Only saw the condensed game this morning. Georgiev with a couple of fat rebounds.
I did see some comments that it was the best they played all season. Is that accurate? That they played that well, and still gave up 6?
ilb2001
I don’t think that was the best game they’ve played. They attacked well because Edmonton isn’t that sturdy defensively. I think they’ve played better against Columbus or Nashville.
Admiral Akbar
They looked shell-shocked in the 3rd period. Georgiev giving rebounds, the team stopped skating, started to show the Oilers too much respect, and the Oilers—especially McDavid—took full advantage.
Goodrow looks good on the first line. Mika and Kreider were skating well. Georgiev is AWFUL and is costing this team points.
ilb2001
Edmonton collapsed mentally beginning of the second, Rangers in the third. I believe they win this game with Shesterkin.
ilb2001
Best game played by Chytil, that’s for sure. I wonder if it’s because he had Rooney playing on his line. Rooney has been the steadiest forward this season thus far.

Some observations by the Minx from last night’s hockey game. At this point in their careers Lafreniere and Krakko would be better served playing top line minutes in Hartford. They are basically insignificant on Broadway. However I’m not sure if Krakko is exempt from waivers. On McDavid highlight real goal does anyone know how to “Take The Body?” Joe Willie needed to just knock him on his rear end yes? Do they teach that anymore asking for a friend? On Panarin what the hell is going on? He looks small, slow, and scared, has he actually been neutered by Tom Wison? If this is the LOAF of Bread we have going forward the Rangers are in deep trouble. Really I’m not at all upset they lost last night they got a point with a below average goalie in net. I did say yesterday they had no chance of winning.

Gallant made a few comments about Lafrenière during training camp, that at the time everybody in the media thought Gallant was complimenting Lafrenière. I found the comments to be a little strange. Meeka give them and take them away; scored on two classic Meeka plays; PP and freewheeling ice rush. Made a dumb play not covering the middle of the ice on a PK and then a careless penalty to start the third which made the comeback almost a foreigner conclusion.
Rooney up on 3rd line leaves them. Without a checking line and they give up 5 in regulation. Playing Henks son leaves them without a Dman at the end of tonites game.

AA,
We have seen the tough love approach before. Torts did with a bunch of guys. Most prominent was Kreider. AV, and Quinn both did it Gretzky, I mean Buchnevich.

Last year, Kravtsov came over and eventually got into games. Quinn put him on the 4th line, but he still stood out. He did some good things; created some opportunities. Lafreniere didn’t stand out at all last night. Yeah, his TOI was limited and and he was with McKegg and Hunt, but we didn’t see him show why he was a 1st OA pick. Would he benefit from some time in Hartford? I something doesn’t change, would they do that?
I’ve been a big defender of Miller, but I wonder the same about him.
Whatever people think of Georgiev, I think the incident with DeAngelo affected him more than people think. I can imagine the comments he got from some fans on Twitter, etc. No way of knowing how it affected him with his teammates, but that could be a factor as well. Regardless, he’s never been the same goalie. Send him to Hartford. If he gets claimed, it might be the best thing for the team,(lose his cap hit), and for him to get a fresh start.

My take is GG is trying to teach Laffy how to be a pro which will pay dividends in the long run. The challenge of having so many young players on the roster is it’s a group lesson.
Bringing in Goodrow and playing him top line minutes speaks volumes. Kakko maybe the next to go down the lineup. Love to see Blais with Bread and Stromeo. 16 also having a middling stretch; does he get the 20 game COVID excuse as well?

Nils should not have made the team. Of the rookies trying to make the team, he was third. He offers nothing to this team that they don’t already have. 12 minutes a night, and he can’t be trusted to play D. Waste of a roster spot. If you had to have a rookie D man on the team, it should have been Schneider. He can at least defend. I would have kept none of them up. Let them ripen in Hartford. Play Tinordi, and Hajek the 12 minutes Nils gets.
ilb2001
Minx-on the current active roster only Miller, Lundkvist, Kakko and Lafreniere are waivers exempt.

Miller is also basically a rookie; hasn’t played 82 games yet and is getting top pair Dman minutes. Not adverse to getting two vet Dman to play for Hen’s son and Miller but let’s understand he is not playing protected minutes like Henk’s kid.

Othman, and Korzac having big offensive starts to there season. Grubbe filling the STAT sheet. Goals, assists, and PIMS.

Second line needs to get it going. Bread needs space to create and that requires the opposite winger to win 50/50 board battles and quickly move puck. Challenge is Kakko can win those battles but doesn’t then move the puck to his linemates and move to open areas or front of net.
Kakko has been very good in neutral and Dzone however. Just tough when you dominate your age group because of your size and skill at 18 that you are no longer that big not skilled in comparison to men playing for pay.
Slingin’ Sammy Blais maybe the answer, but they cannot have all the yutes on Line 3 again; will not work for a playoff team.

Panarin is going to take some time to adjust to a new system. It’s not necessarily what he does, it’s that his teammates aren’t as wide open for puck support as he’s used to. Both d-men and forwards, because they have more specific defensive responsibilities. It takes him a second or so longer to find someone, hence his giveaways. He is not going to dump and chase. Still a PPG player at the moment.

Time for KAM to go to Hartford and learn the game. Let Selma play a couple of games. Can he be any worse? If he plays ok it will increase his trade value which seems to be all they plan for him at this point. Of course if they don’t call anyone up the D in Hartford will get crowded and one of them may wind in the ECHL. I’d risk sending Georgie down as well. He’s a backup at this point and most teams won’t take on his salary for that role. Kinkaid is a cheaper adequate backup.
Also, they decided to play the Oilers game last night. They actually got outhit by the Oilers. They were not very tough to play against. Have to hit them to slow them down a bit. Third period collapses in consecutive games is a concern as well. They don’t know how to play with a lead.
ilb2001
Second wrist shot and goal by Kreider off wing. I think once Lafreniere gets more minutes ( and i have no doubt he will) moving Kreider on the R permanently may solve a lot of lineup issues. As much as I like Goodrow and his game so far, I don’t think first line is his position long term.

The laffo busto stuff is not shocking or surprising snd had been mentioned by several others since preseason and me yesterday…seeing the mental fortitude of the guy.
Darius should have made the roster over georgisieve, but I’m guessing it was a waiver thing.
I don’t think Zamboni is doing as poorly as many make him out to be (as pointed out yesterday his scoring rate is lower but it’s still not terrible). There certainly is a further down the road question with him and a highly structured system (not that he won’t score but he usually wants to go elsewhere after being in one for a couple seasons).
The Zamboni potential points reduction (again, he is still going to score plenty just maybe not at previous seasons rates) might also make it easier for the organization to move on from strome should they be so inclined.
I love this team, regardless of who is scoring or what line they are playing on. They make a couple player moves and it’s going to be even more enjoyable to watch. It’s a refreshing change from the dark years with the hedgehog.

Backup goalie was not going to be a problem…….or so I thought. Turns out I was incorrect. Time to get Kinkaid up and send Georgie to Hartford. No way they should have blown that game last night. It should have ended 5-2 or 5-3. It would have if Igor was playing.
SN
There are still some very young players on this roster that probably should not be playing here if better options existed. Gorts/DQ was the babysitter regime and has been replaced by tough love Dreary and the GG the task master. The team will be the better for it.
Pete
don’t think there is any reason to call Laf a bust now, but it’s ok to be honest and acknowledge he has to improve a lot, which Gallant has made every public twice in press conferences and being moved steadily down the lineup. 9mins a night on the 4th line is something that should only happen a couple games before they either feel he is ready to move back to top 9 or be better off playing 20+ mins a night in hartford for a couple months.
also think Gallant needs to enforce discipline with the pp, instead of letting that first group play 145 or so, which was a huge failing by Quinn as well. Need to give guys like Kakko, Laf and Chytil time on be creative on the pp where they have more space
In 2009-10 the Rangers lost the final game of the regular season to the Filth,(in a shootout-see Olli Jokinen). As a result the Flyers made the playoffs and eliminated the Rangers. Philadelphia went to the Finals where they lost to Chicago in 6 games.
Hank played in 73 games and got 35 wins that year. Between Valiquette, Chad Johnson, Alex Auld and Matt Zaba, the Rangers only got 3 wins from their backups. Backup goalies matter.
SN
Matt Zaba update?
Beezle
I don’t know that they win that game with Igor in nets either.
First off, they gave up 79 shot attempts. 79! Defense allowed too many bodies in front, often not well covered. Time of possession? From mid-point of 2nd on the game was pretty much all in NYR end
Btw – you can see those charts for every game. Very telling about the continued problems the NYR defense has in front of their own net.

A few other team stats:
scoring chances for: 192 against: 248 league average: 211
high danger chances for: 47 against: 68 league average: 63
NYR can vastly improve their game by a) learning how to get the puck out of their own end on the first try and b) making an effort to possess the puck in the offensive zone for more than one shot or a fly by.

I agree – give the ‘kid’ a break – BUT – Gallant owes a better answer than that.

This is still a very young team. If you look around at other teams in division; you can see why it will be an uphill climb without the yutes stepping up in a much bigger way. This is a very inexperienced team.
NYR Player (Games Played) – Chytil (197), Fox (134), Blais (129), Lindgren (127), Kakko (121), Laffy (67), Miller (64), Igor (55) Lunqvist (8)
Yutes getting regular turns (Games Played) with top of division teams:
NYR average age is 26.2 vs league 28.0 In division, Carolina 27.9, Wash 29.0, CBJ 26.1, Filth 28.5, NJD 26.3, Pit 28.2, NYI 29.6
SN it would be more telling to look at total time on ice and not just games played. For instance, Miller has 20:33 ATOI. I’d say that is order double what most young defenders on other rosters would have at the same point.
Svechnikov has ATOI 16:06 compared to our Chytil (14:00) and Kakko (14:19). Necas has 15:16. Wahlstrom 12:08.

They need some 60 minute men. Look it up on You Tube.
There is something wrong with LOAF?
Truth.
Beezle
And yes, I completely forgot about the game and had to watch the replay this morning.
🙄
Shuddap!
Don’t see anyone taking on Georgie salary with a waiver claim …addition by subtraction
Seems the only guy that called Georgiev out for poor play is now excelling in Carolina…..remind me who we got for him in that deal?
Valley was honest about Georgie last night post game …honest but didn’t throw him under the bus
Backup goalie was not going to be a problem…….or so I thought. Turns out I was incorrect. Time to get Kinkaid up and send Georgie to Hartford. No way they should have blown that game last night. It should have ended 5-2 or 5-3. It would have if Igor was playing.
There are still some very young players on this roster that probably should not be playing here if better options existed. Gorts/DQ was the babysitter regime and has been replaced by tough love Dreary and the GG the task master. The team will be the better for it.
don’t think there is any reason to call Laf a bust now, but it’s ok to be honest and acknowledge he has to improve a lot, which Gallant has made every public twice in press conferences and being moved steadily down the lineup.

Give the kid a break is right
In 2009-10 the Rangers lost the final game of the regular season to the Filth,(in a shootout-see Olli Jokinen).

Matt Zaba update?
I don’t know that they win that game with Igor in nets either.
First off, they gave up 79 shot attempts. 79! Defense allowed too many bodies in front, often not well covered. Time of possession? From mid-point of 2nd on the game was pretty much all in NYR end
From hockeyreference dot com
Btw – you can see those charts for every game. Very telling about the continued problems the NYR defense has in front of their own net.
need to split out PP v 5v5; but you could see how Earler success on PPs gave them jump as they were down watching their goalie unable to make stops as well.
ORF – 11:02- insightful
A few other team stats:
scoring chances for: 192 against: 248 league average: 211
high danger chances for: 47 against: 68 league average: 63
NYR can vastly improve their game by a) learning how to get the puck out of their own end on the first try and b) making an effort to possess the puck in the offensive zone for more than one shot or a fly by.
I agree – give the ‘kid’ a break – BUT – Gallant owes a better answer than that.
No more Mary Jane fly-bys. Stop at he net, bother the goalie and find a rebound.
Troobs may make mistakes here and there, but he has the mental part down – nasty on ice, cheerful off.
I had a golf partner some years back who just hated to lose and relentlessly gritted and cursed and goaded me, the opposition, and himself. Off the course, you couldn’t find a more gentle, humorous, thoughtful man.
Canes: 2- Svetchnikov (200), Necas (134)
Craps: 1 – Fehervary (16)
Azzes: 3 – Dobson (88), Wahlstrom (61), Sorokin (30)
Pitts: 0
Flyers: 1- Farabee (116)
A few days late on this, but: Braves with the first part of the Scottsdale’s division rival wins a championship triple crown for 2021-2022 (Cowboys in February, isles in June). Pain.
So they lost 2 OTs on defensive failures by KAM in Vancouver and Mika last night. The way Shesty is playing should they be conservative in OT and depend on him in the shootout like Renney did with young Hank?
The Olgas fired their coach.
