Good morning, boneheads!
This morning I came across this article by always loquacious Shayna Goldman from the Athletic, and while reading it I realized that sometimes we do not appreciate how lucky we are that this team, and its management, never has to worry about what’s called an internal budget. Most of the time, after salary cap was introduced, we only had to worry about not going over it. Salary floor and the Rangers has never been used in one sentence.
I’ll go a little further and say that we are lucky Mr. Dolan not only allows them to spend up to the max, but he also stays away from day to day operations. No, I’m not working for MSG. Dolan has no idea about hockey, lucky for us. And, no, I’m not worried about his pockets. This team makes money every year. Even if they aren’t competitive. Their operating income in non-playoff year (2017-18) was still league’s highest at $106.7M.
Some owners let them spend, but are too involved in hockey operations. We may have the perfect owner. Perhaps by default and not by design, but this combination of Dolan’s hockey cluelessness and willingness to spend makes our lives much easier.
Imagine for a second we had a parsimonious owner similar to Carolina, Ottawa, Arizona etc? Ugh…..

The diehard fans fishing into their own pockets to take their families to a Ranger game may feel differently about the value of the product.
NHL Team Rankings By Median Ticket Price
1 Chicago Blackhawks $283
2 New York Rangers $235
2 Montreal Canadiens $171
On a different note, Vinny Lettieri’s contract has been revealed. Interesting twist to it. He was qualified by Gorton, and his QO had to be a a two-way deal at $875K in NY and $73.5K in Hartford ( 5% rule for his base salary amount from previous season ). He must’ve rejected it and settled for league minimum in NY ( $700K), but $100K in Hartford. I guess he, and his agent, knew exactly where he was going to play this season.
James – Never said any of those players suck; but only one of those NYR forwards, if Kreider is moved, has scored over 21 goals in a season.
.
The biggest beneficiary of Bread Man’s talent will be his line mates. If Butch takes his game to the next level and focuses on sniping as much as passing, he could have 30+ goals playing on the opposite wing. Zika will lock in a $9M per deal if Bread Man helps him take last season’s output to the next level. Kakko prolly can’t wait to play with him.
.
None of those guys are Patrick Kane though. And Cam Atkinson who potted 41 on his other wing last season, had scored 35 prior to Bread Man’s arrival in Lumbus. One could argue trading Krieder (LW) for a sniper RW to play with Bread Man while the kids get ready.
Does NYR take a flyer on former Stars R1 Valeri Nichushkin?
Probably KHL bound
ILB-From previous post-spasibo. Was too lazy to look up the year and series on Asham lol
AHL
Same place Nieves belongs
MSG ticket prices are insane. That is the main reason the atmosphere stinks nowadays. There are not many families that can afford tickets downstairs there anymore. I have season tickets in Anaheim right above the Zamboni entrance. My buddy has tickets 15 rows up upstairs at the Garden and they are $20 more expensive per seat than mine. Thank goodness for HDTV.
I think that’s the same place most of the “other” forwards they’ve signed that were ufa’s from other teams will go also except mckegg, I have a feeling they want him on the 4th line.
Yeah, the only people that can afford tickets to the msg games are those people that have more money than they know what to do with.
I’m so poor, I have to wait for the heat maps to come out to see what happened in the games.
Unfortunately, they don’t give two turds about atmosphere. They care about the money. Just like broadway plays and operas. NY sporting events are for those that can afford the luxury.
Two turds aren’t cheap in NY either.
SN,
The kick in the pants is that you’re talking about this to me like I said I expect them to be one of the better teams in the league. Or as if I said Panarin was going to set career highs in points. I’ve said neither.
I’ve said more than once I am not holding on to expectations. Instead I’m eager to assess where they are at and see where they go from here.
In the meantime, if you wish to take the cynical point of view on every aspect of this roster and it’s players (almost to the point that you’re saying it was a mistake to invest in Panarin and Trouba who combined cost them nothing but money one pick and Pionk who you also didn’t care for) that’s your choice.
To put it simply- Given the choice between the Panarin assessment of Torts, Quenville, professional scouts, professional coaches and professional players……Or your own….With all due respect- I tend to lean towards those other guys who think he’s going to be just as good here as he’s been elsewhere.
😉
I know a few turds in New York.
😉
Forgot to mention, thanks JamesG for reminding me. I now listened to two Panarin’s interviews in full length, both in Russian. The second one was posted by CCCP. Interesting guy. Speaks simple Russian, but pretty smart. My sense is that he might be one of the few guys who will keep trying to get better and better despite already hitting a jackpot with his new contract. And he is serious about training regimens and preparations. This was a very friendly interview, and he didn’t have to say what he said. Also, he is actually married, it appears. Was referring to her dad as his father-in-law. After the first interview I thought she was still his girlfriend.
I’m mentioning “playable toughness” to maintain our number one google search ranking.
Wicky, what we really need are heatmaps of the talent in the stands at MSG. Then give them to the camera guys.
Beezle-I think we prefer low profile 🙂 We do not need more traffic. At least not until I retire 🙂
ilb
Retirement is overrated nothing to do but go out all the time 😎
James – you seem triggered!
I never said Bread Man would not be good but questioned how relatively effective he would be without playing with another established first line wing on the RW like he had in Chicago and Lumbus. Hopefully Kakko is that guy.
You made a snide remark about Chicago line mates forgetting Kane was with him. Now you are doubling down in Angry James mode.
It’s ok. Go outside and take in the sunshine. Deep breaths….
Here is a good tune for you to chill to…
Is there a heat map of some type that can help us visualize playable toughness?
Ilb it is clearly all that SEO you and RR2 have been doing! If you want a laugh, google: wicky hockey and look at the top result on page two!
Given that it’s late July, I’d say by far the most important issue on this blog is its collective inability to know where the apostrophe goes or doesn’t go in “its” and “it’s”. But it’s what it’s, I suppose.
Lol not even close SN. Not angry or triggered. Just think you focus on the negative and what could go wrong sometimes. Don’t take that the wrong way you’re one of my favorite fans to jaw back and forth with. I just see things differently.
Yes, he had Kane in Chicago. If he had spent his whole career in Chicago and just signed here I’d be more concerned. Sure he won’t have a sniper on his right unless Kakko or the like pleasantly surprises us this season. I get it. But this isn’t a second line guy who benefited from playing first line with two studs. I think he’ll hold his own.
I like how the randos show up and they all seem to be “triggered” by playable toughness lol
Odd coincidence?
Probably not
Randos? Surely you meant “Rambos”.
Norm, did I make that mistake?
Also, you didn’t seem to be impressed with a couple of big words I threw in there. I’m disappointed 🙂
For $235, ilb, I’ll let you know. Now to locate these big words of yours…
*NERD ALERT*
“loquacious” and “parsimonious”? You would have had me with “prolix” and “cheeseparing”. And, no, it’s not you who’s violated its rule.
And, I know, no politics, but can someone throw me a bone on today’s NYT crossword–“either of the two highest trump cards in euchre”? Let’s Go, Rangers!
Nope, meant randos
Norman,
Don’t want to speak for others but here’s a funny tidbit for you:
(Sadly) I was a straight A English student throughout high school and college. In fact I’m actually published in a college text book as an example of sports writing (probably an obsolete edition by now)
When I post here I don’t care for a minute about punctuation grammar or flexing extensive vocabulary muscle.
If I did it would take the fun out of ranting and raving and this place is for doing exactly that. Especially during the work week when some of us only have a phone to read with.
With that said I certainly give myself a bit of a complex when I re-read some of what I put post here..
But if a bunch of middle aged men (and BDL) want to be grammar snobs on a Rangers hockey blog that no one in the world except us Larry Brooks, Carp and George Grimm know about then. They. Can. have. At. It. Sir!💩
Wicky said rando which rhymes with sando and now I’m hungry.
I guess “triggered” is a thing now? (Sorry for using scare quotes)
To each its own, James 🤪
What in the world makes us think that krakko won’t be able to put up similar numbers to Elias Pettersson playing with the DJ and the Breadman?
Triggered is what happens to you when you get kicked in the balls by Roy Rogers’ horse.
here it is I thought everyone from trump to Putin
to kevin Durant
to Odell Beckham
to Tom brady’s Wife and jeter’s too.
to Stevie Y to Lou Lam
To Connor McDavid
to Mitch marner 😉
To Elliotte Friedman
To Pierre McGuire
To rich Paul
To Dave gettlemen
Secretly read the blog
To each it’s own.
The guy I think secretly doesn’t read the blog.
Carp (big-timer)
Adam Graves is playable toughness
Nuff said 🙂
I’m cold and scared, and there are wolves after me.
Next thread: which Rangers will bring Disportable Doggedness to the ice this season?
Adam Graves plays even if he wasn’t tough, dammit.
Suum Cuique
Don’t blame Carp. Now that The Athletic is established and fully known here, you can bet your sixty bucks that he’s been told to not visit his old relatives much if at all.
coos
Expected Abandonment!
At least LB sneaks in now and then!
I’m escared at what’s happening. Its making me nervous.
ilb has a head start on all of because of his professional familiarity with Latin.
O sibili, si ergo. Fortibuses in ero. O nobili! Demis trux. Sewatis enim: causandux!
(coos, same rate for you on the “its” lessons.)
Are you so naive as to not realize what I was doing? Shame.
Forty buses? Who needs that many buses? In ero? Did you mean Soho?
After nine days I let the horse run free
‘Cause the desert had turned to sea
We need a trade? We need a buy out?
Not naive so much as dense. No idea.
And you have a key part of the translation.
No eyed deer
BUYOUT THE TRAIDS!!
I really should mention in regards to today’s article about Dolan. I’m not giving him any credit until he gives us (the fans) some credit.
No 👁’d 🦌
Hi Wicky
wow, I’ve learned so many new words today! My English teacher would be proud!
I had a classmate who tried to translate the above in front of my one and only Latin class–fell for it hook, line and sinker, as I would have done if I’d had any playable toughness. “O sibili, si ergo. Fortibuses in ero. O nobili! Demis trux. Sewatis enim: causandux!”
Oh, see, Billy, see ‘er go. Forty buses in a row. Oh, no, Billy! Them is trucks. See what’s in ’em: Cows and ducks!
Anyone know what’s going on with the Bruins this offseason or if they have anything brewing? It doesn’t seem like they’ve brought in much via ufa or trades. And all their guys are a year older. I still expect them to be a top East team but it would be nice if they went into the season with similar look to last year.
Hi James!!
Does anyone have any experience with PRP for hair growth stimulation? It seems like the least invasive and least painful procedure. But the results vary.
Tiki, ask Ryan Getzlaf. It looks like he’s been using it for years.
The way it’s been going, we’ll be sharing Pasta Fazool recipes by the middle of August.
If you really want to catch someone trying to translate, you need to spell ‘sewatis’ as ‘sevatis’. No doubleyou in latin, but v is pronounced as w.
So when Caesar said ‘Veni, vidi, vici.’ It was pronounce weni, widi, wici which auditorily does not have the same affect.
Something along the lines of:
‘I shall release Bwian’
Dickens made Scrooge out to be loquaciously parsimonious.
https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/13009/pasta-fagioli/
Shattenkirk is much closer for hear saving advice. See encouraging results.
Tiki. – try ilb’s hot chili recipe.
Beckham O’Dell admits he has been operating under an assumed name.
Something tells me that JamesG’s Nonna would win this Pasta Fazool recipe contest hands down.
What’s a nonna?
Italian -American golf partner of mine after ordering a small bowl of Pasta Fagiola @$8.95: “When I was a kid this stuff was for poor people.”
Speaking of non hockey related banter, a buddy of mine leaves me a voicemail saying he’s going to a spear chucking gathering at someone’s house tomorrow.
I sent him a text message asking him wtf is that.
Apparently it’s a thing in Spartan races and they get together and practice throwing them?!
It would suck to live next door to one of those.
After he messaged me back all I could think about was that guy at the track and field event that measured the distance of the javelin throw and got stuck with one.
This is crazy…
Pageau
Haha! ILB, Grandma Mary’s pasta fazool was only rivaled by her pizza rustica😃
You can still get a gallon of it from Vesuvio’s on 3rd Ave for $10. Man, this stuff is good!
My grandfather lived on the suff!
Got a call today from season ticket office at MSG. I guess since I had season tickets for 30 years they thought I love to come home. Told the guy to lower the price by 50% and I might think about it. When I left in 2005; my seat three rows behind Rangers radio booth were $45. Cant imagine what they are now. Probably over $100. Sorry Mr Dolan The price’s are just too damn high. Thank God for my LG oled tv .
My grandmother lived on pasta fagioli as well!
Don’t blame ya, Jeff. I refuse to give JD my money.
Of his many talents, cooking I don’t think is one of them, coos! 🙂
Jeff Wilpon?
Wilpon bemoans Dolan’s prices.
spear chucking? where have I heard that one before? 👨⚖️
CCCP – Text
Who is Boomer and how did he give the Bruins an offseason grade of A and the Rangers only a B+?
Buchy is back
The Rangers have signed Buchnevich. The buyout clock starts now.
Yeeessssss, by one minute bdl 😉
Buyout window starts Monday, lasts for 48 hours.
Brooks reports $3.25×2
I’ll put up a new post in a bit. A little busy.
I took the liberty ILB. Hope you don’t mind. Add to it if you have more info.
