Rangers-1, Carolina-4

Good morning, boneheads!

A little perspective, boys and girls.

When they played their last game of regular season on March 11 we had no idea what to expect next. And then the entire world was turned upside down. Our lives were put on hold. Denial, anxiety, fear. We spent the next few months trying to save as many lives as we could, and trying to figure out what is next for our existence. Hockey was not what we had in mind. Considering all this, what we are witnessing is a bonus and a well deserved and needed distraction.

What we are witnessing is a bonus for us, the fans. It’s been too many months since we saw this team, and I think we forgot how young and inexperienced they are. All over the lineup and behind the bench. We forgot what steps they took to continue this rebuild. This also was a bonus for them. They got a taste of it. They know how it feels. They may still do not know what it takes, but it’s a step.

I have no desire to blame anyone for this quick exit, I’ll leave it up to the media and Twitter. They are going in the right direction. They are set in goal. They have at least 3-4 players on defense to build on. They have top offensive players that can challenge the league in scoring. They have a few young and very promising players in the lineup already playing important minutes. And more coming up in the system. The are well positioned to draft more. They know what they need, and what they do not need at this point. This team is going to be very, very good. And soon.

The only question left to answer is what will happen to hockey. It’s a million dollar question that we have no answer. Nobody does. But I’ll tell you what, I’d give a credit to this league and its players for being able to pull this off so far. Especially considering what has been happening with other major sports. So I trust they will be able to continue playing the sport we all love and make it as close to normal as possible.

As far as this blog. We are here. We will continue to talk hockey, and we will have Go Time posts throughout the playoffs. And for some other occasions. And continue to rely on Carp and his great work.

Speaking of Carp. He is still sleeping. I’ll post his article whenever it appears on the Athletic site.

UPDATE: I was looking for Carp’s game review and found this article instead. They do have an excellent stuff there.

If HL does not retire (ie, by playing for Sweden) the team must buy him out. They need to cap room and his is the best possible move. The 1.5 that would be left two years from now is not big concern as there is only 2.5 dead there now.

They are stuck with Staal as 6 or 7, he won’t retire and he won’t waive his NMC. As to Smith, I actually think you might be able to move him once we pay his 1M signing bonus, though per the contract there would only be 10 teams. Burying his contract only saves you 1M.

They should put a Wig of perfect hair in the MSG rafters for Hank

I would buy Hank out as well if he doesn’t retire. That money goes to re-sign Georgiev. And agree, $1.5M in 21-22 is nothing to worry about, considering what comes off their cap. But I would not use any assets to get rid of either Staal or Smith. Retained salary? Sure. But no assets.

    Just putting it out there.
Hank, as of today, already made over $98M. He is owed $5.5M next season including $1M bonus. Buyout gives him $2.5M this season and $1.5M next.

Let me rephrase it. NY paid him already over $98M. He made more, he was also playing in Sweden

Beezle – Smith in minors saves maybe a couple of hundred thousand. because if not him somebody will be on roster.

Stepan is such a smart player.

I know people would say he’s too slow and let the past be the past, but I think stepan would score 30g and hit 80Pts playing next to panarin

Big fan of the Step! Get why they made the move from a cap perspective, but was still sad to see him go

Kirby Dach is better than Hughes and Kakko.

  29. James G Avatar

Kirby Dach was very overlooked as far as hype thanks to the Hughes-Kakko hype.
I don’t know that he will have the better stats but he’s going to be a star in this league and a rare “complete player” in the modern day nhl.

It’s a bit of a caveat for the Rangers. They need a Dach or a Byfield. They may need two of them in fact..but the centers aren’t the “best players available” for them When they’re on the clock..

I thought when Pittsburgh got Lemieux the fix was in,Next came Sidney. Knowing the NHL I get almost assure you they will get the no. 1 pick this year. A lot of talk about buying out Stall and Henry; I am with the group that says keep them and let them sit. We will be at least two to three years before we are a contender. We have to stop paying players who are no longer with us.

Last year I figured they’d have a good chance at Newhook or Krebs with the Winnipeg pick that went back to them in the Trouba deal.
Both those guys were off the board a couple of selections before the Jets picked so they would have missed out anyhow

  33. James G Avatar
    James G

I didn’t think it was rigged. I just think Pittsburgh deliberately tanked and got themselves in position not just for Crosby but Malkin and Staal and Fleury…

It’s well documented by now that those drafts didn’t have to suck for the rangers but they made it suck

  34. Bdl Avatar

If two players are close, you always take the center.

  35. James G Avatar
    James G

BDL are you suggesting the Rangers should have taken Dach over Kakko?

Or that they should take Byfield if they were to have Pittsburgh’s first overall pick this year?
