Rangers 4, Singing the Blues 0

Published by

on

A glorious victory over the Blues at the Garden last night; the Rangers actually played hard for the entire 60 minutes, something not seen often this season. In doing so they came away with the 4-0 win (no ENGs) and another important two points to stay ahead of Carolina who beat the Derbils in the afternoon.

The game featured two of the trade deadline newcomers – Wennberg and Roslovic. Jones was un-Prucha’d to fill the roster spot for the injured Trouba as the other acquisition, Chad Ruhwedel, got in too late to be able to start. Expect to see him in the lineup on Monday against the Devils. Schneider moved up to take Trouba’s position.

Of the two , Roslovic had the better game. He was noticable in all aspects other than the score sheet. Speed and tenacity were front and center. Hopefully our Swedish-Persian center was not vaccinated against those 😆 and catches some of that too. Wennberg had his moments, too, but was not quite in synch with his linemates, though that is hardly unexpected with little praccy.

Trocheck (23, PPG) at 05:51 and Vesey (13) at 19:37 both scored in the first period. In a bit of bad luck (some would call it a conspiracy), young Matt Rempe had a goal disallowed after review, officials saying the puck did not completely cross the goal line. They appeared to be the only ones who felt that way. Instead the Rangers would need to wait until 06:23 of the third period for Kreider (32, PPG) to go up 3-0. Kakko (8, PPG) added the icing at 11:23.

There were some flaws (Panarin, even with two assists, did not have one of his better games) but overall it was a very enjoyable game to watch. Perhaps most important was the more even distribution of minutes – Cuylle 10:39 and Rempe 11:08 were the lows, Trocheck 20:13 and Zibanejad 19:16 the highs of the forwards. Fox continues to be a bit overworked, logging 24:24 in part because of special teams.

Next up are the NJ Devils on Monday at 7PM EDT at MSG.

    Clean game

thought Wennberg and Roslovic both liked to carry the puck and look to make plays. Wenn set up 50 a couple of times and JR had some rushes where he created time and space only to be looking for Meeka mouse who was MIA.

noticeable talent difference with no JBro

watched the Wennberg highlight vid of his goal and he looks like A cross between Gretzky and Jari Kurri but seriously has good vision, spacing and doesn’t just get rid of puck like it’s a hot potato

only downside was nobody going after Butch who got angry after Schneider leveled him and of course knocked Lindy down. Jibes was just about to almost get angry about it. Maybe next time

Blues didn’t do themselves any favors, but:

Jones had a solid night, especially since he goes a month between games.

New Rangers are an upgrade, clear as day; still a bit surprised that CBJ traded Roslovic for a 4th but clearly he wasn’t in the future plans there.

Rempe has turned from a sideshow into a potentially legitimate roster player, 11min ice time including a reward of a late power play shift. Playing alongside tough crafty veteran like Goodrow will really benefit him. I wonder if Edstrom is surprised how he was passed on the depth chart?

Amazing we have three players from the 2020 draft class dressing regularly including the 1st 3rd and 6th round picks.

as long as rempe keeps going to the front of the net, the snarl he brings is an element that March hockey needs

endstrom looks a bit more skilled but doesn’t bring that “element” which is what a 4th line really benefits from

Both are getting valuable experience this year

in a cap world we will be losing the UFAs and will have roster space for endstrom again in September

For TommyG from the last thread, on the subject of Miller-bashing, I was surprised to see you refer to him as a giveaway machine having watched ~90% of games this year. So I looked it up, and sure enough among NHL defensemen he ranks 126th in giveaways with 22 on the season.

Granted he’s also not an assist machine (17) who would naturally generate tons of turnovers (e.g. Karlsson). But 126th in TO’s, 36th in hits (right behind Schneider) and 71st in Shots Blocked (just ahead of Schneider) does not strike me as a bad defender, especially considering he’s primarily a finesse and stickwork guy. Rangers are lucky to have him imho.

    good homework norm

not sure what miller will cost to keep. But currently he is very important to the team. And he has not yet peaked in my estimation.

  40. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

My main beef with Miller-probably not prime rib- is how often he is behind the play on odd man rushes. When I see the opponent bearing down on Igor I see that 79 on his back way too often and frequently when he appears the puck is already in the net. I’m not sure if this is real or me looking for problems in his game this. He gets caught up ice way more than Fox and doesn’t add nearly as much to the offense. His decision making on the other team’s half of the ice is what needs improvement and that doesn’t seem to be happening.

  41. SN Avatar
    SN

the hits (overcounted) and give-away (undercounted) stats compiled by nhl are a joke. One of these games I will track GVAs and TKAs along with hits for be a comparison.

A hit means separating player from puck not just hammering a guy after he made a pass; “A hit in the NHL is an intentional contact with a player who has the puck, causing them to lose possession”

  42. Corporal Clegg Avatar
    Corporal Clegg

have seen that a few times for sure OrF. Hopefully he learns from those mistakes. The most egregious of which was a week or two ago when he seemingly gave up on the play, and the goalscorer beat him by a half step

but he is human. And I myself accidentally did that in an overtime loss this year in beer league. Even though I know better.

  43. Norm Merton Avatar
    Norm Merton

SN, I award you an epic fail for your counter to my unassailable wonderfulness of statistical analysis. Are you OK with Trouba’s high NHL hits count? Are you OK with Fox’s low giveaway count (and good ratio to assists)? That said, I look forward to your hits and takeaways counts. I’m sure you’ll be more objective than those NHL pikers.

  44. Norm Merton Avatar
    Norm Merton

Miller and Trouba get toasted from time to time, ORF, like all pairs who defend against top lines. The question is how often relative to other top D pairs, given we don’t see all minutes of all other games. Natural Stat Trick, or whatever it’s called, is a good place to look at pairs stats.

  45. Loneranger Avatar
    Loneranger

My take is when both these new editions morph into our system we’re going to have (3) solid offensive lines & a good checking line. Chris Drury really waived his magic baton to create this opus. Furthermore it removes much pressure from the Kreider line. This team now has far more flexibility due to the genius of Drury

  46. Loneranger Avatar
    Loneranger

Beezle luv your earlier or later take on Miller. But agree totally with you. Miller can’t play defense and will never be a good defenceman. Has anybody thought of making him a winger. He cannot respond well when presured in the corners and always gives up the puck.

Is it just me, or does Schneider seem to play better and play more aggressive when he needs to step up and fill Trouba’s spot. I thought he played well.

The schedule makers really screwed the Rangers. They have the 11th worst schedule for remainder of season compared to Isles, Canes and Flyers who have 16, 17 and 18th worst schedules respectively.

  55. mkh Avatar

In regards to Miller, I neither love Miller nor Hate Miller. I certainly wouldn’t trade him at this point, as he is still young and I do think he will learn to play better defense. As someone else alluded to, he seems to make poor decision in the offensive zone and is often chasing players heading toward Igor or Quick in an odd man rush. I also think he relies WAY too much on his long reach and poke check. I would like to see him use his large frame and play a more physical game and I do think that will help his overall game going forward. He will need to be more physical come the playoffs for the Rangers to succeed.

Grier will be looking for another job after deal like this…. who eats salary for 6 years and sends picks back on the trade. Also used used up his retention slots so he couldn’t move other UFAs and now will get nothing. Hertl would have had just as much or more value next trade deadline..especially if healthy

  71. Bdl Avatar

he ate 1.5 for 6 years, but shed 6.7 for 6 years. You can argue the value, but not getting out from that contract. I mentioned it many times, Drury should have been all over that. Hertl at 6.7 is a steal.

They will really be in a bad way with the Cytil contract unless they can work something out where he gets paid as a consultant/player development guy/scout and he agrees to retire and void the remainder of the contract. I say up front I have no idea if that sort of thing passes league review.

I can’t see his agent allowing him to be declared “healthy” for purposes of a buyout during that small window as he’ll net 4.4M vs 13.3M. And if he is physically able to come off IR during the next season, wtf do the NYR do with him?

There won’t be any cap space and why on earth would they want to fill a roster spot on a (hopefully) cup contending team with a gun with 5 bullets and one blank? Nobody will take him without NYR eating half the salary, if not a third team for another 25% and they are still left with the 50% cap hit that they won’t have room for.

this is Chytil in a nutshell, in his “breakout” playoff, he scored 5 goals in 3 games, and 2 in the other 17. Last year he scored 7 in a 5 games stretch, and then went the next 19 games without a goal.

not the actual point. If Chytil is not scoring goals, what else is he doing? He has zero effect on games if he doesn’t score. Not good on faceoffs. Not good defensively. Not physical at all. Does not make his line mates better. He’s just a guy.

  101. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Chytil was centered the second line, but he was not the 2C. That was Trocheck. Trocheck played all the tough minutes the 2C usually play. Chytil, as usual, was sheltered.

Chytil is not the center they need, but some other team could have used him before he went down. There was value there and he could have been the best trade chip if Drury wanted to make a serious move to reshape the roster in a meaningful way. Now that title, unfortunately, shifts to Miller probably, who also has value but will be due a big new contract that will be tough for the rangers to manage next summer after extending schneider, lindgren, Lafren, kakko et al.

And by serious move I mean a young or prime player or players who also have real value, not a deadline rental and picks.

Nothing to do with Chytil, but FO% is a relic stat, right up there with +/- in terms of importance. Famously zero correlation with winning games. You try to do it well like anything else, board battles, positioning… Just one of many, many factors, but we’re drawn to it because play is stopped for a moment. It’s how you react after FOs won or lost that matters—“won” FOs don’t even result in possession much of the time.

In his 10 games this season Chytil’s FO% was 43.3%. His career (since 2018, first full season) number is 40.5% on 2003 taken. Of all forwards since 2018 with at least 1500 FO, he is #163/165. That is not #2 center material, maybe not even #3. I’ll grant that in those 10 games he did seem more engage along the boards than previous seasons, 10 games though is a small sample and early in the season when nobody is banged up yet.

If you knew for sure he would get 40-50pts a season you might be able to tolerate the FO and defensive weaknesses, but he only did that one time and he has serious health concerns. One player who is worse at the dot than him is Jack Hughes. Are we confusing Chytil’s offense with Hughes? (144pts vs 268 in 337 games vs 292 ?) Compare him to Buch who in his time with the NYR consistently hit that mark and had 0.65 ppg vs Chytil’s 0.43.

I really don’t get how that is hating on the guy. He’s at best a #3C. He has not shown enough offensively to be considered more than a 3rd line winger either (where you might excuse the defense and euro-physicality).

bdl, does Zibanejad stink because he’s a streaky scorer? Is it possible to play a strong game and put up no points? Chytil’s line got off to a great start—go watch the highlights if you need reminding—and it was an open question after Trocheck stepped up, and it stayed strong, whether Chytil would step back in when he returned, which, sadly, he never did. That line wasn’t working despite him, but because of him.

He may be young age wise but in the entire history of hockey, going back to 1917-18, Chytil is in the top third of games played – #1609 of 5145. Put another way, 68.7% of all forwards to have played the game have played fewer than Chytil.

i agree with beezle that the reason he won’t be bought out is his agent won’t allow him to be viewed to be healthy for purposes of the 1/3 buyout.

we’re going to have to attach probably a 1st rd pick to move him and his remaining 3 years.

worst case is by next season he’s then ruled healthy and we have his full contract hitting our cap. somewhat offset by LTIR. until his next concussion. we’ll then have to use other assets to replace him next trade deadline

funny you mention hating on the guy. you hate on a far better player in kreider.

Beezle, that’s just flat-out wrong. You see goals scored against right after your center wins the faceoff all the time. All you have to do to be credited with a win is to draw it backward. Occasionally that’s clean and to a D, but most of the time it’s to a winger who keeps it or loses it. Check the stats some time and see which team won the FO before a goal, recently or otherwise, and you’ll see why there’s no correlation with winning games. You just need to be reasonably competitive.

BDL, that’s bad-faith argument. I was of course not claiming Chytil is as good as Zibanejad. I’m making the case that streakiness in point accumulation is not necessarily the result of poor play. Chytil scored over 20 goals last season, and that counts. A player who scores a hat-trick is not a bad player when he doesn’t score the next three games.

Norm – my googlefoo is weak, I can’t find an NHL definition. However, I point you to this from a PDF on arXiv.org by SPORTLOGiQ, Montreal, QC

A face-off is considered to be won or lost based on which team earns possession first after puck
drop, and face-off wins can be marked as clean when the center wins the puck directly to a
teammate, or not clean where a puck battle ensues or a player must skate from his stationary
position to recover the loose puck that was not aimed directly toward him.

  129. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Norm, I guess what I see with miller is he has trouble getting the puck out of zone and makes some really bad passes to the other team but again it could be he plays against the top lines. Miller also does this near his goalie and drives me crazy. I don’t notice the other ranger defensemen doing this but he plays top minutes against top lines.

  130. Norm Merton Avatar
    Norm Merton

Lidström never took the body. I’m not saying Miller is in that stratosphere of defenders, but even though he’s more physical than he used to be, he’s always going to be a stick-first player who uses his size for its reach, not its mass. No problem if you prefer hitters like Trouba, but not all good defenders are hitters.

while faceoff ability can be over blown (see people upset that Wennberg was traded for with his FO% being in the 40s) I think there are times when faceoff success can be very important depending on time of game and location of draw

it is no coincidence our best line has one of the leagues top faceoff guys out there. Including PP posession instead of instant clear that kills 20+ seconds every time. Or vice versa on PK. We are tops in both of those as well with the help of trocheck faceoff prowess

when we were horrible at faceoffs every year it definitely was a weakness that hurt us at inopportune times.

Lies, damn lies and statistics. As mentioned way back when (yesterday), the NHL does a cr@p job tracking secondary statistics like, wait for it…give aways!

Plus-minus is descriptive, not prescriptive. Folks discount it’s relevance due to a multitude of other variables (line mates, matchups, team D/goalie performance) that could influence the stat on a game by game basis but over the course of a season or seasons, the numbers reflect ES performance.

does possession drive team performance? How does a player possess the puck? successfully making/receiving passes, wall battles, turnovers/giveaways, takeaways and…face offs. How much does a faceoff influence overall possession is contextualized to each game situation, but all things being equal, a team winning offensive zones face offs will have a greater number of scoring opportunities than when losing the draw. A team winning defensive draws will have a better opportunity to move the puck out of the zone.

  159. bobbyo2019 Avatar
    bobbyo2019

will just have to see if Drury buys out Chytil

  160. Norm Merton Avatar
    Norm Merton

Again, FO% not statistically relevant, no significant correlation with winning %, spread evenly through the standings. You don’t want to stink at it as a team, just as you don’t want to stink at any other aspect of the game, but there are way too many possession variables for that one turnover/maintain event to make much of a difference.

+/- is a dinosaur with good reason. Goodrow, for example, is a -8 on an excellent, high +/- team. He gets it in the neck over at the Athletic (that readership’s Miller) but he’s a defensive forward who is not here to produce points. Is he no longer valuable, or does his D, his PK, his leaving part of his jaw on the ice and playing two games later count for anything?

The way I understand it, if Chytil retires, then he forfeits his salary and would come of the cap (i.e. the favor Naslund did for NYR way back when). Otherwise, he is LTIR like this season and they can exceed the cap up to his his.

The worst case (for the organization) is what’s stated above: that he comes back as a fringe player taking up cap space and probably need to use assets to acquire an insurance player even if he remains healthy.

My favorite hits are the ones where you take a hit to make a play.
