2017/6/16/15823434/nhl-arizona-coyotes-new-york-rangers-derek-stepan-trade-rumors
Good morning, boneheads!
Happy 26th, Wicky!
If Dylan strome is in play you have to think about acquiring.
The guy in this article doesn’t sound like Coyotes have enough to acquire Stepan. It’s either he overestimates Stepan or we underestimate him. Both?
Also have to say – Stepan is one of my favorite Rangers. He has his faults, but he’s a talented, fairly-consistent two-way center who you KNOW will leave and start pitting 90 points a year.
The face offs are an issue. I skating as well (though I think he gets from point A to point B just fine). He had a pretty disappointing post season.
But I also think we tend to be hard on our players. He never put up the.l numbers that would’ve shut us all up. He also plays in a division that boasts centers like Crosby, Malkin, Tavares, Giroux, Backstrom (side note: not a Backstrom fan…if you switched him and Derek, Derek would be universally praised as a Selke candidate and star, and we’d be bitching while Backstrom pots 45 points playing with Nash)
anyway, On a team that has a need to shake up the core, and has some big holes to fill on D and on the farm in general – I endorse any trade involving Stepan that makes us better.
Good point ILB. It’s always fascinating to see what the other side thinks, right? I love Stepan, but I’d be hard-pressed to find a team that “didn’t have enough” to trade for him.
The article also states that the Rangers don’t have any “bad contracts” that they can absorb to drive down the price tag. Which is definitely their MO. And I guess when you think about that in terms of cap hits sans salaries like Datsyuk, we don’t. But I can think of a rough contract or two that I’d love to be out from under…
So what’s this Arizona stuff? Step for Doan and a pick? Lol
Mark Pysyk a decent trade target if Florida can’t keep him. Young righty, a modern-day defensive dman who can skate and carry the puck.
Stepan Miller and first 21 pick to Colorado for McKinnon and Barrie.
I wish Erik. That’s not enough for Kate Mackinnon solo.
If we want both – Kreider or miller is in the deal. And you know what? I might be down. I’d give up our R1 this year, to be honest. Late R1er in a weak draft.
Sorry – misread and didn’t see Miller in your post.
Was Step’s public hollering at Hank the kiss of death?
Have a feeling Stepan moves at draft weekend not today by 3pm
Maybe so Eric. Especially if the right deal isn’t in place. There’s really no NEED to get rid of him.
I just think that there are some big opportunities in the way of young right-shooting defensemen that are presenting themselves solely due to the expansion draft. Deals for Dumba (Bowling for Burgers?), Vatanen, possibly Ellis or Trouba – those go away at 3pm today. Arizona and Carolina are ones with legs that have a window open till June 30th (as well a dozen other options that haven’t even occurred to us because we’re focusing on the expansion restrictions).
No interest in anyone from AZ roster. Larson best Dman is a sieve.
Seek trade elsewhere
new thread please
regarding the arizona article just how slow is hanzal?
“What these numbers show is that Stepan could fill the same puck controlling role Hanzal provided, while giving Arizona more speed and puck skill in arguably the most important position on the ice
Step with 90 pts – officially spit out coffee on that one only to be followed by NYR with no bad contracts – Staalled?
.
Step and Staal for Murphy, Strome
Have to agree with Dave. No need to jettison Step. Gorton definitely won’t make that move unless he sees gold in them thar hills.
If the Coyotes idea of a 1C was Martin Hanzal, no wonder they’re salivating over Step.
Staal would do well in ‘zona.
Both Buch and Staal would do better with the bigger international rink.
NEW POST.
Interesting per LeBrun – teams waiting for unprotected lists so they can work out trades where Vegas picks the guy they want and then flips him.
FOR REALZ…
