Good morning, boneheads!
I got the Flu. How do I know? Because it felt like I got hit by a train last night. Ugh…
I’m glad Carp mentioned it in his review so I don’t have to try and find correct words in my inflamed brain to describe what I was going to rant about this morning. Kaapo Kakko has one of his better, if not the best, games of the season. He is gaining confidence, finally. In both his shot and his puck possession. So you sit him in the third because he took a penalty while trying to win a battle? Down 3-4, you need all your offensive weapons out there. Gregg McKegg instead of Kakko isn’t going to win you many games.

I’m not a big fan of benching guys, here’s why. There were 3 benchings last night. Lindgren was benched because it looked to me that he took the blame for a bad Panarin read. Skjei was benched for taking a penalty. That lead to Quinn leaving himself no choice but to bench Kakko for taking a penalty. You cannot bench a player for something, only to not bench another player for doing the same exact thing later on. Quinn put himself in the position of HAVING to bench Kakko.
Skjei is going from being an issue, to being a major issue. It’s hard to justify him playing top pair right now. Carp suggested Staal with Trouba. I don’t think that’s a good idea. I would be more inclined to put Lindgren there. Question is, what do you do with Skjei?
My guess is what Quinn is going to do is make Skjei a healthy scratch, put his best friend back on D, and dress Haley.
enough already….You friggin bench Skjej and play Smith on defense unless Hajek is ready.
Can we get a new coach yet?
You will get a new coach in June.
They need to score 4 or 5 to win with the team as currently constructed and coached. I don’t see that changing this season. It’s ultimately up to Gorton to make the changes required to make them more competitive. Trading every player as he reaches FA status is easy to do , but, it won’t make them a competitive team. It’s on him to make it happen. I don’t expect them to compete for the cup this, only to show improvement. I don’t see much.
Skjei apologists are going to be out in full force today.
He plays a lot of minutes and that means the coach likes his game so he must be good.
300 NHL games plus a few playoff rounds and he gets the same pass as guys in the 4th month of their nhl careers. 5.25 million per.
I haven’t watch to many ranger games this year and that’s because I can’t get into watching a team play pond hockey. It appears since Quinn has been the coach that’s the type of game the rangers play and that type of style won’t get you very far in the NHL so I feel until the rangers get a real NHL coach this won’t change.
James the Skjei apologists are too pre-occupied with Mark Staal to even notice
Good news: Kakko will probably be a better player once Quinn is gone.
Bad news: Kakko will probably be a better player once Quinn is gone..
Think the pond hockey has more to do with roster than coaching. Several young defensemen and two others who can’t play defense (Skej/Deangelo) and limited # of forwards that sustain any forecheck whatsoever
Just don’t be surprised if it gets uglier as this month gets going. A lot of games against teams that will expose what they call defense and take advantage of the 35 shots a game they’re letting up on average
February could be uglier once trade deadline passes
I was of the opinion that DQ would make it through the offseason, but, if they continue to play like this I suspect there will be a change in the Spring. He will be a victim of the old idea that it is easier to change the coach than all of the players. And the offseason is when the best selection of coaches is available. They will be bring in a veteran coach with a history of playing tight D and see what he can do with them. There may also be some roster tinkering. If that doesn’t help some more serious personnel changes will be required. Right now there is no proven commodity (other than Breadman)on or behind the bench so it’s not clear where to start to make things better.
think Quinn is safe for another year but there will be more roster tinkering starting next month
Talent if s there. It’s top heavy though. Need a coach who is going to put in a system that includes playing D. Structure if you will. Someone who gets the best out of the team, not just a few guys. A coach who is secure enough in his abilities that he is not afraid to name a captain.
I don’t want to seem negative, no not the Minx, but I think DQ might be heading for an audition on the Gong show?
Now Shay joins the never ending buy-out list? The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I’m coming around to BDL’s point of view. They don’t have a foundation to build on. I don’t think DQ will be in charge this time next season. They will look for a coach who is a proven commodity so that they can evaluate the roster moving forward. If they don’t make the move in this offseason they might wind up with Knoblach as an in season interim coach who either turns them around enough to get the job full time or allows them to find someone next offseason.
I don’t think Skjei is a buyout. He will be a sell low salary dump. Maybe a bottom six forward in return for him who has been a disappointment where he is. He was unproven and should have gotten a bridge deal after which they could have let him walk.
respectfully disagree here….they need more players who can and are committed to play D
To anyone who actually follows each game, Staal seriously outsucks even Skjei. Never in position, never even touches an attacking opponent. Plays in front of crease lurkers. Takes a knee quicker than an NFL QB ending a game. And takes few penalties only because he won’t engage.
What puzzles me more than anything is how Lindy Ruff is still employed here.
Coos Staal has been most steady Dman this road trip
‘steady’ as in perpetually incompetent. A bad egg in a bad six pack.
If this flames out and all parties agree to part ways if Torts doesn’t become available. I’d hire deboar
The main thing that makes me wonder about Q’s competence is his not asking upstairs for Ruff’s resignation or firing. That he doesn’t want to make Lindy the scapegoat speaks well to his loyalty, but speaks horrors about his responsibility and judgement.
I like and respect Marc Staal, but how he plays, good or bad does not matter. He’s not part of the future. He is a place holder till Miller, or any of the young D are ready to take over. How Skjei plays does matter. He was supposed to be part of the future.
I think Dolan would stand in the way of a Torts return,
Now Ilb and carp are pilfering what I’ve been saying all along about guys like mckegg, fast, smith etc playing instead of others late in the game…just 🐔 💩 coaching.
But as bobbyo said, I think this is more on the roster than Quinn.
But the truth is if the same things keep happening and it becomes the Rangers MO. They’ll be forced to change coaches eventually.
The team needs to start playing to make their coach look good if they like him
I bet Hank rues the day he urged that Torts be axed. He wouldn’t long put up with this shabby D.
Feel better Ilb, ypu should go see a doctor 😉
Y o u
One of the dudes on HFboards whos vetted and has told me in DMs that he has contacts in the Calgary organization has recently stated he thinks they should bring back Torts
And that he still has some guys here in very high places who absolutely love him. Drink the kool-aid love him
Meaning torts
If we can’t get anything of worth for Skjei, let him go to Seattle where he can suck and save the whales at the same time. He’s not a NY talent.
Quinn, like a lot of coaches, has no feel as to who is going and who is struggling during a game. Chytil was going last night. He needed to play more, and certainly should have been out there at the end instead of Buchnevich, who has not been going for over a month.
Again it would take some bitter-pill and ego swallowing.
But that would be the best thing for Quinn’s long term future as well.
He works with Torts as a associate head coach and gets to learn from Torts how he corrals and herds and runs everything.
If he learnt that stuff and then let’s say went back to college at some point. Hed probably become the saban of hockey. Can recruit anyone and legitly runs a pro system in a pro way. Talking multiple NCAA championships.
Sometimes the best things come from bending out of the comfort zone
Ready or a sour taste of reality? Staal and Skjei cost us more $ than Howden, Kakko, D’Anger, Chytil, Nieves, Fox, Hajek, Lindgren, Kegg, and Pepe COMBINED.
Sounds like something both Quinn and Torts would be all for.
It’s not like he’d have to give back the money.
He’s just have to work through those initial weeks and press conferences, in which he has to say ‘yeah look, I’m taking a step back here and that ain’t easy to do from a pride standpoint, but it’s all in line with the goal, we want the rangers to be the best team they can be, I want to become the best coach I can be, we all decided this would be beneficial for the club, and I’m willing to sacrifice and still be here’
BDL you just soaked me in sarcasm 😉
Hell Sullivan was Torts right hand man, and not only are Quinn and Sullivan really good friends. They look like clones.
The partnership ain’t so far fetched as it sounds. The roles and titles and pride/ego make it sound far fetched
In all seriousness, I think if CBJ were stupid enough to fire Torts, JD would be all over it. Quinn would disappear into the night. Never to be seen or heard from again at the NHL level.
Torts in NY…they wouldnt get a powerplay until 2025
Despite his passive/aggressive in-game benchings, Q is actually very polite to this group, Tort would tear each and all a new azzhole.
Suspect that JD, a former goalie who has known personally the misplaced ignominy of having a shabby, ragtag D in front of him and who (damn the slackers) brought in a feisty no-nonsense Torts type to Columbus, will not let this putrid defense go on much longer.
taking a penalty gets you benched, but a horrendous give away on a 5 on 3 that leads to a goal does not…go figure.
Only chance at improving the first pair with our current crop of D is to move Lindgren there, even if it means Fox doesn’t get the benefit of playing with him. Staal could be even worse up there, Carp has blinders on for that guy for whatever reason
Unlike many of you, I have no problem with the Kakko “benching” – he took a lazy penalty at a critical time. DQ has been very consistent in saying the issue is not so much taking a penalty, its more about the hows and whys of it.
Lindgren I think got the hook because he was gliding between two guys skating to the area in front of Hank, one of them I believe scored. Lindgren has to be better there. He also took an unnecessary slashing penalty late in the third.
Always liked McDonuts, wish he were here, (Pink Floyd?) but 6’1, 215, I expected more hard-nose hockey from him.
Like Lindgren, too, but he admittedly shat the bed last night.
Don C. was out there late in the third – from 2:35 to 1:26. Buch was on the ice after Chytil’s prior shift. There were enough stoppages that rest probably wasn’t and issue; more likley a preference for Buch in the crowded 6 on 5 space.
who is the bigger horror show now Buch or Skjej?
Great to see Staal interviewed again last night. His scratch-your-azz insights are priceless.
If Shay used his considerable size, grew a sneer, and kicked some occasional azz from in front, I could more easily put up with his inconsistencies.
Speaking of Chytil – an area he really does need to work on is FO. 2/7 last night, 36% on season (97/171). Howden is a bit better at 46% (185/215) and in fact is there best when short handed 55% (35/64) compared to Mika’s 43%.
Not spoken of nearly enough – our anemic FO techniques.
If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.
BobbyO – SkjeL for sure. Buch is a bit snake bitten offensively right now but you can envision him going on a bit of a point run which would make his lapses with the puck easier to take. SkjeL is just lost out there and has been for a while.

Coos, following up on something from a few posts back, if you still want to be subscribed to the Athletic, they will doubtless send you a 50% off offer as a President’s Day deal, hell they may even send you one for MLK Day. Its a lousy business model bilking your more loyal customers but it is what it is.
Thanx, Rob. I suspect you’re right.
Panarin of all people contributed to the mistake parade on the 4th. Skjei, Trouba, Lindgren, DeAngelo all chipping in. Give the team credit for their resilience, not a bad trait, but they are so mistake-prone and so horribly indisciplined that they almost have to be resilient.
BDL your right
4th what? Fourth of July? Krusty makes the occasional reckless pass, but he completes so many of them, I certainly don’t have the chutzpah to criticize.
What lately pissed me off about the Athletic is that they had the colossal balls to deny me access to my full priced, paid account unless I clicked off on 20 new pages of ‘rules.’ Who in hell knows what is included in there?
ROB
But the athletics response would be that’s how most companies do it.
(Hence the problem)
Made it sound like they were a grassroots alternative to the major outlets and just used their initial approach to establish themselves as a major outlet.
Now it’s business as usual.
Happy for its employees though I guess
Coos,
Probably that if you agree to the terms, that they are able to track you for a year regardless of whether you cancel or not
Yes. They stated that. Outrageous.
Track me all you want mofos.
Just realize on the flip side.
Somebodies probably tracking you and you probably got a heck of a lot more to hide.
Like that database in Utah that keeps all these records that can’t be legally looked now, but if the laws ever change for the worse, they are waiting there to be opened up and used as ammo against people

Torts will= our very own Billy Martin❤️
Mormons own one of those mail-in DNA genealogy outfits. It’s been said that they secretly, in-absentia baptize into Mormonism everyone who utilizes their services
I like The Athletic product and I’m happy for a lot of the people who work there. But it’s a big question mark how sustainable the business model is once the VC money dries up
Torts would kick Reggie Jackson’s ass since he’ll (Reggie) be 74 in May.
I meant to bring this up last night but I didn’t have the stats to back it up. Still don’t but the point remains.
I was that game in Carolina, fox’s First game there too. I think he had 2 Pts that night.
3 Pts against the flames.
Kinda speaks to how good he might be, that quietly without bringing attention to it, he kinda shoved it down their throats. Not the teams themselves, maybe the players were chirping him, but more bc he didn’t like getting boo’ed.
That’s a nice internal fire to have
Crumbum newspapers fired all these very capable guys. Journal News the worst.
Hahaha that is crazy you say that coos.
My mom sent me an ancestry test gift. And I told her, mom I’m giving anyone my DNA to study. No way mom. I looked at that name of the company on the box, f’ing Utah man.
It’s sitting in my closet. Will never be used
Not*
Why were they booing Fox in Calgary?
jpp – Law enforcement is now using unwary DNA customers’ results to identify any of your relatives who might fall into their disfavor.
Coos
Fox said before the game that Canadian beer sucks…
Harvard guys know their beer. 🙂
Billy Martin is an interesting comparison to Torts, James.
Missed the game last night – I can’t get good TV reception as long as I’m wearing this uncomfortable tinfoil hat
…and not just in his possible (but unlikely) return to power here…
Yeah well they can suck these nuts lol
(Cooscoos
Fox was third round Calgary pick who refused to sign there. So they traded him to Carolina. Again wouldn’t sign.
Switching gears, I finally just listened to the JR full interview that caused the chaos, did Kathryn Tappen publicity complain or protest ?
Off-topical:
1. For the boarders/skiers – beware backcountry.com. Conveniently leave out model years on descriptions. Asked about some boots in customer chat. 2019! they say. Is that 2018/19 or 19/20? Spring 2019! Thanks, those are a year old and you want same price as others selling current model. Very slimy. And for that reason, I did not order ‘direct’ from manufacturer as they fulfill through something called Quivers, taking stock from (more) local stores. Of unknown model year, of course. I’m so tired of being a detective before I buy anything.
2. JPP don’t get me started on our friends at n*a or dna testing privacy, I’m low on tin-foil (I once asked a chick what ailse the tin foil was in and she looked at me like I had three heads instead of just two. ‘you must mean aluminum foil? ailse 6’ Kids these days!
Wicky, I believe she said something to the effect that they are still good friends but his comments were inappropriate. I think its a good answer considering he put her in a tough spot.
The DOD has recommended that their employees not use the DNA testing kits because it’s not clear who could use the results against you. You don’t have to be a tin foil hat wearer to have concerns.
Jim Montgomery was fired over alcohol abuse
https://nypost.com/2020/01/03/jim-montgomery-was-fired-as-stars-coach-over-alcohol-abuse/
Somebody send Quinn a case of Sam Adams Boston Lauger 😎
How about sending the rest of a case of Sam Adams Pete!
Wicky-
Tappen didn’t initiate that. Social media and the internet did. That was JR talking a big talk in the cool kids room, and he’s lucky as heck that tappen and his wife are good friends I guess.
But then again, the whole segment that led to the comments wouldn’t have come up if JRs wife and tappen weren’t good friends, and I’ll give JR the benefit of the doubt that he’d never had said anything like that if she were just a co-worker
Kudos to Montgomery.
Addiction is an illness
(So long as it wasn’t women/abuse/race related)
And he gets right, he’ll be a head coach in the NHL again, his season and playoff run with Dallas last year speaks for itself.
https://nypost.com/2020/01/03/jim-montgomery-was-fired-as-stars-coach-over-alcohol-abuse/
KR has been an immature nitwit way back to when he was drunkenly trashing hotel rooms and no doubt well before that.
*JR
Old friend of mine was fired from his profitable National Sales Manager position when, disagreeing (tipsily) with his boss at a hotel bar, answered, “You think I just fell off a turnip truck?” with “Not sure what kind of truck you fell off , but you’re head’s not working.”
If you must drink, drink odorless vodka. This way, your bosses don’t know you are a drunk, they think you are just stupid.
‘illness’ a shabby excuse for birdbrainitude and arrogant stupidity.
Enjoy

Omg.
I’m tempted to change that to my link on my name
But something tells me I shouldn’t, bc I wouldn’t be doing the guy or our team any favors
Coming our way soon
Our own Lottery pick!
#1 for The/If + a guess who prospect
#1 for D’Angelo
#1 for Stromeo? Maybe not
Bazooka bubble gum for The Legend!
And the rewhatever continues!
Torts? Who the f* is that f*ng clown? F* you and you and Sather and his f*ng cigar too!
Ah, ok. Thanks guys.
I’ve never liked mike mccarthy.
reminds me of AV.
I thought the giants were in the business of stability. That guy will be gone in 4-5 years if they don’t have a RUN
Wait for belichick
Love it. You go, Q!
We got a QB belichick could do it all over again with and prove something you know he’d love to prove.
He can win without Brady. I don’t buy for a second, Bill F’ing belichick hasn’t felt the itch to prove it
Bill’s pushing 70. Eventually your sperm gives out.
Yeah right. Belichick is gonna be doing deadlifts into his 80s.
Man I wish I had more friends that were ranger fans. I want to that gif to people, but nobody else will care.
EV gave me his number when I met him at the panther game. I just texted him it. I’m imagining him looking at that while in class right now
He just texted back 2 secs later as I’m typing this saying ‘That is awesome”
Hey Rabbit Ears – **** you. You’re nothing but a ******* moron that doesn’t know **** about a ******* thing. Now ******* turn up my ******* radio. I’m strapped in my ******* car seat and I ******* can’t move.
More and more I’m thinking gorts a) waited too long, or b) knew he was likely to either trade for a center or that strome was gonna stay at center and that either howden or andersson were gonna end up at 4C
Otherwise I don’t know why Brian Boyle isn’t on this team
Boyle would be nice fit but he thought Anderson and /or Howden were ready to step up
Lundqvist with 6 assists so,far in WJ tourney looks very smooth
No question Boyle would have helped this team, and I am aware that McKegg is currently the 4th line center, but signing him over the summer would not have made sense. They needed to keep spots open for the 3 young centers, and as you mentioned, Strome. From Boyle perspective, at this time and point in his career, signing with a re whatever this is, would not have made sense. You sign with a team who’s goal it is to make the playoffs.
I saw a little of Hanks son in the WJC. I agree, very smooth.
I agree bdl
Though i don’t agree about your Boyle perspective.
That guy obviously didn’t want to move Again, I remember reading an account about how him/his wife liked the new home they moved into nearby Cory Schneider, they’re all friends. I think he wanted to stay in the tri-state personally
I think that’s why he was unsigned for so long
*article
I thought someone broke the blog. No comments for over 12 hours.
Lindquist is 2 to 3 years away from MSG. Maybe they will be ready to contend by then.
They complete the hat trick tonight in Vancouver. What’s the over/under for how many they allow in the first? I’m going with 2 to 0 after one and the first goal being allowed 3 minutes in. JT will score it.
Canes with 40 shots against the Caps and lose imagine that?
Good game going
The Swedes PP runs through hanks son huh
http://www.hockeydabeast413.xyz/habs.html
See man. These Russian players, they’ve learnt from their predecessors and coaches that sulking when you made a mistake or aren’t playing well shows you care.
I think that’s a big problem of buchnevich’s headcase
What # is henriksson
Wait how confusing is that
We have henriks son
And hanks son (Lundqvist)
Missed a chance to see Lindquist play live last year when I was in Sweden for work when his team was eliminated from the playoffs. If they had hung in for another game I was all set to go the game.
WHAT?
3 on 3 overtime in semifinal game of a tournament like this.
That’s weak sauce
That’s a bummer ORF.
I think your gonna have a bunch of chances to see him play soon enough
Man what a tough spot for that Russian goaltender. Came into the game 5 mins into the 3rd, didn’t face a shot for 8 mins, 2 in total
And now he’s in 3 on 3 OT
27.41%
Miller with 40 points already way out there and up there. Guessing his ‘problematic’ side has few outlets up there in tree and forest country like in NY and he concentrates on ice. 🙂
‘Hey Mom – when are you and Dad going to visit?’
‘Your Dad’s working with the bank on a second mortgage, JT, and then we’ll try to get plane tickets.
J.T. is also being treated like a first line player. Playing 20 minutes a night. Also at 60% on face offs.
At 6’1, 216, he should have served as our enforcer. Remember when he got caught with the ‘brass knuckles?’
Puttin on the foil!
https://66.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_llmeqf7rGG1qdohdno1_500.gif
I was having this convo yesterday regarding JT with some guys on HFRangers
It’s too bad
BDL great example of a healthy alternative to benching Miller and his attitude the way AV constantly did in NY. He’s getting first line minutes and you don’t hear anything about his attitude, right?
Unfortunate when you consider that the kid WANTED to be a Ranger and was setting careers highs every year.
Miller’s departure from NY was like Seguin’s from Boston. Had to be off ice issue involved.
JT didn’t jive with AVs pacifism
Shoulda chose JT and ousted AV a year earlier

Making the goalie go from post to post has always been hardest save, best percentage shot you could have.
Its like to see more of lines 2,3,4,9, and 7

Good afternoon, boneheads!
The flu stinks! And I had a shot too. I can only imagine if I didn’t get a shot what it would feel like. Your patients always tell you how bad it is, but you really can’t appreciate it until you get it yourself. If I slept more than I did over the last 24 hours, I would be legally dead.
Is there a game tonight?
One flu over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
New Years Day, EVERYONE claims they got the flu. We all know better. 🙂
Go Time post scheduled.
I can’t remember how many years ago was the last time I called in sick.
Ilb not sure what I had before xmas but it was real bad and I also have flu shot every year
Minx was that you on wfan today talking about nasty wild boars in your Tampa friend’s yard?
Wicky I’m back at the secure northern bunker. Found 8″ of super wet compressed snow. Great for snow forts. Not so great to plow!
ilb
My wife and I had it for almost 3 weeks our Dr. said it was a virus. I hadn’t that for as long as I can remember.
Beezle
I live in St Pete, civilization. Tampa is a jungle full of boars and boltz 😎
ilb
I forgot we had flu shots as well.
Most of the hospital I work in had flu shots and it’s still running rampant through the staff this winter.
Had some kind of bug last week but it didn’t get much worse than a low grade fever and some fatigue.
No shot to make you invincible.
Unless you’re talking Irish Mist. Few shots of that and I’m a god 🙂
Feel better ILB!

We need a law mandating Eastern time for the entire continent. Having coffee (out of nyr mug) just to try to make it through the first period.
Don’t think the Rangers win tonight not being negative just being real. I will be cheering on the yoot line though. Bold prediction, the Rangers will trade Kreider, Buchnevich, Fast, and Beat Wide at the deadline! This is for coos, Staal needs to retire he is irrelevant concerning the rebuild.
NEW POST
