The Rangers again got off the board with a high selection and take KHL rookie of the year Vitali Kravtsov. Discuss.

will say if Tavares stays Wahlstrom could get to play with the perfect center for his game in a couple years, which could mask some of his shortcomings
jpp
I like Florida’s pick too. Kid seems Alil Loki like. Stirrer of the pot, on a Russian kid who can skate and shoot, with Florida’s top end forwards. Like the pick
jpp
Whoever plays with Tavares scores 30. So if Wahlstrom with Tavares it’s only bc he can’t produce his own offense
CraigWeather
JPP,
Where’s the big upside w/ our 3rd pick? Because I’m not seeing it…..
jpp
Bc ideally, you want a top end scorer like Wahlstrom Is supposed to to drive his own line, allowing an elite center like Tavares to carry a lesser forward to a higher goal total.
Headzo
Well only 30 more years we have for a successful rebuild!
jpp
What else is he? I was watching the broadcast. He’s a 17 yo who played in the Swedish men’s league. He’s a puck moving RH d who might become a Sami vatanen type. How is that not upside. What else is he? A stay at home, bottom 6 D. Why would the rangers draft him there if they didnt think he had a good chance of fulfilling some of that

The Gordie – Gordon show does some of their best work in the 2nd Round…

I’m a bit dumbfounded. They always seem to do strange things at the draft. So I guess no surprise there. I just hope that Walstrom doesn’t kill us every time he plays against us.

SN, that’s sarcasm, right? Gorton has never had a 2nd rounder and the team as a whole hasn’t hit on a second rounder since 2008 (stepan).

This was tweeted by Kevin Hayes last night at 1:20 am. This guy. Haha, right back at you. Next time we’re in the playoffs, play that way big bad wolf.

Fans in Dallas were idiots for booing Bettman while they honored the Humboldt Broncos. There’s a time and a place and if they were already hammered, why bother going to the draft if you’re not going to be able to take it in?
Beezle
I am not unhappy with the first two picks. At #9 the guy is perhaps a few spots higher than concensus but not outrageously so. That other players had continued to drop down is not always a reason to take them. The second pick seems to have a lot of upside and the third as well. With the Russian and Swede, hope the NYR look at Buch’s less than ready core strength and work on that element immediately if necessary. Miller will definitely be a big kid when he’s done with college!
And clearly the NYR are on a mission to ink every Swede with as close to a name like Hank’s as possible. Poor Sam and hopefully not Joe: “A great save by Lundqvist Joe, now Lundkvist picks up the rebound..skates it up ice..finds the wide open Lindqvist who shoots.. he scores!!!!”

Corey Pronman,(the Athletic) has a breakdown of the best picks available on day 2.

This is going to go down as the what could have been draft. I think everybody here wanted the goal scorer Wahlstrom. At that spot, I did too. But I’m ok with Kravtsov. High skill level. Understandable pick. I loved the Miller pick. Tremendous upside. Where they lost me was on the third pick. Noel, McLeod, Groulx. One of those guys needed to be the pick. And maybe they get one of them in the second round. Then maybe I’ll look at it different.
CraigWeather
After sleeping on it, I’m still disgusted. Gordie Clark needs to be shown the door. How the hell do we pass on Wahlstrom or Dobson? The next Kuznetsov … lol. Yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it.
CraigWeather
Btw- they would’ve probably picked Kravtsov over Zadina!!!!! Let that one sink in!!!!
Pete
At least he projects to have elite offensive skills as opposed to being a defensively responsible center with limited offensive upside! Not that upset with the pick and hope he is in the ahl this year or next

If we don’t all boo Buttman, Tom, at every opportunity, how will he know that we hate him? He might get the wrong idea. 🙂

Wondering if we thought about trading down. I bet Kravtsov wouldn’t have made it past the Isles if Wahlstrom wasn’t available, and if a deal wasn’t to be had with Edmonton…we took the guy.
I think he’s a hell of a prospect. I had my heart set on two guys that went to the island, but this guy is a stud.
SN
The last pick was the doozy; when interviewed afterwards the Swede was shorter than Amanda Borges (no relation to Victor) who is 5’7″ (Amanda, not Victor) While she may have been wearing heels, they were not 4″ stilettos.

Is it safe to come out?

picking 8th today in R2 – #38 and lost the other one (#48) moving up 4 spots which only looked bad after Blues sent a R3 for a similar move 5 mins later.

Don’t know what else Ottowa was offered for that pick tho SN and clearly NY wanted to get ahead of Minn, not the end of the world.
SN
These guys have builds like Artie Party; hopefully they can ‘shoot’ better.

And we did trade up for pick 22, which is more valuable than pick 27. If have loved to keep both R2s but it is what it is. I like Miller even more and more, everything I read.
SN
Pete – we are awash in a sea of known unknowns; welcome to the Gordie Gorton Draft Show.
SN
Not one player taken in R1 weighs over 200 lbs; the fast and furious.
Pete
Eh, the Russian kid was a known quantity and not nearly the stretch that Anderson was. Miller was on a lot of people’s radar at the end of the first. May have a point on the Swede, definitely gonna have to wait on him awhile
Pete
Splitting hairs SN. Miller is listed at 198 as an 18 year old, he will easily put on 10-20lbs of muscle as college progresses

We will make a player trade today book it

Have to ask: Why was Wahlstrom still available? Thought he was to go by #6? Clearly NYR were not the only team who had second thoughts?
DaveB
In 2010, If we had taken Tarasenko or Kuznetsov instead of McIlrath…I feel like a huge chunk of fans would’ve blasted them for passing on Fowler, Gormley and Pysyk.

Lundkvist scouting evaluation: tiny; needs to work on his ‘suspect’ defense; touted for his offense but doesn’t score. Scouts have been known to be incorrect, but tired of promoting defensemen who have to learn to play defense. Hockey follows the rest of the world into head-shaking incongruity.
cooscoos
What’s the big deal with Miller? Many of his ilk available in later rounds. Isles made us look like fools.
Bobbyo
Sure Quinn had some insight on Wahlstrom being from Mass and US program….if they did move down pretty sure Flyers would have scooped up Kravtsov
Bobbyo
Big deal with Miller is unbelievable speed
St Pete Eli
Lundkvist pick is a mystery but then again every team needs a Hobbit on D right?
SN
Pete – suffice to say, the jury will be out for a while about these picks. Just excited to have young talent in the pipeline which has been a barren wasteland.

No one and nothing is ‘unbelievable.’ Tired of ‘unbelievable’ and ‘incredible.’

Good morning. Moral of the story is that they got a very good player. However they did not take the best player available to them. They never do. They do what THEY want. A bunch of pompous old men who claim to make these decisions via committee within the organization but really do whatever they want because they believe they are the front office elite.
Craig is right- they probably would have passed on Zadina or Tkachuk if they were there.
And my disappointment isn’t directed at all at Kravtsov. I won’t knock him because he’s even been written about as possibly being the steal of the draft before last night. I just don’t believe he was the best player available and when you pass on guys like Wahlstrom or Dobson you’re taking a bigger risk in what’s already a risky situation.
Ps- this wasn’t the draft that coulda been. This just gets added to the collection of drafts that could have been if he doesn’t pan out

And yes I wanted Wahlstrom but let’s not go crazy over what we were hearing last night. NBC guys have a tendency to kiss Lou Lams butt. There’s no mention of the kid the first hour and then Lou takes him and within 30 seconds he gets compared to Guerin, OV, and Bossy. Cmon now
