It was the worst of times and the best of times. That time would be from about 12:30 – 15:00 EST Saturday afternoon, at least for the NY Rangers who completed an improbable come from behind Bettman win over the Flyers at MSG.
The first period saw relatively even play, though the Flyers probably had the better quality play and were said to have missed only one or two shots out of the twelve they put on net. Yet, the Rangers would emerge with the lead, 1-0 on a very late goal by Panarin (12) at 19:24. Yes, the Rangers were the ones to score in the last two minutes! Zibanejad (15) was credited with an assist as was Nyquil as Panarin was clearly over the flu.
And then came the worst of times – the second period. Shesterkin went through another three and a half minutes of hell (didn’t that happen before fairly recently? 🤔). The Rangers gave up goals to Sanheim (3) on the PP, Tippet (10) and Zegras (15) on the PP at 06:42, 07:05 and 10:18. The feel good 1-0 lead at home – the Rangers were 13 W 2 L scoring first – evaporated and for the fans, was replaced with despair as they now trailed 3-1.
Now what? Put Panarin back out. At 12:23, Panarin (13) would score again, unassisted as the far post is not yet a member of the CBA. 3-2 Flyers and….the comeback was short lived as Abols (2) would put a shorty past Shesterkin at 14:36 to put the Flyers back up by two, 4-2. That was a wrap on the second period. Shesterkin was not looking like the $12 million (with rounding) man and neither were the Rangers, other than Panarin.
They must have put something in the between period food and drink because the Rangers came out a different team in the third. Though they were unable to convert on an early power play, at 09:13 Trocheck (6) did something he hadn’t done since the day before Thanksgiving – score a goal, this time on his backhand and putting in his own rebound. Miller (12) and Perreault (2) with the assists. 4-3 Flyers with a lot of time left.
With the Rangers still pressing, at 17:00 the Flyers made a mistake when Ristolainen put the puck over the glass and gave the Rangers a PP. Not quite 30 seconds later, Zibanejad (12) blasted a shot from his office on a nice feed by Morrow (2) and Cuylle (11). Game tied at 4-4 and headed to OT.
What would a Ranger game be without a mystery call by one of the refs? This time Wes sent Panarin to the box at just 00:08 into the OT for a phantom slashing. Somehow, a combo of Trocheck or Zibanejad paired with Gavirkov and Schneider killed the penalty, giving the Flyers few chances to shoot. The teams traded a pair of shots over the next two minutes before Morrow, who had a bad turnover late in the game, commited another turnover on a cross ice pass before deciding pulling down Zegras was his best option to prevent a breakaway. With 51 seconds left, the NYR once again trotted out 16, 4 and 44 and successfully killed of the rest of the clock. On to the shootout!
Panarin, having become a master at the shootout, scored easily to start the contest. Zegras followed but Shesterkin made the save. Next, Trochechk, hands of stone, looked like the Great One putting the Rangers up 2-0. The Flyers sent out Konecny who made a pretty lame attempt that Shesterkin stopped. The come from behind was complete, NYR win 5-4.
Injury Note: The Rangers were without captain JT Miller for the last 10:04 of the game after he took a hard, high hit in the netural zone from Seeler. Sullivan said he had no update after the game.
Game summary below:

Next, the Rangers travel to Nashville for a Sunday evening tilt at 19:00 EST 21 December against the Predators. Telecast by MSG and FDSNSO.

It is a far far better rest that I go to than I have ever known when I skip the games and just read the epic recaps
NICE write up Beezle I am impressed! The dilemma we are in is simple. As ORF said this team needs the core to score as they did yesterday. Drury has depleted the prospect pool, and if they are close or in he will deplete it even more. There isn’t enough high end skill for a bright future. Ugh!
Delaurier looks like a PED commercial
Does nhl test?
Hope he felt good unloading on a rookie way below his weight class.
The boarding from behind was dirty
At least Wes gave him the extra two
Imagine a line of Cuylle Labe Olivier.
Othmann asked I not bring up his rag dolling 🤣
Impressive Othman came up swinging but pretty sure he didn’t know who did it before doing so
Games like this are why Wes McCauley signs autographs after games
“…Hope he felt good unloading on a rookie way below his weight class…”
Perhaps said rookie should have processed all that info before challenging him to a fight?
@Beezle
Didn’t Panarin break the opponent’s stick for his overtime penalty? Those calls have become almost as automatic as shooting the puck over the glass.
Maybe. But after a few punches you’d think slowing down and understanding the opponent and maybe just submitting him would be more along the code
But seriously. Delaurier neck circumference looks like a wwf wrestler from the 90s. Vince mcmahon would be proud of his roid rage
These sticks break way too easily. Gotta have some sort of feel for the call vs no call and time of the game.
It was a hockey play
Also. Full disclosure. If you go back a few seasons on RR2 I actually wanted delaurier at the trade deadline
when Philly got him for peanuts I was dissapointed
Jbytes – I can only go by the replay I saw during the game many hours ago and from that it looked like the stick broke on its own from the player leaning on it. IIRC Bread was facing into the boards with the player coming behind him – he would need a very impressive back hand, though perhaps the stick was just ready to go. In any event, still don’t think that should have been called, from my angle of it.
Zero shits for Laffy 2nd game in a row …I am confident he can keep the streak going
Well.. guess no hiding from it Mothman, hoockeyfights.com has it as their featured “fight”
Is it just me or do these composite sticks seem to break real easy. I remember buying hockey sticks from Jerry Cosby’s and they lasted forever. Don’t get me started on the price. You have to be rich to afford them now.
Hope Miller injury is not too serious. His play lately has gotten better. Also just maybe Trocheck might be coming out of his slump.
I believe the overall outcome of the OT incident may be a boost to this fragile teams confidence. Let’s see how they handle the Preds. On to other matters. If they do begin to turn things around Drury must not sacrifice what’s left of the future, which isn’t much. They are not close to the chalice. I suggest the move to make is trading LaFart for a vet RW who can put the puck in the opponents net. There are still Canadian teams who would love to give him a fresh start. If they crumble under the pressure sell sell sell!

Seems that miller will be out a while
Another separated shoulder for one of our boys in blue. He can hang out with and recuperate with Fox. Two of our better offensive players out for an extended period of time. What can go wrong, will go wrong with this team. Oh well. On to Nashville and victory.
I’ve never used a composite stick. I’m too cheap and the money would be wasted on me. I’m told they have the same or longer life. Unlike other materials they fail catastrophically without warning and often in the shaft. Bread seem to only press his stick on top of the puck carrier’s stick. That was enough to break the stick and that call is automatic now.
Per GGMM:
Mollie Walker @MollieeWalkerr 21m
#NYR captain J.T. Miller is week to week with an upper-body injury.
Word is his candidacy for Olympics will not be affected by this injury.
He is also not going on LTIR.
Going on LTIR would make him eligible for return on 14 Jan against the Senators. I hope this is not just a case of hoping to rush him back (or him forcing the issue) for outdoor game at EV’s place
Multi-goal comebacks vs the flyers and Habs were nice this month, both vs playoff bound teams. How many times did the Rangers gave away leads to bottom dwellers back when they were still a playoff team?
GGMM on Othmann:
Brennan Othmann was a champ when we asked about the Nic Deslauriers fight.
“I always stick up for myself, and I’ll try not to back down from anybody. And you know, maybe should probably look to see who hit me next time. I didn’t, really, to be honest I didn’t see who hit me. I was just really fired up… It’s funny, I was telling some of the guys, as soon as he hit me with the first one, and then I saw the tatted knuckles pull away. I knew it was Deslauriers. You have respect for a lot of those guys, a lot of the heavyweights in the league… Next time, I’ll probably definitely take a look.”

Adam Edström’s status remains unchanged, per Mike Sullivan. He is still not skating yet.
