I’ve never been a staal basher. I’m a fan of what Staal meant to our success, but….If this rebuild was serious they’d be sitting him frequently so they can play the likes of Lindgren and Hajek
He can be there to give respite to a long long season that they very well may hit a wall in. Or the youngsters may need to watch and learn from the press box on occasion. And we all know injuries happen.
Our young crop of centers and Def can learn this year and be coached up. Will also be the best way to really evaluate if they are good enough for the long haul or will they be surpassed by future top picks

On this date in hockey history, September 23nd 1972, Team Canada lost game five, the first game of the historic Summit Series played in Moscow. Soviet Union 5, Canada 4. Phil Esposito tripped on a flower stem during a pregame ceremony and gracefully bowed to the crowd with a huge grin for the fans in the first game at Moscow’s Luzhniki Ice Palace.
Esposito said that when he got up he looked into the stands directly into the eyes of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. When the guy next to him laughed, Brezhnev gave him a look that wiped the smile right off his face.

@Coos if not for a) TB choke kicker (5pts missed!) and b) TB defense emulating NYG defense, I’m guessing the spin might be a bit different today. The kid had his moments but guys were pretty wide open. And that last run.. I think anyone from this blog could have run that ball in, nobody within 20 yards.

Opening night lineup is only relevant to what they’ll be when the puck drops on the 3rd.
By the second period or the 2nd game they could be different.I understand that they need to “protect” younger players and allow them to grow but if Chytil was an NHler last season then anything is possible.
Quite frankly, I think this team stands to be wretched defensively once again as it stands.
I think Lindgren and perhaps Hajek are both needed on the big squad because they’re capable of actually defending and being strong in their own zone.
Fox isn’t going to take long to start getting burnt. He’s going to need a partner capable of defending and compensating for his gaffs. -

looking forward to the unofficial “bye week” after game 2. Hartford only has 1 game during that week off and it’s the first day (Sunday)
Cooscoos
yes Staal not up to his cap hit.
neither are Henrik, Smith, Girardi (buyout), Names, Strome and next year Shatty (huge buyout although that mirrors what his albatross contract was anyway)

And I’m with BDL. That’s the safe lineup and blatantly screams “tread water” while hoping to win a few more games because Panarin pops in a few.
This is a build? You’re really trying to take a big step? Don’t tell me you’re going to hurt the lineup and it’s chances because it’s not a priority over protecting young kids.
If Staal and Smith are in the lineup every night and Kravtsov is in Hartford so McKegg and Strome can play then it’s about treading water. -

James,
You are now seeing what it was I have been saying about Kravtsov. This is pre determined. He going to Hartford. It’s why McKegg was on the ice for 2 plus minutes at the end of the first Jersey game. No amount of Kravtsov playing well will change it. It’s the easy way out, and Quinn will take it. -

BDL, same with Lindgren vs Smith. I understand “playing big minutes in Hartford “, but only to an extent. When do you say a player is ready and will benefit from playing less minutes, in a perhaps smaller role, but against real competition? And participating in real NHL practices?
I wonder, though. Does Quinn feel some pressure to win more games this year, and does he worry about his job security? That would be bad if he does. -

Fast is one for sure, don’t know much about O’Regan.I like fast, I have a fast sweater and also a T-shirt, but he just seems like such a waste at this point with this roster. He stood out a few seasons ago because of his effort vs the “Ef it” of many of the other rangers, but last season and now that is far less of a case, hard pass on him.
-

BDL,
I get it. big minutes in Hartford make sense for Kravtsov and Lindgren who both look comfortable at the NHL level but Chytil who couldn’t buy himself a clue in his own zone last season was benefiting from NOT being in Hartford?
I call Shenanigans. To this point I haven’t put too much stock in the concerns you and others have but if this stuff really is “pre determined” then Quinn’s line about spots not being handed out is BS and it’s a slap in the face of fans who have to drop 200+ on a ticket to go sit nose bleed and see their team play. They either committed to this thing or they didn’t. Don’t say one thing and do another. I guess we’ll see if your concern is validated. Carp seems to think it is. Then again he thought Andersson was definitely making it last year as did the rest of us.

The New York Rangers announced today that the team has reduced its Training Camp roster by five players, as Connor Brickley, Sean Day, Tim Gettinger, Nick Jones, and Dawson Leedahl have all been assigned to Training Camp with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).

I think injured guys can’t be sent down while injured. But I think this only applies to guys who were in nhl previous year or years (not sure of games played though).
so it appears that there’s no problem in sending down Day but there might have been a problem with Beleskey (hence he never started camp) and not sure on Lettieri.
your thoughts?
-

You’re right, Alex. Only players on the NHL roster are subject to that rule. Beleskey would’ve been a problem if he were injured. That’s why they placed him on non-NHL roster at the beginning of this camp. Day was not NHL roster player. Lettieri is waiver exempt, but he can’t be sent down to Hartford until cleared to play. All this means that he would start the season as a non-roster injured player, his salary wouldn’t count against the cap, but he would be paid NHL salary until cleared to play.
-

You were all right when you said something was wrong with him. Let’s hope he’s ok:

If anyone is interested in an espn league this year sign up here.
This in no way is to deter from our annual Yahoo league. Some just prefer ESPN (like me)
Forwards
Panarin-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Kreider-Chytil-Kakko
Namestnikov-Andersson-Strome
Lemieux-(Howden or McKegg or Nieves)-Fast
(one of those three centers ends up in Hartford, and I’m guessing it’s Nieves).
Defensemen
Skjei-Trouba
Hajek-Fox
Staal-DeAngelo
Smith or Rykov or Lindgren (two of those in Hartford).
Goalies
Lundqvist
Georgiev
Briefly, he thinks that they may decide to keep all three young Russians in Hartford together to continue what hey started during this summer. That is Kravtsov, Shesterkin, and Rykov.
He thinks they may want to keep Haley in the organization if he is willing to play in Hartford. As I mentioned before, one-way contract should do unless he gets multiple offers to play in the big league from other teams.
The decision between Lindgren and Smith shouldn’t be based on their cap hit. It’s a washout. The decision should be based on what benefits Lindgren more.
He also thinks it’s McKegg over Nieves.
