I was preparing the Go Time Post yesterday and thought to myself- how are they supposed to compete when there are too many borderline NHLers and pure AHLers in the lineup? And that was before they announced Miller news.
The answer is, you can’t. There are some good stories here and there, but there is a reason why players play in big leagues, and why others become journeymen at best.

Agree with Minx. They’re 6 points back of Pitt and Philly. By the time they have their starting roster back on the ice there will be about 20 games left and that’s if all goes well. Not impossible but not likely unless there’s some kind of dramatic turn around not just for them but for one of the two teams from PA.

If Boston, philly, wash, Pitt or isles won most of their games with buffalo and jersey, ns make it really hard to reach the pt numbers I will take to be in the top 4

That’s my initial thought when I saw the schedule Before the season started is we are most likely Lotto bound bc we have 5 playoff teams in our division.
So I was bracing for this from the get go. I didn’t assume we’d have the type of off ice issues we’ve had or that Mika would be ice cold.

making playoffs will be tough and will hinge on Zibanajad performance… not sure either Philly or Washington is a lock for top 4 …Washginton looks old and slow and Philly defense/goaltending hasnt been great …. It’s easy to say trade him, no one will argue if it’s part of the plan to make the team better. Same way they were right to trade Stepan. But it can’t be just because, or he’s not the ideal 1C. I listed UFA centers. None of them are better, or even will be good value, or their age is a limitation (Getzlaf, Krejci, etc.). That means you need to trade for another C, which means you’re giving up wings or D prospects.
I have thoughts on why GM’s are avoiding D’Angelo but I will keep it off the blog. Having said that I believe you all know the reason.
There is no way in HELL I am signing Mika after this.
He would need to go on a tear from now until next April

I know we don’t have time on our side, but JD does. He is relatively new and has continually spoke the ‘long road’ as the path to cup contention. Could see them sitting idle as expansion and covid prevents moves. Butch would be first to go IMHO.

There are not a list of two way centers because everyone wants them. Need to find the 3C being blocked like Mika was or a younger alternative in the minors.

GMs lose their jobs and have a hard time getting hired after letting a Mika talent type get blocked on your team, traded, and popping for another team.
The Mika trade wasn’t a strictly a hockey deal in any way. Melnyk didn’t want to pay Mika for his Inconsistencies, watched the hometown kid brassard have some big playoff moments for the rangers a 1a/b and brassard had a contract structure where the rangers paid a hefty bonus out before trading him to Ottawa so the real dollars brassard cost Ottawa and melnyk was the real reason that trade happened

Gravy, I understand where BDL is coming from but at the end of the day I don’t think the player profile he’s describing is something they can acquire. Take a look at players who score around 50-60 points and play center full time while also posessing the qualities that Zibanejad isn’t known for.
How many guys do you come up with? And how many of them are going to be available any time soon? Three guys come to mind from the last 2-3 years. O’Reilly, Kadri and Trocheck. That’s it.
You’re not trading for someone like Toews. And you aren’t pulling an up and coming star that a team is happy with over to your team (Larkin, Horvat, Coutourier).
Can’t find those guys as easy as we can describe them…

I’m exaggerating of course. Messier is one of the best all-time, from a different era. We haven’t had an opportunity to draft a generational, gritty center, but we still needed to draft more centers with the picks we had.
The NHL was a different league back in those days but even the Messier teams had some guys that weren’t what you’d consider “tough to play against”. Luc Robitaile, Kovalev, Zubov, Nedved, Noonan, Amonte all played for the team at various times before during and after the Championship and contributed to success at times.
Really the 94 team they iced for the playoffs and the OG Black and Blueshirt Rangers from the Torts era may have been the 2 toughest constructed rosters in the last 30 years. And the Black and Blue shirts didn’t succeed because while they were tough to play against, they lacked fire power..

Wanted to articulate alittle on no chance in HELL I’d resign Mika after this
1. I’m assuming he’s looking that big ticket top 10 center contract 9-10per long term. With NMC
2. Track record of inconsistencies and huge difference between the player he is when his off season training is done right as opposed to not done nearly enough. Even if he has a good season next year, it doesn’t guarantee he’s given put in the off season work every summer to ensure we don’t see sloppy not confident bc he knows he’s not in his peak shape Mika, compared to elite level Mika.
I’m sick of watching our guys eventually handcuff us with their deals bc of offseason prep. I’ve never Been in a gym save to take a shower In 20 years, but I also didn’t don’t opportunity to play NHL for a living and make dumb loot
If his struggles and track record and acceptance of yes I’ve been an up and down player, lead him to a resurgence next year and he’s willing to sign at 2nd line center money and limited clauses (abeit higher end 2C money 6.5-7m) Maybe there’s a path for him to re-sign
But almost more important than the salary cap hit, there’s not a chance in HELL im locking myself into a NMC deal with the inconsistencies
