Rangers-5, Hurricanes-3

Good morning, boneheads!

They got Hurricanes number this year, that’s for sure. When did Lemieux break his hand? They’re going to miss him, no doubt. This isn’t good.

I’ll deal with head hunting cheap shooting Kreider if it means we get the raw skill freight train of a player he was back to being last night.
His chemistry and his motivation on the ice when he’s paired with Zibanejad is ridiculous at times. They feed off of each other.

  2. James G Avatar

The fourth line is atrocious btw.
They are incapable of doing what a fourth line needs to do.

  3. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

You mean Smith, James. Smith is atrocious. Put him back on D. Rotate him with Staal. He tries, but he not a forward.

  4. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

They won’t call anybody up for tonight’s game, they will just give Haley a sweater. Then before the road trip they will call up DiGuisepe.

  5. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

They won’t do it, understandably, but calling up Kravtsov would be an interesting move. There is a top 9 spot empty after all.

  6. James G Avatar
    James G

Any call up will be a PR move and Haley will play every night.
Then it’ll be Smith AND Haley that are atrocious

  7. Bdl Avatar

Brady Skjei entire career was on display last night. Started out brutal. Got better as the game moved along. Then back to bad.

  8. Bdl Avatar

They will put Chytil, Kakko, and Howden together, and then Quinn will not like a shift, and jumble all the lines.

  9. James G Avatar
    James G

With all else equal your fourth line should be Howden between McKegg and Fast.
If you had rolled a kid line to start the season (against the grain but fun for sure) then Kravtsov could have been in the top 9 even if only in a call up situation right now and Fast could be where he belongs and Smith would be out of the picture.

Quite frankly I don’t want to hear the crap about Smith anymore. They need him to kill penalties? The PK is 22nd in the league. Was it really worth demoting Kravtsov promoting Fast and playing Smith to be 22nd at the risk of being maybe 23rd-29th?
Like I’ve been saying. He plays because they’re paying him. Everything else is BS

Logical anti kids in the NHL reply:
“This isn’t a developmental league. Kravtsov needed to play in Hartford to get used to the rink”

…well it didn’t stop them from doing it with Chytil last season. And by not doing it again they essentially have sacrificed Kravtsov as well as punk boy Andersson from being able to help in any capacity.

Carp traded Kreider again today, and again blamed the Shattenkirk buyout for it.

Whatever the Kreider trade ends up being is going to be a bad traded.

Think about this. If the find a way to keep Kreider. What will they need?

  14. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Watching the USA team in the world juniors, Boston has a couple of guy onit that I would not mind the Rangers acquiring. Beecher, and I think his name is Hall. Beecher can really skate for a big man, and Hall has PITA 3/4th player written all over him.

  15. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

If I’m reading your question correctly, they would need an upgrade from Buchnevich, and Fast in the top 6. They could already have that in house with Kakko, and Kravtsov.

  16. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

They will also need to get lucky with someone like a Morgan Barron becoming a top 9 forward. And they will need Chytil to make another jump in his game. Plus 2/3 Dmen.

  17. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

You’re reading me correctly, BDL. They will need a 3rd line center. Could that be Howden? They’ll need to reshape their 4th line. I wouldn’t be surprised if they retain Fast. My point is, they may already have some pieces for the next season. If they keep Kreider, they can’t keep Strome and DeAngelo. Georgiev will need a raise, but he may be gone too. I don’t think their cap situation is as awful as people make it look. Season after next they are looking pretty good.

  18. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

I think if you can find a way to to keep Strome on a reasonable contract, that would also be a help. The problem with doing that, IMO, is the trickle down with Chytil. My concern is that as long as Quinn has Strome, he will use him in the number two spot blocking Chytil. This year it’s fine, I think Chytil is progressing nicely, but after this year, you want to give Chytil more responsibility, more ice.

  19. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

Chytil with Panarin needs to start this season. No need to wait. A R winger on that line has to be shoot first player though.

  20. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

I root like heck for Howden, but at what point do you pull the plug. Is he the answer as the third line center if you trade Strome? I don’t think he’s given you reason to believe that. You can’t go into next season the same way you started their season. With questions at center.

  21. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

By the way, put aside future cap hit, and unsustainable shooting percentage, Strome is a good hockey player.

  22. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

Agree, the only reason to keep Strome is for him to play 3rd line matching center position. Is he capable? I think they need to find out. They use him in a more offensive role this year. They need to give him a different look this season. You can’t ride Zibanejad in both scoring and matching situations. He’s done well, but it’s going to be too much to ask, especially once they start going deep in postseason again.

  23. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

I would much rather have Strome for the next two or three years than Buchnevich. You know what you are getting from Strome night after night. High energy, high effort.

  24. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

I agree, Strome is a solid hockey player. I think he may do well in matching position, and he will definitely help in scoring department. It may come down to Strome or Kreider, I don’t think they can keep both.

  25. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Strome has quietly given the Rangers 31 pts so far this season.

BDL, If I could stay on my skates I might have at least 15 playing with Panarin. 😃

  27. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

    Ilb,
They can do it. There is a lot of deadwood, on this team. Find away to get rid of it. I don’t think Buchnevich is deadwood, but I would start there. Smith needs to be gone. Skjei too, but I would wait one more season till the expansion draft and hope Seattle takes him. Staal needs to go. I’d look to move DeAngelo as well.

  28. James G Avatar
    James G

May I chime in? Brady Skjei’s contract is the one that needs to be/can be moved. The cost outweighs the benefit. That’s the plug that needs to be pulled.

If you can keep Kreider and move on from Skjei you could probably keep Strome. The question is, do you want to? Or do you want a Center that is superior to him defensively?
The forward group has to improve defensively somehow. You’re not giving up on Chytil. I personally wouldn’t give up on Howden just yet.

  29. bobbyo2019 Avatar

Bingo on Skjej ….move Buch also

  30. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

I think Skjei is headed toward a Vesey/ Names straight salary dump. Maybe for a 2nd or 3rd round pick. I’m not sure who is playing the left side in Hartford, but, he won’t be any worse defensively and clearing the cp space would be really helpful. If that would help them keep CK they ought to do it sooner rather than later. Brady is a big guy who can skate who will never be a top 4 NHL D. Unfortunately he is being paid like one.

  31. bobbyo2019 Avatar

Zach Jones looks like a left handed Adam Fox. Miller is playing more of a shutdown role which is good for his development given his limited experience playing D. He did snow angel a couple of times which had me screaming at the TV. I wish they had some forwards playing in the tournament.

  35. James G Avatar

Shut down role for Miller is something I’m a-ok with. When he gets here he needs to be a left sided Trouba. Not a DeAngelo.

Just catching up, was out with the confederacy boys last night. May have given myself away just wearing a shirt outside while they had heavy coats on….

You guys were pretty manic in the game thread… seemed like a great game from the score updates I was getting. Even managed to catch one on my phone from the stream.

Within reason I think you need to keep Strome and he is a top six. And I’m not all that concerned if some of the kids are on third line for a few seasons. They aren’t being paid the money a first rounder in nfl gets – there is no pressure to push them higher. Will it be dreadful if some don’t move up until age 24? Are any of them McDavid or Crosby? And it would be nice to have a third (or fourth) line that can put up a few points.

Kreider is a term and money issue. 5x6M I can live with but not 7yr

  37. James G Avatar
    James G

Fourth line center to play 3rd line LW? Nice.

  38. TYM Avatar

I think if Kravtsov works out, it makes Buchnevich expendable. I also agree that Skjei should be expendable. If they keep him another year, there is a good chance he ends up in Seattle. For me, I would very much like to see them keep Kreider if they can move other players. That $6MM hit to the cap next year for the Shattenkirk buyout hurts. I am wondering if Buchnevich might go at the deadline. If a Kravtsov makes progress in Hartford perhaps he could play the last couple months in NY. If Rykov is ready, he could come up if they move Skjei. Of course, the deadline will probably be a lot more boring then this.

Trouba gives up the puck, the goal, thirty seconds in and SalmonJoe says: “Oh, Rangers give up the puck…Score!” No mention of Trouba. Typical and pathetic. I want Dave Maloney on TV for starters. Wonder if Doogay got hisself canned for his growing honesty?

  40. St Pete Eli Avatar

I like Strome to but as long as he is here DQ will always play him over Chytil with Bread. If they keep Strome he should be moved to the 3rd line. The Legend belongs on the 4th line period, wake up Quinn? Gorton needs to find a way to keep Kreider. Beat Wide, and Buchnevich need to go to have any chance of keeping him.

  41. James G Avatar
    James G

Buchnevich is fine as a player.
Really the only valid argument is the redundancy of wingers who are all skill and no thrill.
You need to tweak the RW a bit with some size and grit that can play top 9 minutes. Unless Kravtsov isn’t in the picture in which case just find that type of player via a different trade or free agency. Get Fast out of there.

  42. St Pete Eli Avatar
    St Pete Eli

Back to the 4th line. We need one that plays more then 5 min. Pepe on the 3rd line is fine, but Pepe and Fast as yor 4th line wings is better. If Quinn would just submit to rolling 4 lines. All they will need is that 4th line center. Smith, Haley and Mckegg are useless! You can’t convince me otherwise.

    TYM,
the thing is that after next year the cap is sort of resetting itself.
    Staal- gone.
    Hank- gone.
    Smith-gone.
Shatty cap hit goes way down.
That’s the last of the bad deals from yesteryear. Which does two things-
1- makes Skjei’s the worst deal on the books
2- gives them a chance to properly manage their roster without worry about getting around deadweight to do it.
So if they can find a way to survive one year of cap hell next season they should be alright.

BDL, catching up with your post from last night, I don’t root against Rangers. When they dress Haley, it kills me and then I root for him. When Lemieux makes one of his terrible defensive plays I’ll point it out, and I’ll get as pumped as anyone when he does his buzzsawing in the o-zone. Kreider is another who makes me crazy with his inconsistency and who is still the second most exciting forward on the team. I’d love it if he took a discount and stayed, but he continues to be their best trade bait, has been for a while. I don’t do black-and-white.
