Pack played night. That was their last game before AHL all star break. Would suspect Blais will be back when the Rangers are. Waiving him only makes sense if you think he will get claimed. Otherwise the cap savings is not with it. I believe Ilb said the Rangers would still be on the hook for $400,000 of his hit. Then you would have to replace him on the roster. That would eat up just about the rest of it. No real savings. A trade, or someone claiming him are the best options to save.

I listened to Stalple’s and Valley’s podcast a coupleof days ago. They both view the All Star game as a joke and went on vacation for the week.
Wouldn’t be a joke to Valley if he had ever even come close to getting in one. As for Staples, he hasn’t the credentials to criticize anything. (but they both happen to be correct.

I haven’t watched a minute of the ASG in at least 5 years, but I will this year because my daughter is interested. Which reminds me that it’s mostly the point of the ASG to appeal to the younger generation and have some fun.

Nice story in yesterday’s post about Howie Rose and his battle with cancer. I miss him as a voice on Ranger broadcasts. But at least we will always have his call of one of the most important goals in Rangers history. Stay well Howie.

So the Packs real last game before their break was last night. Blais scored twice in the third. He has scored 4 goals in 5 games. Either he’s coming back to the big club, or he at least created some trade value. I think he comes back to the big club. I know that Cuylle has been pulled from the AHL all star game, so speculation is he’s coming back up. Can’t imagine they go back to 23, so if both are coming up, somebody needs to go.

Admiral that is a good query. Unfortunately it seems no one in the official governmental world is taking it seriously enough. They should have obliterated it before it over began it’s flight over our mainland. The truth of the matter as I see it anyway is that this “balloon” has been sent to reconnoiter the terrain and to view military and nuclear facilities. You only do this if you are planning a possible invasion. For example, see German invasion of Soviet air space prior to Operation Barbarossa in June 1941.
There are other examples but I think the point is clear. Unfortunately weakness what is being displayed and that only invites aggression.

It’s the same contract as Mika for a 60 point player (unless his current contract year is not an aberration) who one year younger. Probably same result where 4-5 years will be fine before it’s an anchor.
Maybe a bit of an overpay, for a solid, 200 foot CENTER with playable toughness. Right out of Wick’s playbook. Solid move by the Islanders. Hopefully, Drury is taking notes.

Rewarding a contract for performance in a contract year is never wise. I think pound for pound Mika’s contract is appropriate as a comparable. Just surprised the Isles are moving full steam ahead with an aging under performing roster with a deal like that

Signing Horvat makes it a pretty good trade for the Isles. He got about what people thought. The term is not great but that was probably what he was going to get from someone.

After a little caribbean escape from the winter, I’m back waiting for the other shoe to drop. Like BDL said- something has to give with the roster maxed out.
Islanders’ biggest issue cap wise is that they have 12.5 million tied up among Palmieri, Bailey, Cizikas, Martin. Plus they’re paying two guys to be the starting goalie. That’s not even dead cap space it’s more like necrotic. As for the 10 million they have tied up in Barzal….Is anyone going to tell me it’s because he makes other guys better?? Personally, I think it’s just an overpay to avoid another Tavares situation.
There will be more pressure on for the Rangers to make a bigger move now. If they are in fact interested in trading for Meier, they had better make sure they aren’t giving up good players/prospects/picks for a three month rental. They need to be sure they can sign him. Given their cap situation, I’m not sure how they can do that.
Hopefully the Rangers don’t panic and make a stupid move. However 40+ years as a Ranger doesn’t make one optimistic.

The thing is, Lou has this ability to pull rabbits out of a hat.
Somehow, he’ll magically find a team that needs to get to cap floor and needs a goalie… so there goes Varlamov and his hit. For the other guys, one or more will magically retire and/or pull a Boychuck.
Lou is going to start unloading older players with long term, high dollars contracts. Lou doesn’t give NMCs. All his “core players” have NTC that become modified NTC in a few years with 15-16 teams no-trade list. That’s what he does.
If Lou wasnt paying 5M for 2nd string goalie they probably woudnt be chasing a playoff spot
Varlamov is a UFA after this season so their goalie situation will be fixed. They should be looking to trade him at the deadline to a team that feels it needs a starter. They will gain $3-4 MM in cap space by bringing in an appropriately priced backup. Their forwards are old but their cap situation is not bad for the next couple of years which should get them to the point where it goes up and they have more flexibility. Wahlstrom and the bottom D pair are the only places they will have to spend. They don’t have many obvious prospects to bring in so they aren’t getting any better. They seem to be stuck in mediocrity. Their goaltending and experienced core may help them make the playoffs but they won’t be a serious contender. Sorokin, the top 4 D, Barzel and Horvat are their core going forward. Mostly solid but not great players-other than Sorokin.
Looking at Horvat’s contract, I know now I was wrong. This isn’t a push for playoffs. This is a long term look at his team.
I wonder what is Drury planning to do with 23 player roster. Can’t stay like that too long. Easiest decision is to send Cuylle back. Then why re-call him along with Blais?

My guess is that a trade is in the works. Probably Blais for a pick. Otherwise it makes zero sense to have Cuylle up to play 5 minutes. And they must really not want to play Kravtsov.
Or Goody may be going to 4th line with Blais/Cullye for a look with Lechysn going down

No matter what, just…. please don’t trade for Patrick Kane. His hip is not right, he’s on the back 9 of his career, and he’s not worth what it would take to get him.
Also, I LOVE Timo Meier the player, but the numbers don’t work and there’s no way to make them work. Unless Chytil and Lindgren went the other way, and that’s a trade I’m not willing to make. Bottom line, Drury will once again have to go the cheaper rental route rather than mortgaging the future.
