Good morning, boneheads!
This Patrick Kane saga has to come to an end, one way or another. I understand they’ve lost a few games in a row to teams still in the playoff race, while the Rangers are all but mathematically in. But I do believe it’s not only that. I believe this lingering Kane situation is affecting them as well.
I haven’t scrolled through any news outlets to see if there is anything on Lindgren this morning. It didn’t look good. Does that change what they want to add by Friday? Does that affect the Kane trade? For people who are curious. Drury can place Lindgren on LTIR at any point, today or any other day, retroactively if need to. That would require Lindgren to miss 10 games AND 24 days. But it would also give them an extra cap space. Basically, NY can add players they want, and go over the limit by $3M. For example, as of this morning they have $1.705M space. If they place Lindgren on LTIR they can immediately add a player (or players) with cumulative (or one) contracts worth $4.705M, so long as they do not go over 23 active roster players and over 50 contracts.
I want to give LB some credit. He started talking about Kane to NY over a year ago. He talked about it during this summer, throughout they entire season, and he is still talking about it. A lot of places, including ours, were more than skeptical about it. Guess what, it will happen soon, more likely than not.
Right back at it later at 5 pm. They are playing LA. The Kings are almost in the exactly same position the Rangers are, but in the West.

Good morning and welcome to Sunday! Thanks for the new post. I want so much to believe they have a shot at the prize. Presently, the way they are constructed, I just don’t see how. But I guess anything is possible.
Yyyyyeah I still feel like sh** about this team…. If Igor isn’t Igor of last year and our team defense is as lazy as has been on display lately, this team is a 1st round out. Tarasenko is everything I hate about this team right now- Lazy lolligagger who doesn’t forecheck or backcheck. Kane is not the answer and to think otherwise is foolish. Sorry, but unless Drury addresses what we REALLY need…. The silver chalice will not be raised.
I liked what Trouba had to say afterwards. He spoke honestly which is nice to hear.
My take? Hard to drown out the noise about “what you need” to win. Esp with a vet group that got close last season.
Western Canada trip can be grueling and coupled with this portion of the schedule anyone rational could see this was an opportunity for a skid after a strong few months. All teams go through it. But they have to fight out of it and it’ll take the leadership group to do it. This is all hands on deck time.
I agree about tarasenko, 1 dimensional player, soft, fits right in with this soft bunch. The rangers need gritty 2 way players who actually back check and play defense to mix in with what they have, not make them even softer and adding kane makes them even softer. When will this organization learn what kind of balance and team you need to win lords stanely cup. Thi. s isn’t it, badly flawed team.
Devils don’t surprise me at all. I thought last year they were going to be good so not surprised with there success adding they been cherry picking high draft choices for years, sooner or later your going to be good.
Very curious to see what is going the other way in the Kane trade. As BobbyO pointed out yesterday, Jones was in the lineup for the Pack last night. Robertson and Cuylle too. Maybe this is a Berard, Sykora, type of trade. The Rangers have quite a few B prospects with potential. Laba, and Grubbe to name two.
Tarasenko has been here 2 weeks
Just realized something. Once Leschyshyn clears waivers the Rangers will have $2.4+ M cap space. That will grow to $2.6+ by Friday. My point is, if Lindgren goes on LTIR, they may not need a third team to be involved in Kane trade.
BDL, it also means Chicago isn’t getting much
You boys seem to be saying what I’ve been saying for years now about this organization. I’m not a pessimist, I just see what I’ve been seeing, and how management has never been able to make the hard choices. Until they do, Nash, Gaborik, Kane, and the next super-savior, will be our fate as fans until eyes are opened! But enjoy the game today anything can happen right?
I don’t think Kane is the right move, but I’m certainly going to enjoy Patrick Kane playing for the Rangers. I don’t get the anger fans feel about this move. You are getting to watch Patrick flipping Kane!
Yippee Ki-Yay! Roll the tape.
It’s true Tarasanko is a one dimensional player. Right now it would be nice to see that one dimension kick in because he is in a lost dimension.
We get angry because we have seen this show so many times before. It’s Bure or Lindros or Ken Hodge or Eric Stahl or Keith Yandle or some other aging player whose best years are behind him and who doesn’t meet the teams needs. And doing it for a rental is even worse. Kane will be here for 2o+ games and one playoff series. Enjoy it while you can and understand that the future of the team will be diminished by whatever they give up for those 20 games. The only question now is by how much. We have been led to believe the price will be pretty low. I only hope that is the case. If they give up their remaining #1 pick in the draft and a quality player for him Drury will be sealing fate as another failed Ranger GM.
Don’t be angry till you see what’s going back. Drury has been a pretty good trader.
Bdl……not yesterday
Traded Kratsov for a bag of peanuts
As far as the future of the team is concerned, they have not touched any of their top prospects in any of the traders they have made. Othmann is still here. Cuylle is still here. Lafrenière, Kakko, Schneider, and Chytil are all still here. Worrying about trading a 17 year old lottery ticket, who may contribute in 3 years? I’m not.
That’s what Kravtsov was worth.
And they still have all of their 1st round picks. If Chicago insists on 1R, Kane is staying put. He isn’t going to be happy with Chicago, and won’t do them any favors in the future. I think Kane earned enough for Chicago to listen to what he wants.
Even Gorton didn’t want to give up a 7th and AHL player for Kravtsov.
Ilb, exactly. There is no reason for Drury to give up a first this year, next year, or any year in this situation. I wouldn’t even give up Jones. Would prefer to use those assets elsewhere.
If CHI would prefer to get nothing and let him walk, so be it. But, if they get him cheap, and 4C options are too expensive, then go for it. Worst case it doesn’t work, and it cost them little.
Wait till Wicky wakes up. He’ll think Drury fleeced Vancouver.
Teams that win cups can can play a high skill, finenes game AND they can also play a mean, gritty, in your face game. The Rangers aren’t starting from scratch. This isn’t a pure skill, all soft team.
Yes, Blais is gone. He didn’t play in last year’s playoff run. Reeves is gone. (He actually dressed for all, bur 2 of last year’s playoffs games)
Trouba, Goodrow, Lindgren, Mikkola, Schneider, Vesey, Harpur. I wouldn’t call these guys soft. But one or two gritty additions could make a big difference.
Obviously, the will has ro be there. Like ILB said, they’re probably distracted and they don’t have that much to play for.
Kane and Tarasenko will both be motivated when the playoffs come. So will the guys who were there last year. Trocheck as well. Just need a little more sandpaper down the middle IMO.
Use the LTIR. Surely someone else is “banged up.” Ironically, this LTIR nonsense started with Kane in 2015 and Chicago won the cup. Teams have been doing it ever since. Put Lindgren and someone else on LTIR and rest em. Let em heal. And get another piece or 2 in addition to Kane by Friday.
Wicky will like the Lockwood has 37 hits in 13 games to Kravtsov’s 11 in 28 🙂
Drury did fleece Vancouver.3
I think we will all be eventually disabused of the notion that is all Kratsov was worth.
Granted he didn’t show much of anything here as it was clearly a broken marriage between him and the Rangers.
Boy, did I have a few typos in my main post
It’s ok ilb…I do it all the time.
Unfortunately, Kravtsov made himself a flight risk in the eyes of other teams. I think they’d have kept him if the cap situation were different.
Drury was like a scalper holding tickets for a game that had already begun. He held on to an asset for too long and he had to take what he could get and go home.
BTW, I fully expect Kane’s hip to go out on him in a week or two so that they wind up with essentially no return for whatever they give up. These are after all Your New York Rangers!
If the Rangers win using the LTIR game, Bettman will outlaw it before the draft comes. Use it while it’s here. The other teams are using it. Let a guy with a big contract rest and heal up so Drury can add more pieces. Remember Kucherov bragging about how far over the cap Tampa was when they won their 2nd straight cup? For God’s sake, do it.
After being selected at #9 overall spot, in almost 5 years this player played in 48 NHL games and amassed 10 points (5+5). That’s a Jeopardy question for 2030 contest.
Tom like when they got the #1 overall and the whole league had a conniption. Nobody complains when Edmonton, Buff, NJ, and Pitt repeatedly get the #1. Rangers get and supposedly the fix is in.
Tom,
Agree, use LTIR, and get Kane here today. Of course they need to be sure that Lindgren is actually out for the season. They tend to lose more when Lindgren is out.
The great William Lockwood.
You’re going to tell me that one of Panerin, Zibanejad, Kreider, Fox or Trouba doesn’t have a nagging injury and couldn’t use some rest before the playoffs? Just one of those guys and Drury could get more pieces.
If the ranger loose lindgren for the rest of the year, it is going to get even uglier since he is there best defensive defensemen.
William Lockwood. With a name like that if he can’t play hockey he could probably beca member of Parliament.
According to puck pedia, how it work is like this. Call up Hajek, and Henriksson. LTIR Lindgren. Send down Hajek, Henriksson and Jake. Trade for Kane being on the hook for 25%. Leaving $200,000 in space.
Ilb?
If you do the LTIR thing with Lingren and another guy, you can get a gritty 4c or two and another defenseman.
The last game just showed how fragile is our defense. It’s not like our darling Lindgren is irreplaceable, but the structure of defense just collapsed, demonstrating lack of flexibility in the changing obstacles and inability to be adjusted on the run. (coaching, everyone?). Add more then mediocre performance of our stars in offence and the goal, and we got a very shaky team, which also had no answer for the deliberate and unpunished pushing from opposition. All this in a NOT so good time. Not sure it is repairable in those couple pre-deadline days, regardless…As usual with our team – big discrepancy between promising paper roster and real games content. Oh, and of course, I’m talking only from the point of view of some fan, who is dearly expecting from his team to be a real contender.
Puckpedia tends to complicate things. Why do they have to call up and then sent down Hajek an Henriksson? If they LTIR Lindgren and Leschyshyn clears, they can get Kane today, especially for 25%.
Barbashev heading to Vegas.
Montreal and Dallas swapped Dadonov for Gurionov.
Wow Lindgrin our best defenseman ….what are you smoking bud?
Ok correction , best defensive defenseman , yes I agree with that
23 games to go. I think they’ll be just fine without Lindgren. So they don’t get home ice against the Devils. It’s home ice for NY either way.
Ilb, I think the complicated stuff is to somehow manage getting players in addition to Kane, but you know more than me about the machinations.
It’s not that complex, Gravy. Their current and deadline cap space will be adjusted after 2 pm once Leschyshyn officially clears. Adding $3M of Lindgren’s AAV will give you an idea what they can add today and on Friday.
ILB-is it as simple as putting Lindgren and one of 20, 93, 23, 10, 8 on LTIR because they have a nagging injury or are banged up to allow Drury to finish Kane and add a gritty 4c, a depth defenseman and a gritty winger? (Depending on price of course)
They need to make sure Lindgren isn’t coming back until the playoffs though. The way it looked last night, it shouldn’t be difficult. And yes, considering their cap situation and needs, I would absolutely use this unfortunate injury to their advantage
They may not need to place anyone but Lindgren to get another gritty 4C, especially if there is a third team involved in the Kane trade.
Ilb, that’s the way I interpreted it, but I was wondering if they needed to utilize the full cap (meaning acquire Kane) before putting Lindgren on LTIR in order to maximize the benefit.
Does VGK getting Barbashev effectively take them out of a Meier trade? That would mean it’s likely he ends up in NJ.
Obviously, I hope Lindgren’s injury isn’t too serious and that he’s 100% for the playoffs. It would be ironic and poetic justice (karma?) if a dirty hit from the Capitals, allowed the Rangers to add a small but missing piece to help them compete for a cup.
Is it possible to take a correspondence course in NHL cap management? Being a hockey fan is becoming complicated and I was told there would be no math.
Not clear if any defenseman they can trade for with cap situation would be better than Jones
Not really, Gravy. After Lescyshyn clears they can do it in any sequence
I have all the numbers. Don’t want to aggravate you with math. Even I’m bored 😃
The other question is who does an acquired 4C replace assuming Kane is a done deal (and a current roster player isn’t going the other way)? It’s basically down to Vesey or Motte.
Bdl 10:16
To me that is a lack of long term vision. One late 1st rd pick may be no big deal. But that game plan and way of thinking year after year is why this organization has. 1 cup since 1940.
The difference in the last 4 games was the Rangers played 2 clubs that were aggressively back checking, something the Rangers rarely do. With that not happening, the D has no choice but to back in and then surrender high danger chances. Add to that the absurd aggressiveness of the Rangers D, constantly getting caught resulting in odd-man rushes and breakaways and it tells me that part of the problem is the system (or lack thereof). Igor played well yesterday and still got lit up for 5 against. This is the time clubs typically tighten things up and the Rangers have gone the other way.
They might go 11/6 today. That preserves all their numbers
https://ftw.usatoday.com/2021/07/lightning-nikita-kucherov-shirt-18m-over-cap-stanley-cup
If ltir for Lindgren I’d think maybe re-acquiring Braun if possible or something similar for depth.
The reported asking price for Lafferty was a second rounder so I don’t think he’s going to cost much of what you guys are babbling about in terms of overpaying
And Rich- gotta take off the blinders about Kravtsov. He’s garbage until he proves otherwise.
Jones, yea, lets bring his gritty defensive play in the mix (Sarcasm). Jones is a small offensive defensemen, something the rangers don’t need.
Who are you bringing in Tommy that’s better at the league minimum because that’s probably the amount of space they would have left
That’s Drury’s job to figure it out. I’m sure there is a defensemen on the cheap out there for a low pick that would fit in defensively.
Rangers have been operating with a hard cap. Other contenders are resting guys and going WAY over the cap. What am I missing? Exploit the stupid rule and get (multiple) pieces and win. There wouldn’t be an asterisk next to the Rangers cup if they won because teams have been doing this for almost a decade. Put another big contract on LTIR.
Good luck with that
Just hoping Drury brings in more depth pieces and size with no Kane..just for the meltdown
James I just see his potential. In the right situation he is going to be a good player.
Rangers don’t do development very well.
The kid didn’t help himself either. We all know the story….if had gone to Hartford like a good boy and put in the work we would already know if his potential became kinetic. He screwed himself and the Rangers and then they kind of screwed him.
And if his story ends up like so many other stories of ex Rangers…he will light the Rangers up for a couple of goals and soon as he visits Garden ice with his new team. That scenario is obligatory apparently. We’ve all seen on a loop with different faces.
They had a couple of streaks like this back in the AV days when the defensive structure disappeared and they got lit up for a few games. It usually involved a road trip. This team is more talented and was able to pull out wins in a couple in those type of games. AV was able to get them back on track after those streaks. It usually involved them getting very conservative and maybe even losing a game or two 2 to 1 or 3 to 2. I’m not sure GG has it in him to do that and also some of their players (Panarin, Fox, Miller et al.) don’t seemed to be wired to rein it in that tight. I’d take a 2-1 loss over a 6-5 win at this point. This team has no identity right now and they are very easy to play against. If it stays that way major changes need to happen over the Summer and Drury has to think outside the box to get it done. Right now he is managing his way to mediocrity or worse. Each move may not be bad but what’s the plan to build a real contender?
Don’t buy this narrative that NYR screwed Kravtsov. By getting rid of at least three players first to keep him on the roster? They gave him another chance even after leaving last year. You could argue playing him over Leschyshyn, but positionally it didn’t make sense. But he didn’t earn it over anyone else, then asked to be traded.
Gravy Just watch his progress on the Vancouver team. He’ll be able to totally develop and we’ll have a sincere case of sellers remorse. The Turk has no patience.
On December 3rd, Gallant was a dead man walking. People had him fired. He’s coaching a win now team. He’s supposed to put Kravtsov in every game? He did put him in for weeks at a time. Gallant never bad-mouthed the kid. Not even after the trade.
Drury should have traded Kravtsov last summer. This was never a fit.
It’s amazing how some people underestimate the value of Lindgren. He’s the complete dedicated soldier on this team. This player plays hurt 2/3 ‘s of the time. He’s a moving target to be abused. He’s team first. What a shame.
I have questions. Would we rather have gotten Tarasenko or Barbashev ? If Kane is coming why did we need 91? Who made that call Drury or Sather?
The problem with our Rangers is they are always changing directions. They are never sure what road to travel. As a result they always get off at the wrong exit. The exit sign they never seem to find reads Stanley Cup. The exit they that they always find themselves reads tee time 9AM. I wish they would stop getting lost and get on the Championship highway. Many of us here, me included, are getting long in the tooth and this one will last a lifetime crap has got to change. Maybe firing Sam can change theat Karma and he can take Joe with him and they can go golfing.
Attention GARDEN area cabbies: You pick up Kane, keep your eye on the rear view mirror and be ready to gun it.
Lots of typos in my posts…..if the Nuns I had in grade school saw that my knuckles would be broken already from the dreaded ruler.
Kravtsov may very well thrive on a team that is not competitive, assuming he’s still there next year.
An organization can’t rush a rebuild, retool, rewhatever, starting with flawed pieces. It usually doesn’t end well.
Krapsoft left the house through a swirling toilet. What Mr. Arrogant does or does not do here on out in hockey or life, I care not.
Wonder if EVER #79 will get between his opponent and his goalie, either at netfront or in ineffectually chasing his man down the ice like a fat cop after a felon.
Dismayed to se no one put it to Oshie other than initially. Bad sign, IMHO.
All waivers cleared from yesterday. Lescyshyn is still Ranger property.
tomk19
Thank goodness we still have Lescyshyn.
I am perplexed how porous the caps D looks against everyone except, well you know.
St Pete – I agree. IMO signing Panarin ended any chance of doing a rebuild the right way. With this Kane trade, they will be an early playoff exit and will be worse off for the coming years. We have seen these same mistakes over and over and over again. To compound things, we will have to watch the Devils pass the Rangers by, especially if they get Meier. The Devils will be raising their 4th Stanley Cup before the rangers get a 2nd in over 80 years. So dam frustrating.
NYR haven’t won since Leschyshyn and Gauthier haven’t been in the lineup. Prust saying.
The problem is the league knows the rangers are soft. When the rangers played winnipeg one of the winnipeg player said to a ranger “what are you going to do about it” and of course the answer is nothing.
Internet and twitterdom and general hockey media are lauding the Canucks for their “heist” of vital Vitali.
I can’t.
NYR recall Bobby Carpenter
Mkh
Yeah I said that when they signed him. I was one of few that wanted a complete, total, house cleaning, rebuild. But I was never taken seriously. Honestly I’m not sure they could have done it right anyway. Drafting hasn’t been their strong point has it.
Per Mollie Walker: When a team is cap compliant they still need to have 18 available skaters, per CBA rules.
NYR only team who can’t circumvent the cap.
This blog should include the listing of several shrinks. I suspect many of us battle Ranger depression syndrome.
We can talk about how when we were little Ranger fans they constantly let us down…they weren’t there for us. We were left to watch Islander, Oiler, Penguin, Devil and Redwing teams Skating with the cup.
This has damaged our collective psyches.
Perhaps prozac or maybe even if necessary for some of us thorazine could be proper management tools for our Rangers induced mental health collapse.
I believe there is an overall confusion that goes along with a hard cap and the way some teams make personnel decisions based on that versus what the casual fan does.
In my opinion, a lot of it “should” be based on ROI of the player on the ice/in the room versus the cap hit. Multidimensional players more valuable than one dimensional players UNLESS the one dimension is exceptional (this could arguably be Panarin as an example).
Bearing this in mind, the rangers have made some good and bad decisions this season based on being tight against the cap…depending on ltir decisions , they may have to ice a complete roster while trying to accrue the maximum cap $$$ to add Kane asap. That means if the league mandates they have 18 healthy skaters playing (since the Lindgren injury) so they’ll likely call up a forward (since having 6 healthy d still) and the forward likely the lowest cost centre which is thé biggest issue on the roster right now.
I wonder how Charlie Lindgren felt about Oshie boarding his brother yesterday?
The second part of this is the players that play versus others in the similar cap hit range will tell you something.
We know the rangers for most of the season have been trying to accrue every single cent they can while still winning.
Based on that…and I don’t agree with this fwiw…since the bad decision Leschyshyn acquisition they view him as their best 4C option in house (I disagree with this, I think it’s carpenter).
He makes $767k, brodzinski makes $762, and carpenter makes $750k. So while they want to accrue as much as possible, they’ve taken a bit less accrual to play him over the other two who make less $$$ and would allow for more accrual.
This is an example of a cap world personnel decision that GG and/or drury made as a ROI vs $$$$ and they think the more $$$$ player gives more on ice than less $$$$ players despite the accrual need…whether any of us agree with it or not. They like that player better.
Carpenter now comes up with their accrual backs against the wall because he is the least expensive of the 3.
Regarding Lindgren…whom I’m sure GG says it’s nothing or he’s fine… if at some point he’s put on ltir or they bring up another d, we can only hope it isn’t jones.
Not only is jones not the type of d man they need going forward or in the playoffs but jones makes $925k.
Hajek makes less as does a vet guy or two in Hartford and while none of them should bring any sense of joy being on the rangers, they’re most likely going to be the 7. None of them will play for harpur because harpur played ahead of all of them prior to the mikkola acquisition and we have zero reason to believe that would change now.
They can add a vet d man, if the cap allows (ltir pending), that makes $925k or less for a low draft pick or bottom prospect that would be a far better fit than jones.
According to sportrac’s website, yesterday when I looked, there are 90+ nhl d men that currently fall into that cap hit range.
Hopefully that helps some of you out. Just trying to share a bit of opinion/logic/info…whatever.
Redacted Wicky
Some of things you’re writing are black out 🤔
Lescher chin (?) ‘Nobody in this League wants me even at $750 grand through 2025. Gulp.
$767…happy to help you out
Carpenter makes $750 though, so I can see how you confused it.
TomK, re: your 12.22p post…
Once a punk, always a punk.
Well-said Upstate!
I just don’t get why the Rangers want to play be a stricter set of rules than the rest of the contenders. Like Gravy said, the Rangers are the only team that can’t circumvent the cap.
