Rangers-2, Capitals-5

Good morning, boneheads!
That wasn’t a good defensive game they played last night. Wrong team to play loose in your own end. Hank made the score somewhat cosmetically palatable. But they were much better engaged physically. Somehow they’re able to do that against Washington.
You have to like what you see in two youngsters back there. Hajek is progressing very well, and Fox has done enough good things already to make sure they do not regret giving up two second rounders for him  Yes, I’m pretty sure it will be another second rounder in 2020. He is staying here for more than 30 games. Both Fox and Hajek will get better.

I can’t recall any specific play by DeAngelo that landed him on a bench. Did he say something again?

Something tells me we will see Chytil pretty soon. I am all for it. I don’t think he can do any worse than Strome, Howden, and whoever else tried that second line center position.
C’mon guys, it’s only 5 games played during this disjointed schedule. We are already talking lottery pick?
Now back to training the puppy. Gosh, she’s cute 😃

    What’s wrong with the Rangers?
    A) The Dmen suck,
    B) the system sucks
    C) the coaches suck.
    D) the forwards suck,
    E) all of the above
    F) The Rosen Curse (“and this one will last a lifetime”)

The coach needs to go. Now. His comments and choices this season just revealing more and more that he hasn’t got a clue. Those comments about Kakko alone are a fireable offense.

I thought Quinn would be the right guy for the job…. Up and coming college coach… Appreciated his candidness, etc. But to echo what doodie said, he needs to be shown the door. He’s nothing more than a facade. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing from him post game last night and the night before. He thought we were more engaged in the Devils game??! What in the actual f—? And enough with the Brendan Smith as a forward garbage… Either put him on the back end, or scratch him. The whole coaching staff sucks…. I’m over it.

I for one wouldn’t put much emphasis on the coach’s post-game interviews in deciding whether to keep or fire him.

I have a different theory on Kakko. He had a short summer. I don’t think he’s in the best of shape.

  11. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

BDL, if Kakko doesn’t live up to his expectations, everyone, starting with Gorton would be gone.
I do not if your theory about his shape is correct, it’s possible. I think we are dealing with an elite talent who, at 18, just realized how little space he has to work with at the NHL. And how much less time he has to react and move. He’ll adjust.

  12. Bdl Avatar

I’m talking Kakko this season ilb.

  13. jpp Avatar
    jpp

    That.

    How little space he hasZ

He’s used to doing whatever he wanted, and barreling through and around people while stickhandling with one hand on the skate. You watch some of his highlight films. He completely dominated the last couple years.

There’s a snowball effect that’s happened with his game in this short sample. He noticed after 5 periods that he didn’t have a center who was gonna feed him and set him up consistently, so he started hunting the puck more myself and than trying to do something on his own. And bc of the lack of flow in games sometimes, and other times he’s left standing at the bench waiting to get on during the PP and youve seen him take really long shifts bc probably he wants to make something happen and he feels like he’s not getting enough icetime (though he’s probably not ready for it).

But like ILB said, he doesn’t have the time and space, guys are stronger, better and more physical than he’s used to. And he’s learning that’s he’s not gonna be able to rely on just bullying through while swatting guys off him, yet.

  14. jpp Avatar
    jpp

I think right now, he’s best served by getting the puck in a spot where he has to make 1-2 moves, beat one guy to than create an open shot.

Like his 1st goal. That’s a situation a real goal scorer, great hands, instincts etc.

His instincts to drive the net send him and strome in that direction, and he’s got the skill and offensive instincts to dish to strome and expect it back. He gets it back, 1/2/3 stickhandles. And pinpoints his shot. Boom boom, prime opportunity to finish, boom finished.

He’s gonna have a hard time trying to skate/stickhandle 25-40 feet and then get his shot. But if he’s getting it faceoffs and in, it’s one stickhandling sequence and fire the puck, and he’s that good, that he’ll convert a large percentage of those opportunities

  15. jpp Avatar
    jpp

You guys hear who kakko said was the guy he tried to emulate his game after most growing up.

When asked if it was guys like Selanne and Finns, he said of course selanne, but that he really loved the way Patrick Kane used his hands in stickhandle, and that it was Kane’s game/instincts that was what he wanted to be able to do out there on the ice

  16. cregg7 Avatar

I think he’s learning his way. Shows flashes of immense skill. Has heart. Isn’t getting pushed around like Hughes (150 lbs frame). I have no problem with the candid response by Quinn on him.

They played against a very good and experienced team last night. They are a young team with an inexperienced coaching staff. The result should have been anticipated. We are early in the rebuild and the demo is not even complete. I’m going go back to the old Tom Renney perspective of looking at the season in 10 game segments. They have a 5 game home stand coming up. After the Tampa game (likely a blowout) let’s try to see if they have made any progress. If we over analyze each game we are just going to get frustrated and wind up kicking the dog a lot.

Haven’t been able to watch the ranger games the past 2 games and I see I didn’t miss much of anything but I see the ledge is in full force. I didn’t expect much change this year because the ranger’s blue line still stinks and until they can replace Staal, DeAngelo and Skjei with better defensemen that won’t change and until the contracts of lundqvist, staal and smith are gone and can replace strome, Fast, Mckegg and haley with players who can actually play with playable toughness nothing will change.

  47. Pete Avatar
    Pete

4 or 5 games in yes, but think it’s pretty clear there is a ton left to do as far as the build or rebuild goes. And honestly if we are being honest the best thing for the players’ development would be for all three of Kakko, Howden and Lias to be in hartford for a spell, but especially Howden in my opinion and Kakko if they aren’t going to get him more time with Mika. Seems like a no brainer to have him on the 1st pp unit at the very least.

But looking at the rest of the roster there is going to be some real work to do as far as filling in the forward slots from the 2nd line on the next couple years.

And we are all becoming broken records, but D isn’t going to be in good shape until Staal, Tony and sadly Brady are removed and competent defenders are here. It may be 2 seasons until that is the case as by the Miller and hopefully Robertson will be ready on the left side and Lundkvist on the right.

Does seem like trying Lindgren on the right would be worth it as well if they aren’t going to let him play the left now (and he likely will be blocked going forward not to mention likely exposed in the expansion draft)

Let’s focus on positive Skjej has been better last few games and Trouba absolutely destroyed one of Caps coming across the blue line

  50. Norm Merton Avatar

I see this year’s team this way–think of a legitimate Stanley Cup team and how many Rangers are on its roster? I count Zibanejad and Panarin as second-liners, Kreider on a third line, Fast on a fourth/PK, Trouba as a 3/4 D/2nd PP. That’s it. And Quinn, of course, coaching its AHL farm. It’s a rebuild through and through, still not sure why they jumped the gun and threw the big bucks at Trouba and Panarin. A lot of money to prevent them from being the worst team in the league. I’d be delighted to laugh at this comment soon, but surely this year is all about next year?

  51. bobbyo2019 Avatar

Norm if Panarin is a 2nd liner they are in trouble

Kreider is a top 6 player on a cup contender let’s not be silly and Panarin would or could be 1st line on most teams. Agree on Mika unless we are talking a team like Washington where Mika could be 1st line with Ovechkin or Tampa with Kucherov

agree re Fast and Trouba (tho could play 1st with a top lefty)

Panerin is not a second line talent. He is a top winger, cup team or not.

    Mika is a bonefide 1C.

Are you saying that because Malkin plays on a team with crosby he is a 2 C cause that’s where he slotted the cup years? I looked at it as pitt had 2 first line centers and one of them is a top 10 player of all time.
Mi believe Zika would be as good or better than the 1 C on the past 2 cup champions or even the runners ups as well.

I’m trying to think of more than 3 teams panarin isn’t a first line winger on…and I’m not talking about we want to spread our scoring out situations, I’m talking a team where panarin isn’t on the first line because there are two wingers better than him (yes, that includes playing him at rw).

There aren’t 31 lw better than him, not sure there are 31 wingers regardless of side better than him.

  66. cregg7 Avatar

  67. Norm Merton Avatar

ilb, there’s no way Panarin is less than the 15th-best (worst case) left wing. Your Stanley Cup winner is not playing the 15th-best wing on its first line necessarily is all, and it’s angels dancing on pin heads, anyway. Panarin is a SC-roster guy, and my point is that the Rangers do not have a Stanley Cup roster and are about as far removed from one as you can get. I put 5 guys on such a roster, others may say fewer or perhaps more.

  68. cregg7 Avatar
    cregg7

I can play this game all day

    Ok norm

    Last years cup winner

Panarin is first line LW (Tarasenko right)

    Panerin would be their 1LW

Do I need to keep going back through all the conference finals teams over the past five years saying panerin isn’t a second liner

Please explain further your comment on panerin being a second liner. Please

  71. Norm Merton Avatar

cregg7, I didn’t know your were Panarin’s agent, and please put him on your first line, makes no difference to me. Panarin’s a stud, and any real SC-contender would take him in a heartbeat. Was not the point of my post to begin with, as you know.

  72. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

    Cregg
Don’t waste your time, that’s just a ridiculous point the troll is trying to make.

That’s like saying the pens wouldn’t play panarin over guentzel (or was it sheary?) on the top line for their cup runs.

It just shows a lack of nhl knowledge by trying to make a point that cup winning teams gave the “best” players at every position. It’s not fantasy hockey, it actual nhl hockey.

It’s the best team that wins the cup, the hottest goalie not the best goalie. Is the Vézina winner the cup winning goalie every year?

A cup winning team might have the 5th best centre, 33rd best right wing, and 11th best left wing on its first line.

12th best left d and 18th best right d on its first pair.

    9th best goalie

asinine and lacking nhl knowledge of a point.

Mcdavid arguably best player in the league…how many cups?

  73. cregg7 Avatar
    cregg7

    Ok. Not panerin agent

Zika was also in your comment as a second liner on a SC contender.

Please explain Zika outside of Crosby Zika can be a 1C on any team that’s made a run

Is he better than all those guys. No. But he is good enough to have been considered a 1C on those teams playing the way he has the past 2 seasons and he hasn’t even shown he’s hit his ceiling yet.

  74. Norm Merton Avatar

The troll! Attaboy, Wick. In any event, I agree with just about everything you said in your 2:03, ad hom digs notwithstanding. My point, again, is that the Rangers have very few of the mix of talent that comprise the SC-winning rosters you talk about, and that I believe they quite a distance removed from it. You haven’t mentioned who you think a Cup contender would pluck from this roster–nor do you need to–but there’s no point everyone screaming into the night whether Panarin would be a first- or second-liner. He’s a stud, wasted on this roster in my view.

  75. Norm Merton Avatar

Cregg7, I don’t think Mika’s a 1C on a Cup winner. He could be, and he’s sure as hell a 2C on that team. Top-20 center in my view. Anyway, I named my five guys, put them where you will 🙂

  76. cregg7 Avatar
    cregg7

So if you could get Backstrom or Schenn (listed as 1C on blues) for Mika Plus a sweetener (say a second round pick or prospect) right now, you do that. (You have to pay more to get the better player if you think schenn or Backstrom are better.

Or for giggles. Do you trade them straight up

Cause those two were your last two SC champs playing 1C

Just trying to show that your comment was ridiculous to say those two are second liners so dogmatically

  77. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

I think Mika is a better centre now than brassard or stepan or any other centre the rangers had in the cup finals…so they were a few wins away from being cup winning team centres.

Point is, depending on the team composition, cap situation, injuries etc, I’d say more than 80-90 percent of the ranger players currently on this team could easily be potential targets for a Stanley cup winning team.

  78. Norm Merton Avatar

cregg7, where’s the dogma in “I count Zibanejad and Panarin as second-liners”. It’s a mere opinion, not insistence, and once again not the point of the post. Wicky has the roster at 80-90% desirability, I have it at 25%. I don’t know who his 16-18 players are, nor do I know who any of your guys might be. No problem here.

  79. jpp Avatar
    jpp

Norm, tell me again mika and panarin would be 2nd line on St. Louis

  80. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

Take this a step further, I’m going to speculate that you wouldn’t trade a half eaten can of tuna for Haley (nor would many others) but yet Haley was an active roster member playing on a team that was fully intending to win a cup with him playing on their team as a contributing player (played in 11 games).

So it’s about fit as well as many other things, not the “best” player from a stat sheet.

  81. jpp Avatar
    jpp

But I kinda agree with you.
Butt everyone would agree with me.

I love mika as an elite (would probably be the best in the NHL) 2C. He’s not your prototypical cup winning team #1 center. Thing is how many guys are there in the world that would fit that criteria. Your talking guys that can produce like mika and play that playoff style 200ft hard game, which is what makes him not your ideal 1C. He’s becoming more willing to play that way, but you see how against guys as good as him who that comes natural to, he gets outmanned a number of times a game himself. The more he competes against those guys and Learns he needs to be aggressive and assertive and lean into his battles against those guys and then see who comes out on top.

But we’re talking 10-20 guys in the world who fit the mold we’re thinking of, and some of them haven’t fully come into their own yet themselves, so.

Hard to say. He’s certainly gonna get the chance to prove he is over the next couple years here

  82. Bdl Avatar

Backstrom will get paid absurd money too. Easy to collect 60 assists every year when you have one of the best players of all time on your wing your whole career.

  84. Norm Merton Avatar

That’s an ugly 4-7 post-season game log on Haley last year. I can’t imagine the Sharks, in retrospect, wouldn’t have wanted some playable toughness there rather than a mere body.

  85. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

Real world assessment is it isn’t a video game or fantasy hockey and every single cup winning team or cup contending team is not going to have more than a few (at best) top 5 players at each roster position (forwards 1-13, dimensional 1-7, in goal) and the rest are going to be the “best they can get” vs cap hit and how well they fit into team structure/system.

It’s just unrealistic and pure gobbledygook to think the cup winning team has the #1 1C through the #1 rated 13th forward etc).

Hockey is that weird sport that the sum is actually greater than the individual parts…part of the reason analytics will always fall short in being anything other an additional tool (not the driving force some pretend it is) in determining hockey player and team success.

  86. Pete Avatar
    Pete

if kakko and kravtsov develop as expected Mika can be the 1st line center as we become a contender, but from a forward perspective the key there is finding a second line center in the mold of Stepan, ie good for 50-60 pts and sound defensively. they don’t have that yet in my opinion unless Lias or Howden take big steps forward (Chytil if he pans out could be good for more pts but will never be as good defensively)

Doesn’t matter, the fact that he’s there is the point.

Would San Jose rather have a stud lineup with their 12th best forward aka 4th line winger being evander kane…of course, who wouldn’t, but it’s asinine and ridiculous to act like that’s possible in a cap world.

Thinks like that are possible on Olympic teams and in tournaments where there are no salary caps and even then there are “better” skill players always left off because the system/structure of said team as well as how the player “fit” in the room.

I look at the roster and I say 80-90 percent would be playable on a Stanley cup winning team…I can only think of smith (due to salary vs position/role), deangelo (hot steaming mess on d plus locker room issues), and maybe Hajek (inexperience vs role) and that’s it.

I can see every other ranger that played last night being on a cup contender.

  96. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

They didn’t Pete, but they were part of the roster build that was intended to, that is the point of this topic.

We can go down the road of similar players in similar roles that HAVE won the cup if you want to because you know as well as I do they are there.

That’s an entirely different topic to this though and it’s been addressed to death in the past.

Haley was not the answer for the Sharks in the 12/13 role, clearly, and you wouldn’t need Evander Kane to improve that spot. Nobody will be looking to him to fill out a Cup-run roster this year, I’m fairly certain, not that it’s even close to being a difference-maker role.

I’m not looking to any of the Rangers’ D if I’m a contender, other than Trouba. Staal is experienced but expensive, Skjei is erratic to say the least, and Fox and Hajek are prospects. DeAngelo–talented, but yikes!

Forwards: Andersson, Kakko, who knows yet. Buchnevich, maybe in a perfect fit? Howden, Strome fungible with any number of centers. Lemieux has yet to prove his fitness. Smith–$$. Lundqvist I would take but can’t, and Georgiev? Maybe, in some weird circumstances. Maybe Chytil in a gamble.

Next year, or later this, I hope the situation looks different!

ha i’ll agree with that Wick, no need to rehash. I will say that if the trade deadline were right now and the playoffs two months away I don’t think any playoff bound team would really be pushing to add Howden or Lias (even Kakko wouldn’t be a sure thing), not because they don’t have future value but because neither has yet shown they are that helpful in regular season play, let alone the playoffs. For instance for a key defensive zone draw or pk would you really want either of them out there at this moment? (Obviously wouldn’t want them out there down a goal from an offensive perspective)

So I am going to put on the rose colored glasses and list what are the positives so far.
Mika seems to be showing that last season wasn’t a fluke. Panarin is even better than advertised and has an all around game. Trouba gives them some physicality that they haven’t had on D in a while. Hayak looks like he is fitting in. Fox has some potential. Andersson looks more like he will be an NHL player, but, not as a 1C or 2C.
The negatives are that no one else has stood out at all and the team play (forecheck and D zone play) is almost nonexistent. I don’t expect much in the standings, but, would like to see a few guys step up and them all play as a team.

  110. cooscoos Avatar

fluke? how do you have a fluke like that?

Pack wins in OT. Chytil 1G 1A and 6 SOGs. Doesn’t seem like he likes the pizza in Hartford. Joey Keane 1G 1A also. Huska in net for the win.

Isles of course win again. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them lift the cup this June.

On a more serious note though…Why can’t our man Quinn have our team trap like No Neck? I don’t understand how they (NYI) keep winning and playing great defense with that no name lineup.

DQ is on the clock this season too. I don’t see him getting canned this season, but, if they don’t seem to be progressing he will be on a short leash next season. The coach who starts the rebuild is rarely around when the team starts to contend. He says all the right things, but, his results at BU didn’t live up to the quality of recruits he brought in.

Was it all caps? I’m not down on DQ , but, some of the problems they had last year haven’t gone away. Odd man rushes, D zone coverage and the lack of a forecheck. Ultimately the coaching staff is responsible for these things.

So to just beat the dead horse with Norm. Sorry 🐴 🐎

Brayden Schenn is the blues 1C. They won the cup. Schenn was a 5th overall pick in 2009 btw. Anyways. Numbers wise, Mika is as good or better than him. So why exactly do you keep saying Mika would be a second liner on a Stanley cup winner when he is as good or better than the 1C that won the cup just last year?

  121. cregg7 Avatar
    cregg7

Also. Sorry I didn’t list my guys that I think a cup contender would trade for to go on a run. Even though it is very subjective. Ie See Mccloud getting traded to Nashville… Around here no one would ever have thought in a million years a team would trade for him.
As teams did for Nick Holden. Another under appreciated hated guy who bruins wanted for their run. (Depth wise)

Mcquaid was also traded for by a contender. A guy that would not have made your list most likely the way you constructed it.

    Anyways. I think a good team would trade for;
    Panerin
    Zika
    Buchnevic
    Kreider
Strome (yes for depth at center)
Namestnikov (gone bow but also will be gone at deadline again to contender)
    Kakko
    Mckegg
Lemieux (Maybe, I think he’s built for playoff style, could be like maroon on blues)

Young guys Howden and Lias not yet because teams on runs want experienced guys.

On D if rangers are salary can probably trade smith
    Trouba
Skjej (people here don’t like him but I garuntee other teams going on a run would take him)
Staal for experience depth on back end can never have too much depth but would need to eat cap hit
Danger I think would be picked up as well.

Not many would want rookie D for a run. But Fox would probably draw interest.

From last night’s Wolfpack write-up. Pack won in OT off a game from Mr. DiGiuseppe

Kravtsov posted a picture on Friday of fans wearing his old KHL jersey with sad face emoji.

He’s certainly feeding into the rumors for sure. Maybe it’s just for some attention as he feels like a small fish in a big pond right now? Alittle worrisome. But he just a 19 yo kid. Who’s knows. Is he just missing and waxing on his old situation or is he actually that impatient?

  129. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

Kravtsov is 19. He’s probably inpatient. He is also making $70K at the moment, his salary was much more in Russia. I think he envisioned a different scenario. I’m sure the rumors him wanting to go back to the KHL have some merit. Someone needs to make it clear to him that going back to KHL isn’t going to speed up his return to NY. Staying in Hartford will.

  130. jpp Avatar
    jpp

    Exactly.

Him going back to Russia just sets back his clock. To get the minutes he wants in NY, and to be eligible for that 2nd contract

Very depressing about Kravtsov. It was a gamble taking him ahead of Wahlstrom that I hope we don’t regret.

  132. jpp Avatar
    jpp

Deep down somewhere kravtsov is sore that kakko fell into our laps and suddenly he became the guy we fasttracked.

Kravtsov was our stud forward prospect and everyone’s clamouring to get him here and suddenly kakko’s in the picture and all the hoopla and attention and shoe-in to make the team. And kravtsov’s down in Hartford.

I’m guessing but i think that plays a part in how kravtsov is feeling.

  133. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Kravtsov did everything that was asked of him over the summer. Came to NY to workout, learned more of the language, played in the prospect camp, played in traverse city. Add in he’s 18, and can see why he may be a little put off about his current situation.

  134. jpp Avatar
    jpp

To be honest that longer he plays like a pouting kid and the KHL mentions on his part continue. It’s almost a forgone conclusion he’s heading back, would you want the New York Rangers to bend over backwards to accommodate a sulking 19 yo. What does that say to the rest of the kids and PROs in your organization.

This is some Negative BS brewing and in large part bc he’s getting tainted/twisted advice. If you want to be in the NHL on the rangers as soon as possible, why the HELL would you ever leave the team? That’s some short-sighted BS from bad handlers

  135. 4everanger Avatar
    4everanger

Those, deliberately leaked rumors, is just a childish, impatient, blackmailing attempt to get quicker what he wants by “intrigue” rather than by elevating own level of play. It is a result of discrepancy between his distorted vision of himself and coaching staff. Hope, it’s not a character’s red flag and he will get to his senses. Needs wise soothing advise, including not to listen to the poisonous russian media. Preferably, from Russian players (Panarin?).

  136. jpp Avatar

And the thing is: he’s got the same US representative as panarin: slats buddy thanolfous.

Chytil seems to be dealing well with the situation as is Shestorkin . Maybe they can preach a little patience to Kratsov. Hopefully the organization is not just throwing him in the deep end. I assume they are working with him to show him what he has to do to get to the show. BTW is Rykov healthy yet? I haven’t seen his name in a box score. I could see him going back to the KHL if he winds up in Maine.

Quinn has been excellent on the PR side, which counts for a lot these days unless you’re Belichick. Eventually, though, your team needs to establish some sort of consistency—he’s got the rest of this season to teach, I would imagine, and then they bring in an experienced pro for the next phase.

I’m sorry but I feel for the coach

All these built in questions cuz he’s a 1st time NhL head coach, got this asinine schedule to begin with and the vultures are already circling pinning it on him.

Measure that guy in February. How have the players progress from now to then. Not 3 weeks into a messed up opening schedule

Comparing him to trotz is brutal to begin with.

I’m not sure trotz would have had any interest in our job. Before the caps won the cup, you could say he was probably of the mind to coach a cup contender if he were let go, to try and win a cup with another team and prove the caps wrong about him. Suddenly he wins, and his outlook changes but the rangers have already blueprinted a different course.

Something tells me trotz and Lou became a duo bent on ruining some teams seasons. They paired up due to common personal feelings about their old situations.

Now fire AV and bring in trotz when he became available from nashville. That’s a different story
