Rangers-1, Hurricanes-3

Good morning, Boneheads!

I’m curious to find out how many reviews went their way this postseason. I don’t think it’d change much, and I’m not into any conspiracy theories. Really, just curious.

Here is stuff for you to read, click here and here.

We absolutely exploded with 7 shots in the third after 5 each in the first two. Way to take it to ’em, boyos.

Until the Rangers ice an effective checking line and we all know what that means we’ll probably never make it to the SCF’s.

Panarin, Kreider, and Lafreniere on the left side. One of them needs to be eliminated of moved to the right. And I suggest it not be Laffo-Busto. A 3rd line of Goodrow, Blais, and Copp might just be what the Dr. ordered!

There’s this guy who wears #21 and another who wears #91. Those guys are pretty good checkers. They may not be ready, but they’re both skating. If they can hang on long enough, Goodrow especially will help.

Carp was piling on GG last night. (as if Quinn would have gotten them this far and would have won at least one of those games in Carolina 🙄) Kind of embarrassing.

canes are now 7-0 since the playoffs started so even if the rangers win game 6 they haven’t showed any reason for me to think they could win game 7, it’s over.

They were awful lay night but there defensive structure (and Igor) kept them in the game. DQ never would have done that. Carp just keeps chewing on that same bone. Let it go!

  13. Gravy Avatar

NYR need a forechecking line, not a checking line. When their rush game doesn’t work, there’s not a second “style” to shift to right now. That’s where Goodrow would help.

Also maybe calling interference on one of the Canes’ pick plays.

  14. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

They don’t will board battles in either end, their passing was dreadful last night and the FOs went in the can after the first period. They seem intimidated either by the situation and/or the Canes’ physicality. They need to fix these things to move up to the next level. I doubt they can do it before Saturday but they have proved me wrong before.

  15. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

The interference won’t be called. It’s part of the game now. They’ll call one occasionally after a FO but not any other times. They set more picks than Golden State did last night. Maybe the Ranger have to start calling them out for their teammates like you do in a BB game.

  16. Gravy Avatar
    Gravy

I’m still surprised Hunt hasn’t made it into a game or two. I think he and Motte would add some pace to the fourth line. Gallant likes to play them a lot. Reaves hasn’t done anything particularly wrong, but they haven’t been able to sustain much of a forecheck with that combo. KK does fine on the boards but doesn’t fit on the fourth.

At the end of the day, though, it comes down to just an overall bad game for just about all the skaters.

  17. Gravy Avatar
    Gravy

Agree it’s not going to get called. What frustrates me is I don’t see NYR picking or slowing down the Canes. Think that’s something they would have picked up.

  18. tomk19 Avatar
    tomk19

I don’t think they’re intimidated by Carolina. Not even a little bit. Carp kept saying how lame the “we looked tired” explanation was. They did look tired and I’m sure it’s as much mental as physical.

They didn’t have the puck enough and they kept giving it back to the Canes. We know Carolina is relentless with their forecheck and their backcheck. That means guys without the puck have to get open and guys with the puck need to be decisive and play fast. Agree with Gravy, when the Rangers dumped it in there was very little or no forecheck. Some of that might have been by design by Mike Kelly and GG, but not in the 3rd period.
Win or lose tomorrow, that won’t be the case in game 6. Kreider and Strome need big games.

Rangers did all of these things, (interfered with their forecheckers, got in on their own forecheck, won board battles, etc.), in games 3 & 4. They’re perfectly capable. I’d consider putting Hunt in too. Fresh legs.

This series painfully reminds me of the Tampa series in 2015. I hope of course that it has a different outcome. However, being a Ranger fan does not exactly breed confidence. Ranger playoff hockey is like seeing the same movie on a loop hoping for a different ending.

Unfortunately, we know not what is said between periods by GG. Heck we don’t even know everything he says on the bench.

But does seem that he may be a little too much of a players coach if he isn’t reading them the riot act at some point last night over the lack of effort. I’m not big on individual shaming in public but have no problem with calling a time out and giving it to the group.

re: ORF’s ‘FRAGILE’ – Some years past, I rented an old Waterfrlnt Victorian in Connecticut and it had a balky heating system. The owner sent me this repairman who got the thing running and the house heated. I asked him for his phone # in case the problem recurred and he wrote on a piece of paper ‘Mike Furnace’ and his home number. I for a very long time assumed that his name was Mike Furnace until one day I realized that he had written Mike…furnace. and that was not his name, but rather his vocation. 🙂

Can very easily see Rangers winning tonight. 2 pp goals no shorthanded goals and great goaltending we have all seen before.
I have a question for all of youse. We would all love to see two more wins and more hockey. That goes without saying. BUT . These are the NY Rangers so heartbreak is just around the corner. So here we go. Would you rather have them win tonight and lose in Carolina or just get it over with tonight? You know if we win tonight we will have 2 days of how bad Miller,The Bread man and everyone else is. If they lose tonight we get all have a decent holiday weekend and then have our post-mortem next week and until the beginning of training camp. Just like to know how you guys feel.

  76. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

Panarin has been one of the NHL’s top 10 forwards since coming to New York three years ago. He is as electric as they come. Now, he is unplugged, looking dazed and confused. It hasn’t been pretty. I have no solution to offer. It is simply (well, obviously not) on Panarin to figure this out. It would be helpful if No. 10 could do it before 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Very well said, if still obvious to most on here. I’d say if you are playing injured and are unable to be at the same elite level, then it is imperative to minimize errors which Panarin has not done. Start with eliminating the blind sweep pass while against the boards… which always ends up an odd man rush to our net.

I worry too that some players may have been reading this “house money” nonsense on the blog. This is a team two wins from the conference final.

Whether they are getting there early or late, they are on the doorstep and can’t waste the opportunity. There is no guaranty they will be back next year even if they are a “better” team. The time is now, stop f’ing around.

  79. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

Craig, Brooks has used that for quite a few years now. CK earned it and its just a more polite way of repeating what is said on here over and over – where the F was Kreider last night? I think even the NY Post would frown on that language!

  80. CraigWeather Avatar
    CraigWeather

    Beezle,

You really think they even know this blog exists?

  81. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

It’s so weird, what is being said about Kreider now is no different than what was said about him for a long time but ridiculed when it was here on the blog because of a career year in goals.

A person or two may actually see the complete picture on the guy whether he is scoring goals or not and not letting the goal scoring cloud other overrated parts of his game.

It’s also strange because folks do it to Panarin all the time despite his points totals. I think most here get the panarin $$$ make him a target but having big Jesper around at his $$$$$ when he isn’t being career year cheechoo and is the enigma while causing lw lineup logjams and not playing the right for whatever reason…well, it’s not helping the cap crunch either.

    Just a weird dynamic IMO.

  82. St Pete Eli Avatar

It is obvious on the road Kreider can’t handle Fast or is it Fast is handling Kreider?

  83. Wicky Avatar

Regarding carp, he isn’t “writing” anywhere.

He is, for lack of a better term, just being a fan. He’s posting thoughts on Twitter and many seem to be more emotional than logical, just like many fans.

For someone be who said he wasn’t a fan though, he really seems vested in sour grapes and some very “playing favourites” takes about certain things with the club.

  84. Pete Avatar
    Pete

kreider has been a ghost most of these playoffs and deserves all the criticism he is getting. But Panarin has been more of an active detriment in my opinion and makes nearly double what kreider makes, so the expectations of him should be that much higher as should the criticism when he doesn’t deliver:

  85. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

If “big studly all world amazing leader and hugger” cheechoo can’t handle a road matchup or continuously be present on the ice and lead by example overtly physically, well perhaps he isn’t quite deserving of all the accolades and his high horse position of beyond reproach given to him by many fans simply for having a career year in goals.

Enjoy the career year goals, don’t be ridiculous about what the overall player actually is.

And no, I’m not Brooks…I’m telling you guys it’s Bdl.

  90. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

I’ll put this as the way I see it fwiw…

Guys get paid that produce points, Panarin has always been a point producer. Panarin generally plays a high risk, high reward game. Panarin generally produces assists more than goals. Panarin plays a lot of perimeter hockey. Panarin got paid a lot to do what he does and what he does is a lot easier to do in the regular season than the playoffs.

Does he deserve criticism? absolutely!!! Does he need to do more? Ideally. Is it shocking the way he has played considering playoff hockey and his playing style? Nope.

  91. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

Wicky at this point someone needs to pull Panarin aside and tell him to do less. At least until he gets back in sync. Sometimes a step back breathes new life..

  92. Beezle Avatar

Minx I’m afraid that EV and I scalped the rest of the Lexus Ledge suite as there were no takers here before today.

  93. Wicky Avatar

Kreider on the other hand, is a larger player that used to play a very physical game but hasn’t for 6 or 7 years now. He is a good nhl player having a career year in the goals department that is capable of playing excellent hard nosed, physical hockey.

Kreider however is MIA unless he scores for the majority of the playoffs.

While Panarin makes more money, Kreider is hands down the bigger disappointment in the playoffs IMO because of what he is capable of when not scoring versus what Panarin is.

The “leadership” many fans talk about with Kreider only seems to appear when he scores a goal, throws an iPad, or hugs guys after games…it’s simply not enough.

    He’s a bigger disappointment IMO.

    St Pete
Since the 2014/2015 season he hasn’t been the same. I absolutely think the clot had (and rightfully so) impact on him.

My point is and has been, he isn’t this amazing beastly physical player many folks talk like he is. He’s more of a positionally sound player that until this career year, averaged low 20s in goals and points in the 40s.

He’s a good player and a longtime ranger, both things worth rooting for…just not to the ridiculous levels some fans try to put him at.

The reason Carolina is able to control the matchups is because the Rangers do not have a checking center/line. Gallant can’t say, fine you go with Staal against Zibanejad, but we are putting so and so against Aho. The Rangers don’t have so and so as the 3C, they have Chytil. It’s all about the matchups. It was in the first round, and it is in this round.

  99. Bdl Avatar

Gallant needs to make his disadvantage, an advantage. Carolina wants Staal v Zibanejad, and Fast v Kreider. Split Kreider and Zibanejad up. Make Carolina choose. Fast v Kreider, or Staal v Zibanejad, but not both.
