It’s been very quiet since the buyout window opened yesterday at 5 pm. Still time until tomorrow until 5 pm though. What’s interesting is that even the usual suspects ( LB and Co ) have been very quiet without giving anyone any indications one way or another. At least, not yet.
We will wait. What else can we do? Oh, yeah, talk 🙂

13.18 The request for Regular and Unconditional Waivers to Central Registry will be
processed every day at 12:00 noon New York time. All Waivers will be subject to a 24 hour

I don’t think those two things are in conflict. The buy out cannot be completed until after waivers. What the other thing says is the buyout process has to start before 5 PM.
So, you file with the league we are going to buy out player X. Then, assuming the player doesn’t have a NMC, player X has to go on waivers at the next available opportunity. If the player is unclaimed and clears waivers, then the team can complete the buyout.
That’s it, I lost all patience and bought myself out.
I have to admit, I’m shocked it has been this quiet this late into the buy out window.
I hope the Rangers don’t pull a Tallon and fax the paperwork too late
13. The Club, in addition to other rights hereunder, at its option, by written notice delivered
to the Player in accordance with Exhibit 3, may terminate this SPC on the following conditions:
(a) The Club shall offer the Player on Unconditional Waivers, either before or
promptly after the notice of intention to exercise the Ordinary Course Buy-Out option (herein

Ok, the last one is from SPC.
Question, are we assuming that the “notice of termination” is the same as a buyout paperwork? It’s not clear to me.
They don’t want to go the buyout route Doodie. They are going to exhaust all options first. If I had to guess after reading that everyone is in play, I’d say they are trying to trade Namestnikov, and then buyout Smith. If they can’t trade Namestnikov, they will but him out too. They do not want to buyout Shattenkirk. One of the S has to be gone by 5 today.
In other words, is it possible that a “notice of termination” needs to be given to a player, registered, and then the separate paperwork needs to be filed for buyout? Then the 24 hr rule applies.

Not announcing buy outs weakens your trading position. If Namestnikov is indeed a guy they are planning on trading, it would have been smarter to announce some other buyout first to make us less desperate to move his cap hit.

I would rather the Rangers not buy out Shattenkirk. I like the guy and am disappointed that playing for his childhood club did not work out. However, his game and confidence had gone down the tubes and that was before the Rangers signed him. Gorton has to take the rap for this, like he does for the Smith, Namestnikov and Spooner contracts. That said, owning up to it and doing something about it that is best for the club on the ice should be praised. He could ave kept Shattenkirk around to save face for himself and avoid the hideous cap hit in year 2. If this leads to Kreider staying, I will be happy. At the least, it probably guarantees that Kreider going will be a hockey trade that yields something useful or decent futures instead of a desperation, 5 cents on the dollar deal.

I think the assumption is that they are going to bury Smith in Hartford. I’m not so sure Alex’s idea isn’t the one they go with. Smith as the 7 Dman/13th forward.
Further – next season, Namestoolong gone + replacement + Kirk leftovers nets about an increase of 3M in cap, so they’ll be 2M over and will still need to pay Kreider order 6.5-7.5, an increase of at least 2M. They’ll need to buyout Staal just to get under and then extend the buyout dead weight. What a mess. Maybe we get a miracle and HL retires a year early.
I think I would have found another way to get rid of shattenkirk or kept him for this season and done something with him after next year.
