Welcome to the .500 club, boys.
The game? WOW! Yes, they took advantage of Montreal playing 4 games in 6 nights, and having wobbly legs in the third. But the way they did it was different. This team is engaged, relentless, and physical. As a team, not just some players. That includes your “perimeter only” folks. Zibanejad, Buchnevich, Staal, even Chytil are looking for, and winning physical battles. I think, or maybe I hope, they are starting to buy into Quinn’s way of playing. If this continues, they are going to be a pain in the neck to play against. Apparently, it’s as much personnel as it is mentality.
Montreal, by the way, was asking for trouble during period one. They were giving up pucks, and allowing odd man rushes galore. Price was Price though, and our boys couldn’t finish.
Andersson was fine last night, I thought. Tried to do too much initially, but settled in nicely.
Lastly, if I am a GM and thinking about hockey trade with NY ( hello, Dubas ) I am asking for Neil Pionk to be included in any type of package.

Nothing like standing in line outside the walkin tire place at 7am to get snows on. May need to rewatch the game and cheer for Pig oink 🐷 again!
Haven’t seen the game yet. Looking forward to it. I’m currently pulling an Eli with my wife. Birthday/ anniversary.
I like Pionk a lot. I have one small notice with him, and I know it’s a small sample, but he seems to be a different, much better player at home than on the road.

Really tough guys against the smallest team in the league.
Don’t have access yet ilb. I did see the highlights, and I noticed where Buchnevich scored from. It wasn’t at the top of the circle with a snap shot.
Montreal may have small players, but they don’t play small.
Staal was great and so was the 4th line. Could have had a few goals.
That’s a game I wish I could have been at.

Butch scored in front off of a Staal shot on goal. 2 rare occurrences.
NYR would be fools to trade Pionk. The kid is a diamond in the rough. However, I guess it would be typical for them to do then.
They sure do play hard. No quit in them. And now they sre getting results. If this continues…I wonder if expectations begin to take an upturn. It’s a long season…but hey you never know.
Barring them being in first place, it shouldn’t matter what their record is, the smart thing to do is sell their pending UFAs and others not in the long term plans at the deadline. Easier said from here of course, but they still need the kind of talent only the top of the draft can get you
I think the next game will be a test. Not so much whether its a w or l but how they play. Important not to get too confident or fall back to the ways of two weeks past

You wish the games could all look like that third period. What’s fun is seeing the reactions and the expressions from Quinn as he navigates these guys through his rookie year as a HC. Good stuff.
Like I said a couple of days ago- these guys are all buying in I think in a lot of cases individuals are just taking time to adjust to this style of hockey. Some will get it. Some won’t. and few of them will be here after the deadline.
Am I the only one who watches Staal open the occasional can of nasty and think to myself “what could have been?” without all the injuries and concussions?
Doodie, call them small if you want, but that’s a Habs team off to a pretty good start that maybe was a bit FATIGUED in the third. I’m just glad that Domi decided not to go with Pionk and that Staal didn’t try to drop the gloves because small or not Domi would have made red and blue pudding out of either of them..
The refereeing last night was embarrassing.

that’s Bettman math .500 where 25 or more teams are at .500 or better in most years. Thank the 3 point games and the way records are displayed where quite often 1 team gets the win the other doesn’t suffer the loss.
loved Mika’s goal where he didn’t do a fly by and kept himself in position to score.
Like Names on pk last night; he is one of their best skaters, also Kreider on some pk as well.
Playing those guys on the pk along with VC reinforces their need to continue to work on their Dzone game 5v5.

re: Coach Q…It’s funny how the NHL works sometimes. Bowman makes some bad decisions the last few season by re-acquiring Saad and Sharp, he trades Panarin and doesn’t find a dependable back-up goalie for his often injured number 1 guy. Seabrook and Keith start to fade as high profile Dmen with big contracts always seem to do..and let’s fire the coach who won 3 Cups in 10 years..
thought the same on Namestnikov, SN. He and Hayes are a pretty good combo on the kill.
Maybe if we add Chytil to the Pionk package, it’s enough of a sweetener to get Yandle back?
I’m curious what the actual points percentage is at the end of the season. Like, if you add up all of the bonus points and divide it by 31, then add that to the maximum possible total of 164 and divide by two. That’s the metric by which a team should be evaluated for points percentage.
Last season, .500 would have been 86.77 points.
When the season started I really was hoping for a top 3 pick. And yes I suppose that could still happen. But if Hank continues his stellar play and this cotton candy crew starts growing some extra large seeds game in game out we may end up seeing an accelerated rebuild. Having said that the UFA’s still need to be moved at the deadline along with a number of our vets.

DaveB – think you are right on Zuc being a gonner but not so sure on Hayes. He is good defensively and has managed to get his linemates some goals. If he can start putting in a few himself and continue to play more N/S than E/W they may try to keep him, at least before selling at deadline. He is a frustrating player no doubt.

We were slow off faceoffs, we weren’t aggressive on our assignments, and all I said was, ‘Don’t come in here and act like you care about it if you don’t put the effort in. You’ve got to earn victories in this league’ and I thought we did a pretty good job of that in the third period.”
Minx – the other possibility is that Hayes remains and they trade one of the young centers (Chytil?) in a package that gets a good wing. There are lots of permutations to work with and decision making time still quite a ways off

If you are going fu manchu, I applaud you, but please recognize the difference between a fu manchu and a horseshoe. The hair that goes down the side of your mouth and chin on a fu manchu all grows from the side of your mouth. In other words, your chin is shaved clean and the hair that covers your chin is just long side mouth hair. A horseshoe is when you grow hair on the sides of your chin to connect with your mustache.

Finally got around to watching the game. Buchnevich, in the last two games looks like he may be figuring it out. Much more engaged, and going to the dirty areas. He’s not going to score 30 goals hanging out at the top of the right circle. He needs to get his nose dirty, and to his credit he did the other night. For me, it’s not about winning every board battle. It’s about competing on every board battle. And if you lose the battle, go get the puck back. Don’t except the result. As far as the Buchnevich apologists go, the guys that feel he doesn’t respond to tough love, and should be allowed to just play his game, I call BS. It’s about the coach trying get the very best out of the player, and not accepting mediocrity.

Very excited to see Lias and Howden in same lineup. While they may not have elite 1C skill, these 2 are the future; 2-way pivots with offensive skills, not afraid of the wall; both very strong on their skates.
Lias was 7-2 on FOs the other night.

No doubt Quinn will have a really good idea of who he can bring in that can excel at his style of game. Judging from his comments about Lias in that interview yesterday, I’d say he already feels like some guys are square pegs hovering over a round hole.

2 things I assume on Duchene. 1- he can’t wait to leave Ottawa and 2- he wants to get paid.

James – Doosch will def be looking for hefty paycheck. Trade Haze for winger makes most sense.
Signing Hayes, and trading Zibanejad makes the most sense. Neither Zibanejad, or Chytil can play in the D zone. You can’t have the top two centers play that way. Hayes is already good in his own zone, and is getting better at it. Plus Hayes is the better player.

I still think howden and andersson are the top 2 centres. Not sure I want to pay hayes to play bottom 6, I’d rather them add a Bennett type and get rid of both Hayes and Zibanejad

@Wicky had to put the plow on, the rain forecast changed overnight.. 3-4, perhaps a bit more, totals go up quickly with each extra 100′ above me. At least now it feels like hockey weather
