Game Day

Good morning, boneheads!

I am going to share my thoughts on how I’d proceed if I were a manager. Luckily for everyone, I am not. šŸ™‚

At this point I would make sure Kreider is re-signed. Short of him not wanting to stay in NY, it needs to get done. Also, at this point, I think the compromise will have to be somewhat in Kreider’s favor. It is what it is. I’m looking at this team and I believe they are ready to break out. Letting him go sets this team back. It’s time to move forward.

Next step is DeAngelo and Strome. I’m testing the market. If there is anything at the deadline offered out there that improves this team right away, and going into 2020-21 season, I am making that deal for either of them. If there is a pick (s) ( not a lottery pick, of course ) or a prospect (s), I am keeping them both. Both make, or could immediately make, this team better right away in a different way. Gorton has time. There is a 10% summer cushion to sort things out before the training camp ends. Things happen around the league all the time.

I would try and sign Strome. Both parties know Strome has finally found his place in this league. He traveled around enough. He is not going to get tier one, or even two, money anytime soon. I try a long term, in the range of $4.5M-$5.2M, say 4-5 year deal. If he doesn’t accept it, I let him go to arbitration, accept the award, and use him as a trade bait next season. He can still be very useful next year on the ice while Chytil continues to grow.

You are going to have to hear me out on DeAngelo. My goal is to turn him into a very high level blue chip. His skills will make him attractive to many teams. With Trouba and Fox staying here long term, and with the defensive depth in the system on the right that is mostly offense oriented, they can not afford to have 3rd pair offensive D-man being paid at the money Tony will eventually receive. His contract status isn’t in his favor. Again, three years removed from UFA, you use it to your advantage.

I would not take him to arbitration because I would want to be in charge of the contract length. I would want a one year deal. I would qualify him at 105% of his salary, playing by the CBA rules. I wouldn’t worry about offer sheet. If he signs it, I’d match. Now you have a player under longer contract who is not eligible for any movement clauses. Easier to trade. He is going to elect to arbitrate, no doubt. I accept the ruling, let him play next year while he is still playing for his next contract. I’d constantly continue to evaluate the market for him next year. Nothing attractive next season? Rinse, repeat. In July 2021 he is still an RFA with 2 years left before he is eligible for UFA. At some point the market for him will offer something that I could accept. Meantime, he is, similarly to Strome, making this team better right away. I would have to clear some money elsewhere, but I would not do it at the expense of either Strome or DeAngelo.

Just my thoughts.

I have done a 180 on DeAngelo, I don’t want him traded. But here is the problem they face. They are going to be paying a pretty good number for a RD3. Plus they have cheaper RDs knocking on the door. You can slow play, like ilb is suggesting, but you can get burned doing that. I think you strike now. Try to help the forward situation.

  5. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Trading Strome is much more difficult to do because he is a center, and behind Chytil, there a no centers to replace Strome.

The reason I decided to post this is because all I see around is they have to trade Strome or DeAngelo, or both, in order to keep Kreider. No, they don’t. There is no rush at all. If you need to dump some money, you look at those moves that hurt your team the least.

I am having a tough time with the thought of keeping Strome (who I see as a Panarin production) over DeAngelo. The negative about moving Strome is the hole it leaves at the center position. The positive is that he will never have a higher value than he does today. The question is how would Howden make out in that spot instead. Moving DeAngelo is a huge risk, because he has tools nobody else on the Rangers back line has, or any of their defensemen in the pipeline have. He also adds toughness and attitude, which they do not have enough of. I would rather they move out Skjei.

  10. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

Tym, the reality is that with Fox progressing at the level he has, DeAngelo will be a 3rd pair, PP specialist getting paid 2nd pair money. They simply can not afford that. Besides, this kid Nils is going to potentially bring a lot of offense on the R side. And it sounds like rather sooner than later.

  11. Bdl Avatar

And statically Keane is having a big year in Hartford. Trading DeAngelo makes sense.

  12. ilb2001 Avatar

  14. ilb2001 Avatar

Trouba will continue to log in big minutes against the first liners while making their lives miserable around the net. And during the next shift another line will have to adjust their jockstraps to get ready to play against Lindgren. Let’s not reverse back to having 5 out of six puck movers.

  15. TYM Avatar
    TYM

Ok. So what can they get for Tony D? What should they get for Tony D? If he did not come through as he has, the Stepan trade would have been useless other than clearing out his big salary and NMC. Kirby Dach? Dylan Cozens? Trevor Zegras? I doubt any of those 3 are available, even for Tony D. What I like about the original post is the reality that they don’t have to rush into this decision. It is a very good point and I have not read that opinion anywhere before today’s ILB post.

  16. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

TYM, things around the league happen all the time. And pure offensive D-men are still in high demand. My point was they are not in any position to make a knee jerk decision.

  17. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

I didn’t want to go into the CBA specifics about arbitration. There are some things that Gorton can use. But at the end of the day, arbitration is a funny thing. Generally, the arbitrator awards somewhere in the middle. You present your valid points and stats both ways. The bottom line, DeAngelo is not getting crazy money in arbitration. Even if he does it for 3 years in a row. He will still remain an attractive trade target.

  18. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

Just to clarify the offer sheet situation.

These are the current compensation numbers, it will be a bit higher next year, depending on the % of average salary increase. We will know in May.

    $1,395,053 or below: None

    $1,395,054-$2,113,716: 3rd

    $2,113,717-$4,227,437: 2nd

    $4,227,438-$6,341,152: 1st, 3rd

    $6,341,153-$8,454,871: 1st, 2nd, 3rd

    $8,454,872-$10,568,589:
    2 1sts , 2nd, 3rd

    Over
    $10,568,590+: 4 1sts

I imagine it would have to be a 4-5 year deal for Tony to be willing to sign. Essentially anything less than $4.23M AAV, I would match. Wouldn’t you think that having a player with his skills at these numbers would make him a very attractive trade target? Anything over $4.3M AAV, I’d not match. Take 1st, 3rd, add your 2nd and flip it for NHL ready young forward.

Shesty in goal tonight, Georgie tomorrow? Or vice verse? At some point, Hank must be the one that’s press boxed. I think if shesty was forced to miss the rest of the Jets’ game, Hank lets in 5 and the Rangers lose. Can’t afford to take a chance on the starter getting hurt and Hank going to F things up. It’s time for the two best goalies to dress….and that means no Hank.

I love how the debate between Strome and DeAngelo is going to have a heavy tone of “Strome’s production is because of Panarin”
Well let me ask you this- How much of Tony’s production isn’t because of Panarin?

This urge to trade DeAngelo I find downright bizarre. I’m probably underthinking it, but why not just sign the guy? He’s a stud, he has even more ceiling, he’s QB’ing the best PP in the league, and there’s no saying one of the young D prospects (like he’s even old) will develop into something as good. He’s the first guy I lock up.

  25. E3 Avatar
    E3

I’d ride Shesty too. Play him till he can’t play no more…

  26. James G Avatar
    James G

Norm, it’s because of organizational depth. I think everyone has made that clear. You don’t have that same depth at any of the forward positions. It also isn’t smart cap structure to to pay your RD3 an excessive amount of money. Especially when his defense is suspect at times.

  27. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

Norm, I mentioned the reason above. They can’t afford to pay $4.5-$5M to a third pair offensive specialist. He is currently behind Trouba and Fox. And they have cheaper replacements in their system.

  28. Rob Avatar

They are going to use their organizational depth on D to address the lack of organizational depth at forward, eventually. it could be DeAngelo. It could be Nils. I don’t know if Keane brings the value the other two may have in the trade market. If he does, it could be him as well.

    Interesting evolution on Kreider narrative.
Most posters in blogosphere and now even carp are saying gorton needs to sign him.

In October it was less than 50% That thought they should re sign him. Funny how that works when you perform so well in your prime and are a proven playoff commodity.

It all depends on how you view him. Do,you look at his goal and point total, and say that not enough, or do you dig a little deeper and see the amount of the teams goals he is on the the ice for. Last year it was over 40%. Not sure about this year.

  47. Beezle Avatar

Ilb – I would view the monetary side of a D’Anger contract differently (and D in general). Look at it as cost per pair. If you bring someone up on the left side that is similar to Lindgren, your cost for that 3rd line is maybe a little rich but definitely doable considering D’Angers offensive production.

The odd man out here is likely SkjeL as neither his pure defensive nor his offensive play have lived up to the contract AAV. Granted, he’s still young and maybe he improves, but given the apparent pipeline and need for some cap wiggle room if you can deal him for something reasonable you do it.

“Can’t find any logic to it!”
    “Why not Hank?”
    “Ughhh”
    “Damn it!”
Perhaps it’s because Georgiev is better than Hank at the moment, dingbats?

This is like Daniel Jones being day to day with an ankle thing after 15 years of Eli Manning never missing a game

Not easy goaltending consecutive games in the NHL. Some of these players are big and strong and fast. And temperamental. A guy could get hurt!

Kooz – early morning of the 73 Belmont, at dawn, as Secretariat was walked out of the Stable, he reared up on his hind legs abs marched about for about 5 seconds. At that moment, those close to Big Red knew they were going to witness something extra special….

Let’s hope that Hank is needed tonight. As a fan, I have zero confidence in his ability to win a game. If the rangers score x, Hank gives up x+y, where y>0

I think we should trade Shesterkin. Injury prone. And GMs now know that they consider him a #1 and not a back up.

Ilb I like your assessment of strome and kreider but idk if deangelos stock is ever gonna be as high as it is now. He might get poached in the summer. It all depends upon these next few weeks if we stay in the race i guess. We still have shattenkirks full cap hit to deal with too next season. All that said I think your plan sounds intriguing. I really feel we need to get another 1st though because this draft is stacked. Its hard man because The KZB line made a statement in Winny. I don’t envy Gorton right now that’s for sure.

Honestly though Ilb I was thinking maybe the best time to have signed kreids was back when he was struggling early on. He’s gonna want 7 maybe more now ya know? I think if they were gonna sign him they would have already. Hes too juicy right now. Idk ya gnome sayin? Its all good though we goin be alright doo dooo dip duck dodge dive and dodge.

  144. tommyG Avatar

From the start I stated on here trading kreider would be a mistake but after reading rumors I came to grips that the rangers were going to trade kreider. After reading ILB’s way of signing kreider and other rfa’s it would be a big mistake to trade kreider and IMO would set the rangers back a few years in this rebuild towards a playoff team. JD and Gorton must find a way unless Kreider wants ridiculous money like 7-8 mil per and won’t take slightly less to stay with the rangers.

Tommy theres no doubt he has played himself into being traded. Hes been productive and will get 7+ from someone. Time to have signed him was 3 months ago. Gorton covets this stacked draft and I don’t blame him

Tommy I covet 3 people in this world. My sexy next door neighbor, nicki minaj fat rump and Alexander Holts. Ok and Byfield but that ain’t happening. Only way we can move up is if we use the 1st we get for kreids then maybe we can get a holtz, lucas or byfrost

Shesty has never been an every game guy. He split games in the KHL and the AHL. They need to play him for a string of games to make sure he is up to it. Hank is No. 3 on the depth chart now. He and the team need to find a way for a soft landing for him.
