Good morning, boneheads!
Happy Father’s Day, everyone! Another one of those holidays when Zoom doesn’t cut it. But that’s the absurd reality we are living in.
We have plenty of dads on this blog. Some brand new. I hope you all spend this day with your kids. And your dads, if you can.
Meantime, there are some hockey news. We have firm dates on the restart of this season. I’m not sure “firm” is something you can use this days though. Click here to read LB’s article.
UPDATE (6/23): Click here to read Carp’s new article.

First things first… FIRST.
Happy Father’s Day! 💙
Got me-self a great present! 👶
Thanks again for all the wishes, guys!
James,
I do not see how any sport, at this date can play. Once one player tests positive during the reset, two teams would have to be quarantined. Trying to play under those conditions is not practical. That is why I said what I said. If they want to play, they are going to have to deal with positive tests. These guys pass the flu to each other all winter long. Nobody thinks they are going to pass this virus to each other?
Happy Father’s Day to all who celebrate.
Happy Father’s Day to all you boneheads and fellow readers
CCCP strikes me as the kind of guy who’s gonna expect Father’s Day to be celebrated for a week before and week after.
Kinda like a spoiled daughter 😉
Happy Father’s Day, everyone!
Let us all be the best possible role models we can for our children.
LGR!!
Ugotz! Happy Dad’s Day to all of youse!!
Carp broke the blog.
AGAIN
Happy Pop’s day!
Happy Fathers Day you mothers !
Congrats on the baby C cube P !
We need Hockey !
Don’t think we’ll get Hockey anytime soon.
BDL- I was actually agreeing with your point that this could very well not happen. I just happen to think that’s a lot smarter than playing and treating it like the flu. We don’t need hockey bad enough that they should put players, staff and their families at risk obviously.
Happy Father’s Day btw.
James,
I’m not saying I would, I’m saying that’s the only way. And with that said, I don’t believe they choose that option, therefore season over.
ilb, any thoughts on this?

Key word: Could
Key?! His statue came down
Key never won 20 games in a season but man could he pitch.
Australia is the Key to the whole game.
Didn’t Kanye name his kid Key? (after Humphrey Bogart or Hemingway)
not a good time to be a sculptor obviously
Or is it?
true but then again what could you sculpt?
Delia, you are a flake. You have always been a flake. If you insist on frightening people, do it with your sculpture.
Good thing the Italians haven’t gotten into statue toppling. A lot of the of Romans are guys who may not stand up to scrutiny by today’s standards. And apparently there is no statu(t)e of limitations on these things.
Hockey not politics or Head Master Ilb will have the switch out again!
Sorry. I didn’t realize I was getting up to the edge there. I know we are only still in phase 1. I’ll be more careful.
CCCP Congratulations Health & Happiness To You’re Family.
Caught Duguay’s podcast with Jay Wells…good stuff …spoke of Lowe and Larmer as unsung heroes of 94 squad. Lowe was key playing with young Zubov and got Messier to push right buttons as leader and calm down a bit. He was more emotional season before Lowe arrived.
Good morning, boneheads!
I hope you all had a great Father’s Day.
Rob, I saw that. I think I mentioned it before, but that a virus gets weaker is Virology 101. Any virus is only interested in its own survival. If it kills every host, the virus is dead after the last host dies. It will get weaker in order to propagate while producing very little symptoms. There are problems with this too, mainly related to humans interfering with this natural course. Take the Flu, for instance. We have created a vaccine against it. Flu virus adapted to this and it’s mutating very often. The Flu vaccine has to be produced every year, sometimes blindly by predicting its possible mutation.
As far as this Covid-19 goes. That this virus is getting weaker has been reported by many countries. We are seeing this here too. But the data isn’t firm yet. Most viral labs reporting that the virus isn’t mutating much yet, good news in terms of creating the vaccine against it. But we can only hope that this virus becomes less aggressive, and when the vaccine is available, we can control it better. But I have my doubts that this virus will disappear on its own.
Post above updated, Carp’s new article.
If virus weakening that would be great… you have to wonder why weakening virus has been reported by many countries but has gotten little coverage here
bobbyo, there are articles. Just Google it.

Opening PO at July, 30, conveniently coincide with my B.D. Very symbolic and well deserved, gift. LGR!
got that Ilb but really no mainstream media (larger outlets or news organizations) have mentioned
The virus is getting weaker…and Leon is getting LARRRRRGERRRR?
MSM not giving you real news?! S H O C K E R! 🙂
Colonel Sanders next to be removed from the box? 🙂
Interesting, ilb. Virus Anthropomorphism. I have also noted that lawns exist only by tricking us into mowing and fertilizing them.
I have a step ladder. Never knew my real ladder.
Few times in my life I met my creator, but every time he didn’t like what he saw and sent me back to my misery…
The New Jersey Devils have narrowed down their head coaching candidates to five, per Elliotte Friedman.

The best path forward for the Sabres is pretty simple, although naseauting to stomach at first.
They need to trade eichel to re-flush the organization and hope/expect they will land another couple top 5 picks in the next 2 years of their own. Dahlin hopefully grows into the top dog, and in 2 years of development your hoping your young players and prospect are growing into bonafide pros while getting two super high draft picks through the growing pains.
It’s just not possible to to inject and fill the holes they have in a reasonable window in which eichel will be willing to deal with growing pains without trading him. If you keep him, your praying your a playoff team somehow going forward which means you’d never have a chance at top 3-top 5 picks the next 2 years (so with eichel, and doing everything you can to get into the playoffs to appease him, your not in the game for landing your next 18 YO franchise player, that you can hopefully get the most of next go around) all the other teams would have all the leverage in the world in trade talks to improve your team, and you don’t have anyone else with the trade value who could add to eichel like trading eichel and adding to Dahlin and gearing for 2023 could.
It’s inevitable, they are not gonna be able to turn themselves into winners and it isn’t worth the longterm ramfications of trying to do so (when I Think eichel bound to leave before His contract is up no matter what they do) to win with eichel.
And I was wondering while the comments were closed if botterill and his entire team got fired for approaching Pegula on a trade
Where’s the troll
I’ve been trying to catch up on hockey podcasts and I must have been watching different games than a couple of guys. I have seen zero from chytil that has shown he can or should be a second line centre next season (whenever that is). His scoring rate and positional play show a young guy still learning, what is wrong with him at 3C for the next season or two?
He-Tell needs to start thinking a little more on the ice; should come with age but now he is running around like a 8 year old kid on Halloween night after consuming a bag of candy.
.
Too bad there isn’t an all-world forward on the team for him to learn how to play the game at a high level…
Wicky
Now do Howden 😀
Cccp
Howden has been a bit of a disappointment to me this season. With his tool set, he should be better than what he is imo. I don’t mind his offencive numbers to this point because he has always projected to be a two way guy, but I feel like his defencive game has not been as strong. Again, young guy but regressed a bit to me this season defencively.
Now do Jagr! LOL
Jagr
Lol…$$$$$$
I think Chytil improved a ton from last year to this year, but I agree with Wicky, third line center for the next season is fine. Make him take it from Strome.
I don’t think Howden regressed this season, but I don’t think he progressed either. Basically the same player from last season.
There is a lot of noise from fans that Chytil would have the same amount of points that Strome has if Chytil played with Panarin. My question is, would Panarin still have 97 points if he played with Chytil, instead of Strome.
Good morning, boneheads!
I think one of many reasons they need to retain Strome is to give Chytil another year or so to grow into the second line center role. If you look at this chart, you can see that the TOI difference between Strome and Chytil is around 5 min. That is a big difference. Also, if you want to give Chytil and Kakko more ice time, it’s going to have to be at someone’s expense.
Another thing. What this chart shows is that there isn’t a single regular center whose FO% clicks at 50%. None. That needs to be addressed, in my opinion. Too often they lose puck possession because of it and get pinned in their own zone. LOL@Smith leading it at 100%! Where is Stu Bickel?
Kakko ice time, I think, is eventually going to come at the expense of Buchnevich. I still feel they need a straight ahead right shot RW with size to play with Panarin. Maybe that’s Gauthier. Really haven’t seen enough of him to know.
2C Stromeo!
Do they go out and get a MacTavish type to take critical faceoffs or can any of these guys get better? I though Mika had been above 50% in the past. Another thing that stands out on that chart is Trouba’s -12. It’s a flawed metric, but , that’s not a great number for a guy with his price tag.
If you want to talk about +/-, and I do understand it’s not a very useful stat, but I think it has some value. Look who stands out. Fox and Lindgren are +22 and +16 respectively. Tony DeAngelo is +12. Considering he gets a lot of his points on PP, it’s pretty impressive. And, of course, Panarin is +36. Bottom line with Panarin, if he is on the ice the opposition should expect to be scored on. But we already know that.
Last one. Kaapo Kakko is -26. Yikes.
Based on longevity of the intermission, whatever is coming starting July,30, is more like exhibition games before start of a new season,. than continuation of current. Timewise and rustwise.
Is the draft lottery this Friday?
I like howden a lot but wouldn’t be against the team having a 4C that wins draws routinely that can be deployed in critical situations (to ilb’s point).
agree on 4c with face off skills but can’t overpay for 4th liner
Chytil didn’t look comfortable handling top six minutes. We don’t need to revisit the theory of “just throw him out there and let him figure it out”. Let him take a full year at 3C. He’ll play with some skill on his wings and score a bunch while still being protected by having Strome play with Panarin. First two guys to play together, have career seasons and cause anger and frustration to their fan base as a result.
Certainly wouldn’t mind someone like Boyle or Thornton on a short term to add their value at the dot and play 4th line. Howden could play wing without much disruption to the rest of the lineup.
The real issue now in regards to UFAs is that the “NY Appeal” for athletes has lost its luster considering the state of the world.
Except for Hank. Can’t get rid of him if we tried ; )
Ilb – two problems. First, that was not a heat map. Many boneheads only understand the heatmap 😉
Second, NHL does provide a more comprehensive table of FO data by zone. Link here for the past two seasons to smooth things out.
Arbitrarily using 90 FO as a cut on the two seasons,
In the Dzone the only one over 50% is McKegg (52%) Ironically, Lisa is at 49%. Quantity wise, the top 4 (Mika, Strome, Howden, Hayes) all are about 46%.
Strome is the best in the Ozone at just over 52%, Howden close at just under 52%. Mike at 51 and Hayes was 49. Kreider should never take an Ozone FO – 36% is killer. McKegg is at 48 on 60, so under the cutoff.
In the neutral zone, keep it away from Strome (43%) and definitely don’t let DonC anywhere near it (34%). Mika at just under 52%, Hayes was just over 51%. Howden just under 48. Boo at just over 47.
On the PP (and I assume in the Ozone), Strome is lights out at 57%. Short handed, Strome needs a light (34%) Howden is their best SH at just shy of 49%.
James in my book Chytil can be 3C until he is 25 with no problem. Instant gratification is not how to develop players for the long haul and may be damaging. I can envision Strome re-signed and him and Chytil switching lines in the last year of his contract if the Don has played to that level consistently.
I am a little different than most when it comes to plus/minus STATS. I think it’s a useful STAT if you watch the game. There is a reason certain guys always have a good plus/minus. It’s because they are good players, who’s team scores more goals than the let up when they are on the ice. It’s not an accident the Derek Stepan is + 100 for his career, and Chris Kreider is + 68. They are good players.
Agree with you guys saying chytil isn’t ready and shouldn’t be thrust into 2c. That 3rd line deployment is ideal for him, kakko and whoever grabs the other way.
I think +/- is a very important telling stat in a couple ways. Anybody averaging 10+Mins a game and is a + (that’s a telling stat. He takes a steady shift and he’s a +). Any 1st line F or 1st pairing D who’s in the double digits minus wise (that’s telling they can’t hold their own for their deployment)
Josh Andersson had success being that guy on panarin’s other wing. It will
Be interesting to see what happens with that guy next season, on and off the ice.
Lastly I was banging the pans for Brian Boyle all summer. And I think it didn’t happen bc Gorton and company wanted to leave the center ice deployments open hoping all 3 kids (chytil, howden, anderssen) would grab them as the year went on.
Remember they wanted the kids to force strome to W in training camp. They were hoping it would happen.
So I think that’s why they didn’t sign Boyle, but I think given truth serum, they didn’t legitimately believe they had a shot at the playoffs, and having regretting the decision not to sign him since February
Always next season BBoyle. Your meant to have another go around with the rangers. It’s why the universe is allowing you to age well.
Most guys move on and sign long term Contracts and break the bank and a reunion is never possible before it’s too late. Bboyle on the other hand, his role means his salary is something the rangers can stomach and the universe has allowed Bboyle to age well (reminds me of a Mike Knuble, found his game in mid20s and then was able to play another 10 of so years after that)
They should bring him back For next season And beyond
I have zero interest in Boyle, and Thornton. The team plays to fast for either one of those guys. Toss in the leadership group is starting to form. This is Kreider, Panarin, and Zibanejad team.
hall of famers
iginla
hossa
lowe
doug wilson
ken holland
kim st pierre
congrats all
now add richter soon please
Guys, I think you forgot that starting end January well into February the duo of Chytil/Kakko was becoming very dangerous while on the ice. Unfortunately, in front of both nets.
“Wow, nice goal. Wasn’t that your guy?”
“No, yours”
Glad Marcel Hossa made it. One of my all-time favorite Rangers.
What was that chant at the Garden whenever both Hossa bros played in the same game? “Ours better?” Yeah… ours better lol
“Everyone makes mistakes. Don’t beat yourself up.” Jussie Smollett.
Well, clearly we also had the better Federov brother. Yup, Hossa and Fedor Federov. The only two Ranger jerseys I’VE ever owned. ; )
Sorry for the bad spelling. FedOrov.
Good morning, boneheads!
The NHL Draft tomorrow. We’ll have a Go Time posted in am.
I think fedorov (our fedorov, not the other one) is the guy bieksa beat the crap out of at a Canucks training camp night out when he was trying to get into the nhl…it clearly didn’t obstruct his path to the nhl, the Canucks signed him the next day I think.
I remember the story. Bieksa was afraid he’d be thrown out of the roster, instead Burke called him next day and signed him to his ELC.
Fedorov was huge too
BDL,
If the leadership turns out to be as effective as the face off capability on this team, I’d say we’re screwed…
We had the wrong Orr, the wrong Hossa and the wrong Fedorov.
Got the right Lundqvist though…
had the correct gretzky and messier though
Orr Federov? No Yizzes Federov.
Right Lundqvist? Are we sure about that?
Speaking of our Lundqvist.
20 years ago today. WOW.
Hank’s retirement status?
I’ve been thinking about the idea of a Boyle or Thornton as 4C….And if BDL is against it, then I definitely want one of them here next season.
Bieksa is the kind of guy that looks like he’d eat a human baby if you made him angry enough. Wish we had 3 of him on D. Circa 2007
James,
Do you think Quinn is going to have Thornton, or Boyle in the team and not over use them? Thornton would be on the top PP unit, he’d be put there down a goal with Hank pulled. Thornton would be playing 15 minutes a night. You know what that means somebody else (Chytil) wouldn’t. If you want a Boyle type on the team, find a young one. Just like they did 10 years ago when the found the original. Otherwise don’t waste my time.
Speaking of Boyle- we had both, the right one AND the wrong one.
We had the wrong stepan…;)
BDL,
52.4% on faceoffs for Boyle in 39 games. Thornton 49.4%. Sadly either of them would be ranked #1 on the Rangers in regards to faceoff win % this season.
So if by ‘over use’ you’re referring to having one of them out there as much as possible for important faceoffs then yeah he’d absolutely overuse them.
Couldn’t see either getting more time on ice than our top 3 centers. I’m sure you could though. But then again you said Kreider was good as gone ; )
Where’s E3? Still self isolated on the can?
You are dreaming James if you don’t think Quinn would play Boyle and Thornton more than Chytil. Neither guy is worth it. Let’s bring back Blair Betts and Dom Moore while we are at it. Waste of time. Moves that would be doomed to fail.
lets just double shift 2C Stromeo
Accordong to Complete Hockey News:
Jeff Bezos has purchased the naming rights to Seattle’s NHL arena and it is officially Climate Pledge Arena.
NHL Seattle and Amazon have teamed up to make the arena the first zero-carbon arena in the world, powered exclusively by renewable energy.
And with that, climate change was solved.
– The first arena to ban single-use plastics and commit to functional zero waste. Fans will see only compost and recycling bins, no trash cans.
– The first arena to fully offset the carbon emissions of all events and related transportation by fans, sports teams and entertainers, achieving carbon-neutral operations and use.
-The lowest embodied carbon arena in the world; saving the landmark roof and the new arena’s subterranean footprint significantly reduces façade materials needed and the associated greenhouse gas emissions.
-The greenest ice in the world using rainwater, refrigerants with zero greenhouse gas emissions and electric Zambonis.
-The largest coordinated effort of fan engagement with climate issues of any NHL team.
The scary part is I’m not entirely sure that is not legit.
“Climate Pledge Arena.” Cynical virtue signaling.
Greta Thunberg will be their official mascot.
The Seattle CHOPS! bring your family!
I’m pretty sure the point of the arena isn’t to “solve” the climate crisis but rather to raise awareness and show leadership in sustainable operations that other arenas and businesses can use.
Agree with BDL – as much as I like Bran Boyle, the time is past.
Toss a few names out there:
Derek Grant 51.6% overall, 49.7% Dzone, 25pts, UFA, 30yr, $700K current
Dylan Strome, 47.7%, 50.0%, RFA, 38pts, 866K
Strome is obviously more than a 4th liner and would take giving up some assets.
Advantage of Grant is he would be cheap, can put up a few points and chart boys will hate him.
When did signaling virtue become a bad thing?
Rob
I’m afraid my answer could cause this place to shut down for good… let’s just leave it at that.

Woo hoo. The Breadman with a missile across the bow of the owners and NHLPA.
You don’t have an issue with the red hat virtue signaling. Let’s just leave it at that.
GFY 🙂
Rumour has it, with a verified leak out of the Seattle organization, they are going with the team name of the Seattle Chaz
