I posted a link to an article about guys who may be available in August but WordPress ate it as usual. I think I followed their procedure for including a link. One of our admins may be able to release it. It’s from Rinklive magazine back in January so some of these guys may have signed already. Johnny B’s brother is on their.

Been catching some NYR Game Replays on MSG-TV as the channel is next to Mets; presume they are showing through out the summer. Interesting to look back at segments of these games and appreciate the level of play which may be lost in the moment.

Hoping Reilly Smith works out as the glue guy for 93/20. How else do they improve is another year older of the yutes; Laffy, Miller, Coolio, Schneids, and most importantly, Kakko and Chytil. If both enigmas are on the 3rd line, they may need VC as adult supervision given their wayward ways on the Dzone.

A 4th line of Coolio-Edstrom-Rempe would be absolutely fantastic imho.

I would hope Cuylle would be ready for something more than 4th line minutes this coming season. He should be more than a banger. They could use secondary scoring from him

Cuylle should be a solid 3rd liner if that 3rd line is a real checking line that is looked to for some but not much secondary (tertiary?) scoring. Right now it’s not, and he’s sort of a tweener. He’s got the going-to-the-net part down pretty good but need to become more effective at it. Can’t fault his energy, effort, or playing style at all.

Great 4th liner if the 4th line will actually get real ice time. That’s not an indictment of the player but the roster construction and the role he would need to play right now. Scoring not his primary attribute, which may be why it appeared that he struggled on 3rd line when it was needed to be an even strength scoring line.

your solutions make the team worse… you don’t buy out a center when you have no centers to replace him and you don’t trade one unless you get one back…its not complicated

  38. Alex Avatar
    Alex

i don’t expect chytil to be healthy all season. and if he is playing he’ll be totally gun shy with his concussion history. we’ve needed that cap space. he is not top 6 player. he is not 3rd line center. drurys last chance to get rid of him via buyout at 1/3 rate is next summer. doesn’t help this season but this problem needs to go away.

  42. St Pete Eli Avatar
    St Pete Eli

You both have excellent points. Can’t trade or buy out a center without a center coming back. Chytil is not the answer at 3C, and is more of an accident waiting to happen then the Fragile Finn. So far Drury has his eyes closed hoping for the best.

  43. Alex Avatar
    Alex

‘”dumb asset management” except chytil is a liability. drury dropped the ball this summer

  44. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

There have been centers available the past two seasons, for similar or less than Chytil’s cap, that Drury was not in on, at all or in any big way. So that Chytil is still on the squad and apparently back to 3C is owned by Drury.

One that was available has played in 14 more regular season games but trails in the scoring – 39 vs 64 goals, 62 vs 80 assists.

On the other hand, they have 270 vs 141 blocks, 445 vs 124 hits and 47.9 vs 40.4 FO %.

    In 32 playoff games, they have 6G and 6A to Chytil’s 8G 5A in 36 playoff games.

Chytil’s cap hit is $2.5M more.

Another player that was available has played 708 games to Chytils 337 (2.1x). 126 G and 172 A, 389 blocks, 825 hits but a not so good (but still better) 42.1% on FOs. Chytil’s cap hit is $2.4M more.

Were the rangers clearing vlad’s $4M cap hit when they traded him at the beginning of the season? His subsequent deal much more reasonable but failure to replace him with another adequate $2M center more recently is squarely on the GM once chytil had “emerged”

    bobby

if they got rid of chytil at the beginning of summer, there would have been no need to trade for smith. would then have kept the 2nd they gave up for smith, which could be used at the upcoming deadline. so add savings from smith salary to chytils.

think chess. a few moves ahead

  62. Pete Avatar
    Pete

what top 6 RW were they signing? and how quickly would that contract have become a liability?

time to move on for sure, but Chytil a big reason they made the ECF three years ago as well.

don’t think they are getting past ECF until Mika, Panarin and Trouba either are all gone or figure out how to make a positive impact once get passed second round

  63. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

Trouba shot not be traded. There is no replacement for him. He’s a leader who stabilizes the blue line and plays the hard minutes esp on the PK and keeps attackers honest with his huge hits.

he was big reason we made it to ecf two years ago. This year his injured ankle decreased his effectiveness but when healthy I want him on my team

  64. Alex Avatar
    Alex

we have no choice but to get rid of trouba next summer. 13 and 31 in for huge paydays

  65. wwpd Avatar

they’re gonna trade Chytil and a bunch of other assets for 37-goal scorer Frank Vatrano, a guy they could have had the last two seasons at less than Chytil’s salary instead of future HOFers Showtime and Janice Rossi. duuuuuh.

they had a shot and came up just short.

    that’s sports

doesn’t mean the team is broken

they are knocking on the championship door with a lot of the pieces they need with some great players in their primes

  68. Alex Avatar

  69. wwpd Avatar
    wwpd

Drury’s plan is all about strong wings, he knows you can just castle a rook in to attack the center while moving your weaker piece to safety on either side of the rink.

  70. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

I knew those names would trigger you guys! Totally forgot about M. Barron until SN mentioned. Kid is certainly willing to hit and block shots, 46% at the dot.

We don’t need an “elite” 3C. We need one willing to get dirty, bang around and hopefully not be a defensive disaster. Maybe make a 3rd line that can take some of the matchup stuff off of Mika and Kreider. Heck maybe they might even be able to play PK too? Chytil 337 games, 7:50 SH TOI. Barron had 9:06 in 18G with NYR lol, 231:40 career. Namestoolong 614:29. Howden 462:05.

Not saying it has to be any of those guys but there have been players that could have filled the roll at Chytil cost or less and been better overall for the team.

As to the cap space, take the extra $2.5M and perhaps step up from former penguins? 3rd pair? Sprinkled on the bottom six?

  71. Pete Avatar
    Pete

no argument they could have and still can find a better suited player for 3C, but weren’t solving top RW in free agency with cap space cleared by buying out chytil, that amount of cap space could only have come via trouba trade.

Otherwise Longterm cap too big an issue, so short term trade like they made always the most logical move

An Clegg, let’s not forget Trouba’s poor play also turned the Tampa series for the worse last ECF as well. Don’t dislike him, just not quick enough to keep up as a top 4 D

  72. bobbyo2019 Avatar
    bobbyo2019

the names thrown out here are “meh” ….Panthers have Lundell as the 3C …and we think Howden as 3C would even things up? I have no issue bringing in a checking 3C but its got to be a good one and its not going to be cheap or easy which seems to be the consensus here… Centers cost more and teams tend to hold on to them

  73. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

Pete they are spending now 75% of 5M on Smith, so 3.75M. Add in a roughly 1.9M net net had they bought out Chytil and replaced with someone of order 2M cap. Now you are in a different swimming pool for that RW next to Mika, right? Either outright or a player who had a higher cap hit less retention.

There is no perfect solution because Drury has no interest in moving a #21 pick while he can still try to jam the round peg in the square hole.

  74. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

The names out there may be ‘meh’ but if their addition can make the overall team better, so be it. Note that the team made it to the ECF without Chytil and the handful of games he played (after much praccy and everyone swearing on a bible that he was 100%) he made absolutely no difference on the ice.

And it is not that I hate the kid (though I do worry about his long term health). There is probably a team out there that needs someone with his style of play and capabilities and cost. The NYR need something different.

  75. bobbyo2019 Avatar
    bobbyo2019

They made the ECF because Drury traded for a 3C that signed somewhere else for 5M this month.

just not obvious who they would have spent that $ on in free agency to me Beezle. For instance, had no interest in Guentzel at what he got.

Sign me up if they find a long term answer at RW via trade and for that they should be willing to trade a 1st rounder and a good prospect. Don’t think anyone in our system (or for most part NHL roster) is untouchable if the player coming back has fair amount of term left

  87. wwpd Avatar

You don’t have to give lindgren 6 years but a mid term contract of 3-4 would be fine. He’s only 26. May as well replace him if all you can agree to is 1 yr, that’s a deal you’ll only get once before he walks?

  88. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

I suspect you are right about where they will wind up with Lindgren. Does Drury want to have to replace him next Summer along with the other things he will have to deal with?

  89. Used to be Avatar
    Used to be

I don’t think the author of the underrated article, understands what underrated means.
Lindgren should have been trade last offseason, if not before. You could see this coming a mile away. Drury has lessened Lindgren’s trade value by waiting till he was a year from UFA. Now the options are, sign him to a deal you know is bad. Go to arbitration, and walk him to free agency, or trade a depreciated asset.

  90. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

Since he became a regular in 2019 after playing 5 games in 18/19, Lindgren is #58 in GP among all defensemen. The past two seasons he is tied for #100 at 139 games (interesting aside: Pionk tied #1 at perfect 164 games). Even so, in those same two years Lindgren is #2 on NYR in SH TOI at 337:31 to Trouba’s 364:48. KAM is third at 298:11.

I get the injury concerns but can live with him missing 10 games vs whole seasons or months for other players. Get him on for 3 or 4 years with a M-NTC (unrealistic to expect none) in the final two years. We aren’t talking 10M a year here.

  91. Used to be Avatar
    Used to be

at this point, all Lindgren is really known for, is taking a beating, and coming back from it. He’s tough, but what else is he. And as far as injuries/games missed go, how many times this year did Lindgren get hurt during a game, and either miss a significant portion of the game, or the rest of the game? I like him. He’s important. But at what price is being Fox’s sidekick no longer worth it.

The blog has advocated for moving Miller, Trouba and Lindgren since the season ended. Gustafson is already gone. That’s a lot of upheaval to deal with on the back end for Drury. Especially for a team that was in the final four last season and aspires to contend next season.

  105. bobbyo2019 Avatar
    bobbyo2019

I’ve only advocated for Trouba to be moved due to his contract …he’s a great 3rd pair Dman …if they were paying him 3 or 4 million less

  106. Used to be Avatar

ORF, to me, the left side needed to be changed. 2/3 of it. Either Miller or Lindgren, plus replacing Gus with someone not named Jones. I never thought trading or buying out Trouba made sense. Two years left, rode it out. Having now seen the cap problems for 25/26, only one of the two seasons of Trouba contract is sustainable. So he goes next summer regardless.

Remove Trouba lindgren goodrow and don’t replace them with others that style of play we’ll all (most) be here next year kvetching the rangers aren’t tough enough to make it out of the second round? Can’t win.

  109. Used to be Avatar

Trouba and Goodrow, yes, difficult to replace. Lindgren is easier to replace. The Rangers believe Carrick is the Goodrow replacement, at a 1/3 of the price.
unless the Rangers believe that Mancini is ready to replace Trouba, and it’s possible they do, then replacing Trouba is much more difficult than haters want to believe.

Okay so big tough capable defenseman to play top line minutes and for less than $3M is the ask? 🤷‍♂️

  113. Beezle Avatar

How many of Miller’s hits were to move someone from netfront? Probably not many as he doesn’t seem to be in that area very often. Lindgren spends more time there.

Also not sure what it means to “protect” Fox. Do you mean like physically? So Fox skates with his own personal enforcer? Or do you mean protect Fox defensive liabilities because of his offensive first focus?

  114. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

The issue with Trouba from day one has primarily been the contract. See how things develop during the season, still possible he is a deadline move though I would not retain more than 25%.

Drury should be thinking hard (in light of the Trouba contract) about Fox’s contract. Risk/reward is precarious with that hit, selling high often the better thing to do in the long run.

That’s Dom’s model at the Athletic that had the Rangers scrambling to make the playoffs. It’s really like a fantasy league model that tends to overvalue offense. It also doesn’t account for cap realities. There are currently no $15MM players in the NHL.

Fox is a great offensive D. He is undersized and was banged up a good deal of last year but still was productive in the regular season. The cheap shot he took in the playoffs limited his effectiveness in the ECF. I’d like him to play less minutes to save on wear and tear over the long run and keep him fresh for the playoffs.

Lindgren is not a guy to give term. Should have traded him last summer. Now Lindgren and his agent feel they have leverage. 1 season from being a UFA. Lafren has always the look of a gamer but the points needed to follow. If he puts up another 60 point season he’s in the conversation for that type of contract. Konecny needed to put up three 60+ seasons to get that contract. Lafreniere has stayed pretty healthy too, which adds to his value. Konecny’s been out of the lineup a bunch. The big question may be whether Lafren puts up these kinds of numbers when he’s not the opposite wing from Bread having a career year or whether he’s a big part the reason that happened.

IMHO Drury should have signed Lindgren to a longer term contract and lowered the annual salary. He is a heart and sole player. Now, he will be gone by next summer and once again the team gets softer and softer. Drury needs to go!!! If Lindgren goes, Dolan might as well tear it down to the studs and start all over again. If Drury offers Igor a 12 Million dollar contract, he needs to be fired before Igor can sign the contract.

Drury has decided to run it back with minimal changes. Improvement will have to come from within. Igor seems to be the only thing left on Drury’s plate now. 12 MM is 30% above what any top goalie has gotten in the last 2 years and more than most good teams can fit under their cap. Drury needs to decide what he is willing to pay him and act on it.

Igor, Lafrenière, and Miller being up for contracts in 25/26, has caused them to run it back. They could not give out term. Which is why Lindgren only got one year. They will probably go for it at the deadline this year, regroup in 25/26, and the start going for it again in 26/27.

General comment about the various signings of the past few years.

What is the point of ELCs and RFAs if teams are going to do six (or more!) year extensions one or two years in, at full market value of an experienced vet? The argument that “oh we might have to pay more later” is stupid. You save considerably on cap until that point, you find out if the player will even be worth that lofty contract and finally, barring pandemics, the cap will continue to climb.

If clubs are not going to use the leverage available to them in the CBA they might as well flip to the NFL way of handling contracts and cap.

That’s all of 11 players. My Miller, Lafrenière and Shesterkin estimates are on the low side. That’s not including Trouba, and Kakko.
