The one thing I’ll say about this game is that when this team has defensive lapses it gets ugly in a hurry. They’ve put four new players into the lineup in the last ten days and have had some emotional games. I can understand laying an egg once in this one. Better get it together for the Pens though.

Bobby, I wouldn’t worry too much about Braun. At 35 years old I didn’t expect him to move like Makar out there but he makes up for it by knowing where he needs to be in his zone. We’ll be thankful for him in the post season. Not sure Schneider is the guy I want to see out of the lineup..

New guys looked good; ready to give Copp Stromeo’s deal, Motte has a great motor and Braun is very steady and makes great outlets.

Tried to trade chances with Derbils who will play that way every and any game. Needed to play the body more.

They missed Johnny B and Kegger….

Talk about getting away from what got you there in the first place, 2-0 up and start playing ridiculous passes, not taking the body and generally sitting back or not covering your man – then before you know it its too late to get back to the game plan. Lets hope they bounce back on Friday vs the Ice chickens

Chytil and Miller are the weak links now. If and when they address their spots in the lineup will determine how far they go.

Isn’t it ironic that they paly two games against two of the best teams in the NHL and win;then play like this while removing the boys they were dancing with all year. I know they will be better with these moves but what a disgusting performance last night. There are so many problems with last night’s game that going over them would be way too depressing. For us fans burn the tape from yesterday and hope for a better effort Friday night.
Of the player we brought in at the deadline I think Copp will be the best. Hope they can resign him after the season. Onto Friday and some fun with Cindy.

Copp and Motte looked good. Think given the cap hits it will be a straight choice between Stromeo and Copper, and the latter may prove to be a shrewd investment if he’ll accept the terms that Strome won’t

  9. James G Avatar
    James G

It took one game of Copp in the lineup to show how badly this team needed someone with his versatility. Just a physical N-S guy that can play wing and step in at center. They should have 3 of him in this lineup.

  10. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

    So it wasn’t Schneider’s fault?

  11. James G Avatar
    James G

On the Strome vs Copp issue- Both of them are probably going to get the same contract that Danault got last summer. Just a question of which is getting it from the Rangers.

Strome has started putting the puck in the net again and will finish with 3 straight years of roughly 20-35-55. Pick him apart all you want but that’s production that needs to be made up for regardless of whether it’s been streaky or a biproduct of Panarin etc..

  12. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Braun looked slow. Not unexpected, he is 35. Liked the way Motte plays. And what James said about Copp.

  13. James G Avatar
    James G

It’s been said a few times- The kick in the pants is that they can’t keep both but they’ll have a hole in the roster without having both or one and a replacement of equal or greater capability. They’re stuck. Thank Jeff Gorton for that.

  14. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

You let Georgiev go. Trade Chytil, and Nemeth, and if you have to Lindgren, and you keep Strome and Copp.

  15. James G Avatar
    James G

Braun can play physical smart defense. That’s what he was acquired for and that’s what you need more than anything in the post season. We could probably make a pretty decent sized list of guys like him that have helped their teams get to the SCF the last few years.

  16. James G Avatar

What’s the trade market for Kreider going to be like this summer if he finishes with 50 goals and helps them get into the 2nd or 3rd round? Just wondering…

  17. James G Avatar
    James G

    The “hypothetical trade market”…

  18. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Chytil is not the answer to any of the questions. His days in the lineup end the moment Kakko and Rooney come back. Because Chytil is not an answer, you need two centers.

  19. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Been trading Kreider since the day he was drafted. Rangers need a number 6 D man. It’s going to cost you Kreider. Carp tried to trade him in every one of his articles two seasons ago. Someday it will happen.

  20. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

    James,
It has already been decided that Kreider will never do this again. So his trade market would reflect that. Maybe a second rounder?😁

  21. James G Avatar
    James G

LOL yeah well we know the can of worms that it will open up…I only bring it up because it’s a fair topic to debate in terms of cap space and strength at his position. Does not mean I want him traded, do not like him, have any issue whatsoever. Just looking at the contract situation overall for any and all players.

  22. cregg7 Avatar
    cregg7

    Braun should play for Nemeth

After he gets used to the team on his natural right side he can switch to the left and then get Schneider back in there.

  23. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

I really don’t know what I think of Nemeth. Sometimes I watch him and see a smart veteran D man. Other times he just a mess. He hasn’t been dealt a good hand this year. First Nils, then Schneider, two rookies, and now a brand new partner. Maybe he’s the problem, maybe not. Hard to say.

  24. Admiral Akbar Avatar

    Panarin’s play is concerning.

The post-Covid Sx makes a lot of sense.

  25. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

Bobbyo – re your comment late last night. Just because a guy has put some points up doesn’t mean he is playing really well or at the same high level of a season before.

A number of people have picked up on it the past few months – Panarin just seems ‘off’ – slight hesitations on decision making, more errant passes, general energy level. Maybe it is just law of averages, maybe not.

So thankful he is still getting on the sheet but still concerned.

  26. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

Was not really impressed by Braun last night but of course, just his first game and new partner/structure (well, sometimes). Hope GG does a rotation with Schneider these last games.

Do think people make too much about rookies and the playoffs. If the player has shown competence during tight regular season games there is no reason to think they will suddenly crumble.

  27. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

BDL I think they will be moving on from Reaves as well, could save about $1M on the cap.

They may look to move Nemeth too, though not sure they could save much if replaced with another experienced 3rd pair guy.

  28. bobbyo2019 Avatar
    bobbyo2019

Beezle I guess we have different definition of playing well. He’s paid to put up points and he’s doing that with the team in comfortable playoff position. He is basically the only forward who can consistently create offense 5 on 5

  29. James G Avatar
    James G

BDL add to that a brush with covid protcol and whatever personal issues he’s had away from the rink. He’s good enough that Sakic brought him back last season for their post season run after having traded him for cap space prior.

  30. bobbyo2019 Avatar

only one game for Braun but Derbils have some speed up front…we will see if any similar problems with Pens. initial take is Schneider appears more mobile which will be needed and its not like he’s shy physically

    6-1 last March 4th
    6-3 last March 6th

The divisional teams we’ve beaten by 3 goals this season?
    4-0 against Columbus

    4-1 against the Flyers

    “good” teams this season?
    5-2 against Florida
    4-0 against Tampa

The figures are out there and have been. It’s been talked about repeatedly here and by some beats recently…(I think Vince m mentioned it yesterday somewhere)…these numbers include georgiev’s low cost replacement already

At this point roughly $13.3 mil in cap space with 9 forwards, 5 D, and 2 goalers.

You are missing 2 top 9 centres and a top 9 winger and a 4th liner (or 13th forward if you consider hunt a top 12) a top 6 D and a 7. You have 13.3 mil to do it.

If nemeth and Chytil are back, that’s 2.5 and 2.3 respectively so you have 8.5 left and you haven’t addressed strome position or kakko or extra D or last forward

  41. SN Avatar

He somehow escapes criticism because…points but Fox has looked like crapola on a stick in the Dzone since the ASG break.

  42. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

The point is the $$$$ are a problem and there are roster holes.

At some point, there is going to be a player a lot of people like that is going to be a cap casualty…probably Lindgren or kakko sooner and Kreider later. Strome may or may not be back this off-season and has been pointed out numerous times by numerous people here, it’s not the name it’s the points output that needs to be replaced at a similar or lower cap hit than $6 mil per.

Obviously the lower it is, the more help it gives in $$$ for the 3rd line centre void.

  43. Wicky Avatar

Fox doesn’t escape criticism, he was criticized rightfully last night and on other threads.

  44. Pete Avatar

Nemeth and Braun look to be an opposing playoff team’s dream pairing based on last night’s performance.

Nemeth is a mediocre bottom pair defenseman. We have had worse for sure, but he needs to be carried as opposed to being good enough to carry a rookie. Don’t know a ton about braun, so will withhold judgment for now.

My guess is we seem a steady rotation of nemeth, braun and schneider rest of the way to see which is the least odorous

  51. Wicky Avatar

If Lindgren is the guy that is gone…along with nemeth and chytil… you create 7.8 mil in space but that is before their replacements.

If a young guy from within is on the left, that’s an elc for one spot. I highly doubt the team would use two inexperienced guys on the left in addition to miller, so the third lefty would need to be a vet but at less of a cost than nemeth was so elc and vet for a total of $3 mil combined?

If so, you allow up to 4.8 for the Chytil spot or in the grand scheme if things 13.3 left for second and third line centres, kakko, and one other forward.

Fox’s fancy pants TO at the blue started the downward spiral. They were looking past the Devils to the Pens and the two quick goals were the worst thing that could happen for them. Stay with the gal that you brought to the prom. This is not indicative for a team that wins 40 games to date. Two things, subconsciously, they Rangers played extremely hard in their two wins over TB & the Canes. Extremely hard is the word. They got three new players and supposed to play better right. No, they scored early and thought this would be a cake walk. They stopped playing and watched the Devils play. I’ve never seen this team that disorganized. However, maybe most of the players said yeah lets seen what you can do. This rift will pass in time. It did bother me that Andrew Copp made sure he was almost the last person before Kreider to get off the ice. I know he’s close with Trouba but dude you just came; have some respect for the other guys your not our savior. This locker room must be one and everybody I spoke to agrees that there should be a mental adjustment shortly. I still go back to the Esposito Rod Gilbert splitting the clubhouse.

The uniforms they wore that day were horrible. Never thought i would see anything worse. Tonight i tuned into leafs and devils. You have to look at the crap they are wearing tonight. Whoever designs theses atrocitities has got to be blind. One good thing for the leaf fans is they would have to be rich and crazy to ever buy this stuff. This alternate jersey crap has got to end. Interesting stat for general consumption…in every full season (so his first 4 nhl seasons) Panarin’s centreman has never scored more than 27 goals…in fact they’ve scored 20, 27, 22, and 20 again…since then, his last two season have been shortened seasons and his centre has a prorated to 82 games goal pace of 21 and 21 goals…right in line with his other centres from 2 other teams (27 again being the highest)….

Not to mention Panarin’s scoring rate since he’s been with his current centre is the highest he’s had in his career

The games with the Pens will be a measure of how wise Drury’s shopping spree at the deadline was. If the new players don’t allow them to compete against the Pens he didn’t accomplish anything except squander a bunch of draft picks. Another option is to move Laffy with Copp to create 3 tandems if LW-C for more balance and offensive threat.

    THE-Mika-Hunt (Kakko)
    Bread-Stromeo-Vatrano
    Laffy-Copp-Goodrow
    Motte-Kegger-Reavo

    Guess who’s missing…

I think Hunt brings more to the table than others give him credit for

Copp is going to have a big role. Fans better get used to the idea. Some of their favorite players ice time is going to suffer because of it.

    from staple

    5th line and 3rd pair

Julien Gauthier, Greg McKegg, Ryan Reaves
Patrik Nemeth is still skating with Justin Braun.

Eventually I would like to see these 4 combos,
    Kreider, Zibanejad
    Panarin, Strome,
    Goodrow, Copp,
    Motte, Rooney.
Fill in the other 4 forwards as you see fit.

Prayer for Brett Howden. Scary hit by Forsberg. According to his coach he has movement in arms and legs and was still in hospital. With the speed of the game and the increased size of players over the years amazing to see these injuries and worse does not happen more often.

Howden was already falling, which we know he did a lot as a Ranger, but I’d say Forsberg should get at least a game. (It’s the NHL so who knows?) More importantly, as Jeff said, hopefully Howden’s ok.

The first thought I had after seeing the play was that Howden fell at least once per game with NYR. Seemed Forsberg was off balance too, so seemed accidental.

A LoneRanger briefly n0ted, interesting to see Copp not immediately realize he had to defer to Kreider leaving the ice. You could say that Copp is ether a born leader or presumptuous.

Hate seeing that play with Howden. Yikes.

10 years ago I was in a Halo Neck brace for a fracture from going headfirst into boards. Thank god my spinal cord was ok.

This year I finally got the courage or the insanity to get back on the ice in a mens league.

Had just been coaching up until 5 weeks ago. But it’s my favorite sport ever. I couldn’t stay away. Fingers crossed no further injuries.

Moving Laffy to LW3 is one thing but leaving Flip at 3C is a whole other level of wtf.
Imho Laffy has proven he can be a very good two way player in this league. The Dzone issues are where he needs to clean it up, but the other 2/3 he has been playing well.

Cregg- I played street hockey as a kid. When I was in my thirties, I learned how to roller blade and had the opportunity to play with some friends. I played into my early forties and had a blast until they tore our rink down. Now I’m in my early sixties and WAY out of shape. Don’t think I could play again if I wanted to. Anyway, I’m just saying that I’m glad you’re playing while you still can. Be safe and enjoy!
