Rangers-3, Flames-4

Published by

Good morning, boneheads!
I got the Flu. How do I know? Because it felt like I got hit by a train last night. Ugh…

I’m glad Carp mentioned it in his review so I don’t have to try and find correct words in my inflamed brain to describe what I was going to rant about this morning. Kaapo Kakko has one of his better, if not the best, games of the season. He is gaining confidence, finally. In both his shot and his puck possession. So you sit him in the third because he took a penalty while trying to win a battle? Down 3-4, you need all your offensive weapons out there. Gregg McKegg instead of Kakko isn’t going to win you many games.

I’m not a big fan of benching guys, here’s why. There were 3 benchings last night. Lindgren was benched because it looked to me that he took the blame for a bad Panarin read. Skjei was benched for taking a penalty. That lead to Quinn leaving himself no choice but to bench Kakko for taking a penalty. You cannot bench a player for something, only to not bench another player for doing the same exact thing later on. Quinn put himself in the position of HAVING to bench Kakko.

Skjei is going from being an issue, to being a major issue. It’s hard to justify him playing top pair right now. Carp suggested Staal with Trouba. I don’t think that’s a good idea. I would be more inclined to put Lindgren there. Question is, what do you do with Skjei?

  3. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

My guess is what Quinn is going to do is make Skjei a healthy scratch, put his best friend back on D, and dress Haley.

enough already….You friggin bench Skjej and play Smith on defense unless Hajek is ready.

They need to score 4 or 5 to win with the team as currently constructed and coached. I don’t see that changing this season. It’s ultimately up to Gorton to make the changes required to make them more competitive. Trading every player as he reaches FA status is easy to do , but, it won’t make them a competitive team. It’s on him to make it happen. I don’t expect them to compete for the cup this, only to show improvement. I don’t see much.

Skjei apologists are going to be out in full force today.
He plays a lot of minutes and that means the coach likes his game so he must be good.
300 NHL games plus a few playoff rounds and he gets the same pass as guys in the 4th month of their nhl careers. 5.25 million per.

I haven’t watch to many ranger games this year and that’s because I can’t get into watching a team play pond hockey. It appears since Quinn has been the coach that’s the type of game the rangers play and that type of style won’t get you very far in the NHL so I feel until the rangers get a real NHL coach this won’t change.

  10. bobbyo2019 Avatar

James the Skjei apologists are too pre-occupied with Mark Staal to even notice

Good news: Kakko will probably be a better player once Quinn is gone.

Bad news: Kakko will probably be a better player once Quinn is gone..

Think the pond hockey has more to do with roster than coaching. Several young defensemen and two others who can’t play defense (Skej/Deangelo) and limited # of forwards that sustain any forecheck whatsoever

  13. James G Avatar
    James G

Just don’t be surprised if it gets uglier as this month gets going. A lot of games against teams that will expose what they call defense and take advantage of the 35 shots a game they’re letting up on average

I was of the opinion that DQ would make it through the offseason, but, if they continue to play like this I suspect there will be a change in the Spring. He will be a victim of the old idea that it is easier to change the coach than all of the players. And the offseason is when the best selection of coaches is available. They will be bring in a veteran coach with a history of playing tight D and see what he can do with them. There may also be some roster tinkering. If that doesn’t help some more serious personnel changes will be required. Right now there is no proven commodity (other than Breadman)on or behind the bench so it’s not clear where to start to make things better.

  16. bobbyo2019 Avatar
    bobbyo2019

think Quinn is safe for another year but there will be more roster tinkering starting next month

  17. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Talent if s there. It’s top heavy though. Need a coach who is going to put in a system that includes playing D. Structure if you will. Someone who gets the best out of the team, not just a few guys. A coach who is secure enough in his abilities that he is not afraid to name a captain.

I don’t want to seem negative, no not the Minx, but I think DQ might be heading for an audition on the Gong show?

  19. cooscoos Avatar

Now Shay joins the never ending buy-out list? The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  20. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

I’m coming around to BDL’s point of view. They don’t have a foundation to build on. I don’t think DQ will be in charge this time next season. They will look for a coach who is a proven commodity so that they can evaluate the roster moving forward. If they don’t make the move in this offseason they might wind up with Knoblach as an in season interim coach who either turns them around enough to get the job full time or allows them to find someone next offseason.

  21. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

I don’t think Skjei is a buyout. He will be a sell low salary dump. Maybe a bottom six forward in return for him who has been a disappointment where he is. He was unproven and should have gotten a bridge deal after which they could have let him walk.

  22. bobbyo2019 Avatar
    bobbyo2019

respectfully disagree here….they need more players who can and are committed to play D

  23. cooscoos Avatar
    cooscoos

To anyone who actually follows each game, Staal seriously outsucks even Skjei. Never in position, never even touches an attacking opponent. Plays in front of crease lurkers. Takes a knee quicker than an NFL QB ending a game. And takes few penalties only because he won’t engage.

  24. cooscoos Avatar

What puzzles me more than anything is how Lindy Ruff is still employed here.

  28. cooscoos Avatar
    cooscoos

The main thing that makes me wonder about Q’s competence is his not asking upstairs for Ruff’s resignation or firing. That he doesn’t want to make Lindy the scapegoat speaks well to his loyalty, but speaks horrors about his responsibility and judgement.

  29. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

I like and respect Marc Staal, but how he plays, good or bad does not matter. He’s not part of the future. He is a place holder till Miller, or any of the young D are ready to take over. How Skjei plays does matter. He was supposed to be part of the future.

But as bobbyo said, I think this is more on the roster than Quinn.

But the truth is if the same things keep happening and it becomes the Rangers MO. They’ll be forced to change coaches eventually.

If we can’t get anything of worth for Skjei, let him go to Seattle where he can suck and save the whales at the same time. He’s not a NY talent.

  39. Bdl Avatar

Quinn, like a lot of coaches, has no feel as to who is going and who is struggling during a game. Chytil was going last night. He needed to play more, and certainly should have been out there at the end instead of Buchnevich, who has not been going for over a month.

  40. jpp Avatar
    jpp

Again it would take some bitter-pill and ego swallowing.

But that would be the best thing for Quinn’s long term future as well.

He works with Torts as a associate head coach and gets to learn from Torts how he corrals and herds and runs everything.

If he learnt that stuff and then let’s say went back to college at some point. Hed probably become the saban of hockey. Can recruit anyone and legitly runs a pro system in a pro way. Talking multiple NCAA championships.

Sometimes the best things come from bending out of the comfort zone

  41. cooscoos Avatar
    cooscoos

Ready or a sour taste of reality? Staal and Skjei cost us more $ than Howden, Kakko, D’Anger, Chytil, Nieves, Fox, Hajek, Lindgren, Kegg, and Pepe COMBINED.

  42. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Sounds like something both Quinn and Torts would be all for.

  43. jpp Avatar
    jpp

It’s not like he’d have to give back the money.

He’s just have to work through those initial weeks and press conferences, in which he has to say ‘yeah look, I’m taking a step back here and that ain’t easy to do from a pride standpoint, but it’s all in line with the goal, we want the rangers to be the best team they can be, I want to become the best coach I can be, we all decided this would be beneficial for the club, and I’m willing to sacrifice and still be here’

Hell Sullivan was Torts right hand man, and not only are Quinn and Sullivan really good friends. They look like clones.

The partnership ain’t so far fetched as it sounds. The roles and titles and pride/ego make it sound far fetched

  46. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

In all seriousness, I think if CBJ were stupid enough to fire Torts, JD would be all over it. Quinn would disappear into the night. Never to be seen or heard from again at the NHL level.

  48. cooscoos Avatar
    cooscoos

Despite his passive/aggressive in-game benchings, Q is actually very polite to this group, Tort would tear each and all a new azzhole.

  49. cooscoos Avatar
    cooscoos

Suspect that JD, a former goalie who has known personally the misplaced ignominy of having a shabby, ragtag D in front of him and who (damn the slackers) brought in a feisty no-nonsense Torts type to Columbus, will not let this putrid defense go on much longer.

  50. Pete Avatar
    Pete

taking a penalty gets you benched, but a horrendous give away on a 5 on 3 that leads to a goal does not…go figure.

Only chance at improving the first pair with our current crop of D is to move Lindgren there, even if it means Fox doesn’t get the benefit of playing with him. Staal could be even worse up there, Carp has blinders on for that guy for whatever reason

  51. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

Unlike many of you, I have no problem with the Kakko “benching” – he took a lazy penalty at a critical time. DQ has been very consistent in saying the issue is not so much taking a penalty, its more about the hows and whys of it.

Lindgren I think got the hook because he was gliding between two guys skating to the area in front of Hank, one of them I believe scored. Lindgren has to be better there. He also took an unnecessary slashing penalty late in the third.

  52. cooscoos Avatar
    cooscoos

  54. Beezle Avatar

Don C. was out there late in the third – from 2:35 to 1:26. Buch was on the ice after Chytil’s prior shift. There were enough stoppages that rest probably wasn’t and issue; more likley a preference for Buch in the crowded 6 on 5 space.

Speaking of Chytil – an area he really does need to work on is FO. 2/7 last night, 36% on season (97/171). Howden is a bit better at 46% (185/215) and in fact is there best when short handed 55% (35/64) compared to Mika’s 43%.

Spring 2019! Thanks, those are a year old and you want same price as others selling current model. Very slimy. And for that reason, I did not order ‘direct’ from manufacturer as they fulfill through something called Quivers, taking stock from (more) local stores. Of unknown model year, of course. Lundqvist with 6 assists so,far in WJ tourney looks very smooth

No question Boyle would have helped this team, and I am aware that McKegg is currently the 4th line center, but signing him over the summer would not have made sense. They needed to keep spots open for the 3 young centers, and as you mentioned, Strome. From Boyle perspective, at this time and point in his career, signing with a re whatever this is, would not have made sense. You sign with a team who’s goal it is to make the playoffs.

That guy obviously didn’t want to move Again, I remember reading an account about how him/his wife liked the new home they moved into nearby Cory Schneider, they’re all friends. I think he wanted to stay in the tri-state personally

I think that’s why he was unsigned for so long

I thought someone broke the blog. No comments for over 12 hours.
Lindquist is 2 to 3 years away from MSG. Maybe they will be ready to contend by then.
They complete the hat trick tonight in Vancouver. What’s the over/under for how many they allow in the first? I’m going with 2 to 0 after one and the first goal being allowed 3 minutes in. JT will score it.

See man. These Russian players, they’ve learnt from their predecessors and coaches that sulking when you made a mistake or aren’t playing well shows you care.

    I think that’s a big problem of buchnevich’s headcase

Missed a chance to see Lindquist play live last year when I was in Sweden for work when his team was eliminated from the playoffs. If they had hung in for another game I was all set to go the game.

Man what a tough spot for that Russian goaltender. Came into the game 5 mins into the 3rd, didn’t face a shot for 8 mins, 2 in total

And now he’s in 3 on 3 OT

Miller with 40 points already way out there and up there. Guessing his ‘problematic’ side has few outlets up there in tree and forest country like in NY and he concentrates on ice. 🙂

BDL great example of a healthy alternative to benching Miller and his attitude the way AV constantly did in NY. He’s getting first line minutes and you don’t hear anything about his attitude, right?
Unfortunate when you consider that the kid WANTED to be a Ranger and was setting careers highs every year.

Miller’s departure from NY was like Seguin’s from Boston. Had to be off ice issue involved.

    Kinda cool breakdown.

Making the goalie go from post to post has always been hardest save, best percentage shot you could have.

    Good afternoon, boneheads!
The flu stinks! And I had a shot too. I can only imagine if I didn’t get a shot what it would feel like. Your patients always tell you how bad it is, but you really can’t appreciate it until you get it yourself. If I slept more than I did over the last 24 hours, I would be legally dead.
    Is there a game tonight?

Most of the hospital I work in had flu shots and it’s still running rampant through the staff this winter.
Had some kind of bug last week but it didn’t get much worse than a low grade fever and some fatigue.
No shot to make you invincible.

Don’t think the Rangers win tonight not being negative just being real. I will be cheering on the yoot line though. Bold prediction, the Rangers will trade Kreider, Buchnevich, Fast, and Beat Wide at the deadline! This is for coos, Staal needs to retire he is irrelevant concerning the rebuild.
