Rangers-3, Flyers-5

Not going to blame it on Hank. Came in cold after sitting almost a month, against a hot team. He didn’t help by not making an important save, the way he used to for a decade. He may not be able to anymore. The young guy who played across the ice can. Philadelphia got themselves a goalie after years and years of searching. He is good. Hank, on the other hand, is what he is. That’s something to discuss after this season.

The Flyers are a better team. And the Rangers were simply not good defensively today. Too many penalties, too many lost assignments, too many passengers. Something they’ve avoided largely over the last 6-7 weeks.

The Rangers got worse after deadline. Some of it because of bad luck, some of it by design. Losing Skjei ( right move by Gorton ) made their defense worse. We knew it was going to be the case. Smith isn’t going to fix it. They may need to burn another call up and bring Hajek.

They lost their number one goaltender. Though, as per DQ, Shesterkin might be closer to return than originally expected.

They lost one of their best top 6 forwards. They aren’t deep enough to overcome this. It’s unfortunate, but not much one can do about it.

At the same time, looking at the teams around them in the crowded race for a wildcard spot, they are all in a free fall. It’s still very doable. But not if they continue to play like that defensively. Their top guns are doing what they can. Time for someone else to step up. Grab this opportunity, boys.

Thanks guys. SN, very sorry for your loss. Have had a few similar the past few years though more distant friends.

Alex – no nausea but was tested for vertigo as had a pronounced floaty/bouncy feeling, one of those things you know is just not right. Second test indicated might be a brain issue, thankfully seems a false positive. May have been a combo of stress, caffeine and other environmental things but for now things do seem more normal/better. NYR were sucking pretty bad then too!

Is it too much to ask that we not play pond hockey and that we pick up the opposition in front of our net? It’s been an issue since the 2nd or 3rd year that Torts was gone.

Staal fronts opposition, unable to move, check, or tie up his man’s stick, then wanders and takes a knee. Useful only to further screen our goalie. Ain’t changing. Old dogs don’t learn new tricks.

Gravy – yes, a 3M cap savings next year, 1.5M penalty the following. If they resign Georgie they will use about 1.5 of the 3 which still leaves a bit for other rfas. The 2021 penalty is not really an issue as Kirk drops dramatically and cap will be higher as well.

Norm, that was the salary I assigned to Georgiev. $3M. Probably was about 0.5M too generous. Now, with Georgiev looking at a back up minutes next season, I think $2.3-2.5M is more realistic. $1.5M isn’t going to cut, he’ll get more in arbitration with his current numbers. I also think that $4M maybe too low for DeAngelo.

    Geez.

No matter if we get along on the blog or if we’d get along in real life. I wish you all good health and a long life of bickering with each other about the Rangers.

Right truth is other than our opinions on the rangers and whatever else gets mentioned here. We have no clue about what’s going on in each other’s lives aside from what we share with each other and those of you that are friends outside the blog. Maybe we should be kind to each other even in our disagreements. And maybe me myself needs to be the most vigilant with that.

Boneheads bicker. Boneheads also wish nothing but the best for bonehead brethren and everyone out there alike

Norm: ” If they resign Georgie they will use about 1.5″ They will use about 1.5M of the Hank savings to apply to Georgie’s new contract of 2.5M +/-, he already makes 0.8. In theory, they can come in with a goalie cap hit of 2.5+1.0+5.5 dead King = 9.0 which is less than what they are paying now for HL+either of the two kids and substantially less there after.

    ILB, Re your 7:01AM post:

I posted here at some time this past month that there was no doubt in my mind, Rangers win the Kings series with Igor in net. No one can convince me otherwise. Replace Nash with Panarin and they sweep the Kings 4-0.
Kings were a great team but very beat up by 2 very difficult series coming into the finals. They were there for the taking.

  47. Norm Merton Avatar

Beezle, I don’t see how what Georgie is making now applies to what they sign him for next year–you sign him or you lose him, no? (This is why I pay ilb the big bucks.) If you buy out Lundqvist, you have 3 to spend, but 1.5 dead the following season. So you spend 2.5 on Georgie, say, and 0.5 towards someone else. If you keep Lundqvist, you have 0 to spend on anyone, but 0 dead space either. If the plan is to tandem Shesty and Georgie long-term, then I suppose you buy HL out to get that done barring the latter agreeing to something else. I would have thought the plan was to pick Shesty or Georgiev to start (which choice seems pretty clear now) and pay a standard-issue backup not much after you sign Shesty next year and HL is gone. I am happy to have this all wrong, but that’s my current understanding.

Norm – what is important is the salary differential from one season to the next. We currently have Georgie under contract at 0.8 as well as Hank’s hair and Igor too. It will cost something on the order of an extra 1.5 to keep Georgie.

Igor and Georgie are in effect each other’s backup going forward until such a time as one is getting 60 games a year. You can call Igor’s salary the backup’s salary and Gerogie’s the starter salary, the names attached don’t matter.

Was going to watch some hockey. Till I realized Detroit has 35 points this season. Thirty five! You really have to find different ways to embarrass yourself on a nightly basis to get to that point.

  53. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

Hank saying he will sit down with the management to discuss his future indicates to me that he senses they will keep both Shesterkin and Georgiev for the near future, and that he will be open to either buyout or a trade. Trade is preferable from a team perspective, because that will save them $4.25M in cap space without any additional years left. And it’s not far fetched that a team will take him for a back up responsibility while spending only $2.25M in real money after he gets a $1M bonus on July 1st. My numbers are based on Gorton retaining one half of his salary/cap space.

  54. James G Avatar
    James G

ILB- know who’s going to get hurt by Detroit’s record? Jimmy Howard. UFA at end of the season. Wondering if he will go elsewhere (like Edmonton) or stay a Red Wing

  55. Norm Merton Avatar

ilb, if you care to explain Beezle’s salary differential business to me, feel free–I don’t understand what difference it makes since he’s not making that next year if he stays. If you are not so inclined, that makes sense, too. Sound like it may be a moot point if he’s traded. Don’t know HL’s incentives there, either, to allow the trade or force them buy him out. Nor do I understand Georgiev’s (and his agent’s) understanding of the starting-goalie market and if he has any leverage to get into it if they think he’s worthy.
