Moments ago, the Rangers announced that they would be buying out the remainder of Girardi’s contract. I find the move a bit surprising considering that they had not asked him to waive his NMC to help facilitate either a move to Vegas or a trade elsewhere. That being said, he had to come off the books somehow, and it was going to be expensive in either assets, dollar,s or both. In this case, just dollars, and a lot of them. Girardi’s buyout costs are as follows (via CapFriendly):
| SEASON | SALARY | INITIAL CAP HIT | ACTUAL COST | SAVINGS | BUYOUT CAP HIT |
| 2017-18 | $4,000,000 | $5,500,000 | $1,111,111 | $2,888,889 | $2,611,111 |
| 2018-19 | $3,000,000 | $5,500,000 | $1,111,111 | $1,888,889 | $3,611,111 |
| 2019-20 | $3,000,000 | $5,500,000 | $1,111,111 | $1,888,889 | $3,611,111 |
| 2020-21 | $0 | $0 | $1,111,111 | -$1,111,111 | $1,111,111 |
| 2021-22 | $0 | $0 | $1,111,111 | -$1,111,111 | $1,111,111 |
| 2022-23 | $0 | $0 | $1,111,111 | -$1,111,111 | $1,111,111 |
His buyout hit in year 1 is nearly the exact amount of money the Rangers would save if the reports regarding Kevin Klein retiring prove correct. Years 2 and 3 will be very painful, but the last three are pretty manageable.
Girardi was a great story (undrafted free agent) and warrior for the franchise, but his blood and guts play clearly has taken its toll on him. Feel free to hare some of your favorite Girardi stories and/or jubilation that he will be off the team.

Sad day indeed, but ultimately, the correct move.
Modified Repost:
James, I know what you’re saying. I think trading for Fowler would make the draft seem worse, in hindsight, especially if it wound up being a Vesey-type going the other way. I’d just prefer to trade for any other defenseman.
I will always have nothing but the utmost respect for Girardi. The real tragedy hear is the team just became a lot less handsome.
thanks to Dan Girardi …. good Ranger …always gave his all for team. Best of luck going forward for him and his family. Hope he lands somewhere and succeeds….Torts probably calling him now
alex I don’t want to upset the Naslund poster on your wall, but again, I never made him out to be a failure. I just said he was in decline and headed for a buyout. An inevitable conclusion that was widely reported. Instead he retired.
so if Klein leaves for Europe, there isn’t an RD currently on the roster. Girardi buyout equates to 2.89 million of cap space freed up. With Klein’s contract off the books that’s about 5.7 million.
wrong doodie
was 4 million cap hit not 5 million.
24 goals. he was not the failure you paint him to be.
we’re not going to agree on this.
I agree, Gravy. The first three guys on that list (Trouba, Wideman, Manson) are much more desirable IMO.
kampfer is right d on roster
My late wife Roe is looking down and is not pleased because Danny was one of her favorite players. Say what you want, the guy gave everything he had and was a darn good player for an undrafted free agent signing. I am a bit surprised that they didn’t try and move him, even if they had to retain some salary – anything to get those years two and three cap hits down.
I would have to guess that Jeff Gorton did some investigating and found it probably wasn’t worth dealing him in terms of what the Rangers would have to retain in salary and pay in a “bribe” to get someone to take the contract. It could be a case of Gorton being a good guy and letting Girardi have a full say in where he plays, but I am thinking the pickings were slim to none on the market.
With the Rangers luck, he signs with the Penguins and helps them to a three-peat 🙁
Does this mean they have enough cap space to offer Shattenkirk a contract they’ll need to buyout in three years?
Youse guys have to get over this obsession with having an even split among the defensemen. In a perfect world, you want three lefties and three rightys. If this were a perfect worls, the Rangers would have won the Stanley Cup. I am not going to take a lesser righty-shot on defense just to have a balance.
At some point in their careers, most lefty-shots have played right defense. The oddity is when you have to play a righty-shot on the left side because they have limited experience doing it (probably only the PP and maybe some PK).
Jeff Gorton’s job is to get the best six defenseman he can regardless of how they shoot (other than making sure they can hit the net with their shot).
I’m fighting back tears from the news on Girardi. A true Ranger. Gave everything he had and then some. Was treated poorly by a good portion of the fan base the last two seasons. End of an era.
Stepan’s name being thrown around in trade talks prominently according to McKenzie.
5.7….really not that much for a team in need of two top 6 at the moment. Wondering if Derek Stepan is the next guy in Gorton’s cross hairs.
wow good timing Gravy lol.
Thanks for everything, Dan! True Ranger!
http://i67.tinypic.com/2dtwrav.png
Anthony, let me be clear- I’m not talking about 3 right handed guys down the right side. I’m talking about players that can play the right side effectively. I don’t care if they hold their stick with their feet. Staal hasn’t done it well neither has Skjei. Holden can’t do it, McD isn’t going to do it. So yeah
A lot of dead cap space tho… ugh.
BDL, I’m saddened by it too. in the end he was the victim of his own toughness and a crappy contract dished out by Sather.
The end of a snow angels era.
Gotcha James. I mistook RD as a call for all righties.
You shouldn’t want players who hold their sticks with their feet because all of their goals would be disallowed because of a “distinct kicking motion” 🙂 🙂
C3, that’s what I’m saying. Doodie is right (hate saying that) about this buyout basically erases the money freed up if Klein retires. Stepan’s contract is the ticking time bomb. Gotta hope they can move him.
While this was necessary, it is still a sad day. This man gave his all to the club for 11 years. for all the clowns and goldbrickers we have had to watch over the years, this guy was all heart and guts. I hope he finds a job with a good team and finds success.
Danny G had some real good years for this team gave it all even when the tank was empty. Hate to see him go this way but it was necessary. I’m sure he will always be one of Ovechkins favorite memories!
If he still wants to play, I imagine he will find a cheap one year deal somewhere. If he doesn’t want to play, I imagine there’s a front office job waiting for him here whenever he wants it.
by the way- what are the expansion draft implications here? are the technically still in compliance? can they protect Grabner or Raanta now?
Gravy
at least it would be compliance buyout for Shattenkirk after next lockout.
And I’m sure he’s talking that over with his wife and family, Doodie. At 33 years old, he’s already put his body through enough trauma that you’d think there’s consideration in regards to his quality of life. especially with young children.
James, yes, they are still in compliance, no they cannot protect either of those guys in addition to the players already being protected. They can, however, choose to protect Nick Holden, although doing so all but guarantees it’s a forward or Raanta that is selected.
James
has no effect on protecting goalie or forward.
will allow them to protect an acquired defenseman or smith if they sign him in next week
Can Vegas choose not to select a player from a team?
Girardi’s Statement:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the New York Rangers organization for giving me the opportunity to fulfill my childhood dream of playing in the National Hockey League.” Girardi wrote in a lengthy release posted to the team’s website. “I would also like to thank James Dolan, Glen Sather, Jim Schoenfeld, Jeff Gorton, John Rosasco, Jason Vogel, all of the coaches and front office staff, Jim Ramsay and his amazing training staff, the equipment staff, and all the Madison Square Garden employees for making my past 11 years so special.”
Doodie
if klein retires and we don’t sign a dman i don’t think we can protect holden since have to make 1 dman available with certain playing time
Girardi signs with Islanders. Islanders win the cup next year.
Feel bad or not Danny G is a winner here. Contract from the Rangers PLUS new contract of its way AND change of scenery… Win-win for him.
of=on
Thanks, Doodie/Alex. I would make the assumption that they are either trying to get Smith locked up or they have a deal in place for someone. Guess we’ll have to see.
ps- Doodie if they acquire Duchene and Barrie for Stepan and a package of guys I want you to reverse your decision on best trade scenario contest!
Hags played w broken ankle. so despite what sullivan said he was not a healthy scratch

Matt Puempel’s deal with #NYR is for one year at $725,000.
Tom Potty is available.
It wasn’t very long ago when Giroux referred to Girardi as the most underrated player in the league. Man was he great at shutting down elite offensive players.
I think the Rangers would prefer Holden goes in the expansion draft.
Tom Potty is available.

said E3 from the can.
Such a dumb move buying out Girardi.
–
Great move dumping stepan in a deal though.
52 looks familiar
I find it very hard to believe, but the rumors are still out there that the Rangers are going to leave Stepan unprotected. Maybe the Rangers know Vegas won’t take him and it would allow the Rangers to protect AVs son.
CCCP- I worry, (it’s what I do), about the same thing with Girardi signing with a rival and winning it all.
Norm said it best when he said that
Girardi (and Staal) travelled to MTL (round 1-2017) via time machine. So true!
I still think this was the right move. Thanks Dan Girardi for giving us everything you had and then some! He has the scars to prove it.
Is it safe to be here?
Losing G is a punch in that naïve part of me that still wishes the NYR could win it all with the Torts guys that we fell in love with
Wow! I’m missing all the fun. Will return back here full time after we go through the byfuglien residency review inspection tomorrow.
Meantime, goodbye to one of true Rangers from the current era. Heart and soul of this team, definitely gave it all. Let’s hope he’s remembered for that.
he’ll be remembered for winning the 2018 Cup with Anaheim
and what happened to Girardi and Staawlh in round two 2017? Time machine broke?
sigh….
Finally a chance for Sangs!
the Libyans stole the flux capacitor
Right move but sad day. The Girardi of old was what exemplified a heart and soul player. It was sad see the decline. Just don’t sign with a metro team.
5th in metro book it
BANJ?!
CCCP-exactly! Which is why this was the right move.
CCCP – Vegas has to take one player per team.
Alex – Holden is comfortably within the game playing requirement.
It is interesting that the NHL didn’t put in game requirements for goalies. It would have made some interesting trades as some teams would need to trade for veterans – or they would have had to play third goalies more (depending on what the game limit would have been). Example: Edmonton icould loose their top prospect goalie in Laurent Brossoit.
Remember Vegas needs spend at least 60 percent of the cap. Maybe they would take a stepan left unprotected.
So are we going 7-3-1 still with Holden being Kept. Have to think smith gets resigned by Saturday morning before 5pm deadline.
Fat Guy! I was eating these delicious cinnamon buns and thinking of you… by looking at myself in a mirror.
AnthonyM
my remark about holden was that someone said we can protect him now. i said we could not since then nobody would meet the requirement on our d if we don’t sign smith or make a trade.
G not making the Ducks defense, even if they lose a guy to expansion. Maybe he gets signed by Vegas and they make him an Alt. Captain.
So will the Rangers now protect McDonough, Staal and Holden? (Unless they obtain another dman prior to expansion draft)
Alex, while true, Klein’s retirement will almost certainly wait until AFTER the draft.
Another way this affects expansion: it opens up the possibility of trading a forward for a defenseman.
Blue warrior who gave his all, never fleet of foot, frequently dove in front of puck with wild abandon. One of the stalwarts of the Torts’ Era who was gifted a great deal for him but not the team from Uncle Glennie. End of an Era.
.
Please Staal next…
I think Stepan gets taken in the expansion draft if he’s exposed, so more likely he is traded or protected.
Signs with Caps and wins Cup; Blog implodes…
Klein with moving truck in front of house today; playing in Swiss next year. A lot of grit leaving the back line.
Good thing Shatty is out there…
Gravy, not only would he get taken, he would likely be their best player. I’m telling you: their roster is going to suck.
Also possible they re-sign Smith and protect him.
Gravy, sure, but no rush to do that. They could just wait until after the draft and leave him alone.
You know who else’s roster would suck if Stepan got taken? That said, I’ll still be OK if they sign Thornton for a year then Tavares next year if it happens.
Leaving Stepan unprotected instead of trading him is a bad asset management. Unless Gorton has a deal with McPhee that prevents Stepan being taken.
Sad day, I will miss G. Honestly think NYR could have lived with him another year and should have tried to move Staal. A buyout next year economically much more palatable. And NYR should definitely get him back in the organization at some point.
Oh true, for some reason I thought this was taking place around July 1st.
“Leaving Stepan unprotected instead of trading him is a bad asset management. Unless Gorton has a deal with McPhee that prevents Stepan being taken.”
Even then, why not protect him and make deal around protecting the player you would protect in Stepan’s place.
Long story short, there’s zero chance he is exposed, and if he is exposed, management should immediately be fired.
“Girardi, 33, played 788 games with the Rangers, plus another 122 in the playoffs. The 33-year-old from Welland, Ontario, played through countless injuries, including three cracked ribs during the most recent postseason run, which ended in a second-round loss to the Senators.”
900 games. I’m not sure how I missed that bit of info on the cracked ribs but I clearly did. Guy could get hit by a truck and keep walking.
Doodie
i think we sign smith in next week or trade for a dman. i don’t think holden is worth protecting even though he would be ok as 3rd pair d. we will lose a forward or raanta not holden unless we make it worth it for vegas to take holden.
i really hope we don’t go for shattenkirk in july.
I wouldn’t want to protect Holden either, but if he’s going to be here next year, you don’t want to send a message that you think he’s worthless, both to Holden (if you’re stuck with him for next year) and to the rest of the league (for trade purposes)
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 2 min ago
Rangers sign Chris Neil. One year deal worth 2.3 mill
Surprising move for the NYR
CCCP, you’re 17 days too early.
You can bet the beach house that his agent was asked to waive the NMC and declined, but for obvious reasons, you are unlikely to hear about it.
Just practicing, Doodie 🙂
Danny thanks Dolan? Proves he’s still suffering from post traumatic concussion syndrome.
IMHO, both Danny and Staal have been grossly over-rated for some time now.
Thanks him for OKing the ridiculous extension he got in 2014.
I think it is sad he is being bought out such a team player. #Imo. Staal play fell more than girardi. He played with acracked kneecap last season or for maybe 2 seasons
I think it is sad he is being bought out such a team player. #Imo. Staal play fell more than girardi. He played with acracked kneecap last season or for maybe 2 seasons
Msybe he will end up in Columbus with torts as defense assistant
Just read this on facebook and I think it’s a pretty good question. How does a guy who plays top line and top minutes got bought out? Poor team management?
Short Answer – bad contract; old age; declining performance
cooscoos
all those blocked shots and concussions had a huge effect
bad contract; old age; declining performance
—–
Duh…then why was he playing TOP minutes? that is the question…
You want an even shorter answer? Coach.
CCCP
the rangers have 1 first pair d. someone has to be his partner. most on right side were more suited to be 3rd pair. that is on the management team not the coach.
There’s another answer C3- if not him then who? (Whom?) haven’t had many options.
Shattenkirk isn’t the best dman available right now. Maybe the most attractive UFA come July 1. The more I see Gorton make moves the more trusting in becoming of his capabilities.
Wicky in a bad move realizing that Brady Skjei is officially the #2 Dman on this roster
I think it’s safe to say all bets are off at this point. The blue line is getting rebuilt and not retooled which means any forward may move in a trade
I thought a subsequent move needed to happen, but I was wrong. If they stand pat without making any moves signings, they’ll protect Klein (even if he’s retiring – he can delay that decision I believe) and expose Holden hoping he gets grabbed. Kampfer can and will be exposed but doesn’t meet the minimum requirement of 40 games this season or 70 across the past 2. So he can’t be the sole exposure.
I would prefer to take advantage of a team that doesn’t want to lose a solid young righty D for nothing, though. Bring on Jared Spurgeon!
I believe Girardi will be signed by a good NHL team at a discounted salary. …
Here’s hoping slow foot Derek!
2 things:
1. I never thought for a minute they’d buy him out because of years 2&3 on the buyout cap hit, I was wrong.
2. I’m nearly brought to tears reading his statement and Zucc’s Instagram and realising that #5, as much as he’s declined, will no longer be a ranger
I agree with Carp. He could be 3rd pair on a lot of teams at a reasonable $2m
Also Shatty is probably already apartment hunting in Manhattan
Teams that have invested big time in Corgis (Toronto, Arizona, Florida, TB come to mind) won’t touch him. But having said that, there will certainly be suitors looking for a 6/7
If he decides to play I agree w you Carp. A young team like Toronto or Edmonton would love to have a guy like him
Kind of heartbroken by the news. G was a warrior and everything that a hockey player and stand up human being should be. Right business move but it hurts. Standing O when he returns.
Henk from something called Instagram:
hank30nyr: For 11 years you have left everything you had in front of me. The way you competed and paid the price night in and night out inspired me more than you know. Will miss you on and off the ice. To me you are the definition of a warrior and I will ALWAYS appreciate what you have done for me and our team over the years. Thank you G!!!
these players are something else
OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators (@Senators) general manager Pierre Dorion announced that captain Erik Karlsson had surgery earlier today to repair torn tendons in his left foot.
“Erik underwent surgery earlier today in Charlotte, N.C, to repair torn tendons in his left foot. The tears, which occurred during this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, were found during an MRI as part of an extensive medical evaluation following the season.”
“The recovery from this surgery is expected to take approximately four months. This timeline leaves us hopeful that Erik will be fully recovered and healthy to start the 2017-18 regular season.”
I miss Girardi 🙁
Too soon?
Too late.
Nashville rumored to expose James Neal. Bad asset management?
Depends James. If keeping him and going 7-3-1 means needing to get 75 cents on the dollar for Ellis or Ekholm, its a tough choice.
Very true Dave.
Ok, let me see here…where to start….
Dumb dumb dumb move buying out Girardi and keeping staal
James,
This has zero to do with skjeL. I’ve stated numerous times I would keep him over staal in a heartbeat and still would. He’s going to be a solid 2nd pair NHL D man on the left, if he actually competes like he did in the post season along the wall. I keep him over staal regardless.
All that being said, if he’s the chip it takes to put a deal over the top to land a stud centre, top line fwd, or stud righty D…I send him packing immediately.
Your obsession with skjeL is bordering on clinical.
No one should be the least bit shocked when Girardi signs with the leafs and becomes an instant team leader on that young team.
Toronto and Edmonton just feel like the bestest fits for Girardi. I think I would instantly root for whichever team he lands on.
Wicky
it makes no sense to trade skjei for a wing.
Great piece, Carp. Probably my fav since taking on the new gig. Bittersweet to read, but very well done.
Alex
Lol. If skjel is the piece that puts a deal over the top for Galchenyuk (who plays wing currently) or another top line player, you absolutely move him to do it.
Rangers need top line players, we all see that.
I didn’t say deal him for for a 3rd line RW.
Geez dude, read posts more thoroughly.
wasnt Galchenyuk playing on a fourth line? why move a promising young dman for a 4th liner?
Lol
disagree Wicky
you have a thing against Skjei and I’m not even his biggest fan and even i can see that.
We need more help on defense not less. Everybody can see that.
Going to miss the G man…..as much as it was his time to go, doesn’t mean we won’t miss the Blockness Monster:
Wick don’t get grumpy. I know it sucks shoveling snow in June but I was just breaking your stones😒
If you want my serious opinion on why this buyout happened over buying out Staal I think it goes back to what I asked you yesterday before the Girardi news broke- to buy out Staal would leave the team with a couple addition years of dead cap space. and there may be more to it than we know in addition.
Daniel Girardi exemplified everything great in a hockey player.
This is the beginning of the end of an era – the first “core player” of the Cupless Dynasty to go.
If Dan continues to play hockey, it will be impossible to root against him. I hope he becomes the next Former Ranger to win a Cup.
It’s all sounds and feels like at funeral of someone 104 years old… great life, inevitable end…
In other words: “De mortuis nil nisi bene”.
Danny G….class act…..Ranger Warrior……Godspeed.
Alex
You are 100% wrong. Which you seem to be a lot when you are telling other posters what players they like and don’t like.
James
Love winter and snow. I’d take it 24/7 if possible. Hate golf, baseball, heat, sand, jungle etc
Don’t see Skjei getting moved ….young mobile cost controlled defenseman …Rangers we have much more forward than defensive depth
Girardi bought out, Skjei will stay, Stepan will be trade, Rangers will be 5th in Metro. Book it. Love and Peace.
I’m with you Wicky and I’m stuck down here in St Pete, but it is all about family! I hate the heat. If I could move the entire clan north I’d do it in a heart beat! Really looking forward to see how Gorton will reshape the blue line. It is a must there is barely a breeze coming through the slightky open window. Lundqvist running out of time! Oh and by the way, Carp great write up on Danny G. thanks.
I still don’t understand why TSN is convinced that Stepan is expansion fodder.
Also – Hank is certainly on the decline, but he’s still a #1 goalie. And his window of effectiveness can be extended if we have the right defense in front of him. Unfortunately the right defense doesn’t include Girardi. It certainly doesn’t include Klein, or Holden if he’s playing a meaningful role. And if you can limit Staal to 3rd pairing minutes, I think we can live with that and he might even enjoy a bit of a renaissance
4ever – Girardi to Dolan: ‘Ave, Imperator, morituri te salutant.’ For those who failed Latin II, “Boss, we who are about to die, salute you.”
Staal is still a serviceable third pair participant, just way too expensive and for way too long
I don’t get some of you, I really don’t. No one is untouchable. Everyone here laments the lack of top line talent, we don’t have a single first line forward on this roster, but you mention a good young d man as a potential asset to get that and you guys freak out lol.
–
Good Adam Gravy, id move Kreider, miller, buch, vesey in the right deal for top line forward talent or the right young D man and I like yhisebplayers just like I’d move graves or skjeL for the exact same asset..and I like both those players too.
–
You have to give to get you bunch of jackwagons and no one, least of all me, is trading miller and or skjeL for burrows or polak or cogliano etc.
–
You guys need to get a grip. Thankfully some of you aren’t running this team.
Brodeur drinks Expansion draught, eschews bottles.
Grip it and rip it!
Rooting for Jordan Speith and his special needs little sister, but I wonder if he has the length here since the nitwit powers-that-be widened the US Open fairways for the big hitters.
wicky229 ,
The problem with so called “…right deals” is that you never know for 100% what is it when dealing with vulnerable humans. In times it looked like a “right deals”: Wade Redden – best offensive Dman on the market at that time, 2 best productive “clutch” forwards – Gomes and Drury, than taken a discount best center Brad Richards, etc. So, be very careful with a burning desire to move all and anyone in a hope for get better, just for a sake of it or out of season’s end disappointment. Not to mention you don’t do it in a bulk…
no one is untouchable but Ranger defense rather than offense needs improvement and moving Skjej for RH young defense may not improve it either
This course if for the bombers…watch local boy Steve Stricker win it.
I believe it is time for the Rangers to start getting the best of their trades. I hated to see BGB go but I believe we got the better of the deal. I trust Gorton knows what he’s doing and we will continue to get the upper hand. It’s time for things to start going right for this organization. Wicky’s right you have to give to get. It just needs to be the right deal that favors our boys no more desperation moves JG!
I’m OK with them moving Stepan in the right deal, but they are going to have a gaping hole down the middle if they do not get a center back.
I said gaping hole down the middle.
I don’t why I always have to straighten you guys out?! 😉
Remarkably, Girardi never won the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, an honor meant for players of Girardi’s makeup.
================
But Zucc won it 12 times and he’s little and cute and tries hard.
Shea Butter – McCapt
Mr Smith – Stalled
Graves II – Hold-on!
Alt: My Camper.
For all their seeming inconsistency and struggles, NYR were 4th overall in goals per game during the regular season and 3rd in the playoffs. They were middle of the pack in goals against in both. To me, the bigger need to upgrade is on the blue line.
I have a question for those whose knowledge is strong in terms of the CBA and the buyout rules and regulations. It is out there, but bear with me.
Let’s say that Dan Girardi does not get a contract offer that is worth his while (whether it be years and/or salary). Are there any CBA/buyout provisions that stop him from going back to the Rangers and saying he’d sign a one year deal for a Tanner Glass salary ($1.4 million)?
First off, I would bet he would get better offers than that, but it is an interesting question in terms of a strategy that a team could use.
Why would the Rangers do it? well, it buys them a year in terms of retrofitting the defense. It gives the kids a year to develop (including this year’s 1st if they take a d-man). They effectively lower Girardi’s cap hit from $5.5 million to $4.0 million – and it keeps them from giving a really bad contract to Kevin Shattenkirk, who is going to get one of those deals that will turn out to be good to alright for a couple of years and then hang around a franchises’ neck like an albatross.
I know this is way out there, but I was just wondering if there is a loophole or did the NHL make sure there is no wiggle room?
They wouldn’t be able to re-sign him for at least one season. Not sure if the rules changed after the last CBA to make it longer, as I couldn’t find anything specific.
Wicky hates the sun.
Here comes the sun (doo doo doo doo)
Here comes the sun
And I say
It’s alright!
SN
Great point about Danny G and Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award. Crazy if you think about it.
Wicky
I could say the same about you not running the team.
This team needs more defense not less.
Sheesh
I’d rather spent a year in 5th than deal with 4 more years of Stepan and his unmovable and cap constraining salary.
And I love Girardi. On a Graves like level. But this core NEEDS to be broken up. im hoping Gorton really impresses over the next two months
Alex
Who said less D?!
If you trade one D man but end up with two or three along the way…isn’t that more D?!
You are one odd duck between your mcilrath fetish and lack of reading comprehension.
So if we trade/lose/buyout Klein or Holden or staal or Girardi, we aren’t losing a D man, but if it’s skjeL…omfg the team will lose D and be in a shambles.
Zero logic, just zero.
I mean Jesus Christ, some of the jackassery here, just wow!
You have a d man that has played one full season in the NHL and until the playoffs hadn’t shown he could win a wall battle or cover a 3 year old in the D zone. He definitely has upside and can certainly be a solid 2nd pair D man in the NHL and is still on a favourable entry level contract, but to freak out over the fact that he could be traded to improve the roster in one capacity or another is just, well you need to grab your colouring book and juice box and head to your safe space.
Bully people much Wicky? I can see with an attitude like yours you’re used to people caving in.
This defense is in shambles and you want to trade our 2nd best dman. They need to go the other way. Trade a forward for some defensive help. I’m talking about one of the 7 forwards that we plan on protecting.
I think you might actually agree that Shattenkirk is not the answer.
I agree you trade from positions of strength/depth (in the rangers case wingers and lefty D men) to fill areas of weakness/lack of depth (in the rangers case righty D, top line forwards, 2 of the 4 centre positions).
Not in to giving any player away for nothing regardless of how I “feel” about the player. Also have ZERO problem trading any player to address a need of this team regardless of how I “feel” about the player.
No one is untraceable
Yes I agree no shattenkirk.
Alex,
Now, regarding your “bully” statement…you clearly know nothing about me aside from a screen name, game of thrones avatar, and hockey blog opinions. I apologize if calling it how I see it because of how some respond incorrectly to a post I made offends you.
–
To tell me how I feel about a player and then get indignant when I rightfully tell you that you are incorrect, well I’d say you’re being a bit to sensitive and you should probably just apologize for being incorrect about what “I feel” and move along to another discussion topic other than telling fellow posters how they feel about a certain player.
Traceable=tradeable
Sorry, iPhone autocorrect for some reason

what these guys do is amazing
They were all bullies online and growing up!
these are the words of a bully. certainly not the first time you’ve done it wicky
“well you need to grab your colouring book and juice box and head to your safe space”
Or perhaps an accurate description apparently.
Suck it up buttercup
So Alex can proceed to tell other poster how they “feel” about a player…that is perfectly ok, but to call him on it is being a bully…lmmfao.
A perfect example of what is wrong with the world today!
No untouchables for a team that can’t get it done despite regular season success
Damn..this is all Brady Skjei’s fault lol
James
You are correct sir.
and those words are exactly why most people don’t bother actively disagreeing with you wicky.
it’s not worth it.
James
It wasn’t an issue at all initially, you and I were giving each other crap in our own loving way and then Alex thought it was a great opportunity to attempt to “pile on”, unbeknownst to him it was just you and I kidding around.
Alex
Ahahahaha
“Gentleman, you can’t fight in here! This is the war room!”
I have been putting together my various Draft blog articles when I came across something I never thought about before today. We all know the Rangers are making a 1st round pick for the first time since Brady Skjei in 2012.
Incredibly, the Rangers have not had picks in the first, second and third round of the same Draft since 2009 when they picked Chris Kreider, Ethan Werek and Ryan Bourque. It is possible that streak could end next year if everything stays the same. The Rangers did trade a 2nd in 2018, but it is the one they acquired in the BGB/Zika deal. I would expect Gorton deals one of those picks to Vegas as a “bribe”.
Anthony
and that’s a big part of not drafting a good dman other than Skjei since Staal. Some might say Del Zotto but i don’t.
Anthony
I wonder how many other teams, if any, have had a non all three picks like the rangers?
Forgot about the whole marchant mclean = NMC thing
I don’t want any more nice guys in our lineup unless they smiles out a minimum of 35 goals. We need some crazy bitches who just want to win. bite on and won’t let go.
Drouin to Habs.
Great deal by mtl.
I wonder if they are trading Galchenyuk now?
–
I’d keep both personally.
Smart move by Tampa also re expansion draft.
Follow up move for the Habs would have to be Galchenyuk for a Dman.
Saddest I’ve been over any of the ranger departures. Sad day.
Danny G was the best. Danny Gs heart in Kreider and he’d be lindros in his prime
Good graces to you and your family dan the man.
Bdl
As long as it isn’t skjeL
😉

Or a centre. Mtl seems pretty weak down the middle still.
Too bad ott retired, that really created a hole down the middle for them (s)
Pageau sucks
Wow what a deal for Montreal. Wonder if this signals the end of Radulov in Montreal. Galchenyuk is probably getting dealt in the next 72 hours
Wicky after the post season, Montreal fans are going to expect 58-32-90 out of Pageau next year 😄
surprised tampa and montreal made a deal within division.

The cornerstones of Cup winners can be found at center and on defense. Cup champions aren’t built on the wing
Jacob Trouba and Matt Duchene = a Dman and a center.
Would be nice James, I think it may be a bit of a stretch. Can’t imagine what would be going the other to land Trouba & Duchene!
James
Your 4:29…exactly
I like Galchenyuk as a player too. You have to wonder if he needs a “change of scenery” or if he’s just what you saw this past season.
All you have to do is look at the caps and realize that just a superstar wing won’t get it done.
Don’t have to be a NHL talking head or rocket scientist to realize that.
Strange thing about those caps though, the same talking head that said you need centres and D is one of the same ones singing the praises of the caps depth down the middle and of the caps D.
Oh the hypocrisy
Pageau x 2
‘Ave, Imperator, morituri te salutant.’
Actually, that means ‘Hail overlord, we who will die, they salute you.’
Wrong person.
Brother Dismas would hang you by your declensions for that one.
Cccp broke the blog…again
Yes, I did.
@Anthony: re return of bought out player – I don’t recall the specifics of it but do believe it is not allowed for some period of time, probably a full season.
According to a couple of québécois convos…a lot of questions about how much stepan could help the habs
Let me see habs need centres and D, rangers need top end talent

Go for it gorton
Yzerman is amazing. A year ago Drouin was on track to net a trade return of a R3 and mid-level prospect. Not only did he outwait Drouin’s agent, but he actually got decent production out of that kid, got an absolute stud dman prospect in return, shored up his protected players and saved future cap space.
Why do I have a feeling that Messier as GM wouldn’t exactly fare as well…
Amazing GM who was willing to give Callahan that insane contract.
Drouin 6 yrs 33 mil
For a skill forward…1 mil for every 10 pts scored, seems about right
Man… A lot of the Rangers fans are straight up retarded! The sh!t they say about this Drouin trade! How Gorton is asleep and how he blew this trade and how we coulda had Drouin for Buchnevich and some picks!
I don’t know why people say that Rangers fans are the most knowledgeable… it is CLEARLY not true.
Sh!t they say on social media, that is…
I think you have to say Yzerman did a decent job but the Habs got hosed, unless the gamble pays off and the Sergachev kid’s a future top pair D
Sergachev is going to be a stud. Book it. Montreal got themselves a problem child in Drouin. They also gave away another top dman prospect (See Captain McD). I hope this bites them in the ass again.
Sign me up for 82 games of Buchnevich while healthy and playing w Zibanejad. Drouin for 33 million dollars on another deal with a ton on term? No disrespect but
Let’s see him flourish in the Montreal spotlight before we go envying everyone’s shiny new toys as usual.
Now if Radulov becomes homeless as a result of drouin? I’d offer him a hot meal and a blanket in ny. But knowing how money crazed he is I’m guessing that’s not even a consideration by Gorton
