Good morning, boneheads!
I am here even though I don’t comment much. I am getting busy again at work, but in a good way. I read the blog almost all the time. In general, I think, it’s a pretty good discussion. Especially if you consider there is not much hockey going on. I think it’s a pretty civil, thoughtful “back and forth” with people realizing there are different views, and we can respectfully disagree. Respectfully being an operative word. It still gets personal more often than it should. That won’t be allowed.
As far as hockey news. I found this article about possibly moving hockey seasons to different dates altogether interesting. I am a hockey purist, that won’t make me happy. I am sure BDL would be livid too.

To clarify, an officer or multiple officers kneeling on an unarmed white man’s neck and back for 9 minutes while being recorded. You won’t find it. It doesn’t exist.

Again I’m going to draw from personal experience. About 40 years ago, I moved into a neighborhood that would be politely called a slum. I was still working for a bank and in case you don’t know, banks don’t pay middle management well. Anyway, I moved into a building that was mostly Hispanic and black. Over the years I was there (I’m by nature a fairly sedentary type), I saw a lot of people move in and out. A black couple took the apartment next to mine and I became friendly with them. To make the story short, the woman died of cancer (couldn’t have been more than 30 but no health insurance back then…) and her husband kind of fell apart. A totally unassuming kind of guy, not tall, not hefty just ordinary. Well he lost the apartment and the neighborhood kind of took care of him (he described himself as a lay preacher). (There was this elderly black lady who was ‘mayor’ of the block and she kept things in hand at all times). So he started showing up outside my building once in a while and I’d give him a few bucks (my contribution).
One day, I’m walking out of my building early in the morning headed off to work and I hear ‘John, John help’. Not my name but what he always called me. I looked across the street and there was a plain clothes cop holding him face first against the window of an unmarked car with a dog inches from his face barking at him (window closed). He hadn’t been doing anything, just waiting for me to come outside. Do you think any cop would have treated a white man like that. I went over and explained the situation, I had no problem doing that because I was a white guy even if I was in a black/hispanic neighborhood and I was dressed in tie and jacket. I wonder what might have happened to him and me if I were black.
Norm
Ah, got it…murderer for sure, racist…TBD (perhaps).
Aneirin
Thanks for the story. Not sure why you decided to share with me specifically, but thanks.
FWIW, it’s possible the cop would have done the same to anyone but I don’t know what prompted the face planting or anything other than the optics involved that you provided.
Mister D, you will probably find one video of an officer or multiple officers kneeling on an unarmed man’s neck and back for 9 minutes while being recorded. It’s an anomaly, which is what makes it so riveting and incendiary.
There was a hopeful sign that at least some policemen pay attention to the news, from a few days ago out here in Seattle:
Mister D, there is always the presumption of innocence, legally at any rate. Chauvin is clearly not innocent of contributing to the death of Floyd at the very least, even if it’s shown in court that he stroked out under extreme duress, drugs in his system, etc. Chauvin is innocent of racism, though, until proven otherwise. This concept is not difficult even if the passions of the moment demand otherwise, and has nothing to do with blaming the victim, who everybody in the country agrees did not deserve his death. In the Arbery murder, there is evidence, compelling or otherwise, TBD, that one of his killers yelled a racial epithet. Black man kills white man, white man kills black man… the murder is not inherently racist in either case unless there’s evidence of it.
I dont think there are many people out there naive enough to believe that bigots and racists don’t exist, sadly they do, they have, and always will. Some people just suck.
The ideas of discourse, improvement, and resolution becomes impossible when the knee jerk happens so far off to one side that anyone with a calm, rational voice and opinion , is throw into a category with (in this particular case) racists etc because they are being rational and logical….and let’s not confuse rational and logical with condoning and accepting because they are NOT the same thing.
That is a reasonable post.
“In the end the lessons for both sides are make better life choices and friend choices and don’t resist it don’t chemically induce your body to a point you can’t control yourself…”
If your daughter ever gets sexually assaulted, are you going to say that your daughter should have lived a better life or made better friends, or that she shouldn’t get too drunk that she can’t control herself?
My kids are all reminded constantly to not put themselves into situations they can’t get out of.
Everything bad that happens to people isn’t racially motivated and a lot of it, imho, has to do with poor decisions that escalate into bad situations and results that could have been avoided had the initial poor decision not been made. Again, punishment in no way, shape, or form equals the crime in some cases.
To your specific point, sexual assault is a horrible thing for anyone to endure, no one ever deserves that (just like no one deserves to be discriminated against based on appearance etc). A sexual assaulter is a crap human but the assaulter, whether it is a male or female, doesn’t represent their whole gender, nor (as an example) if they are a grocery clerk, do they represent all grocery clerks.
To take this a step further, even if “statistics” showed that female grocery clerks were the highest percent of any group of sexual assaulter it still doesn’t make all female grocery clerks sexual assaulter or bad humans.
Sadly, with sexual assault or any other horrible act where there is a victim involved, it only takes one mistake for it to happen.
And mr D, this is a misquote from me in your 9:00 post “should have lived a better life” I never said that, it’s not it my post you reposted.
My kids should know better than to get so drunk or whatever to put themselves in a situation they shouldn’t, they should know how to pick good people with good character as friends etc…if they do not, that is a failure on me and my wife as parents to prepare them for real world situations and the reality of how some people are.
Mr. D, lets keep our family members out of this, please. Especially the kids. There is a better way to make your point.
interesting article Beezle
my leading theories on how I got it are the Rangers vs Stl game, or Boston market where I frequently got food to take out. In Boston market I was usually the only white person on line and the virus has hit more minorities.
did 3 miles walk today (1.5 times two with half hour in between).
I’m very grateful to be able to do that.
Speaking of preparing children for the real world, here’s a tape of an arrested looter who combines honesty and ignorance in a way that’s painful to watch. This kind of thing lies at the heart of the problem, the idea that an American citizen such as he can be brought this low. Or never elevated perhaps, who knows:
https://www.foxla.com/news/looter-explains-his-motive-after-being-caught-by-police?fbclid=IwAR2UvSgvDMiAdUCfHZEeP-8mPSvi8bfOLbY_78jEAQ8unXTPRgH46_EY8b4
Your example is a false equivalence. I’ll get to that in one moment. There is a difference between systemic and institutionalized racism and individual racism. In 2016, blacks accounted for 13% of the population and 27% of the prison population. There are plenty more examples I can show that support this point. This shows that law enforcement are investigating, arresting and looking to prosecute African Americans more than other races. Unless you believe that blacks commit more crimes than other races or are genetically inclined to commit more crime than other races.
When Chauvin puts his knee on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes, we don’t necessarily have the evidence that he is a racist. And we may never have proof of individual racism unless Chauvin comes out and says he’s a racist. But that’s what the profession of law enforcement attracts, a law enforcement official who was comfortable with his knee on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes without fear of consequence.
In your example, the similar concept would be if the institution of grocery stores had a policy that attracted sexual assaulters. Such as the grocery store provided elite, pro bono legal service to all accused sexual assaulters. Then it becomes about the culture that the institution of grocery stores has cultivated and not about the individual.
As to the hypothetical scenario I proposed, you can prepare your children, son or daughter, the best any parent could, and all it takes is one visit to a bar and a bartender to slip a roofie in a patron’s drink. Can literally happen to anyone. It doesn’t matter if a woman is a nun or an escort, there is no place for
victim blaming the victim of sexual assault.
Yes, ilb. I should have known better.
Mister D, I’ll butt out mostly–your post is for Wick–but I will say that I do believe that blacks commit more crimes (per) than other races in this country and that it’s not due to any genetic difference. Would love to be proven wrong on that one.
Mister D
Just like with many other things in this world that statistics are linked to, stats are an information tool but do not tell the whole story. Since you don’t know me and have no idea what I’ve seen or know regarding the race issue, let’s just leave it at racism is bad and so are extremist views on it because there is plenty of blame to go around.
I accept your apology for bringing my kids into this and please do not do it again.
I also believe norm is correct re the number of crimes and he is certainly correct in no one is genetically predisposed to commit crimes.
My local newspaper had a great project that details the “Bias on the Bench” in Florida.
http://projects.heraldtribune.com/bias/sentencing/
You didn’t respond to my correction of your false equivalency. And my fact that anyone can be sexually assaulted, no matter preparedness. So I take it that you agree with me. Thank you for agreeing with me.
“Since you don’t know me and have no idea what I’ve seen or know regarding the race issue, let’s just leave it at racism is bad and so are extremist views on it because there is plenty of blame to go around.”
While condemning Chauvin’s actions, you victim blamed George Floyd. I know that.
Lol, you’re ridiculous.
And out of line.
How can we try to understand the nature or circumstances of a crime if we are not allowed to examine the actions and motivations of the victim for fear of “victim shaming”?
Just scanned this thread looking for anyone saying it’s Floyd’s fault he’s dead… Nope, nothing.
Floyd should never have been made to suffer and die as he did.
But — hopefully Floyd’s death is not in vain as it allows us all to open up examination and discourse on the nature of race in America, and the rest of the world.
Admiral
Correct and rational. It’s clear by all accounts that the group mr Floyd was with was not law abiding and innocent. His untimely demise was by no means justified and certainly a tragedy, and similar to the Ferguson incident the punishment (and end result)in no way shape or form fit the crime.
Also, it cannot nor should not be overlooked that had whatever law infraction not occurred in either case then it is much more likely the police do not become involved.
As stated, plenty wrong on all sides with the end result being the most tragic and murderous if consequence.
You’re looking on the wrong thread.
“In the end the lessons for both sides are make better life choices and friend choices and don’t resist it don’t chemically induce your body to a point you can’t control yourself…”
Classic victim blaming.
What lessons should blacks learn from the murder of Ahmaud Arbery?
Not mr Floyd nor the gentleman’s fault in Ferguson they are dead, simply saying things should have been done and actions taken to not get them to either situation they ended up in….and those actions that should have been taken cast a wide swath over the victims, perpetrators, society as a whole, urban communities, policing, and government.
Plenty of blame to go around, not just on “whites and the police”.
Anyone watched space force yet?
Yes. A few funny moments but a lot of lame moments. Disappointing given the cast. Through 4 episodes.
Mister D, I read that sentence, and how that is victim blaming, classic or otherwise, is beyond me. Floyd took actions leading to his arrest—that does not make him responsible for his own death. He may or may not have resisted arrest (after the leading-away video, before the murder video)—that does not make him responsible for his own death. The cops are responsible for his death. This is what we refer to as “nuance”.
Loved the entirety of Space Force. It’s over-the-top and fast-paced.
Norm, this murder offers no lesson to be learned for unarmed black arrestees or unarmed arrestees of any color (if you’re so inclined to not believe this is systemic racism on display). Suggesting that any unarmed person of any color in the same exact situation should learn a lesson from the death of George Floyd and fear being restrained and knelt on for nine minutes the way George Floyd was is ridiculous.
I am not brainwashed by commies like most of you so I get to live with pride and self respect. When y’all are ready to leave the abusive relationship with leftism, holla at me.
Loving yourself > being brainwashed
TYM and Norm
Thanks guys for the space force update, I’ll have to check it out.
And since wicky didn’t want to type his name and give his name recognition, the name of the man in Ferguson is Michael Brown.
Michael Brown.
Michael Brown.
Lol, grow up mr D. I mentioned earlier I couldn’t remember his name and since you didn’t toss it out there right away, you finally looked it up since you didn’t remember either.
Nice work with google 👍
Can we talk hockey now?
I think mini camp opens tomorrow for the Rangers. Fishsticks camp opens today.
