Flip is a scoring forward, needs to be on wing so he has more of those chances to convert. These were scorer’s goals, all scored while he was shooting with nobody around him. He has 31 Even Strength assists in 186 games, can’t win faceoffs and is lost in dzone, has not shown to be an nhl center yet. Maybe he turns the corner with Gallant. I argue to make him a winger to leverage his strengths and get some 2way centers in here to allow him and the other wingers to flourish

    My not so humble brag.

After first preseason game I said tinordi looked better than Nemeth.

Many of the brunch crowd continued their preconceived tinordi hate

Now. After a full pre season it’s nice to feel vindicated that maybe he’s not just a face puncher. But a 29 yo in his prime that is big and mobile

Zero fights and one of our more steady defenders with some decent timing on pinching in the offensive zone and getting it out of our defensive zone

    #vindication phase 1

You have a really good point, but it’s easier said than done. You’re going to need to give one or two of those wingers to find that center. Krakko? Lafreniere? Kravtsov? Chytil?

Can’t say enough about the way Rooney competes. Makes it tough for Barron, who in my opinion is an NHL player right now.

Kakko has been very impressive. The confidence that the 4 youths played with last night was very encouraging.

Chyt-Maps goals were all high skill plays—and were made through traffic. I really like him with Goodrow (who can spell Chytil and take a faceoff). Kravtsov adds some more high end skill to what I’d consider to be a dangerous third line.

Kaako, Lafreniere, Blais, Strome all enjoyable to watch and we’re engaged.

Agree 100% on Tinordi, cregg7 — the guy just makes small plays that are effective. It was interesting to note he was less involved in the post-whistle fireworks last night than Nemeth… a team could do worse with Tinordi/Nemeth as your 6/7 defensemen. And when you’ve got Jones, Schneider, et al waiting in the wings, there is pressure to perform.

Trouba looked fine (altho I’d rather see Kreider as captain), as did Fox, and even Miller was ok. Lindgren was involved at both ends of the ice — especially deft at getting his shots on net.

    Bdl

They are going to need Tinordi. I’m not quite sold that Nils is going to hold up when the intensity of the regular season amps up. Some big rugged teams in the conference.

  8. Admiral Akbar Avatar

With regards to the Fishies — they definitely looked a bit smug, particularly Lee.

Islanders played like a team that is used to winning and expects to win.

Funny I was wondering what the outcome of this game would have been if Nils (and even Zibanejad) had been playing.

Tinordi and Nemeth was nice to have together… which is why I don’t think we’ll see Nils and Jones together in the lineup as regulars (barring injury to others)

It wouldn’t be shocking if the Nemeth, Tinordi pair is together opening night.

BDL – 1000% of Joe Willie and Tinordi as a pair, both looked impressive. Lindgren has not looked good all camp, hope he is just trying to keep away from any stitches until regular season.

Chytil first two goals were high skill lasers, 1 on the power play, didn’t see the last of in OT on a 4 on 3. They were not high traffic plays in front. Kids has great hands and gets after it on the forecheck with his speed. Great atTributes for a winger, square peg in round hole at center. Best thing that could have happened for his trade value was last nights game.

Drury needs a plan for the center position as the wings have a lot of talent. Until some clarity arrives, team will be a work in progress.

The hit by Mayfield on Stromeo was a dirty play. Stromeo watching puck and Mayfield literally hits Stromeo when he is tracking the puck carrier in the middle of the zone and then no penalty. Wtf??

Would be a different sport if you could hit defenders while they try to cover the puck carrier..

I thought Chytil’s shots were made with a man on him or at least close-in. I don’t know if you wanna call that traffic, but he definitely wasn’t wide open on the perimeter. Either way, it’s something we want to see a lot more of…

And it was amazing to see Chytil, Lafreniere, and Kaako in OT, much less a power play, for an extended and game-tilting shift. Things are different post Dairy Queen.

Last night is the way we need to play if we’re going to have success!
It was a simple “north-south” game with effective special teams.
There can be no floaters…. no passengers.
DJ, Bread and THE Kreider are literally 3 of our top 6… So, if they’re floating around, they not only set an example for the rest of the team, but they take up valuable minutes. I think a view from the press box was just what they needed, although they should know what it takes to win at this stage.

It’s the same old, same old with these NHL refs, fugging incompetent. I turned the game off when Kratsov tried to go around a islander defender and was literally tackled, no call, 10 seconds later idiot ref calls penalty on Fox because he reach out and touch an islander’ player’s glove.

Chytil last night was the Chytil we have been waiting for. If he can play with that intensity during the regular season this will be very enjoyable to watch. It was especially gratifying watching him mix it up in scrums to get the puck.

That would be quite a haul for the Sabres and the Ranger Twitterverse would explode. Great effort without the big guns (other than Fox) last night. Giving up 4 was the only negative. Lindgren has been shaky in the exhibition games. He needs to be better when they count. Tinordi looks like a 3rd pair D which I wasn’t sure about. Not sure what they do about Hayek now other than say good bye. Can’t trade him. Teams will just wait for him to go on waivers. If Strome is good to go they should be ready for Wednesday.

  26. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

Just watched the Strome collision GIF in Carp’s article. That was interference. Mayfield set a moving pick for Clutterbuck to pick up a loose puck. Legal in lacrosse but not in hockey. There is no way the low ref in the corner didn’t see it, but, he decided to play on.

  27. SN Avatar
    SN

ORF – textbook interference- Mayfield was looking right at Strome, no accident. It’s almost as if Joe’s Miss-a-plenty goes out of his way to give every opponent the benefit of the doubt vs Rangers.

they do not allow that in lax anymore but back in the day ‘Man-Ball’ had some nasty collisions. Unfortunately lax is a very tame sport compared to days of yore.

    Let’s go!!!!

Really hope strome and Reaves are healthy. Other than that, we got out of the pre season what we needed. Can you believe their meaningless record was 4-2. After the first game I thought it would be 1-5 if they were lucky.

  29. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

I haven’t officiated LAX for the last 15 years but man-ball used to be legal. I never understood why picks had to be stationary if you had possession but not on a loose balls. Glad man-ball isn’t legal anymore. All you could do was call unnecessary roughness on the really bad ones and get in a argument with the coach.
I don’t think Mayfield meant to hurt Strome-just get in his way. But the rules should be enforced.

The yutes all look like they are ready take the next step relative to their individual skill sets but the preseason was as much about the new guys and at first blush they are exactly would this roster needed; bottom 6, bottom pair depth, physicality and capable hockey players.

Favorite play from last nights game was during a scrum after Pullock was being assessed a minor, he was trying to draw someone off with him; Blais grabbed him from behind giving him a nasty face wash while bending his head/neck backwards. Rarely has NYR been on the giving, rather than receiving end, of those little plays that happen all game long.

I have mixed emotions on this… 8.5 is reasonable… 8 years… well, thats a long time. Also, while I appreciate his regular season production… I’m quite concerned with his disappearing act in the bubble/when we play heavier teams and time/space shrink where you HAVE to get your nose dirty. I just don’t want to be in another position where this rebuild takes us to “very good” but not good enough like 2011-2017.

To be honest. He didn’t give much of a discount off his market ask.
    7yr 10m. $70m.
    8×8.5 68m.

And drury paid it. I dunno I hope it works out. Our success is now directly tied to Mika. That’s just the way it is now. Our entire rebuild will be tied to this decision. All these years of dealing with the losing and seasons with no expectations. A unique chance and situation in rangers history: and it’s tied to Mika being a number 1 guy capable of driving through 4 rounds of the playoffs.

That’s the part that concerns me. That’s he’s not just one of the guys like even a Panarin can be on the wing. He needs to be our number 1 center going up against the best centers in the world for the biggest prize.

I really don’t like that premise and reality as a 32 year long ranger fan. That this whole decade maybe even 15 years of accumulating developing and going for it. Will no matter what other guys do, always bank on what Mika does.

This whole rebuild was carefree until today. Now there’s always gonna be some built in concern that won’t be alleviated until we actually break through and win one. At least that’s how I feel about it

i hear what you are saying to an extent Ilb, and don’t get me wrong i’m fine with this deal overall, but it’s this offseason is when they have to sign Fox, Kakko, kravtsov and strome or his replacement.

Even with this being a slightly below market deal, think Strome almost has to be gone now for cap reasons. They perhaps could still squeeze him in and get everyone else locked up, but it would be awfully right and they’d have very little wiggle room if they did (with Laf needing a new deal the year after) and they’d be susceptible to an offersheet for sure on kakko this year or Laf next year

And Jpp, definitely not without risk on this one, but the reality of Gorton never developing an in-house alternative

  71. Jpp2.0 Avatar
    Jpp2.0

    All that aside.

He’s an 8.5m player. I think 8.5 is spot on for his value.

  72. Jpp2.0 Avatar

It’s not gortons fault the rangers moved up by winning the lottery.

Before moving up for Kakko the rangers were gonna take zegras

And if they didn’t move up and get laffy they would have taken lundell in their original position.

Us winning the draft lottos is the real reason we don’t have a blue chip young center and our rebuild produced a lot of top end talent on the wings

  73. tomk19 Avatar
    tomk19

If this deal means Strome is gone, who’s replacing Strome? How much less are we paying our 2c than what Strome will get? I was really down on Strome after the bubble debacle and when he showed up (I believe) out of shape at the start of last season. I wish he were a bit stronger and a little better defensively, but he’s won me over.

The truth is that if Zibanajad is our 1c, a grittier, more defensive 2c would be ideal. The problem is that there is such a shortage of top 6 centers out there. I think they could wind up extending Strome too.

Alex, only if they let it get to that, which is why they really shouldn’t be locking up strome longterm. It was almost always gonna be the case they were going to pay one top 6 money, but in this case he came in at $1.5m/yr less than Eichel.

Remember the player has to sign the offer sheet and I have seen nothing thus far to suggest Fox or Laf would want to sign an offersheet that would put the rangers in a terrible situation. If Kakko has a truly monster year this season, it’s not impossible someone gives him a big offer, but again not a sure thing by any means a team would do so or he would sign it.

It is not only the risk involved in trading for an athlete who would undergo disk replacement surgery that is unprecedented for an NHL player. Going to be an interesting day in Rangers land. Still have a minimum 2 cuts to make, and 3 guys who would have to clear waivers to be sent down. Being that the Rangers did not waive any of them yesterday, does that put them on the team? If so, would they really send Nils down? Imagine the reaction to that.

BDL, today is the day they need to cut roster down, but if Strome or Reaves need to go on short-term IR they can delay the decision on some combo of Barron, Hunt and Goat. I think they carry Tinordi and Hajek as extras until Drury can make a deal.

I will never understand a fans need to break up a team so quickly. The Rangers have their veteran core under contract for the foreseeable future, and their young core under their control for the foreseeable future. They are getting ready to contend. What the heck is the rush to trade this guy, and buyout that guy?

  130. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

    Good morning, boneheads!

  131. ilb2001 Avatar

It took a lot to convince Mika’s camp
to sign a $8.5M AAV contract, it seems. It’s fully buyout protected with $60M out of $68M paid in bonuses. He also has a full NMC until 7 days prior to deadline in his last contract year. Then it changes to 21 team no trade list.

  133. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

    Ilb,
Am I correct that a player waived needs 24 hrs to clear or be claimed, and until then is considered a roster player? If that is correct, and nobody goes to IR, then Nils and Barron are going to Hartford.

  134. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

Take it easy guys, I’m not advocating to do anything, just saying there are always options out there if the rangers need to free up cap space in a few years when the pups would need new contracts.

  135. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

I also find it interesting that teams are starting to give front loaded contracts again. Mika’s is. It’s not as front loaded as it used to be because of the new variability rules, but still. His contract starts in 2022, so his escrow will be capped at 10% that year and 6% after. And my guess is because of this new TV contract the league isn’t really worried about players falling too far behind in what they owe to the owners by the end of this CBA.

I kinda feel likes there’s nothing to talk about anymore. Only thing there is to do is watch the games and observe on them.

You gotta think drury is hoping internal candidates secure their hoped upon roles and the only roster building talk is what extensions look like

A surprise trade for young center who can grow into a 200 foot two way 2C maybe.

Suddenly what they want to do and decide to do with strome is the biggest question. Undoubtedly has something special with Panarin but re-signing him really put drury in a position where he has to bridge guys he should probably lock up long term if he can (Kakko)

And as long as strome is on the roster will the coach ever separate him from panarin. And how do you give chytil that chance wouldn’t doing that.

The d pairings and the 6-7 guys will sort itself out by play. So there are no questions there right now in my mind.

What happens with strome and chytil is the biggest question looming over the rangers now.

Other than that it’s about the games and the team developing

The roster still needs to shake out as their are 9 forwards for six slots in top 6. By default Cheadle drops to 3C so that leaves Goat Boy and Krapsoft on the outs in top 6 imho. Despite the fact that he’s lost a step, I still love Sam.
I can’t understand why Micheletti insists on defending the perp and the refs nearly every time a Ranger gets cheap shotted or if the other team just gets away with something. It’s part of the game. Players test the limits. Refs miss calls. To ignore it and cover up mistakes as much as he does makes him a stooge for the league and frankly a part of the problem. Is he interested in working for the league some day? I’m guessing it has more to do with his gig doing national coverage games. Dave Maloney and even JD didn’t do that. (Espo was probably over the top as a homer color commentator/broadcaster). Micheletti needs to know his audience, call out refs mistakes and frankly, his bosses at the MSG network should be all over him about that.

  155. SN Avatar

Nobody is saying Sam Rosen is not a great guy, nice person, and a good neighbor. His calls with JD in the 90s were epic. But NYR fans have also been spoiled with Kenny and Dave on the radio as a direct comparison to Salmon Joe calling games.

I actually think Strome could handle a shift to 3C and make that line better, where Chytil may benefit more being with a puck distributing wing like Panarin as 2C.

As I said before, I almost consider Mika a top wing and Panarin the 1C based on their skill set. Seems Chytil would be better served working as a wing type role. Only downside is he’d still be taking faceoffs, unless Laf moves to C on that line (which is a lot to ask now).

As far as not playing kids on bottom 6. Barron was projected to be exactly that at the moment. Bottom 6. Can’t have Barron or Kravtsov as a thirteenth forward or a 4th liner. Simple as that. No more of this bottom six with guys that don’t fit the role stuff.
They don’t want to lose Hajek or Gauthier for nothing either. Some things to work out on D obviously but could be insurance for Nils since it’s only a matter of when he’s overmatched not if he’s overmatched on the NHL level.

Also, doubt Reaves is 100% and I doubt we’ll see him play 82 even though he very well could.

I think I hit the “like” button on too many comments it dilutes their meaning.

    Similar to naming 6 captains

But I guess it’s a good problem I have likening some much of what I read here I’m an easy grader. To those that don’t get the like button don’t fret, your time will come. I don’t necessarily dislike you, it just may have been a miss or something I wasn’t totally feelin’.
