The Rangers traded their 2nd round pick this year (37) and a conditional 3rd round pick next year (it becomes a second in 2020 if Fox plays 30 games) to Carolina for the rights to Adam Fox.
Adam Fox is a highly-touted 21 year old right shooting defenseman with good offensive and puck moving abilities. A 5′ 11″, 181 lb Fox was born in Jericho, NY and the Rangers were his favorite team growing up.
Fox was drafted by Calgary in the third round ( 66th pick ) in 2016, but was traded last year to Carolina, along with Dougie Hamilton and Michael Ferland, for Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm. Earlier this month he told Carolina that he would not be signing with them and will be returning to Harvard to complete his senior year prompting the trade. Carolina would lose him for nothing after next season, as per NCAA players related rule.
One can argue that Gorton could’ve just waited until after next season and sign him as an UFA. The price he gave up isn’t even close to what Carolina reportedly demanded ( a first round pick ), but it indicates that the Rangers want to speed up this process as much as possible. It also indicates that one of the R handers will be gone as soon as this June. Shattenkirk, DeAngelo or Pionk?
There is no doubt the Rangers will announce his signing to an EL deal very soon.

Nice roll Jeff Gorton is on right now.
Feels like an overpayment to me, but if he slots in straight away I presume we’ll be trading Pionk and get something back
Repost:
If he’s playing in October then it’ll probably won’t up being 2 second rounders. Same thing (+Alexi Saarela) we gave the same team to misuse Eric Staal who we also paid too much for at the time (especially with the way they intended to use him).
We were betting against ourselves for a guy who would’ve been free next year.
I like Fox and I hope he makes me eat my words but I think we paid too much at this particular moment in time.
Congrats BDL!
It’s not far from a 1st rd pick since we’re pretty early in each round. Plus we give up another pick (possibly another 2nd) for a guy who doesn’t seem to be good in his own zone. Is Sather still involved in things?

Canes GM Don Waddell and owner Tom Dundon had multiple conversations with Adam Fox trying to change his mind but obviously could not. Given that they only had 1 team to deal with trade-wise based on Fox’s desire to sign with the Rangers, I would say the ‘Canes got a decent return

Rangers did overpay. With all the picks they have accumulated, they could afford to do so. They get the kid a year earlier than they would have if they waited. I am all for it.
Still too much. 2 seconds is what we currently have for Zucc. Adam Fox has a long way to go to be worth as much as Zucc in my opinion.
One extra year for a player they envision as a long term piece of the puzzle. An extra year for a 21 year old to grow along with other young pieces. What do you accumulate the picks for? To invest in Apple stock? Let the overthinking begin.
Fox right handed shot, demanded trade of back to Harvard. NYR are sure he’ll sign. So sure, they’re renewing Times crosssword subscription for locker room.

Great – they acquire another offensive minded righty D-man, a USA college boy no less; wow, this is perfect for the stat heads. Two 2nd round picks if he plays this year, which he will. Overpay for more marshmallow soft D. I don’t think Sather is the one infatuated with Offensive Dmen.
.
Next year’s D Corps:
Shatty – Staal
Pionk – Shea
Fox – Smith
7D: D’Angelo
.
Your honor, the Defense rests…
Fox, Pionk, and TonyD are kind of redundant. One of Pionk, or TonyD is gone.
Let’s hope it’s Shatty gone

Hearing that Fox will also join Team USA for the World Championships. (Rangers assistant GM Chris Drury is the GM for USA).
Where the HELL is Beezle?! He’s not going to take this news well lol
I’m hoping that this kid has more defensive ability than Tony D or Pionk.
Too much coffee, Coos?😃
“Your honor, the Defense rests…”
….aaand will give up about 275 goals next season..
Definitely an overpay given he only wants to play for the Rangers, just giving up our 2nd rounder was too much let alone potentially both (remember we had the tampa second to trade at least).
If the goal is to improve the team’s defensive coverage, two of Pionk, Shatty and Tony D should be moved, not just one. We know Shatty is not likely going anywhere this offseason so have to get rid of Pionk and then Tony once Fox is NHL ready
At this point, I don’t think Shattenkirk is move able. I know my opinion on trading TonyD, or Pionk is going to be in the minority, but I would trade TonyD before I’d trade Pionk. I think they both probably have similar value. TonyD has a lot of baggage, and Pionk was pretty darn bad the last 50 games. In my opinion, the two of them at their best, Pionk is the more well rounded player, and that is why I would keep him.
HOSED.
Pete,
You pay the price if you want the player here this year. Carolina was under no obligation to trade him right now. Think about what the price would end up being if next year the Rangers are in the playoff hunt, and needed a Dman, and Fox to put them over the top. Guessing it would be substantially more than two second rounders.
Someone check on Coos. I think he hit the head against the keyboard.
Bye bye Pionk
Wish we would have traded VC for him or a 2020 2nd; 37th pick in the draft has legit value
You guys don’t like any of draftees anyhow. Who cares about 2nd rounders? 🙂
True that JamesG…..would have been small and soft anyway
There’s actually a bunch of D men slated* to go early in the 2nd this year.
Still need someone on the right side who can play defense. Any chance they make a play for Trouba?
I’m not against Trouba, but know he is going to cost a lot. Both in assets, and contract.
I think some of the biggest and best additions Gorton can make on D are subtractions. If he can somehow maneuver his way out of Staal/Smith/ Shattenkirk, that in it self would improve the D.
Agree BDL. Would solve a lot of problems though. DeAnger and Winnipeg’s 1st(Hayes)? Does that get it done?
BDL, by all accounts Fox told Carolina not only is he not signing with them, but the only team he would sign with is the Rangers. So yes they didn’t have to trade him now, but he was otherwise going back to school and then they lose him for nothing (or next to nothing next July 1.
Yes they could have traded him to another team, but what other teams you think were going to offer up a lot given his expressed desire to play for the Rangers?
And sorry hard to see any team at the deadline trading much of anything for an undersized offensive defenseman currently in college and ufa bound to put said team over the top. Talk about a hail mary
I think it is a pretty safe bet that, Hajek, and Fox are going to be on the team. I would expect Lindgren to make a strong push to make the team. I don’t think he will to start, but he will be there sooner, rather than later. Gorton needs to figure out a way to make room for these guys. And don’t forget, Miller will probably be joining them whebhis college season ends.
I think Smith will play a lot of 4th line again this year

Interesting that tickets on stubhub for tonight‘s Nuggets playoff game start at $27. Tickets for the Avs-Sharks game tomorrow start at $101
Shatty might get better if he had Trouba on this team and not Pionk or DeAngelo. He wouldn’t get faster, but he could get used differently. It would be more balanced. I just don’t think Shatty’s tradable right now. Even if we ate salary.
Pete,
You are not telling me anything I did not know. Everybody knew he wanted the Rangers. That’s not the point. The Rangers wanted him for this year, not next. you pay the price!
Smith on the 4th line at 4mill per? That’s just awful.
At half price i think there would be some takers for Smith, just not sure any of those teams aren’t on his no trade list. So gorton has to tell him the plan is for him to be in hartford unless he is open to being traded anywhere.
However, Smith really isn’t blocking anyone given he can be put in hartford and Shatty also really isn’t blocking anyone at the moment because they shouldn’t be starting Pionk, Fox and tony D on the right side. Three out of any of those four on the right side is horrendous, so as I said before two need to go eventually, with Pionk and Tony D being the odd men out.
Staal is the real blocking player as he can’t be waived or traded without his consent (good luck getting that) and thus far they haven’t shown a willingness to sit Staal in lieu of a younger player. If they are willing to do so then you make Staal the 7th man and rotate him with Hajek and Lindgren.
Could also move Brady of course and i’d do so in the right deal, but not simply because the rangers don’t want to sit staal regularly
Rangers negotiated against themselves though BDL. No other team was ever giving them up to two 2nd rounders, so unless Carolina was that stubborn eventually they would have had to play ball or get nothing in return. Tampa’s second and 4th would have been my take it or leave it and even that seems like a lot given all of the above points
They paid extra second rounder in 2020 to have him for an extra year. I can live with that. The situation was more complicated than now or next year. Carolina didn’t want to lose him for nothing, NY wanted him this year, Fox had no desire to play another year in Harvard. You compromise.
I’d be shocked if any part of the “Bag of S” gets traded before opening night.
I like how we know the NHL trade business while sitting behind our computer screens.
I believe they will buy out Staal.
What this also means is that they never considered going after Erik Karlsson
a buyout of Smith is pretty awful too BDL
I would gladly trade Staal, Smith, Shatty or Henrik for nothing in return but I’m trying to deal in reality
Going back a couple of years the only reason I was meh (rather than anti) on G’s buyout is I was tired of all the anti G posts. I would much rather have ridden the contract longer and not sign Shatty (who I never wanted)
@James: I was in Costo when the headline hit. Amazing how well Granny hears when you are cursing in Costco on a weekday afternoon!
Insane and totally out of the NY Giants playbook. Overpay, bid against yourself, etc. You would have thought we would have learned with VC (and lesser extent Hayes). Maybe if this kid was a shutdown defender with a touch of offensive upside. But its just the opposite and not what this team needed.
Now I know we are getting Hughes or Kakko. We’re getting that Aussie kid from Alice Springs. You’re not following closely if you didn’t know about him! Sure fire NHL ready talent!
Correction: I k now we are *not* getting Hughes or Kakko
BDL
Smith could be a swingman between f and d , and in that role possibly allow us to carry a smaller roster. Again if you know how to move him to save the entire cap hit, go for it.
Rumor has it, Rangers un-retiring #2 for Fox.
Fox’s numbers should be -2, see what I did there? Rangers never learn another sawed off offensive D man. One thing is definitely certain more deals will be coming. No way does Gorton let the puck drop with One Punch Tony, Pig oink, & Fox on the right side.
Eli – you forgot about Hometown Discount, Sharty!
I just don’t get the bidding against yourself. Let the kid wait a year or let Caroliana sweat it to the last moment and maybe give up one third rounder
SN
No I didn’t I thought my post is clear. No way are those 3 going to be starting on the right side, more deals coming.
I hate this overpay crap.
Please tell me why it’s so important to have Adam Fox here a year earlier?
Don’t defensemen take a while to develop?
2 second rounders?
I heard they’re playing Shesterkin behind Eli Manning for 3 years.
Eli – presume you mean Sharty is a lock in the lineup. If Sharks can play with Burns and Karlsson, NYR can play with Hometown Discount and the Sly Fox
