With Kreider and cap space being the topic of conversations lately, I thought it would be cool to post this for the sake of conversation and for those that do not generally look too deeply at the cap figures.
Drury (and Gallant), seem to be coming in at the right time as far as cap management is concerned. The team is through the worst of the dead cap space and the worst of the ‘bad deals’ are gone now. They’ll have this summer to add some pieces either long or short term and then next summer will be the big one. The Strome and Zibanejad decisions will be made and Adam Fox will most likely get locked up long term. Those deals (or lack of deals) will have a big impact on which direction they’ll go in while this next window opens for a shot at the prize.

Don’t forget the French GP on Sunday, Wick.

Thank you sir…and go fast day tomorrow
👍
68k in the stands…social distancing what?!
20 minutes…come on let’s get this going!!!
Group of death day
Gotta love the officials in last nights game. Correy Perry takes a slash to the face, that in regular season is5 min penalty, game misconduct and suspension and no call. As much as I dislike the Habs; have to love the way they are playing. Price may just steal the series.
I do not care who is in the final’s as long as it not the Icelanders.
Can’t wait for off season to begin and the changes I hope are soon to follow.
LGR
Unreal
plenty of time left Wick, but a France loss would be great!
No Pete, it would not!
Fleury channeling Roy with the puck last night as well!
Gotta give Habs credit tho for making most of the breaks they’ve gotten (Tavares goes out, Schiefle goes out and now the vegas center, not at all as good, but Vegas is very weak at center suprisingly)
Haha!! Forza Azzurri!!
France are breathing again.
Need another!
Ooof
I’m still not sold on Benzema starting over the hammer, but we’ll see.
On to go fast day!
So.. if the Mtl somehow beat Vegas does that mean we should model NYR after Les Habs?
Group of death
Compare reaction of Vegas (Stone in particular) to Fleury brain cramp with D’Anger and Georgiev miscommunication.
Montreal would not be up 2-1 without Price in net?
Really interesting situation brewing in Minnesota with Kaprizov. Not ranger related.
Rules stipulate that the NHL clubs owns a European/Russian players rights until they come over to the NHL and sign a deal with the club that drafted them. In coming over this season and signing for only one year, it fulfilled that rule and means he’s eligible to become an NHL UFA at 27.
The one year deal gave him the power to bolt back to Russia and get paid crazy $ until he turns 27 and then he can put himself on the NHL free market and choose his team.
He could have played the Wild for fools and end up using them this one season for his best long term interests. We’re talking a guy who didn’t come over until 24. The wild had been trying to sign him for years.
He’s got Bill guerin by the BALLS
He potentially positioned himself and used signing with the wild this year as a longer ‘play’ to become an NHL UFA at 27 and be able to get paid Mucho $ in Russia doing it
Minx Price has been good, amazing what a goalie standing on his head at the right time can do? Though of goalies with at least 8 games in the playoffs does he really stand out?
Andrei Vasilevskiy .935
Carey Price .932
Connor Hellebuyck .931
Semyon Varlamov .923
Marc-Andre Fleury .921
I left out Raask who was next in line. But comparing to the regular season, Price and Hellebuyck elevated their games the most both on save % and gaa. The others were already there. Hope Igor and Georgie are paying attention.
Clarification.
It’s not all Europeans. It’s players drafted who play in the KHL
So for example Kravtsov yes. Nils no
Word has teams jumping in on eichel now that the combo his 1A-z team supposedly out (nyr) and the price undoubtedly coming down.
Word has it their after Hamilton or Jones and that Kirby dach may go in big trade.
I could totally see them trying to bring in eichel to make a one/two combo of Kane and eichel and go for it while Kane and Keith are still world class.
Toews money would have to go out somehow to bring in eichel and Hamilton or Jones.
I wonder if we could get involved for toews by having both the hawks and bluejackets absorb and retain salary.
Like Chicago retains part of the toews deal and sends him to Columbus as part of bigger Seth Jones deal, and Columbus retains some of the toews deal and passes him on to us in exchange for some of our assets JD loves.
and then Kirby dach being the main piece in an eichel deal
Makes sense that the Chicago ownership group wants to make the most $$ they can in the next couple seasons and are willing to mortgage a lot of the future they were building to do so.
It’s been a notoriously hot and cold fan base tickets wise. They don’t come out unless the team is winning.
would take Toews at a half his cap hit for sure, but not if the price is high at all. Rumblings that Jones wants Colorado so will only sign an extension if traded there. If that’s true, expect lesser return for him.
I’ve heard the Colorado angle too.
But not because of an extension. From what I heard, that’s where he wants to play next year and raise his value as much as possible while playing for a cup.
Beezle
Price is making the big saves at the right time in games. Let’s see if he can keep up?
I really believe Columbus’s best play to accelerate a restock and reflush is to retain salary on players and deal the next 2-3 years while growing the team and waiting on draft picks to season
Done right they could really add another handful of real assets and players for them and stock the organization with a ton of talent that will pop and be ready to take off all around the same time.
JD is there partially to help sell a step back from what the mission has been during the torts/jarmo/JD era was, getting into the playoffs and going to battle.
I think that’s a fan base that so long as the players and team continue to play hard to the level the fans have gotten used to and they have new emerging players to follow and watch. They will endure 2-3 seasons of non playoff hockey and be really happy what the next 3-5 years will be like.
Lots of ranger fans in a scared to trade guys who they think are bound for big things vibes going on.
Chytil
Nils
Lesser degree Jones
I feel it with Nils. I know it’s possible with chytil. Jones it wouldn’t shock me if he went somewhere else and became a really good fox-lite type player we wished we kept and didn’t toss him out bc of fox etc.
But I don’t know, it takes something to get something and that’s the nature of trading for immediate help.
Chytil I’m prepared to see him turn into a 40-50 pt player somewhere else.
Nils does give me the iffies. Like what If that guy just keeps ascending higher and higher and we give up a #1D, the real return in the Mcdonagh/Miller deal.
Jones I would like to sneak his way through this offseason and see how he progresses. Feels like a guy who’s stock could rise this year. He’s kind of a value stacker in a potential deal this summer, where in a season or season in a half, he could solidify himself as a legit everyday guy and have legit value himself
It’s like a double edged sword with chytil at this point. The closer he gets to realistically popping into his prime, the closer he is to needing a legit cap eating deal. Much like the buchnevich Situation.
Capri Sun is listed as a 10.2(c) and from CapFriendly FAQ:
What is a 10.2(c) player?
A player becomes a free agent when their contract expires on July 1 after the last League Year of their contract. A player who does not meet the UFA requirements or the Group 2 RFA requirements displayed in the table above, and has been issued a qualifying offer, is designated a 10.2(c) player. The player is only eligible to negotiate and sign a contract with the club that holds their signing rights. They are ineligible to negotiate a contract (offer sheet) with any other club. They are also ineligible for arbitration. If the player does not receive a qualifying offer by June 25th at 5:00pm ET, they immediately become a UFA.
It is not clear to me a) whether once a 10.2(c) he is legally able to negotiate with another club outside the NHL and b) that once a 10.2(c) they can run out the clock by not signing the qualifying offer and wait for age 27 normal UFA as it is unclear how long the team’s rights last.
If Jones wants to play in Colorado he won’t be getting a massive deal given players they have to pay in the near future and also don’t think he would be valued as highly by a Colorado team who has much greater needs than D.
Our Jones was essentially drafted to be traded so won’t lose any sleep when he is moved. Chytil likely will breakout at some point with the team willing to be patient and put him in a position to do so, which may not end being us. Nils you only move now for a no doubt 1C
Have to say I agree with everything you said there.
I trade nils for a tkachuk though.
If the upside to Chytil is 40-50 pts a season, he is expendable as I’m not aware of any intangibles he brings beyond pure scoring?
In the last full NHL season, 50 pts for a forward puts you right around #100. (#97-#142 capture 40-50pts by forwards). Looking at a combined 19/20+20/21 and prorating, 62-77 pts puts you right in the same group.
Granted, he is only 22 this coming season but 45 pts in the past 102 doesn’t really differentiate him from many other players. It is not unreasonable to expect him to step things up this season – he already has 186 games played – but the risk for the NYR is he does not and any speculative trade value plummets.
Additional perspective – of players the NHL lists as “active” – Chytil is #338 of 684 in regular season games played.
Other familiar names: Cirelli #313, Kapanen #299, DeBrusk #298, Barzal #270, Buch #260, Laine #222, Kreider #126, Strome #139, Mika #110, Bergeron #8, Ove #6.
Great stats beezle, nice work.
I wonder if a lot of the sabres “smoke” and interested teams etc aren’t necessarily about eichel and instead are about Reinhart?
Obviously eichel is a topic and available but I think there is some overlap or misdirection going on.
And also risto could be a player that is sought after and on the move.
All this chatter about Eichel has me a bit concerned. It is my humble but not inexperienced opinion (did I just contradict myself?) that bringing him here will be cost prohibitive in terms of what goes the other way…and he is the 10 million dollar man. That’s a lot of fishnagels. Furthermore his neck injury I think is going to be a major hindrance to his career. So….what I am saying is that for the Rangers such a move will be a disaster of mega proportions and set the organization back indefinitely.
Could be, Rich. Budding superstar, but IMHO, he’s not worth the gamble when there are others we crave and need.
Already on board as not wanting Eichel. Health risk, contract risk, cap hit, assets given up, uncertain leadership/desire/room stuff. If NYR are going to take on another huge contract want all the other parts to be green lights and not yellow or red.
Again and again I’m saying: Sam Reinhart would be my choice. Make sense in more ways than one, if it’s possible in general…
Eichel brings nothing to the Rangers that isn’t already here, (Mika Zibanejad), and for less of a cap hit. I’ll pass and I’m betting Drury will as well. I’d rather see the addition of Hyman, Coleman or Goodrow, and Danault with Gallant stirring the pot?
Depends what is going the other way. Eichel is a special player.
I agree Bdl but so is Mika.
Just my opinion….
Eichel isn’t a get I’d be looking for and I think you can have very good centre depth without having to have a bunch of top end centres. I’d be targeting other forwards and not necessarily all centres to improve the top 6…especially right wing.
I do however, think eichel is a better player than Zibanejad and strome. I think his 10 mil per make him not a lot better than strome (depending on strome contract) and depending on Meeka contract would determine how much better than him (I’m taking value into consideration as well as overall play NOT just points)
The price to acquire eichel is not prohibitive or concerning in the least to me…plenty of d prospects to give from as well as goalie and young nhl forwards.
The $10 mil is a bit bothersome IF they don’t plan on moving a couple other players at some point with decent cap hits.
The injury is the biggest concern to me IF it isn’t taken care of properly…ie the longer term solution that eichel wants. I’d speculate that any team that trades for him has that all resolved prior to.
I’d rather see the rangers acquire other players (right wingers for the top 6) and amend the centre position with less expensive and more overtly physical centres than Zibanejad or eichel, but I’d take eichel any day over Zibanejad.
Eichel is a better all around player than Zibanejad.
The dollars possibly make it less of a gap but if salaries are equal, eichel everyday.
Buffalo is a dumpster fire to the nth degree and there will be players that leave there, including eichel, that will discover a new lease on career life when they are out of there.
There’s not a single person on this blog or anywhere in the hockey world that doesn’t believe a change of scenery won’t make a difference nor is there anyone here that knows what goes on in that room and organization vs what is said ahem…leaked for common knowledge.
Wicky
Everything you said I agree with and it was a large part of my thinking in my 4:00 post. Too many what if’s with Jack E. and too big a cap hit. Mika just may score 50 this coming season and with Lafreniere and some snarl protection on the RW that line could be a major improvement?
If the Rangers drafted Eichel….different story altogether.
In Buffalo too much has happened to that kid…he may need more than a change of scenery….he may need a psychologist.
If his neck is ok, and maybe thats a big if (not a medical doc, juris only), Eichel actually won’t at all be overpaid going forward. Kid had 82 pts as a 22yr old and then 78 the next year on an aptly described dumpster fire of a team. Again health pending he will be a 90-100pt player on a good team in short order. Now doesn’t mean i empty the system for him, but if the medical team gave the green light id have no issue paying a fair price and happily have him as our 1C for the next 5 seasons.
Beezle, i don’t think Chytil tops out as a 40-50pt guy. This year alone he put up 22 even strength pts in 42 games on 3rd line minutes and almost no pp time. Give him strong linemates (say kreider and Krav), more even strength minutes and regular pp time and he could become a 50-60pt guy me thinks in season or two and potentially more. Now i get it that doesn’t work if your top centers remain Mika and Strome, but if a Danault type was your 2C and say Mika or Eichel is the 1C, no reason the rangers could have a 3rd line like that (which Habs essentially have right now)
Issue with Mika is the prospect of a 7yr deal starting at age 29 and a troubling concussion history.
St Pete, unfortunately don’t see Habs letting Danault go after this run and if he is leaving the cost is likely one you regret in 3 yrs given his offensive limitations.
Be interesting to see what it will take to sign Coleman (be 29 in Nov, current cap hit of $1.8m) or Goodrow (28, current cap hit of $925k). Coming off a Cup win those guys tend to get overpriced, but if you could keep the term to 4yrs, be worth to give Coleman say something in the $3ms. I wouldn’t go as high for Goodrow
Pete
Correct re eichel and correct re Mika.
I have no interest in moving forward with Meeka whether eichel or another ce tre is here or not.
He seems much more part of the problem than the solution IMO.
I like Coleman and goodrow a lot but I believe they are both wingers on a line with gourde at centre.
They can both take draws and I like their style of play, the question to me is can either play 2nd line RW?
I also think to keep the cap reasonable they need to find a guy like goodrow and what he currently makes going forward.
Marchment has been that guy to me for quite a while. I don’t think cuyle is ready yet and he’s the logical Kreider replacement at some point.
Fwiw, I have not been overly impressed with goodrow in scrums vs Martin.
agree best approach is find the next goodrow as opposed to overpaying for him as a UFA.
Coleman may not be quite good enough offensively to be on the 2nd line, Palmieri slightly better fit on that front, but wouldn’t be eager to overpay there. I think Kakko and Kreider or kravtsov are our top 6 right wingers this coming season and going forward barring trades.
That may be, personally I think that’s a bad mix
Let’s hope Gallant holds the key to unleash Kreider’s inner-(pre-Carey Price collision)-beast.
Tomk
Truth!
Tomk….I miss the Kreider who could throw guys around like rag dolls.
Bolts scores early and you can hear a pin drop.
Does it happen?
Tampa better get their head out of their azz soon…
Squirrelly Cooper better get his troops together.
Enough of the skating in Fishsticks mud.
I just turned on the game….it’s a nightmare.
Tampa. Becoming more and more useless.
Tyler Johnson looked like he was woken up to go to the penalty box. He looked like he was nodding off in the box
Tampa looks like crap. Good the first 10 minutes and then horrid since.
Jon Cooper SUX
2-2 after 2 nothing new!
This is going to go the same way as the last two series. Lightning will dominate game 5 but Isles will get a lucky win and whoop them in front of the greatest fans in the history of sports (sarcasm) in game 6. Isles will them beat the Habs in 2 games. Not a typo. 2 (two) games. The Habs will forfeit the series after literally pooping themselves from being intimidated from the isles 4th line and the “Barn.”
Uh Oh!
Tampa is at least back in it. They need to play more than a 20 minute game.
Tampa really sucks here.
B.S. call. Clutterbuck dive.
Why TF do the coaches wear masks?
Refs playing God again. Way-to-go Bettman.
2-2 after 4.
Did he not close the puck with glove in the crease? 🤔
The NHL has an officiating problem. And Bettman clearly does not know what to do about it.
Bettman doesn’t want to do anything…his team(s) is going to the finals.
Arizona is going to the finals? How?
And I thought the nhl no longer owned the yotes?!
Brooks besides himself this morning at the “miracle play”.
Gimme a break.

Happy Father’s Day to all you boneheads and readers out there
Happy Father’s Day to all current, future and past dads.
Admiral have to remember Brooksie is trying to sell papers in New York…not his fault some of them are Icelander fans. I still think something escaped from Plum Island, only rational explanation for anyone picking the fishies over NYR!
Someone brought up the idea of Kreider to Boston for Coyle+.
Reasons
Gorts loved him, was gorts first pick as director of player personnel. JD loved him. Both aren’t here anymore
We landed the #1 and laffy was by far the best player and we had to take him.
Situation has changed here for kreider bc of that.
Boston has wanted kreider. Kreider has wanted to go home in the past. Coyle has a limited 10 team NTC so he would be easier for us to flip if that became the play.
I think it’s realistic
https://nypost.com/2021/06/19/table-seekers-offer-big-bribes-to-get-into-hamptons-restaurants/
Wow.. a friend’s family had a small place in Westhamptom and he’d get it for two weeks in the summer and the Giants crew would go out for all or part back in the 90s. I thought it was disgusting then the further east you went but clearly off the charts bad now. How does CCCP manage to deal with these people!?!
There’s talk lauzon and Frederic could be exposed to Seattle.
I don’t think a Kreider move happens so soon, but a Coyle, Frederic, lauzon for Kreider trade is an interesting concept.
Let’s say all 3 guys are guys they are potentially thinking about exposing. If they could get Kreider in and protect him in exchange for 3 guys they are preparing to loss. That might be sound expansion draft roster management for the Bs
Do we really need anymore young forwards or defense? Not sure what problem Coyle really solves that can’t be done cheaper. Kreider has made NYC his home now as well, don’t see him waiving his NMC to be closer to family and friends he is likely to only really see in the off-season. He can afford a second home and live there in the summer now if he wants to, right?
Jpp2.0
I had mentioned Kreider to Boston a few times, but I have reconsidered. The bees window might be closing fast. I’m certain Kreider is aware of it.
Happy Father’s Day to all you chucklefaces!!! 😘
Wow, what a race.
EddieJ, it’s a great one.
St Pete broke the blog again!!
Vegas baby!!!
Still love that Roy kid!!
Why did Krieder make a deal with the Rangers if he wanted to go to the Bruins? He could have waited to last Summer and gone there.
ORF
Good call on Kreider

Kirby Dach +, is equal to what from the Rangers for Eichel?
