Rangers 2, Blues 1 (OT)

Published by

The Rangers had no bread last night so instead made pudding, a little soft and squishy but ultimately a winner for dessert. OK, you would be forgiven if you snoozed through most of this game of two teams stuggling through problems to find their identities. It was a rare night in some respects – the NYR were under 50% at the dot and they had 25 SOG by the end of the second period (but only 5 in the third).

As is typical for the Rangers, they gave up a goal at the end of a period – in this case at 18:58 of the first to Berggren (3) who was just picked up from Detroit. 1-0 STL after one.

Enter Gabe Perreault’s skate – at 06:02, still rookie Perreault (1) put himself in a little battle in front of the St. Louis net and was awarded his first NHL goal when Cuylle’s shot from the circle deflected off his skate and in the net behind Binnington. Not one of those “I’ll never forget my first goal” type moments but monkey off his back none the less. The goal came just as a Ranger PP was expiring but would also be the last regulation time goal. In addition to Cuylle (10), Laba (6) would get a secondary assist.

The Rangers did the turtle thing in the third, getting outshot 11-5 in the period but managed to hang on to get the first point before moving on to the OT frame. The first two minutes of OT saw one shot on goal by the Blues before JT Miller (10) would blast the game winner home from the high slot at 02:21, Trocheck (11) and Gavrikov (8) with the assists. 2-1 NYR the final.

Game summary below:

The Rangers return home to MSG for a Saturday afternoon tilt at 12:30 EST on 20 December against the Philadelphia Flyers. Telecast by MSG and NBCSP.

Sheary belongs no higher than fourth line. I really don’t know if he would even get a shot on another team.

Last nights game was one of the most difficult to watch in years. There is not a whole lot of anything to get excited about with this team. I wish they would have put Labba and Perault out in OT but I guess that his a pipedream that will never happen.
At least I have stuff to do Saturday so I have no reason to watch them bore the crap out of their fans VS the Flyers.
Remember when Flyer’s games use to be fun to watch. Oh Well.

Honestly. Laffy has been bad. But, the past few games even though the stats aren’t there, the eye test seems like he may be close to righting the ship

    Skating with more purpose

His hand/eye and vision with quick passes in minimal space is something that stands out. He just needs to raise his motor/rpms and get a little dirtier closer to the blue paint

    From the Post:

MSG Network, Monday, [gave Chris Kreider’s return to the Garden] the Jimmy Dolan-pretend-they-never-existed Marv Albert and Jeremy Lin treatment. When a scoreboard tribute to Kreider’s 13-year, 339 goals career played, the network went to commercials.

Or was it that MSG Network had no idea that this salute, using MSG Network video, was coming?

Until Dolan, the Garden was a great place for ticket buyers and employees. Now, it’s more gulag than garden. Can’t even talk to an on-air regular without permission and a detailed explanation as to “What about?”

Corporal I saw a brief period of physicality but it mostly seemed to come from the Blues. Think it was the second period. Could have gone comatose for a bit after.

When I see LaCoast consistently skate the puck within oh.. 6 feet of the net or plant his butt at the crease, I’ll say he’s improving. Haven’t really seen more than a one or two off of those yet.

Beezle. But the 3rd period I believe they had the hit count on tv graphic heavily favoring the rangers.(like 15 to 6) Not that hit stats are ever truly accurate or reflective.

I saw Schneider cuylle Laba Carrick Rempe sherry othman borgan soucy Robertson miller Mika and Trocheck and even Perrault using their bodies and playing physical

At one point we were up in shots like 22 to 8 so it’s not like the hits were because we were chasing possession.

    That’s clearly ice tilting

CClegg- at one point in the game thread EV noted the shot disparity and predicted (correctly) that it would vanish by end of the game, 31-27 NYR Or as another (?) poster put it – if you are hitting then you don’t have the puck

    1
  42. corporal clegg Avatar
    corporal clegg

Yes Beeze. The third was a different story than the first two.

My point on the hits was the disparity was at the time when we did have the pick and shots and were controlling the game taking it away from them and winning some puck battles

It was a tale of two games a bit

  43. corporal clegg Avatar
    corporal clegg

Definitely an oversimplification with hitting and puck posession

Cause possession changes so frequently even teams with the posession advantage can dominate further by throwing checks to thwart the enemy.

Hence, blues had like 9 shots after two periods which is crazy

The Rangers inquired, given their proximity to Hughes’ brothers’ team. Winger Alexis Lafreniere has been a target for the Canucks for some time — unsurprising, given his former agent, Émilie Castonguay, is their assistant general manager. But he wasn’t the only player Vancouver coveted: The Canucks also were interested in forwards Gabe Perreault, Will Cuylle and Noah Laba, as well as defenseman Braden Schneider. Ultimately, the Rangers did not want to part with the requisite players to acquire Hughes.

Why would Drury want Hughes unless he has a way to move Fox? They are redundant and expensive. He needs forwards and physical Ds. Maybe he just felt he had to do due diligence, but the articles say he made an offer. Laf, Schneider and a first or two. How would that make them better? He can’t make a 3 or 4 for1 trade. The organization doesn’t have the depth.

  52. Beezle Avatar

Morgage even more of the future on a undersized defenseman just like the one you have. Is he playing with Fox too? What happens to Gavrikov? Add in Igor and you’re pretty much at the 50% of the cap for the back end – without even considering an extension for Hughes.

And what good is Hughes to this team? They can’t even shoot the puck into nearly open nets. Somehow a magical puck mover is going to make their shots better? And go in? How was that working with Fox on the PP this season?

That Dreary even considered this trade (as reported even earlier by Carey) just shows how inept and out of touch he is. He knows he’s going down and this was his last gasp attempt to buy more time and maybe get into playoffs this year. Meanwhile the future cupboard is even more barren than it is today.

He didn’t just inquiry. He made an offer of LAF(OK), Schneider(?) Laba (NO)! and a first (NO!). Throw in Perrault and they have zero young talent left to rebuild with. Hughes isn’t Bobby Orr. You can’t build a franchise around him. That’s a Sather bright shiny object trade. Thank god the Wild offered better pieces. (Buium and Rossi)

The insiders said Vancouver wanted an LD in the trade. The Rangers didn’t have one of those to offer. Vancouver has long coveted Schneider. I think it would have looked something like this, Laba, Schneider, Othmann (Ohgren),and a first.

Rossi wasn’t the key piece on the trade, Bieum was. Rossi will help them right now, but by the time Vancouver is ready to compete, they will looking to replace Rossi. Just like the Wild did. If you told Vancouver, you can have Laba, or Rossi, they’d choose Laba. Most teams would.

Rossi just turned 24 in September, Laba 22 the month prior. Rossi is going to be entering that peak 25-30 yr old range.

Agree that Buium may have been the biggest desire for Canucks (just 20yrs) but if Rossi is spent by the time the Canucks can compete that will be a pretty sad state of affairs, almost Ranger like 😢

  80. Carey Wilson Avatar

Rossi is tiny. We have all watched the playoffs, and have seen guys like Rossi struggle to find space. Like I said, he will help them right now, but Vancouver will want someone bigger, and stronger when the time comes to compete.
