The New York Rangers have been playing well defensively during the playoffs and are currently ranked second in xGA/60 among the eight remaining teams. They have also been successful in preventing high-danger scoring chances at even strength. This is mainly due to their impressive penalty-killing units and goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who has been in top form. Shesterkin has allowed two or fewer goals in five of his past seven starts, with a .936 SV% and 1.70 GAA. The Rangers’ strong defense will likely continue against Carolina, a team they have dominated over the past couple of seasons. Shesterkin has a 9-5 record, .933 SV% and 2.09 GAA across the past 14 meetings, with nine of those games seeing five or fewer total goals scored.
Despite their 4-3 win in Game 1, the Rangers have struggled to score at even strength, ranking last among the eight remaining playoff teams in xGF/60. Their power play has been more successful, accounting for half of their goals in Game 1. However, it is unlikely that Carolina will continue to allow goals on power plays, as they finished in the top 10 in both penalty kill percentage and penalty minutes taken per game during the regular season.
I fully trust Andersen and Shesterkin, and I would be shocked if we see another high-scoring affair like we saw in Game 1.

Good early morning boneheads. I had to watch the game delayed had some family issues. I didn’t start watching until 9:30. I was so gassed I crashed after the 1st OT. I woke up early and just finished watching. All I can do is shout a Gravy special, Woot Woot Woot!
Friedman is not going to say the Canes are dead. They want people to watch the rest of the series. As the old saying goes – we don’t have a series until the home team loses a game.
I get that Friedman/SN have a vested interest in keeping fans attention (though really, after these last two games they need help?) but he is definitely not a fan of the NYR. Like pulling teeth all season to get him to say one good thing about him.

I had the SportsNet feed last night. Even their yuk-yuk moments tower over ESPN (apologies Mess). The play by play guy, Harnarayan Singh, gets a little excitable ala Doc Emrick but is pretty good. Color guy is Louie DeBrusk
