Good morning, boneheads!
Not a bad week going into a long hiatus for our boys. Five out of 6 possible points.
We’ll have a lot of time to discuss many things before they play again, so let’s pace ourselves. π
Just a couple of things/observations.
First, this Cuylle kid may become a very good compensation for them “losing” the medal thrower. He was asked to fight (read- challenged) by a guy whose team was down 2-0, and who wanted to give them a spark. Kolesar is in the league because of that, he is an enforcer. First, the kid did more than fine. Second, I don’t think he is going be in the NHL because his role will be to fight. He’s going to be much better than that. Think Barclay Goodrow.
They may have an excellent goalie tandem after all. Didn’t look like that for the first two months.
Drury got a very good head start going into next couple of tough seasons cap-wise. Two under the radar depth signings, both for two years. Both players, Harpur and Vesey, are having very good seasons, and if continued like that, would’ve fetched much more money in July.

Is this thing on…first
Kravtsov didnβt play. Fire Gallant.
Chytil’s goal was the definition of confidence. Swung and missed on two shot attempts and then still stuck with it and threw it on net backhanded. Great for him.
Glad Cuylle got a couple games. Really made a good showing with limited ice time.
Good way to end the first half. Now they can head for the Caribbean to get some time away. All it took for Lafreniere to awaken was to put the kid line back together. If Drury can find a right wing to add, pushing Vesey to the 4th line maybe they will have something. Of course, that depends on Gallant actually using the 4th line. I wonβt be watching the nonsensical all star farce. The best thing about attending the all star weekend is the fan fest. Otherwise, a real NHL game is much more exciting.
BDL theyβve been tuning him out all season
Credit Drury for picking up an unsigned Harpur at a time when most of us thought there wasnβt much to be had from the scrap heap and were focused on the waiver wire.
I like that Drury has made a point to retain his own depth guys instead of just residing to the fact that he can go out this summer and just find some depth guys like many GMs do.
Roster turn over isnβt always the best thing- especially if you see guys as a good fit.
Sticking to my guns about Halak. If he gets some goal support the first month of the season thereβs no controversy about whether or not he would work out. Glad heβs here even if I canβt stand him for what heβs done to us over the years
Halak’s performance makes one rethink the idea that backup goalie is a place to gain a little cap space. For a few hundred k they may get themselves a few more wins.
Funny thing about Georgievβ¦to this point heβs started the same amount of games that he played all year last year for NY. Similar numbers except for a dramatic difference in save%. I often wonder if thatβs a sign of a better team in front of him causing him to see a lesser quality of chances or if itβs just an indicator that heβs motivated to be at his best nowβ¦
Either way he wasnβt a good fit here whereas Halak is a competitor but understands his role and does whatβs necessary to do it well.
One thing that stands out regarding Laffo-Busto, and Wicky brings this up often, he hits everything that moves. He may not be putting up big numbers YET, but it is obvious his confidence is growing. I still consider him a year behind in his development due to the 2020 covid year. His situation was different living in Canada.
Georgie benefiting from a D with more hockey sense than we, other than our top pair.

My son just sent me this
2009-10 Rangers missed the playoffs in their final game of the regular season. They went 7-2-1 to down the stretch and had a chance to make it when they had a home and home with the 8th place Filth. They lost in a shoot out in that last game which eliminated the Rangers and meant Philadelphia was in. The Flyers went all the way to the Finals where they lost to Chicago 4 games to 2. Hawks won their first cup since 1961. (Kane scored in OT to win game 6.)
Lundqvist started 72 games that season. They were only able to get 2 wins from Valiquette,(who had 5 starts), and 1 from Chad Johnson,(who had 4 starts). Alex Auld had one start. Matt Zaba came on in relief. Neither of those two had a win that year. 3 measly wins from their back ups. 4 would have gotten them into the playoffs. Backups matter.
For curiosity sake, did a bit of research on ‘dog’s breakfast.’ Seems the term came from Great Britain in the 1800’s. When people let their hairy pets out early in the AM to pee, the doggies would often feast on the fresh puke of homecoming drunks.
Impressed by Cuylle. He has more skill than given credit for. Plus the obvious other stuff. Probably doesnβt make sense to keep him around playing 6 minutes a night, but there is a lot to look forward to with him.
Going to be tough for Drury to keep Cuylle, and make a significant trade. They are all going to ask for him.
I canβt help but look forward to a team with Cuylle and Othmann on it. Those two will bring some edge.
Amazing how Will has grown an inch or two and 10 lbs. since he was brought up. Not that it matters, happens all the time, but the measurer must be the same guy who compiles our imaginary ‘hits.’
Drury needs a bottom 6 fit next year at minimum salary …thatβs Cullyee
As expected, Cuylle sent back to Hartford. Will be interesting to see if he comes back up for some more games after the break.
Met’s Cohen already owes an extra $100 million to MLB because of his spending. Eventually the NHL will have one guy making $85 mil and the rest of the team splits the left over five-hundred thou.
Cuylle makes $750 thou up here and $80 thou down there? Is that the reason he spends this hiatus in New Haven?
Saves the Rangers (cumulative) cap space which gives them more space at the deadline. Sucks for Cuylle, but his day will come.
BDL Alreasy starting in with the βhe has no choice but to trade Cuylleβ lol
Obvious Ranger deadline trade chips
Kravtsov

π possibly
Yeah James,
Thatβs what I said. π€¦ββοΈ
Hip the Kane talk is smoke,,,,can Drury get a Barbashev/Acciari package without moving first rounders?
BDL, they have enough blue chips and picks to make a trade or two without sacrificing what he wants to keep. He stoped all conversations when it came to Schneider last year. There is a paucity of players like Cuylle and Othman in NY and in the system. Drury knows.
I think Eli is pretty close on who is made available. I think you can add in Sykora, Laba, and Grubbe. Maybe even BMB, who is having a big year.
Wild Bill gets the hat!
Better not trade the 1st round picks
I am resigned to the likelihood that Kratsov is going to be jettisoned but I also know that that will eventually be regretted.
Rich,
I agree with half of that.
So nothing to talk about other than possible trades until 2/6. Hope they don’t get on any ATVs during the break. Who hurt Matthews in Toronto? I don’t recall it happening during the game.
Bdl
I knew about those guys as well just didn’t want to make the list to long.
BRANDON PRUST?
rich
I wasn’t suggesting they move them all just that the pieces are there for the right deal without moving Laffo-Busto, Krakko, or Chytiljuice.
Trade first round picks at the drop of a hat in the right dealβ¦trade guys that require new deals with limited cap space is also a no brainer.
Canβt get locked into hopes and dreams and maybes, winning is more important.
Wasn’t it Kravy who leveled Matthews in TO? π
Wicky
You would trade me in the right deal.
Upstate
My son said it may have Goodrow.
Upstate
I think the Mathews injury was a carry over from a previous game and it was aggravated in the ranger game. Iirc.
Hereβs a quote from the coach about it fwiw
To be honest, I’m not certain whether there was one specific incident,β Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters following Fridayβs morning skate. βI noticed him in a little discomfort a couple of times through the game but didn’t think much of it at the time. He was still sore the next day, so they brought him in for an MRI.β
I just assumed Upstate was joking.
Do you think Kravtsov will like playing in Canada?
Kravtsov is going to Chicago or San Jose. As a throw in.
St Pete
Yes, if the deal was right and the other poster was a better fit in the roleβ¦yes Iβd trade you and have Ilb drive you to the airport.
Even though I like you and we drafted you, itβs about winning in the end.
Wicky
I can accept that.
Bdl
Thanks but that was a yes or no question not where he may eventually be traded.
Eli,
Ok, then the answer is no. Kravtsov is not going to like playing in Canada.
Bdl
Thank you thank you very much!
Wicky
Now that I’ve had a chance to think about I’m too old to go into the dirty areas anyway.
Lolβ¦brilliant
I think Kravtsov will like playing

Pack playing tonight. Cuylee in lineup. Blais (2 in 3 games) has scored, as has Carpenter. His 11th.
Pack down 7-2 after 2. Blais has found his scoring touch at the AHL level anyway.
Orf…. perhaps that is because he is an AHL level player?
We certainly can’t rule that out.
Woke Uncle Larry ruins another Sunday NHL article …Molly clueless as always
Print media certainly is making a lot of noise about the decision not to wear the “pride” jerseys. You would think from all the commotion that someone died or something. Sheesh.
I agree Rich. A lot of national media are piling on and even Molly and other Ranger beats as well. I think it’s unfair to the Rangers who did break a promise, but recognized that Proverov had a right to not go out in warm ups. However, the Rangers didnβt want to make that the story of the night. They didn’t want to divide the team or put them in an awkward position. They wanted to go out and win their last game before the break.
This is bigger than the Rangers and even the league. After what happened in Philadelphia, Brooks cautioned those who thought Proverov should be punished for not going out and wearing the Pride jersey. He gave examples of other political ideas and wondered how people would feel if players were forced to participate in those causes.
I actually think Brooks’ take on this has been a lot better than the other beats and nhl writers. After the Rangers Pride Night, he says:
” . . .if one protester can shut down this kind of event, what are we doing? What are we doing?”
There’s different ways to interpret that, but my take is that Brooks thinks maybe the event needs to be at least modified or reinvented. Maybe it becomes about tolerance,(and not Pride Night . . .(?)) Again, I’m speculating.
Maybe HOF, “Everything is perfect in my NHL/there’s no tanking” wants to chime in? Or does he want to let Dolan and the Rangers dangle in the wind before he addresses another problem “that doesn’t exist.”
It’s an NHL issue so we can discuss it within reason just don’t take it off the rails, please. You all know what’s going to happen if you do so let’s just avoid a day of aggravation on the hockey blog. Thanks.
Just like religion and politics has no place on this blog (it’s a hockey blog) sexual preference has no place in sports. If it does what’s next? That’s all I have to say on this subject, back to HOCKEY!
It all has it’s place in professional sports as a result of these professional athletes being very influential in society and to endless amounts of young fans. While it would be nice to live in a bubble where that was not the case, it’s just the reality of the situation.
I do agree that we don’t need to go into a convo on this blog about it.
MSG just should have known better. You can’t go 90% and then pull a 180 with something like this. They should have just followed through and then made whatever changes to the warm up jersey thing they felt was neccessary moving forward.
Now this is just going to be another hot issue that distracts from the sport we love.
Those who preach tolerance should be more tolerant of Proverov. If it’s ok for Kaepernick to take a knee it’s ok for Proverov to pass on the gay pride shirt. If there were guys who were made uncomfortable by it I can understand why the Rangers changed their mind.
So a somewhat related story. When I lived in Boston I played on an adult team with 2 of my sons. It was as close as I could get to being Gordie Howe. There was a team in the league that was essentially a gay team. It was no problem to anyone in the league as I recall. We knew a couple of the guys on the team and would fill in occasionally when they were short a player or two. My oldest played goal for them a few times including the last game of the season. It was common to take a team picture after the last game. He’s on the ice as they start to pose for the picture. He knows team pictures of the team have appeared from time to time in one of the local gay newspapers and is torn on what to do. He doesn’t want to offend guys who are his friends but has mixed feelings at best about having his picture in a gay newspaper-not that there’s anything wrong with it. His solution was to pose in the picture but as they are about to snap the photo he drops his goalie mask over his face. He’s the best politician in the family.
Possible trade partners.
About half of Brooks article today covered the stupidity involved in the current playoff format. Would it not make sense to just line up the 16 participants as 1 thru 16 and 1 plays 16, 2 plays 15 and so on. That makes sense to me even if it means the two finalists may be from the same planet conference, division or even the same geographical location.
And and I long for the long lost days when sports was actually about sports. Perhaps it is wise not not alienate parts of your fan base. Most fans, me included, just want there team (Rangers in this case) to score more goals than they allow.
Used to be that way Rich. Rangers played the LA Kings in the 1st round back in 1979 & 1981. ’81 was a wild one that included a 10 minute, bench clearing brawl.
I remember that. I remember waking my mom up to see the brawl. She liked that kind of stuff. I miss my mom for stuff like that.
Now I entertain my wife with that stuff.
You can Just stop the appreciation nights or any jerseys …but that would.Make sense ..
And I mean all appreciation nights …just play hockey
Brooksβ article today is good. Less games between division rivals but still using the divisional playofffs is dumb. All so that these clowns can have an NCAA tournament like bracket challenge. They have much larger problemsβ¦β¦..like what happens when all the Bally sports (Sinclair) bankruptcies and the affiliated drop in hockey related revenue to the salary cap hits the NHL. It is all about the owners being made whole above all issues, so maybe the cap stays static for the next few years while they try to make up the difference. Just ask Gary Bettmanβ¦β¦..things have never been better.
Can’t they still have a bracket challenge? Is it that difficult to figure out a new configuration? Sometimes I wonder if this an alternate universe.
Bobby-that’s definitely an option. It would solve some of the problems, but I’m sure a lot of us would be disappointed and angry if they got rid of military appreciation night. I know it’s apples and oranges. Not going to please everyone. Canceling all the events might also be interpreted as admission that they never should have had them; an admission that the NHL had made a mistake. That’s not how Gary rolls. Just look at that team in Arizona.
Many of us, me included, would be dismayed to hear that our Defense Department paid NFL teams (at a minimum) $5.4 mil to honor the military on field and continues to do so. Don’t know about the NHL, but my guess is yes.
I’m hoping they get an upgrade at LD and Harpur becomes the clear 7th defenseman post deadline, but if they wanted to spend more capital and cap space on forwards,(and less on LD), I could see Jack Johnson coming back here. Makes $950,000.
Pending UFA for Chicago. Won a cup with the Avs last spring.
Stralman, who basically begged to stay here, was probably our best under-the-radar Dman until we ungraciously jettisoned him and Foxy came along. We could probably still utilize him today.
Coos the only thing that money should be spent on is training these boys and girls how to defend themselves and inflict damage on those who attack us. The military should only be about killing people and breaking things as a wise man once said
quite correctly. It is not a day camp.
Jack Johnson was a passenger on the Avalanche. He would be a anchor of huge proportions on the Ranger grounding it to a slow halt until like in Boats and Hoes it crashes.
The NFL is still an not for profit organization isn’t it? Can someone here explain that?
Can do better defensively than JJ. Agree with Coos on Stralman out of AZ. Or even Brauner 2.0 when Philly starts their fire sale
Iβd argue that neither qualify as an UPGRADE over Hapur. Goes triple for JJ.
Upgrades involve high salaries
Anyone for bringing back Marc Staal to be Schneiderβs partner?
TMY….Why not. I hear he comes from a great and wonderful family.
Yeah. JJ definitely a bargain basement option and Braun was fine last year. Hard no to Marc Staal at this stage. Lol. Edmundson and Gavrikov are my 1st two choices. Going to need 2 or 3 forwards too. Hopefully, Drury gets it all done.
No to Mark Staal we’re trying to win the Cup not a Shuffleboard tournament.
Trade deadline priority RW for Krusty and a 4c. I’m not saying that’s all they need just the most important.
I think Boston grabbed Stralman. 36 yrs old, $1 mil, 1 yr. May be in Providence.
Krusty is the perfecto appellation. Krusty bread, and damned if he don’t look just like that TV clown.
If you go for lower cap hit d, the guy to get is schenn out of Vancouver (heβs a righty like Braun).
4C and Bread crumbs.
Tom you could still do appreciation nights with pre-game festivities without jerseys
No on Johnson …Staal maybe …. a Gavrikov is gonna be expensive maybe Kulikov /Ducks or Stanley/Jets

How about “Stupid Fan Appreciation Night”. Who would object to that
I suspect you are directing that at some people here, but I actually think it would be pretty funny. There are some really stupid Rangers fans on Twitter. You could honor their stupidity. Here is Joe Blow. He recently said on Twitter blah blah. How stupid is he!
Or you could honor stupid beat writers.
Hereβs Vince M. We are honoring him for his brilliant analysis of Karl Henriksson, and Guy La Trivigno. Vince is one of the more out spoken stupid beat writers, and we are honoring his stupidity tonight. Stand up and take a bow Vince!
Twitter is for twits. Inherent in the name. Next will be Nitwitter for complete twits.
My sense is if they had another game the next day this would have disappeared by now. Since there is nothing else to write or talk about everyone will keep beating this dead horse. The ASG silliness will be the next topic of conversation.
The Isles and Devils are playing. Maybe we can talk about them. I see people talking about Timo Meier going to NJ. That would likely be a rental since the Devils only have $2MM in cap space and have several RFAs and UFAs to deal with over the Summer. Are the Devils all in and willing to expand major assets on a rental?
Am I the only one who didnβt realize the All Star break was a whole week this year (plus 2 extra days off for NYR)? Maybe the memory is going, but always feel like it was just 3-4 in the past.
Gravy
Iβm pretty sure itβs only Thursday-Sunday league wide.
I think the rangers also have their βbyeβ week or something.
Oh, I forgot they get a βbyeβ week in the schedule. Guess itβs age then π
RIP Bobby Hull. Scored some big goals against us in the 1971 playoffs. One of my first hockey autographs (Reggie Fleming being my first). Was in training camp for the Rangers at the end of his career. Great ambassador for hockey when it was still growing in the USA.
Zegras is such a little wuss. Heβs going to get a well deserved trolley track one of these days and it canβt be soon enough.
Zegras simply put, a talented spoiled brat!
JT,
Yup, Hull was with the Rangers in Herb Brooks first camp. 81/82? They went to Sweden and Finland for some preseason games. Hull scored a goal. Hedberg blew out his knee, and when that happened they decided against Hull. Hedberg and Hull (along with Nilsson) were line mates in the WHA.
Yes Bdl, saw a photo of Hull in a Rangers jersey from that preseason. If we had him 11 years earlier, we would have been in the Cup finals vs. Montreal & rookie goalie Ken Dryden.
Stick taps for Bobby Hull!
I remember him torturing the Rangers in the 60s. He skated across Gump Worsely’s glove hand one night and almost took the arm off. A bloody mess and Gump was out for quite a while.
Him and Mikita were among the first to use curved sticks and they terrorized the maskless goalies with slappers that no one knew where they would go.
At Cosbyβs back in the day, they sold these caricatures of the NHL stars. One had Bobby Hull winding up with this ridiculously curved stick while the puck was praying. Hull was
Probably the reason why they started regulating the curvatures on the sticks!!
Oh-Boy.

Beuvillier, Raty and a #1? That was all Vancouver could get for Horvat? I am surprised.
Not a boatload, but not nothing either for a rental. If the Islanders still continue to fall out of it, Lou could trade him (and others) away at the deadline.
Lou maybe attempting to keep Horvat from Drury. Although I don’t think Drury was going after BoBo.
But if he likes the player, could see Lou extending him. Between. Beauvilier and Varlomov’s deal expiring, he could do it.
Raty was a projected 1st rounder that dropped to 2nd round He looked pretty good the few games I saw him ..also a Center
Centers and defensemen with hostility and agility. That’s what wins in the playoffs.
Get on the phone Drury!
Hmm
Bar-Zuul
Horvat
Nelson
Cizikas
Probably Horvat at 1C with Barzal on Right
So what happens to that #1 pick if fishsticks finish in the top 12, which is actually bottom 12. If the pick is top 12 protected does it roll over to 2024?
It all depends on whether he is a rental. If Lou can he resign him it’s a pretty good deal. If not it’s a lot for a rental and if they don’t make the playoffs and he walks it is a disaster.
Got to give credit for pulling the trigger early and giving them a better chance of making the playoffs where anything can happen.
Good move for Fishsticks.
Beauvilier was overrated, Raty is a top prospect in a weak minor league system, and a first rounder is just another prospect.
Horvat is real deal.
I still donβt think the islanders are going anywhere.
This thing on?
Figure the Rangers comparable to that trade would be,
Chytil, Cuylle, and a first for Horvat.
I donβt like that trade for the Rangers. Still going to have to pay a 3rd center a lot. There are not many Cuylle types coming up in the NHL. The Rangers have one in Cuylle. The first could be better utilized.
forget the shiny toys…. Acciari/Barbashev ….Bjugstad/Ritchie would be good adds…all rentals and hopefully cheaper
Isles can fit Horvat under the cap next year after Varlamov comes off the books. The Rangers can’t. Hard to do salary retention with an expiring contract and Canucks don’t have cap space anyway.
Drury will trey to do what he did last year hopefully minus the overpay for the Copp rental.
I would not be upset if they traded for Kane, or Meir. Depending on price of course, but I agree with BobbyO on his type of trade target. I would add Domi to the list.
Good morning, boneheads!
Hard push to make it to April by Lou. Hard to say whether it’s an overpay yet. But like ORF said, Lou is taking chances. I don’t think they will make it this year. And if Horvat does sign long term on top of that, it’s “Fire Lou” time!
I donβt quite agree with bdlβs example of the comparative ranger price (I think cuylle is a bit of a unicorn and raty is a good young player but less of a unicornβ¦both are second rounders so I get that part) not sure itβs an overpay. If he does not re-sign it might be. The first rounder is meh.
Wicky,
Was thinking more along the lines of where they are in their careers, and draft status.
Some of the names ranger fans throw out as deadline βacquisitionsβ look more line names to avoid losing some current players instead of names to make a difference for the team come post season.
Some of them would be good adds for depth and may indeed be acquired but it would be not good for drury or the team to not add a more go for it player. Maybe it costs mostly pucks like last deadline or maybe due to cap it costs players/prospects this time (or the combo). It wouldnβt fit the team/organization MO or current object to do minimal.
Bdl
Yeah, I got that. I mentioned they were both seconds. I knew there wasnβt an exact comparable so to speak. All good and your point is well taken.
π
Most didnβt think theyβd add 4 players last deadline (including the beats and talking heads) but they did and were able to do so with losing only one nhl level player/prospect. ThΓ© didnβt have to worry about the in season cap as much and had a bit of options in the off-season cap last deadline. This season is a bit different in both regards, we can hypothetical trade all we want to make sure acquisitions wonβt include guys we like but itβs pretty damn likely someone is going at the deadline or in the off-season due to the cap, smart move is to get something of value for whomever it is and bring in what you can for this post season.
This team has holes and needs to be better as we all know, drury has a tricky situation and needs to improve it and there needs to be at least one adjustment in the top 6 forwards and if that comes from outside the organization itβll be costly.
An Acciari /Barbashov package would be a nice fit… you straighten out 4th line and get deeper down the middle and add a physical winger to open up space …hopefully on Panarin line..also free up Goodrow to move up or down in lineup on wing. Bjugstad would do same but Ritchie would be a 4th line banger
Iβve always been a fan of barbashev and would love to see him on the rangers at any point. Like Kreider, he has quite an outlier year last year offensively iirc than the rest of his years to this point.
Acciari is a decent player too. Nothing wrong with him, heβs a slight upgrade imo over leschyshyn.
Dabbling around the edges and slight upgrades might be the way drury goes. In my opinion the organization and drury have a slightly different approach to this window and the next couple of seasons.
Iβd hazard a guess that if some ranger fans put out their post deadline lineup thereβd be slight changes but nothing that addressed what ails the team or improvements to it that gave it a better chance at winning in the post season.
As has been pointed out by many at many different times and placesβ¦guys that will make a difference will cost.
Acciari is a significant upgrade over leschyshyn.
Personally Iβd prefer drury look at a sturm/Meier package or an Oβreilly/barbashev package. Boeser/schenn? Monahan/Anderson anyone? Maybe not a package at all just one guy from different teams. Good names out there mentioned by a lot of folks here and elsewhere.
Theyβll most likely add some sort of d depth as well (I mentioned schenn above) or at least you hope they do. The top 6 d with harpur isnβt bad but one injury and youβre in trouble.
Lots of frequent names out there and always some surprises.
No problem with centers there but wit Horvat moved, O’Reilly price has probably increased ..Sturm has 2 more years at 2M –not sure they can fit him
I personally think acciari is an upgrade over leschyshyn but a slight one all all things considered at the 4C position. He gets like 14 minutes a night on the blues and wonβt see that here unless he is taking the Chytil spotβ¦which would be an upgrade there as well.
Heβs more physical than either guy, can score some points, and has a slightly better faceoff % than leschyshyn and much better than Chytil.
Again, an upgrade but depending on the ice time he gets and the position he plays will depend on how significant of impact/upgrade he would be.
Fwiw, Iβd rather see leschyshyn as an extra forward and not in the starting lines. 4C needs an upgrade regardless, bot sure thatβs what Iβd get acciari for.
They can fit sturm easier than they can fit Chytil.
but they can find a cheaper Sturm rather than replacing Chytil
Supposedly Edmonton is hot for Bjukstad. He very cheap, and having a decent season.
Bdl
I heard that too
Bobbyo
Maybe. Maybe not. Depends on the ask of Chytil etc. But I get itβ¦hall of famer and vital just like vitaly.
π€·π»ββοΈ
dont see Drury subtracting a contributing forward in any trade if he’s going for it…maybe after season
Weβve all seen it countless times, a bunch of one dimensional players on an nhl team that donβt win. We all know itβs about guys in roles and those guys doing their job in that role. It has to be a mix.
At a third line centre on a GG team in a win now mode with limited cap flexibilityβ¦a player like sturm at 2 mil is better than a guy like Chytil at 2.3 in that role by a bit. Sturm at 2 and Chytil at 4β¦itβs not even close imo and it shouldnβt be regardless of our feeling for Chytil. Itβs understanding the cap and the role and wanting the team to win.
Bobbyo
Absolutely could be a summer move which I have said countless times. They can add bigger names now and make the necessary cost cutting move in the summer if they chose. Itβs why it depends on the deal and who or what going each way.
If they plan to improve thΓ© playoff roster and overall roster they can use the same acquisition to do both and the payment/consequence can be split. Doesnβt change the cap or what the payment/consequence may end up being.
By the way, Lou finally got his 9th pick back. Ten years ago the Devils traded their 9th overall pick to Vancouver for Cory Schneider. Vancouver selected Bo Horvat with that pick
Iβd rather see acciari than Chytil at the third line centre of a GG team. Thatβd be a good upgrade in regards to cap and role.
Ilb
Lmaoβ¦thatβs right. I remember that now!!
Chytil asking for Depends?
Acciari to 3rd line center makes Chytil a wing –does that mean they don’t bring in a physical winger? If they beef up the 4th line with Acciari they would another checking center to rely on -and GG can roll 4 lines
Coos
Yeah, he wanted astronaut diapers but the cap wouldnβt allow it.
GG wonβt role 4 lines βevenlyβ (just look at his power play unit time allocations). Despite what most of us think he should do, it wonβt happen.
Regardless, none of that would preclude the addition of a physical winger.
So where would Chytil be playing if he’s not traded of course
My personal opinion is no player on the roster should be danced around subtracting if the addition results in a better overall roster. That includes laffo busto, Kakko, Chytil, etc.
ThΓ© deal (or deals) have to make sense both now (ie playoffs) and medium/long term in the case of kakko and laffo busto (due to cap and current contract).
Depends on the add and other deals.
Not to mention drury has to have some idea of his next contract ask etc. What is the contract and or ask of the inbound player or players and their roles.
Nothing is a simple this for that and hopefully drury is well aware of that (which Iβm sure he is).
In your simple scenario of acciari is the only add and he is put at third line centre, yes you put Chytil on wing most likely on the third line.
RIP Bobby Hull.
Who is the 4C then? It aint gonna be Leschychen or Brodz … and if he’s not gonna play 4th line much it won’t be Goodrow.
You just asked if acciari was third line centre where would Chytil beβ¦
Depends on other adds as I have said numerous times.
I also never said either of those guys would be 4C and brodzinski isnβt an nhl player imo and Iβve never been a fan of him in that spot.
ok ..was curious who you envisioned there …think a 4C is needed
Does the Rangers organization truly believe a couple moves will make legitimate contenders for some Stanley pie? Or are they merely just trying to play a round or two? If the latter I think they should hold onto their assets and ride the ponies that are in their own stable and really see what you have. As draft day nears if they have been faithful to their work they will be more clearly able to assess their in a calmer situation and hopefully then begin to really build something.
Of course I could be way off here and if I am I know you guys will not hesitate to make that clear to me.
One last thing….too often they go for it by giving up assets for a guy or guys who may have one more go in them…and it doesn’t work 99% of the time. The result is a middling team not good enough to win it all not bad enough to make the tournament and arrange tee times within a week or two. We have all seen this movie before. I for one would like a happy ending for a change even if I have to wait just a bit longer. The other option means a never ending wait with the resounding echo of this one will last a lifetime.
Bobbyo
They do, many here have been saying that all season.
Itβs not the only thing they need nor is it the biggest need, but it is a need.
Itβs one of the easier ones to address between now and the deadline. ThΓ©y have βadequateβ in house options but they are no means ideal by any stretch and none are guys Iβd prefer to see there.
So, some idiot in writing about the passing of Bobby Hull has decided to remind us that he apparently beat his wife which of course is not good. And he apparently has been quoted as saying Hitler had some good ideas. He may indeed have had a good idea or two….after all he ran away when the Beer Hall Putsch failed…that was a good idea.
However, having a good idea here and there does not mean he wasn’t evil….he sure was.
As far as Hull is concerned do these guys really have to beat on him at this time? Pathetic and classless.
Oh…as far as His Hitler comment it’s just smarter if you have dumb to say, to not say it.
I was in Gettysburg one day browsing at the shops and noticed avender selling shirts celebrating the Wermacht complete with Swastika. I asked the lady if this was a good idea. She told me that was their flag. Since I was aware that I wasn’t born five minutes before I asked that question I naturally already knew that. She clearly was either clueless about the significance of it, was an idiot or a Nazi. I shook my head walked away knowing I had an anecdote that would, I hate to say this, last a lifetime.
My after deadline Rangers lineup.
Panarin, Zibanejad, Domi
Kreider, Trochek, Comtois
Kids
Goodrow, Bjukstad, Vesey
Lindgren, Fox
Miller, Trouba
Chychrun, Schneider.
Bdl….. seems nice but unfortunately also a pipe dream.
Well upon further reflection…..sell it me. Maybe a miracle can happen. Rangers win the Cup and Sam retires to play with his grandchildren.
Bdl
You should be the rangers GM. Youβve added chychrun and Comtois without giving up a roster player of significance (chychrun especially). There must be nothing left in the system except Rydahl, Domingue, and the Hartford staff.
My big trade was the Chychrun trade, but I managed to get Bjukstad as well.
1st rounder, Kravtsov, Jones, and Laba.
Domi for a pick.
Comtois, for Grubbe, and either Berard, or Sykora.
I donβt love trading Grubbe and Laba. With their size and style of play, they are going to find roles in the NHL. Berard and Sykora are redundant.
Rich…good old Uncle Larry trying to cancel Bobby Hull before the body is cold ..Classy
thats alot of sandpaper BDL!
Well Bobby we at least know for sure that classy Larry, not be confused with ashy Larry, didn’t that from one of us this time.
Let me do it correctly this time
Bobby…we at least know that Classy Larry, not to confused with Ashy Larry, didn’t poach that from one of us on this occasion.
Ok…that looks better. I should start a go fund me so I can hire a proof reader. That way maybe I won’t be confused with an illiterate.
Sam is a dishonest inveterate Pollyanna shill who irkingly always finds a way to praise mediocracy and even blatant incompetence. Joe ain’t much better, if not worse. However, compared to the other magpie, yakking, laughing ninnies on other hockey broadcasts, they’re still superior.
Current playoff odds. Very interesting
https://moneypuck.com/predictions.htm
Very interesting indeed.
Assdancers have an equal chance to win the Cup or the Draft Lottery⦠at 2.6%. Excellent
Got no problem with Brooks’ article on Hull. Great hockey player, but he beat up women and thought Hitler had some good ideas. Nothing classy about that.
I’ve read some balanced obits for the Golden Jet that touched on the great and not so great. I don’t think I’ll read Brooksie’s.
Iβm not interested.
I never saw Hull play, and while I respect and admire his achievements on the ice, Iβm not interested in an old jockβs opinions and/or antics were back in the day.
Hey, he got Pride Night out of the news. The Rangers can thank Bobby for that. He was exciting to watch play. Like an OV or McDavid. Today he would be a generational talent.
Okay. All youse guys are playing armchair gm and making all kinds of trades to win us a Stanley Cup. I’m going to try a different avenue.
Do you think that Sam knows of the curse he put on the team back in ’94? He has to, right? Somebody must have told him. Do you think he would have the power to lift the curse, somehow? Maybe by publicly stating that what he meant to say was, “And the MEMORY of this one will last a lifetime!” Drury can trade whomever he wants- the Rangers will win nothing without Sam lifting the curse!
Eddie J
I’m not a superstitious guy but I don’t discount the possibility of curses in sports. A year or so ago I made the same claim. So there’s that!
Uncle Larry reading the blog again and mentioning our trade candidates
https://nypost.com/2023/01/31/patrick-kane-may-no-longer-be-trade-deadline-fit-for-rangers/
Good morning, boneheads!
Happy 26th, Admiral!
And to add to your Bday- the Fishsticks are all but done. With or without Horvat
And you’re right, bobbyo. The only name in this article that we haven’t discussed is Lucic. Maybe because most of us think Lucic is done?
Admiral
Happy 26th live long and prosper!
Akbar
Happy 26th!!!! Itβs a trap!!!!
At what point does brooks just need to cite the blog in every article?! I mean we talked about Jeannot last year. Motte as well. Tarastinko for several seasons. Bjugstad has been mentioned on and off for 3 or 4 years that I remember. Lucic 10 years ago lol.
He leads with Kane in the title though to get clicks lol
Happy 26th AA!
Is Larry Norm? Or just the norm?
Larry is Bdl..we established this long ago π
Pretty sure his βBdlβ call sign is just Larry Ditto Brooks in reverse.
πππ€£ππ
I know the owner has love affair with WEST POINT, but what a totally ridiculous name, ‘GOLDEN KNIGHTS.’
Brooks even mis-spells words daily just to throw us off.
NFL has awarded San Fran 7 points for following, indeed innovating diversity protocol and the EAGLES 2. Super Bowl 2023 on February 12 will begin with the score 7-2.
I’m confused. SF is not in the Superbowl. How many points does KC bring with them? Also do they count against the spread because these events only exist now as a vehicle for betting. Just ask Hank.
Just seeing who’s paying attention. π
Wicky
I completely forgot about that!
St Pete
