NY Rangers (20-20-2) vs Colorado Avalanche (26-17-1)
• 14 Jan 2025 21:00 EST
• Ball Arena, Denver CO
• TV: MSG, SNE (JIP), SNO (JIP), SN360, SN1 (JIP), ALT, KTVD, SCRIPPS •
Before you ask… all those odd networks are related to SportsNet. Probably need to be a Canadian and have a car with square tires to understand it all, eh?
So the Rangers are back at it again tonight, their record at a very exact 0.500. That will not be good enough to make the playoffs. As it looks at this moment, 88 points is the mark and that would require the Rangers to play 0.560 here on out. They may get lucky in that enough teams beat each other up to keep the hurdle below the more traditional 96 points, but hard to imagine any lower than 88.
Colorado is currently 7th in the Western conference by P% at 0.602 and are 7-2-1 in their last 10, though coming off a loss to the Jets. This will be another challege for the Rangers (4-5-1 last 10) and perhaps equally important to a win is how they play this game. A loss, but playing as they have the last three or four games, would not be tragic. A loss playing like they did in November or December (or against the Caps or Stars more recently) would be tragic and call into question the sustainability of their recent better play.
Line-up wise: Shesterkin is in goal tonight for the NYR. Kreider and Chytil are expected to return from their UBIs and play on the third line with recent waiver pickup Kaliyev. Groulx got a Greyhound ticket for Hartford this afternoon. As a result, Vesey and Brodzinski will be Prucha’d and Rempe will continue as RW on the fourth line. Should Chytil not be able to go, Brodzinski will center the 3rd line. Early reports have Blackwood in net for the Avs (2.51 GAA, 0.920 SV%). Wedgewood has been OK but is the backup after missing some games with an ankle injury. The Colorado specialty units are middle of the pack and they are about the bottom in FO%.
Your fine NHL officials tonight are … still a mystery as of 16:36 EST.
Keys to a Ranger victory today: Don’t play pond hockey with the Avs. Just don’t.
On this date in history: In 1936, Lester Patrick coached the Rangers to their 200th win, the first coach in NHL history to reach the mark (the Rangers were the fifth team in NHL history to record 200 wins).

Scary first 30 seconds? Must be watching a Ranger game.
Fox already making horrible giveaway passes

Someone said Miller looks like a defenseman since the Borg assimilated him… seems the process is far from complete.
Please trade Miller. Like yesterday. The guy is AWFUL.
McKinnon is one fast mutha
Too bad Edstrom has a crap shot or he’d be a much better player overall.
Lindgren missing the net by miles in replacement of Trouba.
E3 I have Lie Groups for Pedestrians on my winter reading list. Requires accompaniment by gummies at a minimum
Lotta nice giveaways start the game
We’re getting goalied tonight
And it begins
No defense. Cool. Good to see we suck again. Wouldn’t want to generate false hope.
He better not miss that shot when he’s making 12 million.
Kinda sad that the 4th line has the most offensive zone time practically every game
Three great scoring chances for the Rangers – Stoned
Three great scoring chances for them – One goal
Conner McDavid days since Shesterkin’s last shutout
Joe just caught Chytil with his replay
What a wasted shot there by Trocheck
I think McKinnon could lap Fox easily
Fox pinched ill-advisedly. Won’t get benched like Jones.
The Rangers have been quick and decisive with the puck with Kreider out. Kreider is still bobbling the puck trying to figure out what to do with it.
it’s like watching jv vs varsity
This iis the good period
Have the Rangers had a shot since the Cheadle non-score?
Wow. We took the first penalty? That never happens.
Beez – Sophus Lie was a giant. Best thing Norway ever produced.
TWO GOALS IN A ROW FOR Jim Carreyk
That was impressive. He downshifted!
Ride that hot streak
SAM the MAN
say my name!
Sam Reinhart!…. I mean Carrick!
Its funny.. our 1,2 and 4C all get PK time but never our 3C.
This made up Cheadle line spends more time in their own zone than they spend on the bench.
Beez – topology is a beautiful area. Artistry at its finest.
Avs took a Ranger penalty.
transformations, indications, on vacation, change the station ….gummys are yummys
boyeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Eh wwho let Mika back on pp1
vintage power play
Power Play looked good to start. Back to normal now.
Colorado players are hooking the Rangers like it’s not a real penalty.
Is that a 12m goalie in the Avs net?
That was a great setup. Just couldn’t finish. Because their goalie makes more than ours. Oh, wait…
Tro is clueless on PP
E3 I’m not good enough to really appreciate the higher maths in that way without significant pharmalogical assistance, and only then for the briefest time. I’m just happy to be able to use any of it in physics related material.
THEY KEEP GOING FOR THE FIVE HOLE AND THEY KEEP GETTING FRIGGIN STONED.
Maybe stop doing that?
Beezle –
It’s funny how Micheletti gives a dumbed down generalized analysis on the goal given up (Because he doesn’t want to call out Kreider) and you use it to put the blame on Chytil.
NYR should have 3 or 4 markers
Hope that wasn’t their good one, or you can pencil in a loss.
Hockey – he had three guys circle up high. Chytil was the one furthest and out of the zone unless I read the numbers wrong.
Kreider should have realized his center was out at the redline with the puck below their goal line.
Why am I jealous of every 4-7m goalie now?
E3 inhaling more California smoke than usual
Crazy period, entertaining for fans, widow maker for coaches
Refs will have to see a felonious assault before Avs get called on all their hooking and slashing
Victor Borge shuts down Big Mac 1on1
Beez – in the grand scheme, all but a few, no very little about high level mathematics. It’s become extremely specialized. Very few are able to connect the various fields with any effect. And believe me, sativa opens many doors. (As do shrooms)
wwpd I pretty much view goalies like running backs. Not worth sinking a ton of dough or time on their contracts, there are too many that are good enough to win it all with and most will have one or two exceptional seasons, hopefully you catch them at that time too.
The game sounds interesting. Maybe I’ll be able to watch them again some day.
Physics has become the same way E3, the specialties are specialized now lol. Malawi gold may make an appearance next summer to help with the studies
decent recovery Kreider rusty but looks to be moving better
Kakko got another goal today, as well as a 10 minute misconduct for abuse of officials. He’s getting feisty.
Beez – nice to see the interest in string theory fade to black. I likened it to two rolled up carpets unconnected in space with the ants on one carpet unable to chill with the ants on the other carpet. That’s my level of physics appreciation 😉
Gravy – check your mail
EV he got a roughing penalty the game before too
So far, so far…
E3 never was a fan of string theory… started from S-Matrix stuff in late 60s early 70s but they just wouldn’t let it go. Became an employment opportunity.
If we lose this one, we’ll be at least six points back of the last wildcard slot. Even when we’re winning, we’re losing ground.
Sounds like it’ll be the worst second period team against the best second period team next. Stay tuned.
Black wood made 4 top tier saves. Igor?
The last time a Rangers opponent took the first penalty in a game was the first game against Dallas on December 20th. In the shutout by the devils, the first penalties were from a fight, but the Rangers took the first penalty leading to a penalty kill after.
Lafrenière is a grade A moron. 3 on 1 if he paid any attention, Instead takes a weak shot from far. Smfh
WTF another 3pt game
Final/ SO
PHI 2
CBJ 3
Beez – too many dimensions. Usually the math is ahead of applications but not in that case.
exciting game. Aves are faster than light
Got away with a high stick, so that makes up for one of the 6000 hooks that Colorado has gotten away with.
Bettman points are the worst thing ever for the NHL
And the 2024-25 Rangers
Another one in New Jersey. Panthers and devils in OT
If only Lindy and Fox and a few others had that kind of speed
Kakko wasn’t consistent here, whether it was him or the team, and who knows if he’d have the same results if he stayed. At the moment, it’s a trade that’s worked out for both teams. Borgen has helped settle down the D and 1/3 the price of Trouba.
Thank god he lost the puck because the rangers just escorted an Av to the front of the net.
We’ll see at the deadline how “good” that trade really was.
That’s a LGR chant there
our sexy boys are battling
Panthers going to a shootout
I hesitate to say this but… Rempe has not looked bad out there.
Long way to go, and may make more sense to slip him, but could do worse for a 2-3RD if they can sign him in the 3.5M range.
*flip
(not Chytil)
woot woot
sweet Jesus
It’s a 4th line fire sale!!!
our new first line
4th line Fuggers!
Good 2.22222 yards of edstrom
victor Borge is our #1 D man
starting to love this 4th line
San the Man with a nice dish to the Big Swede who is showing some silky mitts
Igor, Igor, Igor
Well that was a good save.
as long as we continue playing defensive structure, I will be fine with the outcome of this game. I don’t expect them to have the conditioning to pull off a win given that we are only halfway through, but I’m very pleased with what I’m seeing
evas doog a saw taht lleW lol
wtf? How did the Bread line not score there??
Clearly stick infractions are free tonight
Colton has a point
This game is nutz
Carrick giveth, and Carrick taketh away.
make up call? Haven’t seen the replay yet
Sometimes, yyou just have to cross check a guy
miller loses his guy and then desperately deflects shot, Joe says great play…
it must have happened out of camera near the boards?
great pk
Panarin can’t even make a pass in the neutral zone on a delayed penalty. Smh
black’s wood impressive tonight
36 combined SOG, 35 grade A chances
That was the 4th second period since the beginning of December, that the Rangers won. It’s also the first game since December 12th in Dallas, that they shutout the opponent in the second period. However, they didn’t score in that one.
The last second period that we’ve won while also shutting out the opponent is, I don’t know when but it’s before December.
3rd period in the thin air, quick shifts!
Rat not playing w Mac
keep playing the 4th line!
That was a statement period.
Can’t sit back in the third line they did against Vegas. They won’t win if they do that again. Colorado is better in the third period than Vegas.
*like
5,280 ft is Sherpa territory
Something something good 20 minutes.
E3 I’ve been at the summit of Copper mtn… 12.4K wanted an oxygen tank lol
Panarin’s passing is really off tonight.
Arthur K is not pretty
kinda looks like a parrotfish
I’m not so sure that Trocheck knows where the net is.
The new Cheadle line has been hemmed in their own zone for most of their time on the ice tonight
Beez – sister in law is in winter park CO. Went hiking -,hit 13K ft. It was take a step stop. Take a step stop. Etc etc
Nice job by Rempe in the defensive corner.
Did Trocheck leave his contact lenses at home?
I’m happy for vally, he’s been dressing less like a piñata recently
Anybody else seen a third period like this recently?
It’s the zero offense show
Repeat of Vegas 3rd period turtle. Hopefully same result but spending at least some time in the other end would be a good thing, just don’t pinch
You tend to take penalties when the other team has the puck, mostly in your zone, for 90% of the time and keeps skating around you.
Every Ranger penalty taken tonight has been taken by a penalty killer.
Three guys intentially skate away from Colton so he can drive the net 🤷♂️
Laffy actually showed a little hustle there. Unfortunately coming back his shot was more likely to hit a spectator than the net
Some good looks, lousy shots.
They don’t call him “rebound control Igor” for nothing
They don’t?
75 chances to get it out of the zone. Zero times executed.
The $11.5 million man can’t give up that rebound.
sigh
Play no offense…. Get scored on. Who would’ve thunk it?
Don’t know how they’re gonna score. If Lavi don’t wanna play the fourth line it’s the only line that scored any goals.
I got them old Turtle Blues again.
Lindgren didn’t pick up his man on that last goal
A point is nice. But they need two. Maybe next time they’ll play like it.
How did we get here Joe?
just out the 4th line out there
They are going to skate circles around us in OT.
They finally played for the point.
Let’s see if they let a point slip away.
They played for the point.
Told you they couldn’t do what they did against Vegas and get away with it against Colorado.
solid effort all night …way to bail on them guys
Miko > Mika
Carrick and Edstrom should start the OT.
I didn’t realize how clear Igor saw that puck that he dropped at the end. Yuck.
is Kreids back on PP1?
” Miller to the bench” – I love that term
They picked another guy trying to come back.
Your Mika moment of the game
Zika is the worst. Don’t use him in the shootout. There’s no way he puts it in.
Just shoot it on Igor, puck will go in eventually
Because of course.
They are so f@#$ing a stupid. So is Laviolette
Cheadle with Lafrenière? Wtf were you thinking?
Great game. Losers OT and back half of the third.
When we didn’t score on the 4:3 it was inevitable Avs would win.
Laffy falls down, loses the puck and they never got it back.
As nice as their “streak” sounds, it doesn’t specify that the two games they lost in OT they gave away.
plenty of chances to score 3rd goal
They had chances and couldn’t finish. They let one slip away.
Two shots Shesterkin couldn’t control too. The tying goal, he had a clear line of sight and the winner…. C’mon.
Focusing on defense at the exclusion of offense is a mistake. Learn how to play a responsible offense and kill some clock while not giving up break aways.
Igor may have the record goalie salary for a while. No other team will spend that much on a goalie. Drury was bidding against himself.
Also got outgoalied again.
I have zero clue wtf Laviolette was thinking, putting Kreider in for the pp in such a crucial point of the game, after coming back from IR. Zika should have been in, because he has been getting points and looking better. Laviolette dropped the ball as well.
Bottom line the Aves stole one. – We had to convert the opportunities we had and we didn’t. But we played a great game And the 2 newly acquired defensemen are doing a great job
Olga was it me or was Laffy on his ass a lot this game?
I hope he knows he can’t give up goals like that ever again starting next season.
They are playing much better team hockey.
Another point w Rempe in lineup
BS Hook all on Smith and phantom cross check on Sam the Man, refs wanted Avs
Well, the positive is they at least got a point against a better team, something they wouldn’t have done in Nov/Dec
Valley being kind with the “bottom six” reference. Really its the bottom three.
They are now further back from the wild card than they were when the day started. They absolutely have to beat Columbus this week if they want to hold on to a chance.
They did out goalie us. Their’s kept them in the game. Not Shesterken’s.best
Why can’t this team ever get the puck out of their zone on 6 on 5??? Maybe they should practice that.
Fox doing the snow angel and Lindgren covering nobody on tying goal. Zbad with yet another turnover on winning goal, not to mention failing on breakaway and PP.
None of the “stars” can find a way to put the game away when they had chances. Laf and Panarin gave the puck away all night and refuse to hustle or sacrifice their body to make a play.
It says a lot when your best line is the 4th line and your $11.5 goalie can’t make the saves when you really need them.
On a positive note, less chance for Drury to try and add at the deadline.
Shesterkin was solid. But, solid isn’t normal Shesterkin.
Any team that goes on a run will get that last wild card. I really don’t think 88 pts is going to take it. A 7-3 run puts them where the Canadiens are now – 0.535
After Utah, they have 4 straight games against teams above then in the chase for the wild card spot. I think we’ll know what kind of team they are after those.
NYR 63% on FO. Clearly we lost the important ones?
Vaakanainen 11:26 TOI, two minutes less than Schneider’s ES TOI. And way less than the other two pairs
Rempe only 6:50 TOI, Edstrom 10:04. Lavi has to get over his fear of playing Rempe – there were no major gaffes.
Laviolette is a lost cause
Why is it so hard for the NHL to provide time in zone stats? Can’t even get it for the team let alone individual players. Bettman is the worst and deserves to become the next NFL commissioner 🤣
It would be nice if someone making above the league minimum scored a goal. If the high priced guys start contributing they could go on a run.
Carrick scores on breakaways. Mika cannot.
I thought Laf and Panarin were awful tonight. They were both turnover machines and neither made the necessary effort to get to 50-50 pucks on the boards. Neither has any interest in taking a hit to make a play.
How many picks do the Rangers have to include to trade Igor before his NMC kicks in.
.500 hockey, bubble team reality
Nice effort and playing good hockey lately but the core still needs to change.
They lost the goalie contest. Toews didn’t get all of the GWG and Igor let it slide under him. Blackwood made the saves he had to in OT.
2ways to look at this result and latest stretch
1 – team is coming together playing smart D focused hockey and ready to make a run with their elite goalie and underperforming top lines upping their play.
2 – team is coming together playing smart D focused used hockey and increasing trade value to rejigger roster to one that is a true Cup contender.
I hope #2
chytil is a big part of the core for those who want changes in the core
They looked much better without Kreider and Chytil.
Both He-tell and Cry-Der looked rusty but 20 did have 3 golden set ups which were not converted.
The goal against was adysmal with the NYR center out by the redline w the puck in the corner of the Dzone and the opposing center scoring w nobody near him
*NEW POST*
