Good morning, boneheads!

Today is the 7th Birthday of our little one, so I won’t spend too much time on the blog.

This is the article from Larry Brooks, Click here to read it. One thing I want to mention and disagree with him:

“There are good reasons for a team under construction not to buy out players”.

Says who, Larry Brooks? You do what you need to do to keep the players you want. And if you can’t move players, you buyout dead wood. In fact, being under construction means that you will have a good amount of players under control for a few years. Plus, in this case, your most troublesome buyout numbers ( 2020-21 season) will be offset by removing Spooner, Beleskey, by Girardi’s buyout numbers going down, and by some expiring contracts. If Buchnevich, Kreider, DeAngelo aren’t here because they were reluctant to buyout one ( or more ) of the 3 albatross contracts,  the construction will be delayed, and not accelerated.

The Sharty buyout seems to make the least sense given the cap hit next year. Staal makes the most sense but will they have the cajones to pull the trigger on the old plow horse?

Last Game 7 vs. Caps, 2015. Lundqvist 35 of 36, .972. Team overcame him giving up that goal. Stepan!

    repost:

hank was the reason we won many playoff series without a doubt, but he was the biggest reason we lost to tampa in the 15 playoffs and he was average to below average against the devils in 13 playoffs and kings in the finals in 14. Never could put together that complete playoffs performance that you need from your goalie in order to win a cup

tom, buch ultimately may not put it altogether at the end of the day, but he is still a young player finding his way in the nhl and clearly loves being a Ranger and Quinn seemed to get through to him at the end of the year. And he obviously would want to play with his countrymen, so don’t think he’ll be a bad influence. Plus you are not getting a lot back for him in a trade.

Names and Strome have been in the league longer but have only proven that they are mediocre players, with Names in particular overpaid.

SN, i don’t think anyone wants Names at that cap hit and i can’t blame them

Games two and three are why there was a game 7 against TB. Caps had them all but done in 2015, till Kreider saved their bacon in games 5 and 6.

Think about what Kreider did in 2015 against the Caps. Tying goal in game 5 in the last minute, and he of course was the net front presence on the OT winner. Grabbed game 6 by the throat in the first period with two goals. The first early, and on a great individual effort. The second late, by of course being right in front of the net. And he was of course the net front presence on Stepan OT winner in game 7. He’s going to missed terribly when he’s gone.

In game 6, HL with 42 of 45 to hold on to what had been 4-1. Game 5, 28 of 29. And atta boy Kreider, but c’mon. The stats speak for themselves, and it requires tortured arguments to lay playoff losses on Lundqvist. He will always wonder what might have been if he’d had a Cup-roster team in front of him and can be proud of leading the merely good ones as far as he did.

He did have a cup – roster in front of him. Those 13/14 and 14/15 teams were cup winning rosters. Those teams do not get enough credit for how good they were. I, for one, certainly lay the blame of the cup finals at his feet. He let them down.

The thing of it is that the 14 team that made the SCF didn’t belong there. They got hot at the right time and had a spark from Marty St Louis that fueled their run. That said if they were gonna have a chance to win they’d need Hank to steak it. He couldn’t. doodie, in games 2 and 3 against Tampa hank let in 12 goals. Game 3 is the standout as the Rangers scored 5 goals and still lost in OT on the weakest of goals.

in two games vs the kings the rangers had 2-0 leads and lost both games. there were other culprits in those games for sure (staal, richards spring to mind), but he wasn’t at his best when they needed him the most. It happens, but no reason to say he was let down by his teammates in those games

    Buyouts

I actually went and crunched some numbers. If we buy out Shattenkirk that’s all we NEED to do for this year. Assuming all the RFA’s come in around where we expect, we’d be a tad under 500,000 below the cap.

His numbers next year go way up but it’s not actually a problem. Girardi’s numbers go down 2.5, Beleskey is off the books (825,000), NTL is off the books (4.0) and we have only Fast and Strome?, besides Kreider, to sign. Neither of the former figure to be getting a raise. So, to crunch, Shat’s numbers go up 4.6, we’ve saved 6.5 (allowing for elc to replace NTL) and assume cap goes up by 2. We’ve room enough to give Kreider 7 and still be comfortably (almost 2 million) below cap next year.

Problem is, of course, we’ve very little wiggle room this year but now it’s possible to retain salary (1 million) on NTL to make a trade more palatable and gain that extra space.

FWIW, the charts are very kind to Shattenkirk from last season, but only at ES. He was actually dreadful on the PP, which is supposed to be his calling card.

I do not completely agree with the charts in this instance. I agree with somethings the charts are reflecting, which is that he was probably the second best among last year’s defensemen at exiting the d zone and entering the o zone with possession, which was a low bar. And he was also pretty good, relatively speaking, in the offensive zone. He was definitely victimized, to an extent, by having his three most common partners be Claesson, Smith, and Staal. And while I do think he had some bad luck that led to his gaffes frequently ending up in the net, his game is nowhere near where it used to be.

I think a lot of people hate him because of the style of player he is and the big ticket he signed that he absolutely has not even been close to living up to, but he is definitely better than some of the other dreck that was on our defense last year and this year. Pionk and Smith were not NHL-caliber defensemen. They didn’t even offer Claesson a QO. Staal is also horrendous. Shattenkirk, of course, makes much more money than they do, but he is definitely better than they are. Again, I’m damning him with faint praise but I can only compare him to his teammates.

Smith like all the other S defense and Henrik, is a sunk cost. Making the best of a bad situation. Doesn’t look like any of them are tradeable (not counting Skjei) even with retained salary.

He also has some snarl in his game which is lacking in our lineup.

A couple of series stand out to me. The Devils in 12. Down 3 zip in game 5. Came back to tie it, only to have Hank give it right back. The finals against LA. 2 zip lead in game one. 3 seperate 2 goal leads in game two, and a third period lead in game 5 he has to lock at least one of those games down, if not two. The last one is the series that brought us to where we are today. The Ottawa series. AV was brutal, that’s the biggest issue, but Hank did no favors to the team in that series. He was flat out awful.
This is not to say he did not have great moments. He had way more great than bad.

  59. Rangers Report 2.0 Avatar
    Rangers Report 2.0

Also, for what it’s worth, something interesting statistically about DeAngelo. He was the player on the team last year with the highest percentage of controlled zone exits (as opposed to just dumping it out which is much more likely to lead to another zone entry by the other team) as well as the player with the highest percentage of offensive zone entries with possession (as opposed to playing dump and chase, which is less likely to produce scoring opportunities, especially with the makeup of this team). Not only that, but he was among the best players in the entire league at these particular and valuable skills.

Of course, the flip side of that coin, and why DeAngelo isn’t a good defenseman, is that he was among the worst in the league at defending the opposing team from doing the same thing to us. In other words, with him on the ice, the opposing team would have a very high chance of exiting their defensive zone and entering our offensive zone with possession. He is also particularly bad (though definitely not the worst) at defending those possessions in order to retrieve possession and make use of the valuable portion of his skillset.

Bottom line, when he’s on the ice, prepare to be entertained.

I was never a fan of the Shattenkirk signing ( was a fan of the Smith signing). The signs were there with the Blues, and then the Caps. I would still keep him this year. Staal, and Smith should be bought out before Shattenkirk. The left side is deeper organizationally than the right. Hajek/Lindgren/Rykov could step right in. The right side as Keane signed to a contract, but I don’t think it would be a smart idea for him to be the extra RD behind Trouba, Fox, and Tony D.

To the argument that a goalie giving up a mid-series game wears his team down, again, that only applies to teams who are being worn down, the lesser team in other words. So, sure, Lundqvist didn’t steal the final series against LA, though he sure stole other series, in particular the Penguins that year, whom they had no business beating, to get them as far as they went. Down 3-1, he saved of 102 of 105–steal. That folks expected him to do that for the next 5 is part of the perception problem.

Playing extra games you could have prevented playing, wears a team down. Winning in 5, instead of 7, makes a difference in the long run. Especially in the first two rounds.
He didn’t need to steal the LA series. He just needed to do his job. If your team gives you two goal leads, and leads in the third period, your job is to lock it down. His team was doing there jobs. They had leads.

There are zero Ranger vets whose best days aren’t behind them. Lundqvist, Staal, Shattenkirk, [Smith]. That’s not a lot of vets, not the biggest problem facing the Rs this season.

Quinn played Staal because he wanted to win the game in front of him, and he was in any hockey guy’s top 6. (The Rangers’ top 6, that is.)

playing with Staal dropped the Corsi for every other defenseman on the team.

Staal played the most minutes (668) with Neal Pionk. With Staal, Pionk’s 5v5 Corsi was 41.42%. Pionk played 495 minutes with other partners and his Corsi increased to 47.61%. Tony DeAngelo played 389 minutes paired with Staal and had a Corsi rating of 43.67%. Without Staal he played 599 minutes and his Corsi was 47.31%. In fewer minutes, there was the same result for Kevin Shattenkirk, Brady Skjei and Brendan Smith.

Yet, Coach David Quinn continued to put Staal in the position of defending against the opponents top lines. Staal led the team in defensive zone starts and was on the ice for the most defensive zone faceoffs of any Ranger.

My thoughts, through all the conversation of the past and why the Rangers didn’t win the cup there’s plenty of blame to go around for why they came up short. Having said that I would have to agree with James, the biggest issue with why they didn’t win the cup was they were offensively challenged when it counted the most. The Minx has spoken!

  99. Rangers Report 2.0 Avatar
    Rangers Report 2.0

let’s not let coaching usage define quality. Lots of crappy defensemen get played a ton and that doesn’t make them good players.

As for our own coach, as an example, Quinn used Staal-Pionk a ton on the PK despite the fact that any eye test or statistical analysis clearly shows them to be one of the worst penalty killing duos in the entire league, if not the worst.

  100. Norm Merton Avatar
    Norm Merton

I love it–Quinn peering down at his tablet and watching those Corsi proxies. It’s great that the advanced-stats folks are doing what they’re doing, but until those stats are predicated on other than shots and blocked shots, it’s garbage-in, garbage-out. All of it will get better once they generate enough revenue to catch up to soccer and get more game input. Could be a long wait.

  101. James G Avatar
    James G

Staal for all of his on ice performance issues still wasn’t the worst defensive player the last two seasons.
Guy has been a good teammate and is respected by most the league as well as the organization and that I’m sure includes JD.
That in a nutshell is why we don’t hear anyone saying he’s a guy they’d like to buyout despite what we may think about it.
I think the fact that this roster is/was inundated with “puck moving dmen” at times is what has a lot of us tired of Shatty. He hasn’t had a single “big moment” and will leave behind no Ranger legacy other than “being from New Ro”….who cares? I mean I’m from new ro too. Haven’t seen a check for four million yet.

LA kicked our butts from mid point of each game through ot. One way traffic. That was also their 2nd cup in 3 years and they beat a great Chicago team to get to finals. Sometimes the other team is simply better.

not saying that coaching usage defines quality just pointing out what it says about the organization’s opinion of Staal vs. Shattenkirk . Quinn didn’t have many defensive options last year. Trouba should help along with Staal’s advanced stats (yippee!)based on third pair minutes and match ups.

  110. Norm Merton Avatar

I’m talking about Corsi being predicated on shots ‘n’ blocks, RR2. And a bit immoderate of you (get it?) to stick my head in the sand given just about all I do here is look stuff up. 🙂

Vancouver is paying Tyler Myers 30 million over 5 years. Erik Gudbranson and Jack Johnson continue to be well-compensated defensemen. The Leafs are paying Codi Ceci 4.5MM.

In other words: organizations can be wrong.

  112. Rangers Report 2.0 Avatar
    Rangers Report 2.0

OK, but even in that regard, people doing advanced stats work don’t just look at corsi. It’s one stat. It’s just like how you can’t just look at a guy’s TOI to determine whether he’s good or not.

  113. Norm Merton Avatar
    Norm Merton

RR2, I’m a confirmed nerd and I like the idea of advanced stats, they’re getting better, and Sznajder in particular is doing good work, but it’s still in its infancy. Corsi is a ship that’s sailed, IMO. Served its purpose, groundbreaking and all that, but too little input. I mentioned soccer, which is insane in its number of inputs, and there’s also baseball, where you have fielders standing in highly probably good positions. Hockey’s not there yet, unless there’s stuff I don;t know about yet–highly probable!

  114. cregg7 Avatar
    cregg7

I think advanced stats have a role just somewhere in the middle between the stat geeks and the naysayers

I have no interest in filling my brain with them though but I’m glad some people are willing to look at them (like how Vally explains some plays).

I don’t want to get stuck in a quagmire or watching a game with those goggles on (let alone playing it)

How do they decide what stats are relevant and where the gold standard lays?

Like…if you don’t play the game the way Crosby plays it and have a different score on measurables than you suck. If you post possession number like the most recent norris trophy winner than that means your good?
Can you win and MVP or a Norris with some advanced stats looking like doo doo but others showing your the best in the league at something?

  115. Rangers Report 2.0 Avatar
    Rangers Report 2.0

Vally’s company, Clear Sight Analytics, has a ton of proprietary data and metrics that are not publicly available. I’ve heard some people who have been able to see some of their data and they were all thoroughly impressed.

  116. Rangers Report 2.0 Avatar
    Rangers Report 2.0

Cregg, why don’t you read about their methodologies, then?

Norm, baseball is the ultimate stat sport because of the incredibly high number of controlled interactions.

Hockey is trending towards where soccer is. What is holding it back are a bunch of stuffy old “hockey men” who refuse to see the value in it. Soccer, especially at the high-stakes European level, was much more responsive to change and to spending money to figure out what works best. Ditto for basketball.

  117. aneirin Avatar

@anerin – see my post from yesterday, you still need to do more than just buyout Kirk unless you play down a man on the roster.’

Which the Rangers have been doing a good deal of for the last 3 years anyway. And, if you haven’t noticed, Quinn is not a coach who is comfortable moving guys in and out of the lineup. It’s a tool he uses for getting someone’s notice rather than tactically. I think he would be happier with a 22 man roster than a 23 man roster.

  118. tommyG Avatar
    tommyG

As we get closer to trouba’s and Buchnevich’s arbitration hearings it appears that the only solution is for the rangers to go with the buyout options. I think teams who have cap room don’t want to help teams who need to shed salary and why the rangers haven’t been able to make trades to free cap space.

There is now a good portion of hockey fans who no longer watch the actual game. They will go directly to the advanced STATS and then tell you who was good, and who was bad. For example, no person who actually watched Kevin Shattenkirk play last year will tell you he was good. But during this off season people are telling us that Shattenkirk was actually good last year based off is ” underlying numbers”. I can’t respect that opinion. My eyes do not lie. I understand for some it’s a way to confirm what they saw, and enhance their enjoyment of the game. I do that with the regular box score. just as looking at the regular box score, and seeing that Joe Smith was plus three in 12 minutes of ice, after not having watched the game, and then coming to the conclusion, Joe Smith was good and had a major effect on the game, would be silly. I think using the underlying numbers without having watched the game would be silly.

In high school hockey, which I know a little bit about, even with a stud on the other team it’s about the little things, the mistakes you don’t make, all that, which make the biggest difference if the two teams are competitive. I have to imagine coaches believe the little things are even more important at the NHL level, and that’s where the eye test is always going to matter the most, as much as advanced stats help. When those stats tell as precise a story as the eye–a guy making a lazy line change, not taking the hit to make a play, losing his gap, rink-turning away from the play, etc., then you can learn about last night’s game from them.

BDL, anyone looking at just stats is doing it equally wrong as someone who ignores them completely. They are there to get you to question what your eyes are telling you and/or help you understand why your eyes are correct. Sometimes I find that looking at the stats helps me notice things my eyes missed. Sometimes I find that the stats say things that my eyes don’t agree with, no matter how hard I look to find what the stats say.

    More information is always good.
