Rangers-1, Blues-3

Good morning, boneheads!

First of all, speedy recovery to our long time friend 4ever. Get well soon, and we will pray for you.

As for the game. They lost a playoff style game to a legit, ready to repeat, contender on a bad bounce. Sometimes it is what it is.

Listen, they got worse after the deadline. We get it. Di Giuseppe isn’t going to replace Kreider. Smith isn’t replacing Skjei, though he is trying. And Georgiev isn’t going to replace Shesterkin, it looks. Someone has to step in. They almost did last night. Third line drew a penalty, Buchnevich ( who’s been much better last two games ) wins his battle, and the big boys do their job. But it’s time for this third line to score a few here and there.

Loved Lindgren’s game. His stick popping hit interrupted a possible scoring chance. Trouba was solid. In general, the defense was good. They lost on a bad bounce, the one Georgiev should have had.

They didn’t lose any ground, and, without a doubt, this was a great experience for a young team. Playoff game, referees swallowed their whistles, no flow. Tough for a young team whose players thrive on transition. Plenty of positives. Except they need points at the moment. They need their youngsters to start scoring.

    4Ever speedy recovery!

Same to NYR. Ilb is right, need more out of the third line. No video last night so didn’t see the GWG, unfortunate as it sounded on radio like Georgie played a very good night otherwise.

Radio commentary was that NYR just do not get bodies to the front for rebounds. Even before THE went out that was the case, with some occasional exceptions to Fast and Strome.

3 losses. 6 goals scored. Zibanejad has half of them.
If no one is going to step up then the draft will be the only thing we have to look forward to this spring.

Love you – this totally boneheaded, yet sensitive, slightly crazy, but wonderful, blog’s community. To be part of it is a huge, supportive bonus for the love of game and our Rangers. I watched howden his draft year. For once I agreed with the player comparable that many talking heads used, Toews.

I really thought he was a Toews light player and looked the part.

He’s dropped off this year on the ice but has picked it up recently (had a great hit along the boards last night that forced a turnover). It’d be nice if he figures it out.

Chytil is what he is, and will look great for a few games then just vanish for a bit. I’m going to be curious to see how he plays in these playoff style games like last night, which he wasn’t noticeable.

His play this year makes me think long term 3C not 2C, but as with howden he’s still really young so plenty of time. It just makes it tricky when discussing potential lineups next season…especially regarding howden.

Chytil only can score off the rush …no down low game yet…Kakko just can’t score …lack of speed eliminates opportunities off the rush…he has a down low game but hasnt leaned that he’s not going to stickhandle around NHL defensemen and that he needs to shoot the damn puck ….both still young but they need to start improving

  24. bobbyo2019 Avatar

bobbyO – I’m not going to post a ton of links here. Go search on NHL goalie trades and see what comes back. A first rounder is extremely rare and only has great names attached. Even second rounders are few and far between (and almost always involve other pieces).

The Talbot trade, perhaps one exception, was a swap of 7ths and NYR got a very low 2nd and mid 3rd. At the time Talbot came off a stellar season ( .931 and 2.00 gaa) replacing the injured HL, not just backing him up. Talbot also had a year left on his deal (0.6M). Edmonton saw him as their immediate starter. We eventually traded that 2nd for a high 3rd and 4th rounder. Ironically, the 7th is Huska.

I’m sure Gorton listens to all offers on all players. If someone offered him a 1st, or even a mid 2nd or above I think it likely he would have moved Georgie.

  29. James G Avatar
    James G

    E3,
JUST Matthews, Marner and Nylander? I think you’re grossly underestimating Georgiev’s trade value. DO NOT let the last 25 years of goalie trades fool you. We should be getting Tavares and Reilly too!

  31. Beezle Avatar

Minx – you knew that, I knew that, so did some others. Unfortunately, too many fans want/expect instant greatness out of the box from those kids. NYR chose to play them at the NHL level rather than AHL; there is certainly an honest debate on the wisdom of doing that.

  32. bobbyo2019 Avatar
    bobbyo2019

Talbot was 3 years older and coming from a top NHL team …..there was belief that Sather could have/should have gotten more especially here……we’ll just have to disagree on Georgie’s trade value….there’s nothing wrong with that by the way

You are all correct about these young kids. But this team wasn’t going to contend this year, they gave them an opportunity to play at the highest level. And guess what, even if they don’t make playoffs, judging by the last 2 month, they did just fine. And regardless of the outcome, this still was/is a great season.

  37. bobbyo2019 Avatar

March 4th. They still have a pretty legit chance of making it. These kids are playing at the highest level playoff games. This experience will undoubtedly accelerate their development. This time a year ago I was already thinking of what to do with a next day’s post. CBA intricacies, anyone? 🙂

There is no doubt that the Rangers are ahead of the expected curve and playing with house money this season. Of course, this will ramp up the heat on them, with expectations next season. I was
Impressed that they could play that kind of game against that team and be in it and competitive for 60 minutes. They surely earned more power plays than they got…….and when a guy gets yanked down by his collar 15 feet from the referee and there is no call, you have to understand there won’t be anymore calls. They sucked it up and competed. I do think is shows their weakness of size and strength……..areas they have to improve. Young guys who overhandle the puck instead of getting shots on goal are also an issue. That will improve. Too bad Georgie screwed up. If they play like that for the rest of the season they will make the playoffs. The experience is surely valuable.

    TYM,
Watching the league transition into more of a playoff type game in regards to officiating, you can see this roster isn’t as effective as these younger/smaller guys struggle to find space.
Even Panarin hasn’t been able to generate much during this skid
Chytil and Kakko seem to be having trouble with this. Kakko has had more opportunities the last 2 weeks to bury pucks than he has all year and he hasn’t gotten one past a goalie. No space and no time.. Strome has had a rough go of it lately as well aside from the goal in Carolina. Rangers not having much puck luck lately.

(probably as 2nd line on other team more likely to take it away). Usually if you move someone up its because they have a hot hand or injury, neither of those on the right side.

Personally i’d just throw Gauthier in Kreider’s spot and go from there – that line needs to replace his speed and size and he’s the ideal candidate – get Kreider to show him how to be a net-front defenders nightmare. There’s the tendency to look at our shiny high draft pick and “unleash” him but he could just as well get found out defensively and suffer for it. Lots of high picks did their apprenticeships on the bottom 6 before stepping up in yr 2 or yr3

Cregg7- not sure if you saw this one. If not, take a look at it. Pretty good statistical analysis of Wuhan outbreak. They now think that actual MR may not be much higher than a “bad” flu, around 0.1%. We’ll have more data as we go along.

There is a way to statistically predict the denominator based oh certain data, Beezle. Those numbers don’t mean much. Mild cases either don’t seek medical attention or aren’t being tested.

  166. ilb2001 Avatar

No, it hasn’t, e3. Not at all.
The denominator could be between 4 to 10 times more than reported.

Put it this way. It ain’t plaque. We will be just fine. Panic doesn’t help. Overwhelming our medical system will drain it, and people who really need help, won’t get it. Panicking, and buying everything possible will only increase Jeff Bezos’ income. And compensate easily what he lost because of this bipolar market.
