Rangers-2, Devils-5

Published by

Good morning, boneheads!

I haven’t felt the way I feel this morning since…I can’t even remember. Dark ages?

After two solid games against the Bruins they came out without any purpose and any structure. Against the team that hasn’t played for over two weeks and only practice once. Whose fault is it? Coaching staff, there is no way around it.

I do not remember how Trouba got injured. But I also do not remember most of that game.

(These are all common phrases Sam and joe use, which is the best part; it actually reads like you could hear them saying it )

Sam: and it went in. Ohhh joe, I think it went in….. off Johnson’s helmet?

Joe: The knob the knob. actually Sam it was the knob of Johnson’s stick. It careemed off Johnson’s knob and in for the score.

Sam: I bet he’ll take it however he can get it right now

    Joe: so would I Haha

    Sam: Me too hahaaaha

Also watched Pionk tonight. Have come to the realization that the Rangers just can’t recognize/develop talent. Think how many good players slipped thru their fingers while they bought the shiniest bauble out there. And many of these players became good just after the Rangers let them go. Look at what they’re doing now. Lafreniere, Kakko, Anderson, Kravsov, I can go on and on. (but for the beer). It just seems like they just can’t keep the right guys, trade for the wrong guys, and it’s not a recent phenomenon. This has been going on for YEARS! I know every trade doesn’t work out, but how does a competent? organization make this many wrong moves?

    Good morning, boneheads!
Pionk is better than Trouba. Right. If DeAngelo was playing in Winnipeg he’d be better than Trouba too. If you were looking at their stats, that is. Pionk is playing for a perennial Cup contender, Trouba is playing for the youngest team in the league in the midst of painful re-stew with still questionable defensive structure. Let’s see who is better when both teams are contending.

  28. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

If i could go back and re-visit that trade, knowing what I know now, I’d try to include someone else in that trade instead of Pionk. But if I was given no choice, I make that trade anyway.

Ledge is full in Rangertown the last few days. I’d like to have seen faster improvement, but this is the price of rebuilding. Lots of inconsistency and losing games that could have been won. Not expecting playoffs, but need to see improvement the last 3/4 of the season.

  30. Old Ranger Fan Avatar

Let’s see if the Devil game was a one game failure of the defensive structure they had been developing or it is a longer term trend. Maybe we overreacted. I can tolerate losing close checking low scoring games. No shows are harder to swallow.

Having Trouba on your team is not a bad thing. Paying him too flight top pair money for a looooong time in a hard cap league is the issue. Also get very concerned when a players top attribute from brass is leadership….
    .
It’s not about who was traded but proper asset management. Is the brass effectively assessing talent and making the best trade of assets to put together a cup contender.
The answer is mixed, only time will tell. Somehow the great deals they were able to get to address the middle were not cup contending 2way players.
Lots of good news with the talent pipeline. But it takes time….

SN, I would say look at almost if not every NHL team and you’ll find at least one D man that’s making that kind of money. If there isn’t one, they’re either in persuit of one or they will eventaully have to pay one of their young D men (think Q Hughes) that kind of money to retain him.

In other words, D men are overpaid in this league. It’s been that way for a long time. The best you can do as a Gm is eventually give the right guy one of those bad deals..

  43. SN Avatar

  61. James G Avatar
    James G

Right, SN. Imagine last year’s offense with the D this team has played the majority of the time this season…They averaged nearly 3 1/2 goals per game last year. They’re averaging under 2 1/2 this year.

  62. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

    Trouba 6’3″ 209lb $8M 492G 49/160/209 (0.425ppg)
    Pionk $3M 6’0″ 186lb 188G 15/83 (0.521ppg)

Pionk more mobile, the better offensive talent and still an RFA next year. Trouba, with 300 more games, is the better defender – but I’m not sure $5M better or that PigOink’s defense does not improve to narrow/close that gap. Of course, salary likely to close too but gap will remain for at least a few more years.

No doubt, Trouba is the bigger body which he does sometimes use to our advantage. But to Olga’s point, yes, NYR do seem to give up on guys just before they break out. Personally, I’d be fine with Fox/Lindgren Miller/Pionk and a more traditional shutdown third pair. Gorton was not, or did not envision it.

  63. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

James part of the better defense comes at the expense of offense, at least for a while.

  64. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

BTW – I’m not hating on Trouba but am a little underwhelmed.

  65. James G Avatar
    James G

Beezle- agreed. But at the same time I think some of the forwards have been worse defensively this year. Zibanejad, Strome, Howden have all been worse. Rooney hasn’t been great. That’s every center on the team except Chytil who didn’t look terrible before he was injured.

  66. SN Avatar
    SN

Imagine if Bev was given a decent partner at the start instead of the corpse of Jack’s Johnson. Maybe he wouldn’t have slammed the gate so hard…
His absence is directly impacting the offense, no doubt about it, esp when replaced with Bitteto, who I am a fan of but different skill set.

  67. James G Avatar
    James G

Not to downplay Tony D’s offensive impact but I think it has more to do with Panarin. When one of the most talented hockey players in the league gets rolling in a career year everyone looks better as far as numbers. And the team’s offense looks a lot deadlier than it actually is.

Yup. The hand-wringing here over Pionk is ironic considering he was a favorite whipping boy while a Ranger.

Pionk was a guy who went coast-to-coast in a game as a defenseman — that certainly did show that the kid had talent.

  78. ilb2001 Avatar

Beezle, take a look at Pionk’s numbers in NY and Winnipeg separately. And then compare them to Trouba’s.

  79. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

The argument is that when both teams are contending ( providing Winnipeg is still contending then) Torouba will be more valuable in NY than Pionk in Winnipeg, and definitely more valuable than Pionk would’ve been in NY.

  80. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

There were times in this league when offensive minded D-men were a hot commodity and took a lot of assets to trade for ( Alex Goligosky trade, anyone?) And stay at home D-men were dime a dozen. It’s all different now. The hottest commodity on defense now is a D-man with size, mean streak, who can be matched with top lines and brings some offense.

Ilb – not sure where you are going with the look at them seperate. Trouba 8/42/50 in 82 games for wpg in 18/19, Pionk 6/39/45 in 71 in 19/20? Wpg had 99 pts in 18/19 and 80 in 19/20 (92 on a full season). Trouba averaged 22:53, Pionk 23:23.

As to NYR time, Trouba 7g 20a in 70 last year vs Pionk 6g 20a in 73 the year before – a worse team and his first full season.

Clearly they bring different things to the ice, but I do think Olga’s point is mostly valid in that mgt (and fans) have often underestimated what the young guys become and overestimated the ‘gems’ they trade for or buy.
