As expected by many, Adam Fox became the fourth D-man in Rangers history to win the prestigious Norris Trophy as the best defenseman in the league. Last time NYR D-man won it was in 1996-97 season, by a fellow named Brian Leetch. He also became one of the only two D-men to ever win it during his sophomore season. The other guy? Bobby Orr.
Congratulations to Adam! He actually won it pretty handily, edging second place Cale Makar by almost 100 points (743 to 655), and third place Hedman by over 300 points (743 to 433). Pretty impressive!

First? Where is everyone?
Good for him. Nice to see a Ranger win a big award. Especially for a club who missed the playoffs.
Congrats Foxy….as I’ve said before….your next Ranger captain
Make Foxy Captain and he can slowly melt away answering the same inane after-game questions every night for the rest of his life.
Yay…sure hope he is NOT the captain!
Miller vastly over-rated. Take immediate advantage of that by dealing him and move up one of our gritty prospects.
Trouba is going to be next Captain, I’m pretty certain. He earned it. And I think this year it’s absolutely crucial they name one.
Nice bouffant.
If you make Troubadour Captain, the least you could do is to get him a competent partner.
Leetch flourished with Beuke.
I guess everyone knows we signed Lindgren 3 years, $3 Mil per?
2021 Trophy Count

Foxy’s Pop: “Adam, we’re planning a celebration cookout in the back yard Sunday noon. Put it on your calendar.”
“Dad, I don’t do cookouts anymore. Make it Peter Luger’s.”
Glad flower won the Vézina too
Wow, congratulations to Fox. Good for him winning it sophomore year.
I really figured Makar would take it in a land slide with the way NHL talking heads talk him up so much. Nice to see they don’t make these decisions.
Trouba should have been named captain last season.
C3- I’m sure Isles fans wanted Pullock to win it. Isles get screwed again!
RIGGED!!!
Trouba will be Gallant’s guy.
Congrats Adam Fox!
Dude! Where’s Makar?
Olga
SWEET!
1. Excellent for Fox….well deserved.
2. I wish Miller and Shaggy would do something constructive with their hair. They both look ridiculous….almost like mental patients.
Rich
Lmmfao…the guy 19 seconds in is definitely you
Does Fox win the Norris if TDA didn’t get dumped?
Wick
Lol……oh my goodness.
Wilson wins the Chuck Norris.
Good pairing – The Fox and The Hound.
Hank wins the Heart Trophy
Garden raises each ticket price by $10 in order to pay Quinn extra to keep his mouth shut.
(Yawn)
So the sly fox won the Norris huh.
(Yawns)
Some think it’s surprising that the NHL media voters did the right thing and voted for him. I always felt there was a good chance he was gonna win, why?
Bc teams shifted from a screw Fox he power maneuvered his way to the rangers and made us all look impotent, so we aren’t gonna highlight him, to screw the rangers, let’s give him the Norris was the Rangers have to overpay for him long term
All half-jokes aside. Congrats to Foxy. He plays for the right reasons, love of the game and to give the fans something to enjoy having grown up in a family who lived the fan side of it beforehand.
Oh A part of that Norris Trophy belongs to Tank Lindgren.
I called that pairing so long ago and was laughed with a ‘Lindgren doesn’t even look like he’s gonna make the NHL, I doubt the rangers made this trade for fox envisioning a fox and Lindgren pairing’ bc it was too much connecting the dots and JPP just comes up with outlandish ideas and notions and theories
Will admit from what I saw pre-NHL regular season debuts. I didn’t think Lindgren had the skating to make it.
The amount of credit both those guys deserve shouldn’t be overshadowed by Fox winning the Norris. Fox doesn’t win a Norris this year with any other player in the league. We have Gorts to thank for this
The Fox and the Hound
Fox is not where he is at so quickly if he didn’t have Lindgren as his partner.
Yup, you were definitely the only who thought Lindgren could play.
Congrats to Adam Fox!
Not too bad for a Rangers fan from Jericho (Islander country).
😉
Fox is not where he is at so quickly if Tony D didn’t get “gulaged”…
I like this game!
Who’s next?
Who should Fox send thank you card to for taking out Tony D? Gorton? Quinn?
Oh for God sake GET OVER THE TONY D THING HE WAS NOT A GOOD DEFENSEMAN. I got news for you- his political affiliation doesn’t make him “good” anymore than it makes him “bad”.
Go watch some highlights of him in his own zone. Oh that’s right you won’t find any because he sucked in his zone.
Maybe find some Pens highlight reel goals. I’m sure you’ll see him on there.
You blokes have been yammering on about wanting the next Brian Leetch for like a decade. You finally get him and now you find a way to ruin it. Amazing.
BDL,
I think it was Doodie who wasn’t too high on Lindgren. Said something to the effect of “Great. You guys can cheer while the opposition scores a goal because this guy takes himself out of a play to throw a big hit”.
Oh I remember that James.
There’s good news and bad news about Carp’s latest article. The Good news is he isn’t including blunt statements about the firings anymore.
The bad news is that he’s going the passive aggressive route instead….
“a rebuilding team that, depending on whom you ask, might be close to turning a corner and competing for a championship in the next few years”
“how Fox handles moving forward without Quinn was fired at the end of the season, along with Jacques Martin and Jeff Gorton, who acquired Fox from Carolina for a pair of second-round draft picks.”
“So Fox will have to adjust to a revamped front office, a new coaching staff under Gerard Gallant and likely a somewhat upgraded roster”
….Yeah. I know most great defensemen really struggle when the front office goes through some turn over. And when you upgrade a roster? Forget it. Adjustment city!
Credit Gorton though. This player is only here because he was able to acquire him from Carolina for 2 draft picks. Of course, the player told his agent “make me a NY Ranger I’m not going to play here”….but that was part of Gorton’s astounding acquisition talent if you think about it…
Remember Rico Fata? Would have been a Ranger legend had the Garden not changed vendor supply companies that year..
Pavel Brendl had his career derailed when the Zamboni driver was fired too. And that was the shame too because he had a plan for the ice that summer- same plan that the new driver had to execute.
BDL, I’m not trying to re-open this can of worms but I couldn’t help thinking about how good this blueline would be if the top four was Mac, Fox, Trouba, Lindgren. That’s a top four you can go to war with. And the money would have worked too. It’s a damn shame.
Congrats to Fox! What’s the rest of the blue line going to look like when Drury’s done?
“TONY D WAS NOT A GOOD DEFENSEMAN” brought to you by Georgie’s agent
I may be his agent but I sure don’t pretend like he’s Mike Richter.
And I call BS on this narrative in today’s NHL that a “Good” d-man is one that scores 40+ points despite being detrimental to his team around his own net.
Tom, with any luck there will be 2 big bodies added. One to play with Miller and one to play with Trouba.
‘Fox will have to adjust to a re-vamped Front Office?’ Carp said that? Foxy’s 23, smart, healthy, carrying a Norris on his belt. Adjust to what?
I think Carp is the one that has to adjust. Can’t go into next season carrying the weight of JD and Gorton’s firings on his shoulders.
Gorton got incredibly lucky. And even then, his luckies AGAIN couldn’t scare the Playoffs in a League where almost everybody makes the Post Season.
Put Miller in a package before he’s seen for what he is, The Emperor With No Clothes.
Having read Carp for many, many, and not always agreeing with him, but always respecting his opinion, it seems like Carp got to close to the situation with the FO and coaching staff. He has been writing like he has taken the entire thing personally.
when Tony D puts up 50 points this season on a 1-2 Million dollar contract we can discuss again whether he is a good defenseman
Ooggaaa ooogaaa! James ANGRY! Ooggaa ooggaa! 😾
Good morning, boneheads!
Post updated for Carp’s new article.
Are we not happy that we got a Norris winner? Him winning the trophy has very little to do with DeAngelo. For the record, I thought initially, right after Drury took over, that he may reverse their course with DeAngelo for a few reasons. One, that would be a better asset management, even though DeAngelo hasn’t played for a year. And two, Drury wasn’t there when Gorton and JD announced Tony played his last game in NY.
One more thing. We need to appreciate what Fox did this season. He won it by a margin. Because while his offensive game was comparable to both Makar’s and Hedman’s, he was much better defensively.
bobbyo the only way D’Anger puts up 50 as a ‘good’ defenseman is if they make him a forward.
So time to move Fox, right? Sell high?
Beezle he put up 53 with Rangers in 68 games so 50 is not out of the question in an 80 game season with regular powerplay time ….but then again he sucks
ILB,
Do you know what wasn’t right? The NHL network painted this picture for fans outside of the MSG network about Fox being defensively shaky most of the season. And at the same time talking about how dominant Makar was on both sides of the puck. They referred to Fox as “figuring it out” defensively.
And Marty Biron actually said sometime in March/April that Fox wasn’t even in his top three as far as top Norris candidates. He said that in addition to Hedman and Makar he felt that the best Norris candidates were Nurse out in Edmonton and I think he mentioned one other name.
That’s a big plate of crow for them to swallow. Felt that was unfair of them to criticize him and I’m sure part of it is that most of the guys on those radio shows really do not like the Rangers.
50 points… minus-something for the year and most likely on a non playoff team that’s horrible defensively like the Rangers were with him on the team….but man, those 50 points!
LOL C3, I didn’t know you had an ooga horn for when I get cranky. 🙂
I know it’s really hot outside and all but my Tony D post was sarcastic. I didn’t think you guys need me to clarify that. Losing step, kids…
Contrast Fox to D’Anger. Fox can actually play a respectable defense. D’Anger at best a handful of games a year. If you want a 50pt guy that can’t really play defense you want a forward.
I do, James. It’s a B I G one, too 😀
except if your powerplay sucks and it costs you wins and a playoff spot ..I think Tony winds up in Vegas or St Louis and will do fine
Foxy’s main asset in the D zone is getting the puck out of the D zone with smarts and alacrity. Let us not confuse him with a true shut- down DMan.
C3, I saw ORF make a similar comment and just figured it was a topic of convo. Plus I haven’t baited Bobby in a couple of days so the opportunity was there.
Truth be told the heat is making me VERY cranky though. James doesn’t like when his ooga horn sweats. 🙂
“I like people who don’t need everyone to like them.” – Tony Soprano.
2017/18, 18/19, 19/20:
GP G A PTS S% TOI FO% HIT BLK TK GV212 89 135 224 11.5 4426 45.6 162 128 120 204
211 98 098 196 14.9 4212 49.9 277 179 160 175
Still not seeing what Eichel, Eichel all day is bringing other than a neck injury, loss of tradable assets, a hit of 1/8th of the cap and (if healthy) a few extra years of youth.
Overall he is worse at FO, makes far fewer hits and blocks, and has a much higher net give aways. Is that what NYR need in a 1C (he better be a 1C for that price)? Also note the 214 more minutes played. That’s the equivalent of about 10 games.
Wonder how engaged Eichel will be in front of the net, forechecking and defensively with a surgically repaired neck? More or less than he has been so far in his career?
Hard no. There will always be another shiny.
Oh, I didn’t see ORF comment… frankly, 99% of the time I only read my own comments 🙂
Keep that ooga horn dry, James lol
BDL
I have to be honest.
I actually said i wasn’t sure if Lindgren was gonna make it bc of his skating, but that the rangers definitely had it in mind and we’re hoping to be able to try them together.
So uh, yeah that’s not what I was saying back then.
I was saying the rangers knew Fox was staying in college until he became UFA and that Gorts targeted Lindgren from Boston in the trade with the prospect of being able to pair the WjC pairing together at the NHL level.
But you know what. However you want to take it to mean. That’s your perspective 🙂
Well we couldn’t trade Tony D for a bag of used pucks, not even a 7th round pick. So I’m not sure how good the kid really was. Safe to say he could make this team anymore. I doubt he could make the Kraken, until he grows up.
James we would all be less cranky if Gorton/JD didn’t mismanage the asset
Hey BDL
Every time wicky brings up something he brought up and has been saying for years.
Do you tell him every time
‘Yeah you were the only one to think that’
Yeah/no?
Pretty sure No
unless your texting him breaking his balls behind the scenes 🙂
You guys are lucky I don’t reference all the correct things I’ve called, I could do it all day everyday
TRUTH
Bob-O,
Isles went pretty far with a modest offense, no? Their PK could have used some work though.
Rangers have 2x as much offensive skill. Their success will not depend on a PP QB. It’ll depend on their ability to shut down the opponent in their own zone.
I for one think that’s gotta be the design of this team going forward if it’s being built for the post season.
Montreal’s defense looks pretty good in these playoffs. Shea WWEber has one goal all post season. Hedman has one.
I think Pietrangelo is the only exception in the post season as he went 4-8-12 on a team that is a sum of it’s parts on offense.
Find me another team that’s being led through the post season by an offensive dman.
If Drury thought the team would be better with D’Anger and his cap hit he would re-instate. Clearly he views the alternative players + buyout as the better way.
I’m sure he’ll listen to any offers before doing the buyout but seems other teams are willing to risk a bidding war for D’Anger’s services instead.
Bobby you have to read more Carp articles. JG was a legendary GM.
More importantly ADA clearly doesn’t have much value around the league. Yes, 5 teams inquired but what were they really willing to give up? Nothing good if it wasn’t worth trading him and the majority of his salary away.
I don’t want his career to be over. I just don’t like his game and never have.
Just give me one.
LOL, C3 <3
ADA is gonna have more value at half the cap hit
I think Drury knows he has a boatload of young defensemen making Tony D expendable via buy out. My point yesterday is why rush the buyout if things change based on upcoming draft, potential trades etc. Signaling buyout just eliminates leverage and options
Truth
BDL one what?
JPP was going to list all of the things he called, I’m just asking for one James.
Well you have one James! I’m right here : D
Are people for real with this Alec Martinez should be a Ranger stuff? Bleck!
So here’s my question. Coos you are exempt from having to answer lol.
Should Drury go out and find a top pairing Dman for Trouba? Essentinally making the third pairing Miller-UFA RHD?
Jpp
You’re a comedy act today.
It seems like you have no idea what you are talking about most times and you’re all over the board.
Don’t get all over bdl becaused he called you out on an inaccuracy in one of your statements, because it was inaccurate.
If I’m wrong, believe me folks let me here it here and I own it (AV…ended up being a horrible coach), but I’m rarely wrong about hockey things so it rarely happens.
Jpp
You need to reel in your combativeness. No shame in not being right a lot with your opinions, it’s just an opinion.
TRUTH
James
I don’t see Martinez being a fit here financially or as a player. I find the links odd as well.
Deangelo, while offencively talented is not good in his zone at all and seems to be a locker room issue.
The locker room thing might change but on the ice he’s going to continue to be a diversion of Chytil. Not a bad player but a player not really suited for what the team needs but can succeed in the right situation.
Deangelo is not the end all, and I’d rather see his cap $$$$ used elsewhere.
bobby, there is only one option with Tony, buyout. Let’s all move on from him as the Rangers will do as soon as they are able
Ilb
Was the servalli report yesterday not an indicator of the path forward? Or do you think servalli is not accurate?
Soooooo should they break up the Trouba-Miller pairing orrrrrrrr? lol
Whether or not you agree with his play or politics, there’s not only a wasted asset in ADA, but likely dead cap space (again) for a team that has used that tactic way too much the last decade. Even trading him for a 7th would have been better than that.
There is only one option with Tony because the idiots in charge mismanaged an asset —we can all move on but those are facts
Troobuh sux.
If you associate with Tony Soprano and you don’t care whether he likes you or not, only a matter of time until Tony brings the hammer down on your arrogant gourd.
Wicky, his report was accurate.
I never defended the asset management side of things just for the record. He and Georgiev both signed deals that I felt were a bit too generous for a third pair D man and a back up goalie.
There’s been a pretty steady trail of questionable asset management during JGs tenure.
Yanni Gourd?!
you were only trading him by retaining significant portion of his cap or taking back bad salary. Buyout is a negligible cap hit this year and next. Truly don’t get the hangup on this guy
Tony D defensively > Troobuh
Facts.
Ilb
I thought so too, was a boy thrown off by your 10:11. Thought maybe you had different thoughts than a buyout.
I don’t think anyone here is or has said that Deangelo as an asset hasn’t been totally mismanaged by the hedgehog and there aren’t really a lot of options left for drury with him.
His on ice and locker room value to this organization can certainly be debated though.

Line combos?
Might be what it takes…maybe d pairs since this post is all about d
Ryan Murray-Trouba
Lindgren-Fox
Miller-Savard
!!!
LAF-Eichel-Kakko
Panarin-Barron-Kravtsov
Kreider-Getzlaf-Gauthier
Goodrow-Rooney-Ritchie
Miller Trouba
Lindgren fox
Smith Johnson bitteto Jones hajek
To….
Miller Trouba
Lindgren fox
Chara Schneider
Or
Chara Trouba
Lindgren fox
Miller zadorov
Anyone’s blood boil with any of that?
Shoulda been in on Zado last summer.
I don’t know why I always forget that Chara is a lefty.
My lineups above= avg weight 205.21 Wick LOL
James
Beefy
I just liked every post for today in a sign of solidarity. And because I’m bored.
Wicky said all about D.
I liked no one’s posts because I don’t want to make others feel bad.
I hate everyone
He Hate Me
Remember that jersey?
Louie Anderson to his Mom: “I hate everyone!”
“We don’t hate in this family, Louie.”
“What about Dad? He says he hates everyone.”
” Dad is different, Louie.”
I’m not seeeing Howden in any of these line combos
Bobbyo
Or Chytil or Meeka or strome or Blackwell or DiG
20/20 vision, Bobby. Congrats! lol
I eliminated Chytil Howden Blackwell Strome and Zibanejad added 3 FAs and Eichel. My thought was Eichel for Chytil, Zibanejad and 15th OA. Howden or Blackwell claimed by Seattle and the other being packaged with Strome for depth/a later pick in the 2nd round of this year’s draft.
Uh oh James…you’ll get the Meeka nmc folks coming out of the woodwork lol
Goodrow and Ritchie are modest contracts. Getzlaf probably comes in around 3-4 provided he’s willing to go to NY. Eichel and his 10 million come on board and Barron gets promoted internally and deployed between two skilled players that can open up some room for him out there.
He can use that to prevent the trade. He can get stripped of his A as well. And he can play 3rd line RW minutes for the season….if he wants to play that game so can the organization
I just looked at the Montana weather forecast. Bonehead warning: Wicky is going to be verygranky the next two weeks. If he doesn’t melt first lol
It’s funny, I actually thought we’d be having a much more in depth discussion about the defense, it’s future and the ceiling of Adam Fox today.
I am in favor of keeping Zibanejad, why you ask? Because he scores goals, everyone needs goals! However I am not for keeping him if there is Cotton Candy on his RW.
Lafreniere Mika (Tuch as an example)
Hoping that Barron is the forward version of Ryan Graves that Gorton (thankfully) never got around to trading away for the forward version of Chris Bigras.
Ranger team mate congratulatory video to Foxy included Howden …no Blackwell or Gauthier …….we may have to just get used to him
James Mika is not going to Sabreville and any ‘demotion’ by mgt as a result would be transparent to the league and likely not affect his UFA status. The best shot at moving him (and getting something back) is at the deadline to a contending team willing to sign him long term if all parties are still on good terms. Don’t think that type of situation will be in play over the summer.
Ilb – If a player refuses to report what happens with their a) salary/bonus and b) cap hit?
Beezle
Agreed!
Guessing Getzlaf wants to get the hell out of California the question is why switch hell holes ?
Beezle-a team has their right to nullify his contract altogether.
I just made Fox a congratulatory video with my cell phone. Do I get to play for the team next year?! 🙂
Rangers just released a statement they’ve signed james to a contract for next season.
I’ve got no problem with that if James can win a face-off. Also, 3C needs to be at every game blowing that horn.
Wow Wicky the Rangers finally has someone who gets angry?
I know, this team needs someone that has a bad disposition. It the hedgehog was around, he’d trade him for a 4th rounder though 😉
I accidentally like my own post old age I guess!
St Pete
I liked your post saying you liked your own post!
Catching up from yesterday. I live in western Ny. I was in a locker room with an employee of the Sabres who knows the situation. I shared here the neck injury info about a month before it was made public.
He said Eichel was no longer captain of the team. Players resented what he was doing. He quit ok them and was selfish. The surgery crap is unproven over promise by some doc in florida which many other spine surgeons disagree with. I wanted Eichel when rumors first happened in beginning of year. The neck injury and his lack of sense of team is ten foot pole territory.
Huge moment in rangers history about Fox
YUGE! Couldn’t be happier about it.
Enjoy the moment.
fox won the Norris….that’s right.
Yay
Ok, I’m spent with all that celebrating;)
🤣
